Error creating thumbnail

It looks like this is back again. It was previously reported and fixed a few times:

It has today been reported here: Help:Ask a wiki question#Arborstone (explorable area) issue.

Perhaps it would be possible to identify the cause of this, and prevent it happening again in the future? Biscuits User Biscuits sig.png 21:48, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

There seems something changed with the thumbnail creation, or at least something that required it to regenerate them; in general it helps simply purging the page, and I doubt the problem will be there that long. poke | talk 21:52, 4 March 2009 (UTC)
Are you guys still seeing this pop up? I passed it along to the team, but I'd like to confirm whether it's still occurring or not. Thanks! --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 05:08, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
Heya guys! We believe that the fix that we put in place for caching should take care of this (unless it's a completely unrelated issue). Please keep an eye out and let me know if this pops up again. If it does, we'll have to troubleshoot some more. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 23:50, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Images

After we slammed the server on Thursday, it appears some images have gone by the wayside and are showing up as links. I was hoping it would resolve itself, but it's been a while now and it still appears to be a problem. I'm not sure what all is missing, but I've noticed File:User Gordon Ecker sig.png and File:User Wynthyst bullet2.png are not displaying as images but rather as links in FF3, and just blanks in IE. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 10:22, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

When I tried to upload a new version of my bullet image I got the error "Could not create directory "public/d/da"." --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 10:42, 26 April 2009 (UTC)
Aye there seems to be a few, some images have completely vanished like File:Chocolate Bunny.png. --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 21:27, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
Seems as if some image directories got lost.. Any chance to recover these? poke | talk 21:48, 27 April 2009 (UTC)
Heya guys! I just wanted to let you know that this was passed along and the team is looking into it. I'll let you know what I hear back :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 00:42, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
Heya again Wyn! Your bullets should be fixed, and we're looking into more issues. I'm going to reply to the bottom topic about this as I get more news. Thanks for the reports. We're working on it (again...boo) ;) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 01:24, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Image caching issues again

I uploaded new versions of the Vault box images to the wiki 2-days ago to reflect the 4th Anniversary changes but the old images seem to be cached. I tried to force a cache purge by clicking on the time clock at the top of the page but that did not do anything. When you click on the old image, the new image will display, but the old image remains on the Vault box page. I'll try uploading the images again in a couple of days if it doesn't resolve itself. Luke1138 16:43, 25 April 2009 (UTC)

Images reloaded and refreshed this time. Luke1138 00:30, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Special:LinkSearch bad input redirect

Searching anything with a /* in Special:LinkSearch like http://*.wikipedia.org redirects to http://us.ncsoft.com//badInput.html . Interestingly, URLs formed with /wiki/ instead of /index.php like Special:LinkSearch/http://*.wikipedia.org work. -Smurf 03:48, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

When entering the protocol with a wildcard (for example http://*.example.com) the server stops and returns http://us.ncsoft.com/badInput.html instead (which doesn't exist since the site relaunch btw.).
Just entering *.example.com works perfectly but MediaWiki automatically adds the http:// internally so all links (page navigation) will fail then. poke | talk 11:10, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

Heya guys! The above two things were causing issues because * wildcards are blocked at network level for security reasons (primarily possible SQL injections). The team has found a work-around for this and has put in a fix for it. We're looking to have it live by the end of the week. Poke and Smurf - if this is still giving you guys headaches early next week, please repost here so I can flag it again and check the status on the fix. Thanks for pointing this stuff out :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:38, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
Huh!? When I posted my section I didn't see that Smurf already posted the same one o.O very weird :P
Thanks Emily, however it was weird that just http://* was blocked but without http:// it worked without any problems. poke | talk 20:43, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
Heya guys! I checked this out, and it seems like you can now put * and / in searches. The first example still returns the error, but I'm not sure if it's something I need to bug security ops about again. I can't imagine anyone should be searching for a weird http wildcard on the site anyways. I'm going to leave this open for a day or so and then archive it unless someone can give me a good argument for pushing another request through to the team :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 21:10, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
Works fine, thanks Emily :) poke | talk 22:19, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

404

I seem to be getting a lot of 404 Link not found errors. I have to reload and then sometimes it works perfectly, sometimes it shows up with horrible layout and sometimes it doesn't work at all. Also I can't see loads of images, for example some of the pictures above (External Link) does not show up.

