Think he'll notice if I sneak him a couple destroyer cores?141.158.102.42 19:18, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Lol, then he will ban your account for scamming. :D --65.0.128.19 22:26, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Just noticed a bug with this one. He collects Roaring Ether Hearts but on the mission map he is labeled as a Roaring Ether Claw collector.

Nick is never labeled on the map. However, he is standing next to Dahwan, who is a Claw collector, and is the one labeled on the map. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 22:28, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

Excellent Luck[edit]

Well, if I wasn't already planning to spend the afternoon farming elementals in the Mirror of Lyss for Lightbringer points, Nick sure made it a lot easier for me by coming over. This is going to be a hard one though, I've never even seen an Ether Heart--Hawkins 19:23, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Quite annoying. They seem to drop claws much more than hearts and being mesmers with resurrection signets doesn't help. At least you only need 5.--SunJinyu 19:58, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

This is worse than guardian moss. This item is so rare... and ethers have resurrection. > > --65.0.128.19 22:27, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
Girst run got 2, second run got 1, then like 10 full runs through Lyss and nothing! Was doing it with 2 heroes and me. And nobody is selling, either. Every once in a while you'll see one at 4k, but screw that, might as well buy the gift at that price. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 23:04, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
Its not that rare of a drop, I got three in about 5 runs over an hour, with a full party of 8, so far. Just use the Lightbringer point farming route for Mirror of Lyss in this wiki. The res is a nuiasence, but with a full party, its not that hard.--Hawkins 23:54, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
Oh, it wasn't hard, I did it with only 2 heroes, but still no drops. I tried Adhashim, not so good, many djinn and few ethers. I tried the two boss groups in Forum Highlands, also nothing after like an hour. And NOBODY is selling. ¬ ¬ User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 02:31, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

I know a few people keep saying "Its not that hard I got my drops fairly quickly"...apparently you have more time to grind away than I do. Spent 4.5 hours trying to farm these stupid things and only got 2. Was doing it with a party of 2. Took a break and spent the rest of the day with nothing. This week is getting skipped. Sorry nick your fetish will have to go unsatisfied this week :S Nay the One and Only 06:12, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
I'm pissed. 3 days to farm 5 roaring ether hearts and Nicholas gives me junk. Ramei Arashi
@Nay the One and Only. I know, had too many ppl say "Well, I got mine fast, it's easy". It's not what you want to hear when you've spent an eternity farming hearts with absolutely no luck. The game decides what drops you get, not the person farming it. Some ppl don't seem to grasp that, lol. 85.19.140.9 12:09, 10 January 2010 (UTC)

Depends on your definition of "easy". If by easy, you mean that the enemies are easy to kill, then yes - welcome to GW. If by easy, you mean the drop rate is decent enough to not take 4-5 hours to farm, then sadly you're mistaken. Karate User Karate Jesus KJ for sig.png Jesus 17:52, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Well, I hope most people who bother to farm the Nick stuff, either just for themselves or to sell, has learned by now to save collectables they get that Nick hasn't yet asked for, at least the tedious ones to get. Just farming the Ethers last week should have netted a couple Ruby essences, and he's asked for Sapphire before. 600/Smite Hidden City, especially with the quest Gift of the Djinn should get a fair bunch in a decent amount of time :) 83.251.194.11 18:14, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
You really have that much inventory space? Saphire was like 4-6 months ago. Justice 18:27, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
Some people do have enough space to keep every or most collectibles in storage. I just keep the collectibles that would be harder to farm than most, like Ruby and Sapphire essences, any Wurm Husks, Mursaat Tokens, Soul Stones, etc. If you know it'll be hard to farm for you and you don't want to buy, you'll know what to keep and what to sell. — Gares 18:56, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

"130 Dervish?" "Why are they making these runs so hard?" - You guys are making this soooo much harder than it is. Leave Bone Palace into Alkali Pan. Hold CTRL. Look right. If there's 2 Ruby Djinns, get in the wurm and kill them. Resign and repeat. If there aren't 2 Ruby Djinns, take two steps back into town and rezone. It takes less than a minute, and you don't need a single skill on your bar. There's no point in forming teams and running all over Dasha or Alkali. Think people. -Ninjatek 19:14, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Or just 600/smite the hidden city. Killing them isn't the hard part. The hard part is actually getting the drops, because the rate is so low. Karate User Karate Jesus KJ for sig.png Jesus 19:25, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
That's why speed is important. My way is faster. -Ninjatek 19:27, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
Um...you can do hidden city with a hero and kill about 20 djinns in like 2 minutes. How is using the wurm faster? Karate User Karate Jesus KJ for sig.png Jesus 19:29, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Fun? This means one'll have to kill maybe 50 ruby djinns, a pretty rare enemy, and don't even think about doing it with a full team. Seriously groan-inducing. What's next, Bleached Shells? Feh. 213.112.197.46 20:06, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
Bleached Shells would indeed hurt. But not as much as the hearts. I remember farming them for armor and it wasn't as bad as last week's bs. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 20:11, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

