Accepting Quest Reward[edit]

A very minor annoyance but they should allow you to accept the quest reward right there on the spot from Zei Ri if he's just standing right there beside you. :-)

Zei Ri quest reward.jpg

--DaveBaggins 05:29, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

Is it just me or do you have to complete Cleansing Bukdek in HM before you can get quest after the Minister Cho Estate quest? I finished Minister Cho's and returned to get reward. He had no other quests for me. The only one I had on me was the HM one Cleansing Bukdek. User:I_Shall_Return 20:31, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

In the reward dialogue for the Minister Cho's Estate quest he tells you to talk to Initiate Tsuriai at Seitung Harbor. That Sounds Risky | 20:39, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

Spoilers?[edit]

Pretty sure he implies heavily he's Togo's son. 174.108.82.105 16:23, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

Hmm, didn't catch the implication. Who would be the mother? Brother Mhenlo??? --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:I Shall Return (talk).

(Reset indent) I got the impression from his dialogue that when his father died he became an afflicted. He did give the impression that he had lived on Shing Jea at some point, so he could possibly be the Lost Boy from the Minister Cho's Estate mission if they're trying to make a connection at all. That Sounds Risky | 22:22, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

I would assume that connection is the most valid. It does, however, mean that either the devs misspelled a name, or we are making a very tenuous connection, if there is one at all. The lost boy is the son of Guardsman Zui, no "Zei". But still...the most logical connection IMHO. Kellenoftavadon 21:39, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
I got the impression he was Togo's son too. His father for sure died during the time of the plague, but why would he have respects to pay at Tahnnakai Temple? The only dead person there who died during the plague was Togo. So it seems to me that he's paying respects to Togo - or possibly Vizu, who's also connected to the plague, but Togo seems more likely. Konig/talk 22:39, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
If he was his son, he would know that Togo did not turn into an afflicted and wouldn't said this: "Every time I face the Afflicted, some part of me fears that my father might have become one of these abominations. How would I feel if I knew, I wonder?" 178.36.41.200 01:43, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
Where's that line from? I looked through the quests and do not see it. Konig/talk 03:49, 9 July 2011 (UTC)
Edit:NVM, it's from the Sunjiang District quest. Must have overlooked it, and it's up in the NM quest article, only the HM article. Konig/talk 03:52, 9 July 2011 (UTC)

INB4 Zei Ri is Ashu 220.244.124.125 16:26, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

Level[edit]

Maybe my memory eludes me, but isn't he the first non-enemy NPC with a level higher than 20? ~Nohjo 20:02, 8 July 2011 (UTC)

Moahawk during april 1st joke was lvl 40. Damysticreaper 20:16, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
No, the Veldrunner Centaur (boss) is level 24. --174.130.9.116 21:27, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
Should perhaps mention he is the highest level (non-minion) allied npc that actively participates in combat in the party? Or is there an even higher one. -Wrei110.175.241.56 10:30, 11 July 2011 (UTC)
The HM only quests include level 30 allies (such as Evennia). Konig/talk 16:40, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

Looking Ahead?[edit]

Anyone else think he could be the next rit hero? Seeing as he is rather friendly, despite recent events, HFT anyone? he seems like a pretty cool guy, who isn't quite willing to watch people die... As evident when you kill that guy [not naming him due to spoilers]. Derikvyreflame 02:20, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

That seems unlikely, as it would lead to the odd situation of him simultaneously being in Kaineng Center handing out quests, and also adventuring with people. He's no doubt one of those who'll survive whatever violence you mete out during the WoC climax, though. -- Hong 07:26, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
How is that different from Gwen, Keiran, MoW, Margrid, Zhed, Tahlkora, Koss, or Dunkoro? Personally, I think there's a good chance we'll get him as a rit hero, Miku as an assassin hero, and maybe, if we're lucky, Reiko as a mesmer hero. -- Armond WarbladeUser Armond sig image.png 07:52, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
^ You forgot Livia, Ogden, and Vekk. Konig/talk 13:50, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
I thought they stood around in exploitable areas, not cities. -- Armond WarbladeUser Armond sig image.png 14:59, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
Ogden and Vekk are in Boreal Station and Livia in Vlox Falls. Da Mystic Reaper 15:13, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
If you were going for outposts and not explorable areas, then you need to remove your initial list. Those are all in the Command Post or Hall of Monuments, never an outpost (except for MoW who isn't in any). For explorables, also add Razah who's in two explorables (Nameless Isle and Heart of Abaddon). Point is: Not an issue or an odd situation, as there are both explorable and outpost versions of heroes which give quests. Konig/talk 15:50, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
Herp. -- Armond WarbladeUser Armond sig image.png 18:36, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
...THinking about it, then we'd have the akward moment when he suddenly lowers 8 levels and becomes level 20... Of course, lore can explain this through him being demoted or something. IDK. or just anomoly tag ^^ Derikvyreflame 22:24, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
Lvl drops are already present since day 1. Some NPC's seen in pre-searing have a lower level in post-searing. It would be a reason for a tag but let's say he traded in his aditional levels for a big increase in available skills. Da Mystic Reaper 22:46, 7 October 2011 (UTC)
Heh, then I guess there is still hope ^^ Derikvyreflame 22:58, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

