GW Calendar[edit]

Anybody know what days Canthan New Year falls on this year? The Chinese New Year starts on Jan 26th this year, according to Wiki. That's a Monday, so I figure either the event will occur the weekend prior to the 26th, or the following. Anybody know for sure?--24.92.116.83 01:49, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

It should be on the following weekend of the start of the Chinese New Year, as has happened the last three years. So I expect to see the Finale happen on the 1st. Kanna 03:51, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

It really sucks that Prophecies/Nightfall get 12 days + of Xmas and a week + of Halloween, yet Cantha only gets a mere weekend (Superbowl weekend no less!).

I would think it will start this weekend and run for a week. Though I'd love to see it run for 15 days since Chinese New Year is celebrated for 15 days. But a week is still good. :) Kanna 20:53, 20 January 2009 (UTC)
dont forget when they have to repeat events since noone plays the game anymore. cantha also gets the dragon festival and dragon festival redux. of course dont forget tyria/elona both get halloween again and christmas in july --adrin User adrin ecto sig.png 08:35, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Event schedule[edit]

Do we have an official schedule yet or will this be a copy of last years event.

Sell![edit]

Sell your Kuunavang's now!,After the Year of the dragon(Presuming they will use his skin)They will be worthless!--Neil2250User Neil2250 sig icon.jpg 10:45, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

I find that pretty presumptuous, and most likely misleading. IF they choose to use the Kuunavang skin for a mini for CNY, it will most certainly be a celestial. The standard mini kuunavang that came will the collector's edition will remain as rare and as valuable as it is now. Besides, the year of the Dragon isn't until 2012. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 12:06, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
so if gw2 isnt out by 2012 then we should worry about selling our kuunavangs XDAurenX 20:35, 23 December 2009 (UTC)
Why wouldn't the just use a miniature celestial in the shape of glint? PariahUser Pariah Pariahmoa.pngtalk 04:46, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
Probably because Kuunavang is much closer to a Chinese dragon and already associated with Cantha. Glint is more of a fantasy dragon. Plus, the miniature model is already available, they would just need to give it a celestial skin. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 05:36, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
Even if they do use the same skin (which seems likely based on the summoning stone) I doubt the price of the regular mini will be affected much. It's going to be a lot rarer than the celestial version and it's a green where the cele minis are always gold. Maybe some people who just want a cool mini dragon will pick the cele version because it's easier to find and likely cheaper, but other than that I doubt the price will be affected. 109.145.213.217 10:23, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Hosting Districts[edit]

Like Last year, The Forever Knights [FK] will be hosting a district. (perhaps even 2 if we manage it) Which district it will be will be announced on the CNY 2010 talk page. And most likely also on the GWO and Guru forums. I'm just wondering if the Hosting of a district should get its own page on the wiki? (And yes we have enough items to cover all 9 times the celestial critter shows up.)DBZVelena | (Talk page) User DBZVelena sig.jpg 00:09, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

TBH, districts that aren't covered are the rarity. Sponsoring one isn't noteworthy. 24.197.253.243 00:55, 19 January 2010 (UTC)

Celestial Tiger[edit]

Celestial Tiger does not only appear from Lunar Fortunes this year? "In addition to the items mentioned above, players will receive a special reward just for attending the end of this year's festival in Shing Jea Monastery—a Celestial Tiger miniature! Carry the divine beast's luck with you throughout the year!" Darthlight 00:10, 5 February 2010 (UTC)

Didn't they do that with the pig first year, then made a collector the next year because everyone had so many?--Orry 03:55, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
Lolwut? I don't recall them ever giving celestials out for being in attendance. And there isn't even an official page for Canthan New Years 2010 yet. Where the heck do you get your information? PariahUser Pariah Pariahmoa.pngtalk 05:04, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
Yes, they did it in 2007 with the miniature pig, (not celestial). Then then the following year, they had you trade in the miniature pigs for the celestial pigs because there were sooooo many mini pigs (I had something like 40). -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 05:32, 5 February 2010 (UTC)
As I said, Celestials. Unless they plan on going back to the way they did things with the Mini Pigs (which I highly doubt) we will recieve this year's mini as we have the last two times. PariahUser Pariah Pariahmoa.pngtalk 00:35, 6 February 2010 (UTC)

Canthan New Year compared with Chinese New Year[edit]

