I like this idea; support. Could even expand upon it beyond farming to nearly any economic endeavor. Players will be permitted to craft items in GW2. What if players had the option of becoming merchants, blacksmiths, cooks, etc., setting up shops and market stalls in the various towns to buy and sell items. Then - much like as you described with the player who becomes a farmer - the merchant-type players' economic livelihood would be threatened when the town they've set up shop in comes under attack. They would then pay the soldier/adventurer-type players to help eliminate the threat to the town so they can go back to selling their wares.

Furthering this economic inter-dependency between the soldier-type players and the merchant-type players, the merchants could set up mini-quests for soldier-type players to undertake on their behalf. For example, let's say a tanner needs 10 fire drake hides to craft some kind of leather armor. They could of course just buy it outright from other players who open a trade window with them.

But if the goal is to de-emphasize the tedious mechanics and micro-management of the game versus actually playing the game, a new function could be added. The merchant player posts a request for a needed item at their market stall (the 10 fire drake hides mentioned previously) and the amount they are willing to pay. Then they're done; no having to waste time bartering with multiple players and buying three hides here, four hides there, another two hides over there, etc.

Then along comes a soldier-type player who's in need of some quick cash. They see the posted materials requisition and accept the "quest". They go out, kill some fire drakes, manage to collect the 10 hides, then return to the market stall where they trade the hides in exchange for the amount of gold the merchant was willing to pay. This is all automated without a need to open multiple trade windows and chat windows. The merchant-type player doesn't even have to be logged into the game for the transaction to be completed. Then, when they next log on, a message would pop up alerting them to the fact that the 10 hides they had advertised as needing have been delivered and the gold automatically paid out.

The merchant-type gets the hides they need without having to waste time in a traditional spam-a-lot trade channel, permitting them to play the game doing what they enjoy doing (crafting stuff). The soldier-type earns some quick cash doing what they enjoy doing (killing stuff) without wasting time standing around in a town trying to sell hides. Win-win. I have to say it, I don't like the idea. I don't see anywhere near enough players taking part in "MMO farming" to warrant the work to put it into the game. Anet would have to make a completely new character design for these farmers, or GW3P's merchants. It also doesn't fit into Arenanet's paradigm for GW2, that the players are heroes. It also would have issues with Lore. The other races aren't as heavily agricultural as the humans are. The Norn are hunters, about the only thing they might grow is barley and hops. The Asura prolly have golems do the farming for them, and they are likely to trade with Kryta, and buy their food that way. The farmers amongst the Charr are most likely the old, the injured, and the disgraced of their race. Dunno about Sylvari. That could go either way. All else I can say is taht Guild Wars 2 can't be EVERYTHING in one game. Its just not possible. And I'm getting more and more impatient waiting for it to come out.--Will Greyhawk 21:52, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
I second Will Greyhawk's point. You would be asking not just for a whole lot more from ANet with this, but even asking for a totally different game. --Messenger 10:13, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