Sweet, looks provable enough for me, anyone else able to confirm yet? I'm on the last 2 of NM so it will be awhile before I can. 209.159.238.141 08:00, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
I'm hoping this is legit because I want a new Rit hero but that the Hero in the image has the same face and hair as my Rit. I'd recognise that wonky stray hair anywhere. I'm guessing someone grabbed their Rit, threw on an Aegis of Unity costume and created a Mercenary hero with the name Zei Ri. An image showing the name of his armour would prove whether it's a Mercenary or not conclusively, but until then I'm erring on the side of hoax here. --60.230.113.104 09:45, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
Normally I would agree with you (reason I asked for proof as well) but if you have Mercenary Hero's, you would know that the icons for the armor he is wearing is NOT the mercenary "same on all default crap" armor that Mercenaries actually get. He has on ministry armor according to those icons, or, really good photoshop from that part as well. 209.159.238.141 09:48, 10 February 2012 (UTC)
Good point. You've moved me back to being warily excited. Sorry for doubting you, Beware of Balthazar. --60.230.113.104 09:53, 10 February 2012 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Since he appears to lose the Initiate title as hero, would that warrant a new page? Or just keep the redirect and maybe add a note. That Sounds Risky | 02:23, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

Keiran Thackeray has many different titles throughout the game, he only has one name. I'd say leave it as is and add a note. Normally I'd say we should go by his name as a hero but it's kind of spoilery considering he's kind of a hidden hero. 58.106.137.36 08:36, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

I just wanna say.... I SO FRIKIN CALLED THIS!!!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!! *fistpump* Now, who wants to finish WoC in HM with me? XD Derikvyreflame 04:39, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

Aww, I wish he had kept on his helmet because it really looks cool. 220.255.1.136 09:10, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

Helmet doesn't really matter. Btw does anyone know what level he is as a hero? level 28? 77.162.250.114 11:23, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
Lvl 20, you can't get higher then lvl 20. --Kilaa1000 12:07, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

Move tag[edit]

Could I perhaps suggest we split this into the Hero "Zei Ri" and the npc met in the outpost "Initiate Zei Rei" - I'm thinking anyone who visits this is going to see a whacking great spoiler for the end of the WoC pt3. File:User Chieftain Alex Chieftain Signature.jpg Chieftain Alex 22:19, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

I agree with that. But Gwen, Keiran nor Miku aren't split to 'hero' and 'normal NPC', so I don't expect Zei Ri to be. -- Sagi User Sagittario Asura symbol.png 22:35, 11 February 2012 (UTC)
Nope, but it could have a Spoiler tag added. --MushaUser Musha Sigc.png 00:51, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
I only mentioned it because the wiki kinda ruined the suprise for a friend looking up where miku was in Shenzun tunnnels.. File:User Chieftain Alex Chieftain Signature.jpg Chieftain Alex 01:05, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
It's also a spoiler for Morgahn, Jurah, Princess Tahlkora, and several other NPCs. Looking up Master Togo tells you he dies, same with Rurik and others.
Guess what, wiki has spoilers. oh mai gosh! Disagree with split and move. Split is unnecessary and we've been working to combine pages despite spoilers unless where it would be more confusing for readers. Move is more inaccurate because we use the most commonly used name - in Keiran's case it is "Keiran Thackeray" (used for all of HotN and as a hero, which is his most common place appearance), and for here it's the outpost he will always be in even for those who haven't beaten Factions - e.g., Initiate Zei Ri. Konig/talk 11:14, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
For Move. Historically, it is the Hero's default name displayed on the Party Window that overrides any other official rank/title, former names, nicknames & other name-variants. Plus, many contributors have been dropping the "Initiate" when updating as of late. --Falconeye 20:52, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
You do realize there was ONE case where hero names are changed from NPC to hero encounters right? That one being Keiran. There is no "precidence" (or as you put it "historically") for one case. Koss, MoW, Tahlkora, etc. all have a single displayed name. They have a full name/real name/title in lore, so we bold that in their articles, but mechanically as NPC they only have one.
Keiran and Zei are the sole heroes who have two names as NPCs. Konig/talk 21:20, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
Disagree; even if his name changes it's still the same person, and having two articles on the same person would be kinda confusing. And on a comprehensive wiki like this, spoilers are to be expected --User Kyx signature Skull.gifKyx 23:03, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
Against a split: (1) The wiki cannot be comprehensive and avoid spoilers, especially if it's about obtaining a hero; that page has to list all the heroes without hiding them behind a spoiler note or show/hide button. (2) It's distracting to split solely because a character is known by multiple names (or displays multiple names in-game).
Against a rename: people tend to drop Initiate and use Zei Ri. However, it's also true that people say Jin instead of Acolyte Jin and Sousuke instead of Acolyte Sousuke (if they even spell it correctly), and... — but we haven't retitled any of the other hero articles. If we rename this one, we should rename the others — that seems like too much effort (a lot of redirects to fix) for too little value (we already have common/short name redirects for this) to the average reader. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 18:22, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
Against split and rename. We do warn of spoilers and Zei Ri as a hero is already a public secret. Zei's change from foe to friend is no different than General Morgahn's and we don't even spoiler alert him. --Manassas User Manassas Mannysig.png 15:31, 16 February 2012 (UTC)

