A quest is a sequence of objectives that a player must fulfill for a quest giver to obtain specific rewards. All quests follow a similar structure though they each have their own unique story and interactions. Quests have a wide variety of interactions that range from simply talking to various NPCs, transporting items, killing specific NPCs, or escorting allies.

All quests can be divided into primary or secondary quests. Primary quests, along with cooperative missions, are designed to advance the main storyline of a particular campaign. In most cases, completing primary quests is the only way to progress the game since they unlock certain outposts and missions upon completion. Secondary quests, also known as side quests, are optional to complete and do not advance the main storyline of a campaign. They often have their own storyline, where a quest leads through to other related quests available only after completing the first quest.

[edit] Characteristics

All quests have the following characteristics:

Type
Either primary or secondary. Festival quests can be considered a subset of secondary quests.
Objectives
Short tasks that need to be completed. The quest log displays each objective in a bulleted list. Sometimes another quest may be an objective.
Reward
Most quests offer gold and experience as rewards and additional rewards specific to a campaign. These include skills, weapons, attribute points, skill points, reward tokens, faction, or reputation points. A few quests unlock heroes or travel to other campaigns.

Some quests may have these additional characteristics:

Solo
Quests that must be completed by a single player without the help of henchmen, heroes, or other players.
Repeatable
While most quests can only be completed once, some are repeatable (Repeatable quest) and even offer the same reward each time they are completed.
Difficulty
Some quests have an additional difficulty of masters or elite. These may have a large number of enemies.
Hero requirement
A few quests require the party have certain heroes present.
Mini-mission
These quests take place in their own separate instance rather than modify an explorable area instance and have no resurrection shrines, so a party wipe will result in failing the quest. Some Eye of the North quests can be considered to be mini-missions even though the quest log doesn't indicate it.
Festival
These quests are only available when their respective event is in progress.

[edit] Obtaining quests

Quests can be acquired from quest givers, NPCs that have a green exclamation point above their head. For large non-human quest givers, the exclamation point may clip inside their body making them only partially visible. Eye of the North uses a green door entrance for quest givers that offer quests associated with dungeons. Quest acceptance dialogue uses a large green tick to indicate the option that will active the quest and place it in your quest log.

Once a quest accepted, the quest log will have an entry for that quest. Quests are organized either by their type or location. Primary quests are listed under the Primary heading, secondary quests under the region they are from, repeatable quests under the explorable area they are from, and festival quests under the Festival Event heading. A few primary quests from Eye of the North are listed under the Primary <Race/Organization> heading depending on which story arc they are from.

While in a town or outpost, a quest can be abandoned by clicking the abandon button in the quest log. It can be reacquired by talking to the NPC that gave the quest. Any progress made in a quest before abandonment will have to be redone. Some quests can be failed and will require a zone to a nearby town or outpost to try again.

For repeatable quests, after you accept the reward for a previous completion, you have to leave the map zone and return before you can acquire the quest again.

[edit] Completing quests

The quest log and the compass are helpful tools in completing quests. The quest log will provide detailed information including objectives that need to be completed. The compass, with the use of a green arrow and star icon, will point out where the next objective is. These icons can also be viewed from the mission map and world map. NPCs that have something to say will have a green arrow above them. The quest log also displays the quest giver and their location so you can easily find them if they give the reward.

[edit] Notes

  • Having multiple quests in your quest log that take place in the same area may cause them to conflict with each other. You may experience trouble with missing NPCs, weird NPC behavior, missing quest markers, or missing quest triggers. For example, some festival quests in Shing Jea Island conflict with the regular primary quests. One of the quests needs to be abandoned before completing either quest.
  • Be careful with quests requiring you to escort a person or group of people to a specific point, when that point is an area portal. A common mistake is to run through the portal. Doing so will cause the quest to reset back, and you will have to repeat the escort. Always wait on the glimmering marker on your Radar until the quest progresses.
  • Since some quests modify the type and number of NPCs that can be found in an explorable area, it may be advantageous or disadvantageous to leave certain quests uncompleted when vanquishing or farming.