I can't get it to happen again. May have been like a shortterm problem, maybe because a huge amount of traffic suddenly came in? That doesn't sound right but you know what I mean. Mini Me talk 19:27, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Is anyone else seeing this for my user page? Have a look inside the red box. Something is up with my sig image, and only on my page. — Jon User Jon Lupen Sig Image.png Lupen 00:23, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Yes, I see it too, and I actually saw the same with the Guild Wars images on the main page, though that seems to be resolved now. Hi again all! The team believes they nailed the issue this time. When the update was about to hit, we actually added an additional group of front end servers to our wiki cluster to help with site performance for the big burst of traffic. I don't know all of the technical details behind the problems, but from what I understand there were issues related to configuration changes resetting after the addition of the new hardware. I've been told that these problems have been identified and should be resolved. If there are lingering issues, we can stomp em out as you report them.
Again, we apologize for the funkiness. We'll add this to the growing list of weird Mediawiki things to check for whenever new hardware is added or software is upgraded :) And as I said earlier, please report any bugs to me if you find them. I am going to set aside some time for adding some renders to pages today, so I'll keep my eyes peeled too. Thanks guys! <3 --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 21:02, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

re. Protection

Protecting User:Peter Verhelst/Journal at 17:44, 13 March 2009 (UTC) made the wiki slow/inaccessible for about 5-10 minutes. Wiki was running fine before that protection. Hope that helps :) --User Brains12 circle sig.png Brains12 \ talk 18:00, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

Similarly for protecting Guild Wars at 19:03, 17 March 2009 (UTC) - Tanetris 19:09, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
Protecting the non-existent page Lol from creation at 15:26, 20 March 2009 (UTC), however, worked perfectly fine. The problem might just be limited to protecting existent pages, and that can be tested easily enough. --User Brains12 circle sig.png Brains12 \ talk 15:31, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Showing up as another IP

There seems to be a similar problem as we had with user accounts before, editing from one IP but being detected as another IP by the software. Several IP editors have now reported not being able to edit the wiki since the software recognises them as a blocked IP, while they are all on different IPs.

moved from User talk:Wynthyst

I noticed you've banned the IP that I'm on. I should be on a 128.255.x.x, whereas the ban was intended for 172.30.35.26. I'm not sure how the wiki banning system works, but I can guarantee you that I've never vandalized anything on here. The block id is #14601. I'm far from a frequent contributor, I just wanted to point this out. Thanks! 128.255.195.88 07:33, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

See above, and ditto. 68.51.95.206 08:07, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
Wyn has recently blocked two IPs, 98.25.48.171 and 172.30.35.26 according to the block log and IP block list. There is no ban in the log for an IP starting with 128.255 at all, although you could have been automatically blocked if your IP has been used to log in to a blocked account. I can't think of any other reason. - anja talk 08:24, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

And I was trying to edit a section on Gaile Gray's discussion page. Here is an interesting finding. I saw you mentioned Wyn's logs, and went to the user contributions page via the link on the left. I suddenly saw a different IP on the top of the page than my own! In fact, it displayed a 172.30.xx number, even though I am obviously on a different net. I went to Gaile's page and was able to get to the edit after refreshing my local page cache.
I'm not too familiar with how mediawiki handles pages, but is there possibly a server page cache that may be causing some false positives on occasion? How does one purge that cache on demand? 76.30.79.54 08:46, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
Update: I was able to get to edit mode and preview on Gaile's page, but not to save (yet). The wiki seems to randomly switch what it thinks the current IP is. I even couldn't add this update note for a while with the same odd wiki insanity. 76.30.79.54 09:16, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

