Gold sink

A gold sink is the term applied to a game mechanic that removes currency from the in game economy and thus counteracts the effect of inflation.

Therefore, the main gold sinks to be found in Guild Wars are the NPCs who require payment for their services. (eg. crafters, rune traders, merchants, etc.) Whilst a majority of these buy and sell they take a cut of the money for handling the merchandise and remove that money from the game.

Without the presence of gold sinks in the game, inflation would spiral out of control rendering it close to impossible for any new or casual player to trade with other players based on the money they obtain by playing.

Large gold sinks

• Keys and lockpicks.
• Traders.
• Prestige armor, especially Obsidian armor.
• Titles:
  • The max Sweet Tooth title can be bought for 2000 in Red Bean Cakes from a Canthan merchant.
  • The max Drunkard title can be bought for 2000 in Dwarven Ale from a Tyrian merchant or for double that in Rice Wine from a Canthan merchant.
  • Shing Jea Boardwalk acts as a large gold sink when the area is active, (due to the mechanics of the probabilities) as it allows players to gamble to attain the Lucky and Unlucky titles.
• Guild Hall upgrades cost a total of 510 for the full set of NPCs.
• The Hall of Monuments is the largest gold sink in the game. Completely filling it requires that you max out all of the titles, have 5 sets of prestige armor, and 11 destroyer and/or tormented weapons.
