An inscription is a salvageable upgrade component, and applies to any equippable item (weapon, focus item or shield) with an inscription slot.
Inscriptions were introduced with the Nightfall campaign in October 2006. In the case of an inscribable item, the inscription takes the place of the inherent mod on weapons, one of the two inherent mods on staves and one of the two mods on shields and focus items.
Some weapons have been known to carry their inherent inscription as well as an inscription slot, as a result of exploits or game errors. Such items are extremely rare, as they do not drop, though they do still circulate among players.

[edit] Acquisition
Inscriptions can be salvaged from any weapons that carry them with an expert or superior salvage kit. Inscriptions are always successfully salvaged, but as always there is a chance the item and any upgrades remaining on it will be destroyed. The only exception to this is when using a Perfect Salvage Kit where you will always retain both the inscription and the item to which it was attached. (For a breakdown of the odds see Salvage)
Weapons carrying inscription slots can be obtained in the following ways:
- Nightfall and Eye of the North
- Any drop of item rarity blue, purple or gold has a chance of carrying an inscription slot and inscription.
- Factions
- Any equippable non-unique item which drops from the Urgoz's elite chest or Kanaxai's elite chest is guaranteed to carry an inscription slot and inscription.
- Core
- Any weapon which drops from the Chest of Woe or Underworld Chest is guaranteed to carry an inscription slot and inscription.
- PvP
- Any equippable non-unique item which drops from the Hall of Heroes elite chest has a chance of carrying an inscription slot and inscription. (Confirmation required that this isn't in fact guaranteed)
Note: Some weaponsmiths in Nightfall craft weapons with an empty inscription slot on them, but never weapons carrying an inscription. Collector weapons in Eye of the North may have empty inscription slots. Reward weapons (from Scribes) from the Bonus Mission Pack have empty inscription slots.
