Chest
From Guild Wars Wiki
A chest is an interactive object which, when used, drops items for members of the team to pick up. This can be random loot or items required for a quest. Chests can be classified mainly into two types; locked and unlocked. Locked chests require a key or lockpick to unlock and drop uncommon or rare loot for the individual which opened the chest. Unlocked chests are mostly used for retrieving quest items or elite mission rewards, and are found through the game with various appearances and purposes.

[edit] Locked chests
Locked chests are found throughout Tyria and the Mists. There are two naming conventions for locked chests. Chests found in normal mode will have a name associated with the region where they are found. Locked chests found in hard mode instances are all called Locked Chest regardless of region. A locked chest can be opened by having a key of the same name or a lockpick in your inventory and clicking on the chest. Each chest in an instance may only be opened once by an individual, the chest is shown with an open lid to the player after it has been opened. For other members of the party the chest will still appear closed and they may also open the chest if they have an opening device.
Opening the chest gives the opener an item which is guaranteed to be at least uncommon but can also be rare. Whether a chest returns uncommon or rare is determined at each opening of the chest. The quality of the item dropped depends on area where the chest spawns which is reflected in the value of the key used to open the chest. For instance, a key worth 80
will never return a rare or maximum damage item, but a key worth 600
or over to purchase from the merchant has a good chance of returning a maximum damage rare weapon. Opening a chest with keys worth 600
+ will contribute to the Treasure Hunter title track.
Locked chests randomly spawn through a zone into a set of predefined locations. A chest may spawn in the same spot every few times you go through a zone.

[edit] Quest item chests
Put in to facilitate retrieving items required to complete a quest. When the chest is opened it (typically) drops sufficient quest items for the team to each have the necessary quest item to complete the quest.

[edit] Quest and mission reward chests
Quest reward chests appear after completing a quest. Newer versions of these chests work like the locked chests, where each individual may only open the chest once, but no key is required to open. Older versions drop a single, generally low-quality item for a random party member.

Throughout Nightfall there are several places where unlocked chest or chest-like objects are found. They reward the player with a large pile of gold and a good weapon or a gem. See Treasure for more information on the location and content of these chests.
[edit] Storage chest
In areas where it is too inhospitable for the Xunlai Agents to access the player can get access to their storage using Xunlai Chests available in outposts. Unlike other chests, these are actually NPCs instead of interactive objects.
[edit] Hidden Treasure
In Dungeons, one can find Hidden Treasure with Light of Deldrimor. They contain either gold, a Dungeon Map or rare crafting materials for each party members. Like Storage chests, they are NPCs.
