Block report

There are a few problems with the report page that comes up when someone is blocked but tries to edit.

  1. The start and end times are identical.
  2. The "Intended blockee:" field is empty
  3. The block ID is not listed, but only a "#" is there.

I blocked myself for three days and tried to edit, and this is what came up (I left out the wikification):

You do not have permission to do that, for the following reason:
Your user name or IP address has been blocked.

The block was made by Brains12. The reason given is Testing .

    * Start of block: 14:51, 11 July 2008
    * Expiry of block: 14:51, 11 July 2008
    * Intended blockee:

You can contact Brains12 or another administrator to discuss the block. You cannot use the 'email this user' feature unless a valid email address is specified in your account preferences and you have not been blocked from using it.
Your current IP address is 90.196.43.244, and the block ID is #. Please include either or both of these in any queries.

Also referring to MediaWiki:Blockedtext, the variables $5 and $7 seem to be broken (maybe even more). poke | talk 13:30, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks guys...I'll send an email off about this! --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 21:17, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
Heya guys....I passed this along and we've determined that this is something broken in the core MediaWiki code itself. I'll pass it along to my team here and see if someone would be able to take a look at it. I don't have a timeframe for this, though, since the team is really busy and this issue seems to be relatively minor. I'll also do some investigation on my own and see if I can track down a fix for it. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:19, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Email This User

I don't know why, but every time I use 'email this user'. The copy that gets sent to me is flagged by hotmail as failing sender I.D, and marked as phishing -- though its from my own email address (which means its a wiki bug). Is any other mail service flagging the emails? Dominator Matrix 15:17, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

It also fails sender I.D when the person replys to you. Dominator Matrix 05:39, 15 July 2008 (UTC)
Heya guys...I'll see what I can find out about this for you. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 21:18, 16 July 2008 (UTC)
Hiya Dominator! We've traced everything on our end, and are seeing no issues on the wiki side. It's likely that it's being caught by Hotmail as phishing because it's one email address (our wiki servers) sending mail on behalf of another email address (yours). Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do about this on our end, since the issue lies with Hotmail's filtering rules. I don't use Hotmail, but you may want to check and see if there's some way to make an exception from emails coming from the wiki? There may be documentation out there about this very thing, since Wikipedia also uses MediaWiki and probably runs into the same issues. Wish I could help more. If I read anything that may help, I'll let you know. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:25, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
That would be why. There not blocked, or shuffled into the junk folder. There marked red (phishing), and you have to click 3 different allows to see the email (you can still see the text though...). Still works but might confuse someone else with less knowledge. Tried contacting Windows Live Hotmail staff, and they pretty much said that its not there problem. Something really freaky happened when I went to view this image. When I clicked on it, I wound up being logged in as the user that uploaded it. It even gave me his talk page an contribs when I clicked on them, but reverted me back to my account when I did so. I have a sceenshot of it....and I have no idea what the helicopter just happened. o.O
The photo is located here. --User Wandering Traveler Oie User Wandering Traveler Sig2.png WanderingTraveler 01:34, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Perfectly fine for me, so it could be a cookie issue? (uhh...not logging out for a long time, can cause the server to re-use a cookie). Anyways haven't we been here before? Dominator Matrix 01:36, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Not that I remember...and I just logged in, so I don't think its a cookie issue. I'll recheck my cache. --User Wandering Traveler Oie User Wandering Traveler Sig2.png WanderingTraveler 01:37, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
XD with the wikis load, I don't see how we haven't run into the server re-useing hex codes in cookies. Dominator Matrix 01:41, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Oh and purge the page (click the lovely clock-->Top left or right). If it changes then its the servers caches fault, if not, then its not that. Dominator Matrix 01:43, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Nope, still changing the username. I'll beat my computer until it changes I guess.... --User Wandering Traveler Oie User Wandering Traveler Sig2.png WanderingTraveler 02:31, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
I've had this problem before (it's in the archives somewhere), but it looked fine to me. Did you try purging the cache (clock does that now)? --TalkPeople of Antioch 02:39, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Yup (hover over the clock and you can see =purge). Hmm, then why don't the rest of us get the error? Werid..Dominator Matrix 03:42, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
I had something like this happen to me on GW2W. It was extra weird, since the user who uploaded it was german so all the tabs and everything switched to german and I became very confused :P ¬ Wizårdbõÿ777(talk) 05:05, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Image Cache again...

