Favor of the Gods

When adventurers accomplish heroic deeds, the gods grant blessings to their world, known as favor of the gods. The favor of the gods affects all players in the game world, regardless of where they live in the real world.

The special command /favor displays the amount of time remaining in the current blessing or the number of feats required before favor is bestowed, depending on whether favor is or is not present in the world.

[edit] Earning achievements

Favor is granted based on achievements. Each time a character achieves the maximum rank in a qualifying title, the world will be one step closer to gaining the gods' favor.

When a character earns one of these achievements, that character's name and accomplishment will broadcast in seven locations: the Temple of the Ages, Lion's Arch, the Great Temple of Balthazar, Kaineng Center, Zin Ku Corridor, Kamadan, and the Chantry of Secrets.

After twenty announcements have been made, all Guild Wars players in all territories will be granted the gods' favor for one hour. If another character earns an achievement during that time, the favor of the gods will be extended for an additional three minutes.

The twenty-two qualifying titles are (max title track rank in parentheses):

Character-based titles:

Connoisseur of Confectionaries (2)
Incorrigible Ale-Hound (2)
Legendary Cartographer (1)
Legendary Defender of Ascalon (1)

[edit] Favor in explorable areas

When the world gains the gods' favor, statues to the gods in explorable areas light up. Characters who kneel in front of these statues will summon an Avatar of the relevant god. Speaking to the avatar allows the player to exchange gold for a temporary bonus, including morale boosts, increased Health, or regeneration. The bonus remains as long as you remain in the area; it does not expire when you die.

Most areas do not have statues to any of the gods, while a few have more than one. Almost all of the statues are located near a resurrection shrine or a portal to another area.

[edit] Special realms

While the world has the favor of the gods, characters can travel to two special realms: The Underworld and The Fissure of Woe. To get to one of these special locations, your character will need to kneel before a statue of Grenth or Balthazar. These statues can be found in one of the following locations: the Temple of Ages in Tyria (for Prophecies character), Zin Ku Corridor in Cantha (for Factions character), or Chantry of Secrets in Elona (for Nightfall character). Another statue of Grenth which will allow you access to The Underworld can be found in the Temple of Grenth at the Southern end of Lornar's Pass in the Shiverpeaks

If your character kneels before one of these Grenth statues, that character can summon a spirit called the Voice of Grenth. By spending one platinum, your character can enter the Underworld, along with the rest of your party.

If your character kneels before Balthazar instead, you'll summon an avatar of the Champion of Balthazar. After spending one platinum, your party can travel to the Fissure of Woe.

[edit] Notes

  • Prior to August 9, 2007, favor was granted per ANet region and depended on events in the Hall of Heroes; when a team defended the Hall five consecutive times, all players in the regions gained favor.
  • On March 23rd 2007 for a special weekend both favor areas were opened to players at all times, without the requirement of favor of the gods.
  • Players wishing to enter UW or FOW are able to do so without holding Favor or paying an entry fee by using Passage Scrolls.
  • Favor is maxed at 35000 minutes (24 days).
  • Prior to November 13, 2008, Sunspear and Lightbringer titles counted towards favor; Treasure Hunter & Wisdom titles were character based before this update.
  • For a while the Treasure Hunter, and Wisdom titles did not count towards earning the Favor of the Gods. They stopped counting for favor after the large 13th November 2008 update when these titles were changed to be account-based titles. They were later re-instated as counting towards favor in the June 2009 update.
