Hex spell
From Guild Wars Wiki
Skill type. A hex spell is a spell that bestows a negative effect on a foe for a period of time. Hexes come in a very wide variety of such penalties. Some provide an effect while the hexed foe takes damage, some provide penalties to a player's speed, health and armor, while other hexes prevent the target's ability to block attacks. There are also many hexes that provide additional penalties when those hexes end.
Hexes can be easily noticed by the dark cloudy ring that orbits the legs of the player affected by the Hex along with the symbol of the profession from whom it was casted by. It is also visible by a purple arrow pointing downwards on the hexed target's health bar.
Casting the same hex on a foe will cause the newer hex to replace the old one. That foe will not suffer the penalties of a hex that ended when it is replaced this way. When a foe dies, that foe loses all of their hexes, but any penalties that end with the player's death will trigger, such as Malign Intervention.
Certain mesmer and necromancer skills provide additional bonuses against hexed foes, such as Recurring Insecurity or Soul Barbs.

[edit] Counters
The most common way to counter hexes is by using skills that remove them altogether. The dervish, mesmer, monk and paragon are the only professions capable of removing hexes. Such examples of these skills are Avatar of Dwayna, Shatter Hex, Remove Hex and Hexbreaker Aria.
The ritualist and ranger have a few skills that can also reduce the effects of hexes, such as Resilient Weapon and Melandru's Resilience.
The warrior's Lieutenant's armor reduces the length of hexes by 20%.
[edit] Notes
- The warrior, ranger, paragon and dervish are the professions who do not have hex spells in their skill listings.
- Weapons can be upgraded to deal up to an additional 15% more damage towards hexed foes, or deal up to 20% more damage while the wielder is hexed.
- It is sometimes safer to have another person in your party that can remove the hexes for you, as hexes triggered by skill use, such as Diversion and Backfire, will be triggered before the hex removal effect.