I'm more scared for the day he asks for Giant Tusks to be honest, the Bleached Shells at least have a decent droprate from the wurms, it's just rare due to how rare the wurms are :s 83.251.194.11 02:10, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
Why the terrible drop-rate? I remember this discussion from my classes. It's called randomized player reward systems, one of the easiest to program/laziest design/worst ways to reward players (feel free to pick your favorite, all are true). The fact that by taking any npcs at all dramatically cuts your rewards also is a kick into the least desired location of your body (results may vary). Now, exchangeable tokens that vary by creatures was a good thing. Had they just reduced the number of particular creatures or raised the exchange rate on those tokens and (either way) made the tokens always drop, they'd have eliminated a pretty big problem. But apparently a lot of games are happy to over-reward one player per million while severely under- or unrewarding the rest. It's no wonder why players leave games in a rage; punishing hours of effort with the tedious and unfortunate activity of farming items that they should be getting regularly is just poor design. Seryu 05:45, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
Well compared to last week the drop rate is much MUCH better! At least for me. On about 50 runs I had zero ether heart and yesterday it took me 20-30min to get the 5 essences, go figure! 194.2.20.67 08:01, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
At this stage i have 2 comments: (1) I disagree with anet with selecting items with low droprate, sice it induces players to solo farm instead of the concept of playing together and (2) does anyone have a confirm that getting heros and hench and sending them outside radar range increase droprate of these items? -- Pixy | Talk User pixy hand.png 11:15, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
Huh, 20-30 minutes. For the average rewards those gifts give, that's actually the amount of time it should take for everyone. My average of seven and a half hours a week... soloing for this stuff and getting nothing better than fireworks five out of every six weeks really doesn't cut it for player motivation. As far as flagging heroes and henchies, it does seem to return the drop rate to soloing levels, but unless you're slowly flagging them to vanquish an area, it's not even worth bringing them at all while farming. Seryu 11:27, 12 January 2010 (UTC)
Flagging heroes away does actually return the droprates to exactly soloing levels. I've done pretty extensive research in droprates hero flagging and soloing. Only difference is that you have to share the gold coin drops with your heroes when flagging. Believe me! Manassas Ritualist-tango-icon-20.png 14:34, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

YOU PEOPLE DISAGREE WITH ALL!! Nothing makes you happy you want a free game that has everYthing you ever wanted, the way you wanted etc, and if in the game they nerf or boost something you like to use then game is bad, if they add new stuff you cry or say that isnt enough compared with like a stup... red big dragon to kill so at the end my recommendation is make youre game take it out for all us to see and let us destroy it with nonsense cry. John's got a good point on that matter, a localization bug is a very much minor thing (barely enough to be called a bug except in reporting to or within the development company) and in most cases it can be worked around without causing issues with game play unlike bugs that would really need to be reported or require public attention that can outright halt playability. To that end, I made a change that should help things to get fixed rather than just the public flaunting method it was (especially when it doesn't occur. 5k faction per amber x 15 = 75,000 faction. Oh wait - I forgot, it's Grind Wars these days anyway. Feh. Yume 18:02, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
Just do FFF's. It'll take at least an hour (maybe more) to get the faction considering how expensive amber is, but it's doable. However, 5k faction is just a joke for 1 amber.... Karate User Karate Jesus KJ for sig.png Jesus 18:03, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
Is it really grind if it's for items that in no way effect your performance? Or if you enjoy FA, AB, JQ, or vanquishing? Manifold User Manifold Jupiter.jpg 18:05, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
It's 75,000 faction for all 15 amber. Even if you really love CM's or AB or even vanquishing....it's going to take a while. And DTSC only takes 15 mins per run, and considering that the trader is out of amber now, the prices are going to skyrocket. I'm just suggesting doing it if you want to farm them. If you don't, take the 3-4 hours and get the faction the fun way. Karate User Karate Jesus KJ for sig.png Jesus 18:12, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
Right, it just seems people get stuck in the mindset of "I must acquire this item, so I will do it fastest way, even if I don't like that activity as much as the slower way, nor will I buy it even if I could make more money farming for money during that time". Manifold User Manifold Jupiter.jpg 18:19, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
Well, then I'm sorry if it seemed like I was trying to perpetuate that. Personally, I'll probably just FA/AB for the faction (if I have the time/desire to actually play GW this week), as I still sometimes enjoy those two arenas. I hope other people have fun trying to get it too, but as I have recently developed into a casual player, I can understand why some people may just say, "Fuck it" this week. Karate User Karate Jesus KJ for sig.png Jesus 18:24, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
DSC is max 15 min for 17K faction. nowadays it's 12min with a good group wich means 5 runs for a total of 85K in 1 hour. thats what you need and you have 2 extra to spare. Not very hard i gues? Rhonin Soren 18:39, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