Hard Mode[edit]

"Zei Ri joins your party upon completion of the quest The Final Confrontation (Hard mode) at the end of the Winds of Change hard mode quest chain." I only own Factions, no one will accept me into their party because of my limited skills, the only hero I have is Miku and to earn Zei Ri is to repeat this in HM (again fighting foes with non-Factions skills)? Oh joy... 220.255.1.109 05:01, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Grab yourself some friends and/or join an excellent PvE guild. --Falconeye 07:52, 12 February 2012 (UTC)
I actually agree with 220 in that I wish ANet had included a way to unlock Zei Ri as a Hero without needing to go through all the HM quests. (They did this once before to make Razah more easily unlockable for players, so it's not without precedent.) Perhaps they could make an update where you can turn in your Imperial Dragon Tear to Zei Ri and unlock him as a Hero that way. To make it fair on people who may have already used their Imperial Dragon Tears, make the Tears tradeable in the same update. Hmm... Does ANet have a location where we can make suggestions to them? - Zaxares 01:01, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
I'd rather like an option that, once you have completed the normal mode quest sequence on one character, you can skip to doing just the Hard mode versions on all other characters (for a reduction in gold maybe) File:User Chieftain Alex Chieftain Signature.jpg Chieftain Alex 01:05, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
I'll pay anything just to unlock Zei Ri for my PvE character (except real money)! NM was already sickening enough for me, but HM is simply impossible. I thought games were supposed to be for enjoyment, but I found WoC to be extremely hard and tedious. I just wished ANet made the quests easier to complete. After all as I said, I only own Factions, and I'm not willing to buy the other three campaigns just to get the skills and heroes needed to even the odds. 220.255.1.167 14:05, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
You do realize that Beyond content is designed to be for end-game players, right? In other words, while you only need Factions to play Winds of Change, it is meant for players who have more than just Factions. Konig/talk 14:55, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
Do you have a link to where the developers said that? 220.255.2.135 04:29, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
Considering it was said while testing the content, no. But it's rather clear that's the case, otherwise they'd be sticking to easier foes and, most likely, skills obtainable in Factions for the enemies. Konig/talk 12:57, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
Not to mention the rather conspicuous name of Guild Wars Beyond. You really can't get more clear than that. War in Kryta and Winds of Change are both part of Guild Wars Beyond, and are thus beyond the original game content of Factions, Prophecies, and even Eye of the North. In other words, oriented for end-game players. --MushaUser Musha Sigc.png 19:06, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
And thus requires players to go "beyond" their normal capabilities to win. Indeed, Winds of Change does not seem to be intended as a casual playthrough. Derikvyreflame 20:05, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
I thought Guild Wars Beyond was introduced to fill the storyline gap between GW1 and GW2, at least that's what I recall. If only the developers officially said everything that was stated here, only then would I declare that HM is impossible for me and just move on. I'm nonetheless very grateful to have earned Miku (albeit with extreme difficulty even though it was just NM), and as a Factions player I am exhilarated as she is my first ever hero, and from the looks of it will be my only one. 220.255.1.124 05:57, 17 February 2012 (UTC)
Well, Guild Wars Beyond provides the storyline for the time frame between GW1 and GW2, but that's not WHY it was introduced. The events leading up to GW2 just provided a pretext for the live team to introduce more content, and give endgame players a challenge. But if it's a quote you want, then a quote you shall have: "Winds of Change was balanced at the approximate level of the Titan quests, with the assumption that this was endgame content, and players who had been through everything else would want something on this level to satisfy their need for challenge." From John Stumme's latest blog post - source is here. --MushaUser Musha Sigc.png 02:53, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

