Item stacking by type (Discussion)

Inventory space is a valuable thing for players in Guild Wars. Rather than simply increase available storage space for Guild Wars 2, introducing a different stacking rule might benefit players more. For example, if your character has 3 Red Iris Flowers, 1 Storm Artifact, and two Flatbows, in Guild Wars, this would amount to 4 inventory slots. If we were to stack by item type, this would be reduced to 3 inventory slots (i.e. the two flatbows would stack). Obviously, items of the same type might have different stats. The tooltip can be improved to allow navigation of the stats of the different items in the stack. Even better if it allows check marks, which, when checked, would lock the item and prevent it from being sold when the item stack is sold. The check mark can also be used to split the stack.

Why this is a good idea
  • Increases storage space.
  • Gives players a mechanism to better organise their items by stacking similar items into logical groups as needed.
Why it may not work out
  • Trying to locate the stats of one particular item in a stack or trying to select it out of a stack will be more complex; and if designed poorly, is a hindrance.
  • To prevent too many things from being stackable, more item types would have to be created, likely resulting in more categorisation work when it comes to introducing new items into the game.
  • For the complexity of a well-designed interface to support this feature, it might be better to just increase storage space.
