[edit] Mission information

[edit] Objectives

Secure a safe place for your people to settle.

[edit] Walkthrough

Head south until you reach the village at (2). You will have to defeat all the undead in the field before the gate will open to let you in. Once inside, talk to Justiciar Toriimo to open the southern exit from the village. After leaving the village, head over the bridge at the beach, after which you are prompted to speak to Justiciar Hablion, but it may be best not to talk to him, as the mission can be completed without him. The mission will fail if he dies, and sometimes he runs off and gets himself killed. Whether you choose to speak to Hablion or not, clear the swamp (and mind its poison effect). Once you have eliminated all undead in the swamp, the final cutscene will trigger. Warning: There are two bosses in this area. If you want to use a Signet of Capture on them, make sure you kill them first.

[edit] Bonus

Talk to the pig named Oink at point 1. It will follow you and this will enable you to take it back to its owner, Cheswick in the village at point 2. Follow the water north from the beach until point 3 where you will find the Orrian Text in a chest. Be aware that opening the chest will trigger a spawn of powerful Smoke Phantoms, as will carrying the text back to the village at point 2. Do not attempt to run through the spawned phantoms as their DPS will quickly cut down NPCs/allies. Stand and fight and the phantoms will drop quickly. Return the text to the Orrian Historian McClain (point 2) to complete the bonus.

You can recover the Orrian text without speaking to either McClain or Cheswick, allowing you to use Oink to distract the Smoke Phantoms near the chest. You will have to return to the village to complete the bonus, returning the text and the pig to their respective NPCs.

Note: Oink is unique in that the pig will attack your enemies and is invincible at the same time. Its damage output is low, but it could potentially fight your way to the village single-handedly.

Anomaly Anomaly.
After you return Oink to Cheswick, Orrian Historian McClain will tell you that there is a shipwreck to the southwest when it is actually to the northeast of where he is standing.

[edit] Skill recommendations

Holy damage will make things a lot easier, especially in Hard Mode, so try to take Judge's Insight or Heart of Holy Flame for converting attack damage to holy damage and some other Smiting Prayers skills. An Avatar of Balthazar dervish (or two) will make this mission actually pretty easy in Hard Mode, as the dervish can do the tanking and deal significant holy damage as well.

Minion masters are less effective in this mission because most of the enemies are not fleshy.

[edit] Dialogues

Between a Lionguard Recruit and a Veteran:

Recruit: Do you think this will be like the standoff at the Temple of Mercy?
Veteran: I understand. But keeping this location safe is also important.
Recruit: This is bunk. Stuck here while everyone else is out fighting.
Veteran: Be patient. Your time will come.
Recruit: It's just that I feel so powerless here."
White Mantle Seeker: The scriptures speak of the walking dead. Soon the true seers will be revealed.

Between Josephine and a Merchant:

Josephine: "You've got to be kidding me."
Merchant: "I never kid."
Josephine: "Four gold for a head of lettuce?"
Merchant: "It's supply and demand."
Josephine: "Well, then I demand my money back."
Merchant: "Look, Joe, my whole crop was trampled by those ghouls."
Josephine: "I don't care. I won't pay that much."
Merchant: "Suit yourself."
Merchant: "All right, look, how 'bout I give it to you for three gold."
Josephine: "Three gold? For that much, I could clothe my entire family!"
Merchant: "Then, what would you pay?"
Josephine: "Hmm... For a gold piece each, I'll take three."
Merchant: "I'll give you three heads of lettuce for four gold."
Josephine: "I'll give you three heads of lettuce for four gold."
Bug Bug.
One may presume the last line is bugged.

[edit] Notes

  • Players looking for the cartographer title can find a hidden path behind the house where Oink is found.
  • Complete exploration of this mission contributes approximately 1.4% to the Tyrian Cartographer title.
  • Justice Hablion tends to run towards the undead mobs after you speak to him; in Hard mode, this can lead to mission failure since he is vulnerable left on his own. Your two choices are to (1) ignore him (simply do not speak to him and clear out the swamp on your own) or (2) protect him with spells and keep some of the team nearby at all times.
  • You can power level at the start of the mission. Have Oink follow you and continue to the path behind him. At the bottom of the hill you will find a Hellhound. Attacking it will cause more undead to appear. Run back and the undead will crowd around Oink, allowing you to easily kill them.
  • In normal mode, characters from Factions and Nightfall will not receive a direct reward; completing the mission and bonus will still count towards the Protector title.