Canthan and Chinese New Year are roughly correlated, allowing us to make some educated guesses about when CNY will occur:

Year Chinese New Year Animal Sign Canthan New Year
Friday
# of days different
2007 18-Feb-07 Pig 16 Feb -2 days
2008 7-Feb-08 Rat 8 Feb -1 Day
2009 26-Jan-09 Ox 30 Jan +4 Days
2010 14-Feb-10 Tiger 12 Feb -2 Days
2011 3-Feb-11 Rabbit 4 FebTh +1 Days
2012 23-Jan-12 Dragon 27 Jan +4 Days
2013 10-Feb-13 Snake 8 Feb -2 Days
2014 31-Jan-14 Horse 31 Jan 0 Days
Th Started on Thursday, one day before date listed.

Predictions are italicized; CNY has always been the nearest Friday to the beginning of Chinese New Years that occurs after 21 Jan 24 Jan.  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 08:36, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

The nearest Friday to Jan 26, 2009, would've been Jan 23. So either they actually base it on the nearest Thursday (or the first Sunday on or after Chinese New Year, which amounts to the same thing but in a way that makes sense), or 2009 was just an anomolous delay. We'll see whether they use the 20th or 27th in 2012. Asidely, for 2013, you mean the 8th and -2. That said, I agree with the predictions. - Tanetris 09:24, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
Fixed. Re: 23 vs 30 Jan, they don't want it too close to Wintersday or Martin Luther King's BD, so mebbe I should have written the nearest Friday as long as it's after the 24th (which would make it never earlier than the last week of Jan). (@Tan: Thanks for fixing my math.)  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 10:57, 16 January 2011 (UTC)
Updated to show that 2011 prediction was correct (although ANet started the event on Thursday this time instead of Friday, as it had been since 2007; perhaps that's a Super Bowl Sunday effect).

Canthan New Year 2011[edit]

moved from Feedback_talk:Game_updates/20110106

I dont want to miss it, so...is it next weekend(28th Jan 2011) or in 2 weeks(4th Feb 2011) that we will get Canthan New Year 2011? I know that Chinese New Year 2011 Year of the Hare is on Thursday the 3rd Feb 2011...is it usually weekend, or whole week? I wanna know because im going camping on the 3rd...I am assuming that they are busy with the Canthan New Year preparations and that the next important update will come after that, since Canthan New Year is more important. 173.32.190.24 01:31, 21 January 2011 (UTC)

I don't think we'll know for certain when it'll be until this weekend event's announced. But to answer your question about how long it lasts, usually around 3-4 days. Canthan holidays don't get a lot of attention. It's even shorter than Wintersday Redux on the years that it has one. As for your last comment, I highly doubt they're working on anything specifically for the Canthan New Year (when was the last time any Canthan festival ever had anything of significance added to it?) So, I doubt they're busy working on it. They are, however, probably working on the next big updates. I just highly doubt that any of it is specifically related to this festival.--Res 18:21, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

Canthan New Year 2013, 2014, ...[edit]

I was wondering, how new celestials will be given ??? Still with Lunar Fortunes [New celestial] ??, Or with an other way ? For festival masks, SL said : “This isn’t just a change that we’re making for the Dragon Festival, but also for other hat-related festivals going forward. What it comes down to is simply that, moving forward, we aren’t going to have art resources to make new hats for festivals anymore. At some point, we had to consider a break with tradition and put out the first festival that doesn’t include something new." So, NEW and OLD celestial minis will be given like the new festival MASKS method ??? I really want to finish my collection of celestials in GW1 (and whynot in GW2 as well!), and a new way to get them will be appreciated. And people who missed and wanted an old one can get one ! Like poor people who want the celestial pig !--Seiken Deaths Angel 06:14, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

I wouldn't doubt that the minis are kept the same. They will recycle in due time (7 years for pig), unlike the other hats, and art resources for them have been done for a while. The only reason they would change this, to how I see it, will be when GW event attendance is at an all time low and they feel the believe the game will be not worth keeping servers running for another cycle through (at least) or something of that sort.
Event attendance is still pretty high, or has been at least. But lack of new content will make it low so I'm really hoping for new CNY and DF quests next year. Konig/talk 12:24, 29 June 2012 (UTC)
New would be good, but pig is the only one i missed. Plz Plz Piggies!! Hi Pig! oh and Waffles! 72.64.3.20 20:34, 4 January 2013 (UTC)
Based on what can be found in the Gw.dat, you will be able to obtain a token during the next Canthan New Year (similar to Dragon Festival, Halloween, and Wintersday) and trade it for "your choice of Lunar Festival miniature". See Feedback talk:Game updates/20120621#Update. --Silver Edge 21:29, 4 January 2013 (UTC)

