PvP (Player vs. Player) Characters are one of two types of characters that can be created in Guild Wars. Unlike role playing characters, PvP characters are forbidden from entering PvE Missions, explorable areas, or outposts that are not reachable through the Battle Islands, however, PvP characters are free to compete in any PvP missions. PvP Characters are created with only a primary profession, appearance (face, hair style, height, color scheme), and name. Once created, this type of character will automatically be sent to the Great Temple of Balthazar. Once there, PvP Characters can equip themselves, select skills, and change secondary professions at will.

PvP Characters differ from RP Characters in several ways, the most noticeable being how they are equipped with armor/weapons and skills. Unlike RP Characters, PvP characters do not need to learn skills through skill trainers or missions. PvP characters can equip any skill that is unlocked on the account they belong to, whether those skills were unlocked through PvE play on another character or through PvP Faction based rewards. Similarly, equipment for PvP characters is not bought or found through monster drops, but created through a special PvP Equipment menu. In this menu, players can create customized weapons, armor, and shields/focuses. These items can be augmented by applying upgrades that a player may have unlocked such as grips, runes, insignia, etc.
