Faction is an overloaded term in Guild Wars:
Initially, "faction" referred to a reward system in PvP. A player in PvP would be rewarded faction points for completion of certain objectives. These faction points, commonly known as just "faction" could be used to purchase unlocks.
With the addition of Guild Wars Factions, colloquially known as "Factions," two opposing nations or factions (the Kurzicks and the Luxons) were introduced. Each faction rewards points for completion of certain faction-specific objectives. A surplus of one faction's points over the other indicates an alignment with the former faction. To disambiguate the original meaning from the new meaning, the initial faction points are now known as Balthazar faction.
[edit] Notes
- The plural Factions usually refers to the Guild Wars Factions campaign or at least both the Luxon and Kurzick factions together. It is almost never used to describe the points received as an award. The reverse is usually true. A player would say "50 faction," not "50 factions."