have a look at this Image:User Shadowphoenix Bug1.jpg. That symbol there in the about me section has been changed but it remains the same on my userpage. It has been like this for almost a month now... any guesses? --ShadowphoenixPlease, talk to me; I'm so lonely ;-; 06:56, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

It could be similar to whats happened with a few NPC/monster images when they were changed to a render maybe? For a few of them it would show up fine on some pages but not on other pages, on others it would show up fine on pages but not update on the actual image page. The way it was sorted out for some of them was to delete the old revision but before trying that try reuploading the old image again and then if it hasn't updated by tomorrow I'll delete the old revision for you. Although this is what has normally been done I wouldn't mind hearing from other people including Emily in case there is a better way to fix it than deleting revisions. --Kakarot Talk 13:25, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Maybe upload the new pic under a different name to force the server to reload the pic? Or ask a sysop to delete the old version. Purging of the image page seemed to fix the error. Dominator Matrix 05:04, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Thumbnail creation error

I've got this strange error when looking at the page for Shiro Tagachi. All the images used on the page show up as these grey boxes saying:"Error creating thumbnail: Unable to create destination directory." ([Image:User_Yukiko_wikithumberror.jpg]) These grey boxes don't link to the image, or sized the same. What's more, other pages don't have this problem, looking at past revisions doesn't have this problem, looking at a edit preview doesn't have this, nor do I have a problem seeing the images themselves. Yukiko User Yukiko Sig.png 18:53, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Reload the page, the caches a tad slow. Dominator Matrix 18:56, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
Fixed by clicking the clock (purging the page). :). Dominator Matrix 18:57, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
Ah, ok. I had tried doing refreshing already, but after clearing the catche & reloading it worked. Thanks. Yukiko User Yukiko Sig.png 19:00, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Tilde in username

We've got one of those problematic urls with tildes in, User:~nymph~ (this works). As it's a user and not just a page, it'll probably need a rename of the account if that's possible, and it may be a good idea to disallow creation of account names with tildes in so it doesn't reoccur. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 01:28, 15 August 2008 (UTC)

A fix of the mod_rewrite should do it too I think. poke | talk 06:37, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
There are at least seven other users with a tilde in their name, going by the user list. Calor Talk 16:03, 15 August 2008 (UTC)
You looked through the entire list to find them? Or did you just see the ones who may have a tilde at the start of their name? — Eloc
Hi guys...we're currently talking about this exact topic. Right now, we're leaning towards allowing tildes in names (which would fix the current issues) to avoid having to rename people's accounts for them. I'll keep you updated with the final decision when I learn more details. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 21:51, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Recent Changes

I currently notice the recent changes not following up to the changes, plus those changes taking a while to appear. Plus its also close to the problem hour. Dominator Matrix 04:57, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Recently, User talk:NuclearVII/Essays/Questions and no answers didn't update for me for a while after I edited it. It showed up fine in the history and edit tabs. -- Gordon Ecker 06:47, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
I'm also re-experiencing a problem that we had a while ago, with new entries being attributed to a different time. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 11:48, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
I can confirm that, currently the history of Wyn's talk page is messing up, showing comments to a section before the section was created. poke | talk 12:32, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
It looks as if the server time was not correct as the signature timestamps have the wrong time as well. poke | talk 12:33, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
This may be related to this but yesterday I noticed that the recent changes date/time seemed to be messed up. The line "Below are the last 100 changes in the last 7 days, as of" read 18:52, August 15, 2008 as did the line "Show new changes starting from" but the last edit was from 22:51 (August 15th), if need be I can upload a screenie. --Kakarot Talk 13:33, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
It seems to be continuing even now. My RC hasnt updated in quite some time. --User Wandering Traveler Oie User Wandering Traveler Sig2.png Wandering Traveler 16:50, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
On top of that pages (like my userpage) the cache also doesn't get updated until you purge the page. So times are wrong, its not recording, and its not updating. Dominator Matrix 23:29, 16 August 2008 (UTC)
It dosen't seem to be recording reverted information correctly in the history. Fall 21:10, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