Setting a Date in Stone[edit]

Looking over the pasts dates it would really be in both the developer's and the player's best interests if the Canthan New year had a fixed date or was started on the first Friday in February. Something like that would give returning players some kind of sense when the holiday starts. In my opinion, this event is often missed because of the "flexible" date that seldom coincides with the actual Chinese New Year (a lunar based event). --Wendy Black 07:56, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

CNY is a lunar holiday, so it makes sense that the date varies. What doesn't make sense is ANet failing to announce the date at least 1 month in advance. 75.37.16.51 10:10, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
I suppose so, but the other issue is they place it inside the Shing Jea Monastery, instead of Kaineng City where it truly belongs. --Wendy Black 11:52, 19 January 2013 (UTC)

Time to farm that Horse![edit]

So, who else is going for that Horse + 1 other using the token? I've already got 2 sets of quests done! DonutxDude (talk) 14:00, 1 February 2014 (UTC)

I accidentally let my Yakkington fanboy shine through and got next year's celestial this year. Whoops. So yeah, should probably make up for that by farming the horse. - Infinite - talk 10:19, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

Doing quests on another account[edit]

So I had no problems doing the CNY quests on my main account, but when I was going to do them again with my 2nd account, only 1 char can get the quests, although all characters are above level 5. And not all chars can get Take My Sister, Please. What is going on? Batchie (talk) 12:50, 4 February 2014 (UTC)

I'm sorry to hear you're having difficulty with quest repeatability, but I'm glad you brought it up. Looking at your report and also the talk on the mini quest page, it looks like people are running afoul of a limitation of the Guild Wars quest system. I'll explain it here and point that conversation this way.
Quests that are limited to "once per," whether it's by account or character, do not know the date, only whether the content is active or not. They reset only if the account/character enter the game while that content is off. If you log out while the content is active and don't reenter the game until the content is active again, those quests don't know the content ever stopped and restarted.
So, in the cases we're seeing now, say you entered the game with a character during Canthan New Year 2013, did all the quests, and then logged out. If you entered the game with that character any time before Canthan New Year 2014, the quests would reset and be ready when the festival came around again. But if you didn't enter the game with that character any time between Canthan New Year 2013 and 2014, then when you log in this year, the quests think, "Must still be Canthan New Year; I won't reset myself yet."
If this is 'not' the case for you (meaning you used those characters during another time, like Wintersday), then it may be some other issue, and I'd appreciate it if you could log a more full report over on the Support Forums.
At this time, we don't have the resources allocated to tackle the kind of change necessary to remove this restriction, but I hope the explanation will help those who want to participate fully in their favorite holidays work around it. ~ Matthew Moore (talk) 02:36, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
Is this similar to what causes certain Zaishen quests to be unavailable for certain characters (as noted in the first bug note at Zaishen Challenge Quest#Notes)? --Silver Edge 03:00, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
A similar thing, but not the same system as the event automation. ~ Matthew Moore (talk) 20:45, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
Your explaination makes sense. Thank you, Matthew. I'm still pissed that I don't get any chance to do the quests multiple times again. At least I got to do it once for a 2nd mini this year. Well, at least I won't have issues like this on this year's Dragon Festival. Batchie (talk) 05:32, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
Thank you very much for the explanations. Much appreciated! Steve1 (talk) 15:01, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
This explains a lot and I am not very happy, since I did not had this issue last year adn the previous year, thank you for your time, it's good to know this, too bad there is enough resources for RNG cash shop items in gw2 but I am used to it after guild wars beyond cancelation I am not suprised we get bugs like this due to lack of resources.85.241.127.142 21:08, 5 February 2014 (UTC)NotAHappyCostumer.
Matthew, can you clarify how this works for quests that can be completed once per account each special event? You stated "They reset only if the account/character enter the game while that content is off." So if a character has completed Take My Sister, Please in Canthan New Year 2013, will that quest only reset for 2014 if while Canthan New Year is inactive:
[a] the specific character that completed the quest (and acquired the Imperial Miniature Token) enters the game, or
[b] any character on that account enters the game.
Also, does it reset Take My Sister, Please for all characters on the account or only the characters that entered the game while Canthan New Year is inactive? Thank you. --Silver Edge 23:26, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
Apologies. I shortened the example in my explanation to just per-character quests, but I can see now the extrapolation to per-account quests isn't super clear.
For once-per-account quests, if any character completes the quest during its respective festival, then the progress for the account is set to "already completed." It will be reset for the account if any character from the account enters the game while the festival is not active. (Note that simply logging in to character select is not enough, but that the character used need not be the same as that which completed the per-account quest.)
So, if Char A does "Take My Sister, Please" during Canthan New Year 2013, and Char B enters the game any time over the next year, then progress is reset and any character on the account—Char A, Char B, or even Char C—can do "Take My Sister, Please" on behalf of the account during Canthan New Year 2014. ~ Matthew Moore (talk) 00:38, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

