Berserker!(Discussion)

Note: The idea is sort of a product of brainstorm, so critique is most likely to be found through out this article. Also, Berseker could be switched to the term "Brute"; diffrent meaning, same qualities.

Background: The berseker is a strong "god-like" warrior that mostly fights on "trances of fury". The term is originated from the Norse culture and the warriors originated from them too. Bersekers were included in large scale battles. Mainly, they might have been todays (excuse my term) "Suicide-Bomber": meant to run in to battle, and cause major damage with a high percentage of death. Exciting, it may sound, but if you were against one, chances of YOUR success, may have been little.

The Outline: Right off the bat, here may be some advantages/disadvantages of a berseker that you may need to know to shape your opinion:

Advantages:

  •   Very high damage- Similar or higher than the damage of a GW1 Dervish or Assassin.
  •   Wide Range of damage- maybe 5 people max?
  •   Variety of duel/two-hand weapons: Great Axe/Sword/Hammer/Mace (two-handed), Duel Axe/Scimitar/Hammer (duel weilded), Flails, etc.
  •   Instead of armor, characters may choose to protect them selves with an "Endurance" quality of a Berseker.
  •   Little to no energy needed, where a new aspect could be introduced called "Fury". (later to be explained)
  •   No use of traditional bows but maybe lances or crossbows and an easier use of hammer and great axes

Disadvantages:

  •   Lack of Armor/protection, made up in endurance quality of a berserker
  •   Possible lack of energy
  •   Weak against most projectiles (arrows, magic casting)
  •   Could be the victim to too much aggrovation gained from enemies due to power- for better or for worse.

Fury: Altough similar to warriors, fury, would be the bersekers adrenaline. The gaining of fury would be almost opposite of adrenaline. The law of fury: when an enemy attacks and inflicts damage in anyway but spells or hexes, 1 unit of fury would be gained. (A blue flame instead of a red flame on skills- similar to adrenaline) For each unit of Fury you have, you have 5-35 Endurance (armor) (depending on the attributes you own)After 1 unit of fury has been used, you lose endurance as well.

Sum Up:

  •   Berserkers are the aggro magnets and may be difficult to master.
  •   Berserkers are similar to warriors, but can contrast in good and bad ways.
  •   Berserkers would introduce new weapons, tactics, and skills.
Why this is a good idea
  •   A new feel to melee fighting!
  •   More selection to Professions.
  •   Ideal secondary or first profession mix, assuming their will be one. (Example: warrior/Berserker [W/B])
  •   The Asuran would be more buff (not all have to be scrawny)and heavily armored
  •   Even though it mostly resembles warrior, any berserker would be trained in more heavier weapons that normal warriors can't use well, the berserkers would probably use twin heavy weapons like axes and great swords but 2 hands for hammers, they might not be strong against casters, but they make up for it in armor resistance
  •   Elementalist Berserkers (EB) could use physical rocks for earth protection, Ice for water, Molten Lava for fire and whatever the mind can think of...Ranger Berserkers would use cross bows and can fire multiple arrows quicker and could use tree armor for protection. Necromancer could use bigger bone minions with high bone armor. Assassin Beserkers could buffed with auras for making them stronger, same with mesmers. Dervishes will have major scythes and paragons with lances or larger spears and shields, and with warriors can have HUGE armor. monks could be like special priests with more gruff to them and beards (don't forget the beards)
Why it may not work out
  •   Too much of a similarity to a warrior.
  •   Not in a good "theme" addition for Guild Wars 2.(Example: Guns, Trains, Modern Equipment)
  •   Not all races would be able to be a berserker. (Example: Asuran Berserker?)
  •   Originally, Berserkers were intended for large scale battles, where as GW2 may not have Large amounts of battles in PvE; It may be too early to tell.
  •   Feminine armor may lack in coverage due to the idea: Berserkers where little armor and mostly depend on mental/physical endurance.
  •   How could we possibly sum up weapon mastery with its wide selection? (assuming there would be attribute points)