(Reset indent) It gets better and better all the time, I left these comments at 12:56 (UTC) and as the link shows the first one went back four hours and the second four hours before that. --Kakarot Talk 13:00, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

Ok, it's getting worse. Now not only the history thing is cazy, but also the pages themselves are not showing some contributions. Erasculio 09:49, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

I'm looking at the history of ArenaNet:Guild Wars suggestions and I see:
  • 22:24, 17 August 2008 Lolsocks (Talk | contribs) (85 bytes) (Replacing page with '#1 suggestion for GW Revert GvG, you've killed the only good thing left in the game.')
  • 22:18, 17 August 2008 M0st want3d (Talk | contribs) (480,427 bytes) (→Xunlai Mini Pet Storage)
  • 18:33, 17 August 2008 Anja Astor (Talk | contribs) m (480,427 bytes) (Reverted edits by Lolsocks (Talk); changed back to last version by M0st want3d)

History issues since the crash

Since the wiki crashed yesterday, edit histories are not recording correctly, at least, several of my edits do not appear in RC, or in the various page histories. When I purge my cache, the edits appear on the page, but not in the history.--Wyn's Talk page Wyn 13:12, 16 August 2008 (UTC)

Thumbnail errors

While I've been working on the cinematics pages, I'm getting a relatively high number of thumbnail errors. The image will show up the first time, but if I edit the page again, it errors writing the thumbnail. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 02:31, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

Categorising

Category:Elite skills contains User:Spawnlegacy/Swashbuckler/skill/Embrace Elements, a page that has never been categorised as such.

Presumably this has something to do with the page containing an infobox template that would have categorised it as such if it had been in mainspace. Backsword 02:45, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

And this is a bug? Calor Talk 02:47, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
It does? — Eloc 20:00, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
The infobox lists it as an Elite Stance under type. That would put it in Category:Elite skills.--Wyn's Talk page Wyn 20:14, 25 August 2008 (UTC)
The page was accidentally in the main namespace before, that is why it was categorized. poke | talk 20:20, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

Image Cache

Again many files are not updating, this has gone on for many days and affects any new versions of images of this week. A purging and refresh of the image page doesn't help as it just goes back to the old one. Dominator Matrix 23:12, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

I've actually noticed that images being reuploaded update automatically (or just require a quick hard refresh) -- could you give an example of one that hasn't? --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 00:37, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
It would be this one. Though it was uploaded between the backup and DB work. It seems to have finally updated. Dominator Matrix 03:43, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

So I received word about this issue, and was told that the reason this is happening is because "sp_" is being blocked because it can be a stored procedure. We've put in a request to have the full guild name excepted, so that change should be made in the near future. In the meantime, I'd continue to use the %20 solution to hit the page. Unfortunately, there's not much that can be done until that exception is made :( Thanks for pointing this out! --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:30, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Protecting

Protecting seems to grind the wiki to a halt for a few minutes. For example,

# (Protection log); 01:14 . . Brains12 (Talk | contribs | block) (protected "Guild:Dark Betrayers": bot target [create=autoconfirmed])
# (Deletion log); 01:08 . . Brains12 (Talk | contribs | block) (deleted "Guild:Dark Betrayers": G1: Purely vandalism)

I saved the protection request a few seconds after I deleted the page, but the log shows it was 6 minutes after the deletion, during which the wiki wouldn't load. This slowdown seems to occur whenever a page is protected (though the length of time usually differs), so it's not a one-time thing. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 00:27, 28 September 2008 (UTC)

(Edit conflict) Could be not a bug but a feature to make it protected (as you can't allow anyone to edit while getting it protected). Though it shouldn't take that long. Dominator Matrix 00:36, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
I just tested it on another wiki, and it saved perfectly fine; in fact, it's a slower wiki compared to this one, yet the protection request took the same amount of time as any other save would. They're on MediaWiki 1.13.1, but I doubt that would have an effect on the speed of protections. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 00:45, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
"Could be not a bug but a feature to make it protected" - nice feature that breaks the wiki for multiple minutes... Actually the protection is just a simple value inside of the database that need to be changed, so there is actually no reason why it should take so long. poke | talk 11:58, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
