[edit] Mission information

[edit] Objectives

Return Prince Rurik south of the Wall to safety.

[edit] Walkthrough

In order to avoid being totally overpowered by the Charr outside the academy, do not pull the lever. Instead, take the back exit (north-east then head roughly south from there). Make your way through various groups of enemies until you reach part of the Wall. From here, turn northward until you find yourself behind the Charr army that is still camped outside the academy. Work your way through them, small group by small group. There will be a random Charr boss in the middle of the army. After you kill the Charr, Prince Rurik will pull the lever inside himself and greet you. Follow him back to The Wall, and watch the cutscene.

After the cutscene, follow Rurik (he will run ahead thoughtlessly at this point). Though he is a capable tank, you should hurry so that he is not overwhelmed by the elementals. Following the next cutscene, you will meet another large group of Charr. Most of them can be avoided but when you do fight some, you'll find that Stormcaller's effect has greatly weakened all of the Charr. Follow Rurik into the city, fighting various Charr along the way until you come to Bonfaaz Burntfur. Kill him to finish the mission. For those trying to achieve the Tyrian Cartographer title : Rurik will not engage Bonfaaz Burntfur, thus allowing you to fully explore every little bit of the map you might have skipped in order to keep up with Rurik earlier.

[edit] Bonus

You get this bonus fairly early in the mission by exploring east before reaching the wall (1 on the map). There is a "green dot" there Watchman Pramas, who will give you the bonus and drop the "Tome of the Fallen". Get a caster to pick this up and carry it (casters make the best carriers of items because they don't rely on melee attacks to do damage).

Continue south and head towards the wall. Go down the stairs, do not cross the gate, but continue all the way west instead. Keep left and pass west up the hill. Here it can get very nasty, especially if you have a bad group where folks rush ahead. If someone rushes ahead, you will get mobbed and the group will probably wipe. First, explore the area surrounding the Spirits of the Fallen carefully, as there are a lot of groups of hidden Devourers there. Once cleared, you have somewhere safe to take on the Spirits of the Fallen. Lure out the warriors as few at a time as possible, with luck you will only get 3-4 at a time. After 10 or so are dead, it is safe to get closer to the pedestal. Replace the tome on the pedestal, and talk to the ghost Old Ascalon Spirit (point 2 on the map). That will make the ghosts disappear and get you the bonus.

If you can, try heading up the left-hand entrance and sidle up against the wall there. Often it results in having to fight groups of only 2-3 at most. (The right hand side is much easier though with only meeting a few small groups before being able to place the tome.)

Notes:

  • Placing the tome will not complete the bonus objective. To get credit, you need to talk to the green Old Ascalon Spirit who will appear after you place the tome.
  • Holy damage is very effective against the Spirits of the Fallen.
  • A few pairs of the spirits will not move to attack you, even when in aggro range; they only attack if you are within melee range. Use this to your advantage and take them out with ranged attacks and spells. They will move if attacked by AoE spells but will then move back to their original location.
  • The Devourer boss off in the Northeast corner by the cemetery can provide a recharge for Resurrection Signets. Be careful and try to lure him because several Carrion Devourers will appear when you attack.

[edit] Recommended Skills

[edit] Hard Mode

  • It's advised to take a single healer. The Charr have healers as well, and if you're not doing more damage than they can heal, you can't beat them. You could take skills that lower healing like Lingering Curse.
  • At best do not open the gate and take the long path, especially if doing Bonus, as otherwise Rurik will start running his path and he'll trigger the cinematic, which will teleport your party to him even if you don't follow him.
  • Exploring side trails will reveal allied ranger NPCs with Dual Shot (You will encounter both groups when doing Bonus: an Ascalon Ranger and Warmaster Casana are on the long path at the beginning, and three Lost Soldiers near Gargoyles, next to the graveyard.) They will follow and help you. Using weapon spells on them or skills like Barbs on the foes can also help.
  • After reaching the gate at the beginning, 5 Charr Axe Fiends and a Charr Flame Wielder will charge towards Rurik and the Flaming Scepter Mages. Take them out fast and watch out for Rurik. He's not going to follow you and will from now on run his path towards Rin. Try to pull aggro before he does after the second cut scene, as he will otherwise pull two groups with about 9 Charr.
  • If repeating the mission because of trouble keeping Rurik alive after the second cutscene, try going the opposite way from him after the first cutscene.

[edit] Dialogue

[edit] In mission

Prince Rurik: "The Charr archers have us pinned down. You'll need to sneak out the path to the east and ambush those Rangers. I'll stay here to help the mages hold the defenses. you must hurry. We can't hold out here for long."

Prince Rurik: (After freeing the Academy) "We push on, to Rin! Bring the mages. Their homecoming is overdue."

Watchman Pramas: (Bonus objective) "I took the Tome of the Fallen from the graveyard. The captain ordered me. But I didn't know it was cursed! Now the spirits of those who lost their lives on the Wall are roaming free! Please. Take it back to the graveyard for me."

Old Ascalon Spirit: (Bonus completion) "These spirits are at peace because of you. They gave their lives protecting the Wall. The story of our destruction was foretold long ago. Our names might as well have been written in the Flameseeker Prophecies. Heed the words of the prophet. The sons of Ascalon must not die in vain."

[edit] Notes

  • Interactive objects
  • After this mission, players will be in Yak's Bend.
  • Complete exploration of this mission contributes approximately 1.0% to the Tyrian Cartographer title.
  • In the beginning, you can speak to the Flaming Scepter Mages to get them to follow you.
  • You can pull the lever yourself and fight the Charr that swarm in. This is only recommended for characters with high levels. Elementalists have a significantly easier time of this than most other professions. You can go back and do the bonus just before finishing the mission.