Zero dishes[edit]

I don't think a disguise is applied to player characters anymore when zero dishes are completed. Immediately after receiving Crates of Fireworks, Red Gift Bags, and Celestial Summoning Stones in one district, I went to a district with nothing but AFKs at Nine Rings and near the chefs. None of them were disguised by Horse Form. I talked to the chefs and based on their dialogues it sounded like zero dishes were completed. The Celestial Horse was still running around that district, but it wasn't being followed by several level 2 Horses (which I'm assuming won't appear if zero dishes are completed). --Silver Edge 10:38, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

Nevermind, it seems Horse Form is only applied for a short duration (less than 30 seconds). --Silver Edge 11:21, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

I was rather disappointed. The horse form was pretty cool. Speaking of 0 dishes, the coordinator What's-Her-Face says that line about "The celestial has feasted, blah blah," to kick off the final segment even when the poor thing has had nothing to eat. 67.246.60.56 21:49, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

Weather issues[edit]

Is Anet still going to do redux finales in future when the weather knocks out internet and power? Just wondering since this recent storm did screw up some areas. 67.246.60.56 19:44, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

What recent storm? Someone, somewhere will always miss out on an event because of circumstances beyond their control. But unless those issues affected the servers, it's unlikely Anet will go out of their way to redo events when the system is already running on life support. 76.253.2.43 23:20, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Other lingering NPCs[edit]

I still see the Rollerbeetle guy, the Lunar Fortune collector, the Red Gift Bag collector, Sheng Yi, and Seiji. Dunno if they're all going to also hang around another week, though. ...And talking to the Rollerbeetle guy just took me to the race staging area, WTF? 67.246.60.56 20:27, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

It's odd that Zaishen Supply Masters don't still appear, while the other Victory Token collectors still appear (i.e. Sheng Yi and Seiji). Rollerbeetle Trainer probably still appears to allow entry to Rollerbeetle Racing (outpost) so players can access the NPCs that can only be found there (i.e. Kenichi, Little Jack, and Mifune). --Silver Edge 00:27, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
As far as it goes, I think this is an excellent change. I'd actually been thinking, "I really wish more NPCs would stick around longer so we don't have to waste precious event time sorting things out with them." 67.246.60.56 09:11, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

Easter Egg 2024 Festival[edit]

Devs seem to have added a NEW Easter Egg for CNY 2024. While you are doing the Shing Jea quests your account will have the DIVINE AURA https://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Divine_Aura WITHOUT it being on your account via Collectors Editions

The "switch" that gets flipped appears to be for the entire account and it stays flipped "on" until you log out of the game entirely. Until you log out entirely you CAN switch between characters and use the aura by /dance

Starting the quests (NOT including Take my Sister) seems to switch ON the switch. Logging out of the game, if you've finished the quests, seems to switch it OFF.

While it is switched on you can also use the aura on other looping emotes by triggering /dance first and then the other emote. This seems to work with /dancenew ALSO even without /dancenew being available on your account. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:146.70.202.165 (talk).

Noon EST 2/7/24 Update. Can't duplicate. Found one character that had not done the quests and I can't duplicate. Maybe switch was turned off with the finale, maybe I just had some kind of bug. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:146.70.202.154 (talk).
