This article is about Area of Effect in general. For area damage over time skills and monsters' "AoE scatter" behaviour, see area damage over time.

Area of Effect refers to skills or other gameplay mechanics that affect creatures within a specific locus. Area of effect mechanics in Guild Wars have the following radii: adjacent, nearby, in the area, and within earshot.

Contents

[edit] Adjacent to target

This is the standard area of effect for melee attacks with Scythes.

[edit] Adjacent

Refers to a range larger than melee or touch range, but smaller than nearby.

[edit] Nearby

This denotes larger than adjacent but smaller than in the area and is roughly 1/6 the size of your aggro bubble. Its radius is equal to 1.5x adjacent (melee) range.

[edit] In the area

(Referred to in some instances as "In this location"). This denotes larger than nearby but smaller than earshot. This is the largest area of effect that any offensive spell currently has (e.g., Deep Freeze). Its radius is equal to twice adjacent (melee) range.

Ward and well spells have this area of effect.

[edit] Earshot

Earshot (or "within earshot") is one of the largest areas of effect in the game, affecting an area approximately equal to the aggro bubble. For this reason, it is one of the easiest ranges to calculate on the fly, since the aggro bubble is drawn onto the compass.

Most shouts have a range of "within earshot". Additionally, most ritualist skills that require spirits specify they must be "within earshot".

[edit] Spirit area

Unless otherwise specified, all passive spirits (e.g., Life) have a range of 2.7 aggro bubble radii. That is roughly the distance from the compass center to a point halfway between the aggro bubble edge and the compass edge.

[edit] Party

The party range is the largest in the game and is used for skills, such as Heal Party, that affect the whole party but declines to mention the area it affects. It is believed to be just larger than the range of the compass and when party members grey-out due to distance, they are out of "party range".