Based on the message that came up for 68.51.95.206 above I think I was getting the same thing last night, I was checking my character templates in IE since I hadn't checked up on if they looked differently and forgot that although I was logged in in FF I wouldn't be in IE. Anyway I was going to report it either here, Wyn's page or on IRC to see if it was happening to anyone else but seeing as it was 1am I kinda wanted to get actually to bed early, well earlier than usual :/ --Kakarot Talk 11:38, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
I don't mind, I'm just curious how they can be posting on my page, or here for that matter if they are being recognized as "blocked" I do agree that they are not the IP addresses I blocked yeseterday, and it is indeed a wierd bug. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 13:07, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
I thought that being blocked allowed you to still edit talk pages, so you can discuss possible removal of the block. Least thats what it looks like to me. An idea, could this bug be a possible virus that several people have on their computers, or one thats gotten into the Wiki's servers? Ive heard of some viruses that do stuff kind of like this, but Im far from sure.--Neithan DiniemUser Talk:Neithan Diniem 13:34, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
No virus here (never has been, never will be <knock on wood>). The IP switch does not happen consistently. I've found that when it does, I can do a refresh of a page preview several times, and the IP gets straightened out... at least for a little while. I had that same problem just now again, for this very response. 76.30.79.54 15:49, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Lol. I went to Recent Changes from my previous response, and the blocked IP (172.30.35.26) was listed at the top of the page again! I refreshed a few times and it changed back to me. Here's a wild thought. Assuming it has something to do with a caching mechanism in mediawiki, is it possible the blocked IP is doing some sort of mild DoS attack, causing the wiki to cache and then serve that IP back to others? Unpredictable intelligence has been the bane of many a software package in the past. Now that I re-read it, it seems a bit far-fetched... 76.30.79.54 15:58, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi guys! Let me make sure I read the topic right:
  • Wyn banned an IP for being a vandal
  • Several other anonymous posters (who have different IP addresses) got the block notice as well, despite not being the blocked IP
Anyways, please correct me if I misread anything. I have no idea what could be causing this, so I'll pass it along and see what the team has to say. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 21:16, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Has someone stolen the RSS Feed for Guild Wars Wiki - Recent Changes [en]? It seemed to disappear about a week ago and my grasshopper patience has hopped off!
I am sure I am not alone in finding this one heck of a valuable news feed! Bearz User Bearz pawprint.png 11:32, 17 May 2009 (UTC

Ah! The problem was the rss feed. http://wiki.guildwars.com/index.php?title=Special:RecentChanges&feed=rss is not delivering but http://wiki.guildwars.com/index.php?title=Special%3ARecentChanges&feed=rss is .... weird but true! Bearz User Bearz pawprint.png 11:59, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
I thought they have changed exactly that before to keep the rss readers off the wiki servers and have a separate server for that (the feeds.guildwars.com one). Weird that it now works on this server again - bug? poke | talk 17:29, 17 May 2009 (UTC
You may be thinking of the newsfeed for "Recent GuildWars changes"? My problem was with the "Wiki-related Recent Changes" newsfeed. Bearz User Bearz pawprint.png 17:53, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
No, see this discussion. poke | talk 18:26, 17 May 2009 (UTC)
Thank you for the link Poke. Fortunately, I don't pull on the RSS Feed every 9 seconds. In fact, I only update every 30 minutes out of choice so the RSS Feed works fine for me and I am not hammering the Server which is the topic of the other discussion. However, back to my original comment, the RSS Feed is now working again for me so I guess, if no one is worried about the RSS Feed URL having been modified then my original comment mentioning that problem has no further value being discussed. (Reset indent) I received word a few days back that all RSS issues should be resolved. If there are any more issues, please let me know. If not, I'll archive this in a few days. Thanks! --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 01:36, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Can't Create New Pages

For some reason I can't create new pages or view redlinks... I get a 404 error when I try. I was trying to create a page in my namespace and I kept getting 404 errors each time. Any guesses? --Shadowphoenix User Shadowphoenix Necromancer.png 16:49, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

Seems to have stopped... but it may need to be looked into... --Shadowphoenix User Shadowphoenix Necromancer.png 17:45, 18 May 2009 (UTC)

Temporary Passwords Take a While to Activate

Why do you even need to read more than the headline? Anyway, after I got my temporary password when my account was hacked, it took at least 15 minutes before I could log in with it. Not much of a big deal, but still annoying. --Gah User Gah My Name Cant Fi Echomending.jpg Eat my uber regen. 20:06, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

What temporary password? poke | talk 21:07, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
If you forget your password (for example) you can request a temporary password to be emailed to you, allowing you to log in. --User Brains12 circle sig.png Brains12 \ talk 21:30, 10 June 2009 (UTC)
Strange! I'll check with the team and see if there's some kind of timer on that. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 01:37, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
Heya Gah! Sorry for the late reply on this. I received word that the team repeatedly tried to reproduce this issue, but had no luck. There are no settings that they could find that governs the length of time before a temp password is activated, and all of our attempts instantly work. They think that it could be a user side caching issue on your machine, but beyond that they can't say. I'm going to go ahead and archive this, but if the complaint pops up again, I can pass it along again. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:30, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Link Misdirecting

Trying to cap a skill from Uussh Visshta and when I click on the map link I get shown location of Custodian Jenus , sorry if this is in the wrong section :) The preceding unsigned comment was added by Darthbaz (talk • contribs) at 23:17, 1 August 2009 (UTC).

That's simply because the bosses share the locations (or are rather randomized in one of those), and Jenus' map was probably uploaded first before people noticed that it is the same for all. So don't worry, it is still correct for Uussh :) poke | talk 23:21, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