(Reset indent) On WoC HM: List of hard mode quests: "Be cautioned: Hard Mode quests are intended to be a difficult challenge to overcome, and we're just getting started with them. Be on the lookout for more of these quests to test your heroism in future updates."
The Winds of Change HM quests follow this mentality. Beyond content is, as one can clearly see from the builds created, meant to be treated as end-game content and thus either as hard as or harder than the elite areas of the games - as John Stumme clearly stated as Musha quoted. You shouldn't need a quote to see this in the builds - even in War in Kryta's enemy builds, which are far harder than Mursaat or Titans. Konig/talk 13:42, 17 February 2012 (UTC)

Story Gap[edit]

So, other than the cutscene, we never see anything about Zei Ri, then all of a sudden, he joins our party. Not very cathartic. --MushaUser Musha Sigc.png 02:16, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

In The Final Confrontation (Hard mode), he joins the fight against Reiko (probably with some other MoP defects like how Eri, Daisuke, Xin, and Soar all join with generic members). I would assume he also is present when turning in the reward, like said mentioned individuals. Konig/talk 11:56, 13 February 2012 (UTC)
Wait, Daisuke does, too? He never joined my battle nor does he appear in Shenzun Tunnels when it's over. What is required for that to happen? --MushaUser Musha Sigc.png 03:39, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
Completing Redemption of the Lost.Konig/talk 10:54, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
Does it need to be done in HM? Cause Daisuke never showed up. And he's not in the tunnel. Any ideas? --MushaUser Musha Sigc.png 18:05, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
Zei ri only appears in Hm, and Daisuke will only appear if redemption Hm is done. File:User Chieftain Alex Chieftain Signature.jpg Chieftain Alex 18:13, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
Daisuke shows only for the mode in which you did the Redemption quest, I think (e.g., you did Redemption in NM but not HM, he won't show in HM). I think. Konig/talk 18:43, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
I did the Nm version of redemption only, and I got him as an ally in Nm but not Hm - so your assertion is likely correct. File:User Chieftain Alex Chieftain Signature.jpg Chieftain Alex 20:09, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Duplicate Zei Ri's?[edit]

Just curious, but what do duplicate Zei Ri's show up as? Ministry of Purity Ritualist? Seems like that'd be a little too long to fit. Maybe just Ministry Ritualist? The vast majority of players aren't even close to acquiring this hero, due to the effort required, so it's hard to check. 82.11.226.30 12:23, 18 February 2012 (UTC)

You got him? if so we can team up and get the answer.. --Kilaa1000 19:17, 18 February 2012 (UTC)
It doesn't change his name. Can provide a pic when I play WoC again with a friend tomorrow. 96.233.187.105 05:00, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
Yes it does. Duplicate Zei Ri's show up as "Zealous Ritualist"--Manassas User Manassas Mannysig.png 19:20, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

Factions Only?[edit]

Can I obtain this hero if I only own Factions? If yes, what other heros can I obtain? I not, which campaign(s) do I need to buy to get him? --68.45.253.189 21:53, 22 March 2012 (UTC)Recon Legend

Reference: You can obtain both (Miku & Zei Ri) if you only have access to Factions. About 50% of available heroes can only be obtained via accesss to Nightfall; the other remaining 30%/10% requires access to Prophecies/Eye of the North. --Falconeye 01:54, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

ok awesome. but how long would you expect the average person to complete the entire winds of change quest? ive heard it takes quite a while so is it worth all the time and effort to get these two heroes considering that i only own factions? ---72.53.194.237Recon Legend

I'm concious that my times all used well setup 7 heroes - so maybe you could expect times upto 4x longer with henchmen (I've become ruthlessly efficient), but it took me about 18 hours over 3 evenings in normal mode, and roughly a further 4 evenings in hm. You may find the hard mode versions are too difficult without heroes - but there are still some humans buzzing about doing Winds of change. File:User Chieftain Alex Chieftain Signature.jpg Chieftain Alex 14:17, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
If you only own Factions, don't want to shell out cash for mercenaries or the US$10 for EotN, then...I don't think it's worth going through WoC just for the heroes. If you enjoy the challenge or really, really want to earn a Lockbox to have a chance at getting your own Panda or WoC-mini, then the heroes will be a nice bonus.
Having access to a single assassin hero isn't game altering. Getting access to a Rit with only Factions-based skills will make a bigger difference, but I don't think it's enough to justify your time for that alone. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 18:19, 26 March 2012 (UTC)

Elites AND Uniques[edit]

"He is one of three heroes to have an elite as one of his default skills." Those same heroes (Zei Ri, Miku and Keiran) are also the only three with an unique item as their default weapon. Should that be implied? Also it might be that I've missed someone, but I think those are the only three. Jeree95 09:32, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Portrait Update[edit]

Can we get an actual screenshot of Zei Ri without his helmet? The current portrait is that of a generic [File:Ministry of Purity m.jpg]. --Falconeye 20:04, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
