Dhuum was the god of death before Grenth. Dhuum was, according to Reaper of the Chaos Planes, a cruel and unjust god and was thus overthrown by Grenth who took the position as the new god of death. However, Grenth did not have the power to slay Dhuum, so he was forced into a state of dormancy by Grenth and imprisoned behind enchanted doors and layers of divine magic within the Hall of Judgment. Every time a creature in the Underworld dies, the release of life energy adds to Dhuum's dark power, possibly eventually enabling his release, as explored in Something Wicked This Way Comes. It is implied in the quest Don't Fear the Reapers that Dhuum's return is inevitable, foreshadowing a possible encounter with the fallen god.

Dhuum is also known by a plethora of other names. Some of them are listed here:

  • Death Inevitable
  • The Ender of All
  • The Mouth at the Edge of Darkness
  • Omega Death
  • The Voice in the Void
  • The Final Judge
  • Emperor of Oblivion
  • Master of Nothingness

Spoiler alert: The following text contains spoilers relating to the story of the Nightfall PvE campaign.

A dialogue by Keeper Zeliss in Nightfall reveals that Dhuum has survived in some form and that he and Menzies are aiding Abaddon. Known followers of Dhuum include the Terrorweb Dryders, Tortureweb Dryders, Riders of Dhuum, Skeletons of Dhuum and the Emissaries of Dhuum.