17k Faction ? This must mean Hard Mode? Which would mean the only people getting the gifts this week have to had already beaten Factions. Is this the first time The Traveler has asked for a "Crafting Material"? ..And such and expensive one with horrible availability. This would be better if there was a stronger likely hood getting better items than normal in your gifts...but I doubt that. It might make more sense to just sell the Amber on the price spike and forget the worthless Hunter's Ale, Rock Candies and Jars of Honey. This is almost as bad as getting similar worthless crap from the Zaishen chest like Creme brule and Firewater.

Screw the gifts, im going to just farm faction(into amber) and sell it. If amber gets to or above 1 2/3 k then you can just easily buy the gifts. i generaly sell mine at 4k a pop so that number would be 1 1/3 k. Justice 20:14, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

Potential Trivia?[edit]

I think it's clear that Nicholas is a Kurzick fan. He has us killing Luxons (albeit outcasts), and then has us supporting the Kurzick's need of Amber. And he's even been to the Echovald more often than the Jade Sea (and at that, he's never mentioned being with the Luxons!). Go Nicholas the Kurzick. :p -- Konig/talk 02:09, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

The outcasts are anti-Luxon, so it was an aid to the Luxons to farm them. C'mon, you're the guy working on all the lore stuff, you should be better at this sort of thing. --Kyoshi (Talk) User Kyoshi sig.png 02:12, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

I am also wondring why he is looking for something from a giant in order to find a link between Dolyaks and some extinct race that had Dolyak-like qualities (hmmm, could the race be a sheep?). For that matter... how could the ancestor of the Dolyaks be in the Sea (as that is what the area was in the past, not a desert) when Dolyaks are from the frigid Shiverpeaks? This week makes little sense with lore Q Q -- Konig/talk 22:14, 15 March 2010 (UTC)

Whats all this aquatic talk about? These giants dont seam to be swimmers. Perhaps if they were called Ancient Massive Jawbones... Justice 16:08, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
Nicholas is looking for the ancestor of the Dolyaks, over a thousand years ago the Crystal Desert was the Crystal Sea, so unless the ancestry was just that of growing lots of fur, said ancestor (which cannot possibly be giants... making the item collected confusing) would be aquatic. Now, on the other hand, if he's just looking for some race which is as similar as the minotaur in the Crystal Desert/northern Vabbi to the minotaur in the shiverpeaks, well that's a different story. And it is possible that Dolyaks are related to minotaur, and the other Berserkers, as they all seem to be of the Bison family (bulls, buffalos, etc.). -- Konig/talk 17:13, 16 March 2010 (UTC)
The giants could have been an alternate evolution of the ancestors of the dolyaks. --Kyoshi (Talk) User Kyoshi sig.png 19:32, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

In archaeology they dig dead things up. These giants are alive now, and were they to have eaten prehistoric yaks, the bones would be long digested (defeating the purpose of killing giants to get them) or would be laying around on the ground, or underground (defeating the purpose of killing giants to get them). --Kyoshi (Talk) User Kyoshi sig.png 01:21, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

For those interested, modern bovines (including Yaks and Cattle, Buffalo, and Bison) are most closely related to antelope. They're more distantly related to sheep. As far as Nick's concerned, I'd second the predation theory posited above; it's much more likely that early giants were predators of early GW bovids. Do we have any in-game evidence of current or past Giant diet?69.249.223.63 01:58, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
Studying the clothing of Sand Giants we can see that they are wearing some sort of hide & cloth. Also looking at their dental structure it appears that they don't have developed canines, but only 24-32 same size teeth. This may either be due to their "recent" diet or because they use their horns, arms and pretty much anything else when it comes to hunting. Now back to their clothing, when the yaks may have been around, these giants were probably chewing constantly yak hide in order to create clothes - boots included since it's known that yak hide is used for boots. To link the Crystal Sea to Yaks, from Yak hide coracle boats for fishing can be built. This might have lead to canine regression and teeth-blunting. Because now there are no yaks left (for who knows what reason) the sand giant teeth structure started to sharpen, again, probably due to diet change. With this theory I believe there's no genetic link between old dolyak-like creatures and sand giants. Markus Clouser User Markus Clouser signature img.jpg 02:11, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

The thing is, Linsey, who's the writer of the lore-based dialogues (that I know of) loves lore and would not make it contradictory or confusing - well, I'd hope for the later. March 29, 2010[edit]

Let the Hunt begin. Has anyone created an online chart showing which explorable areas have already been used? Nicholas has not appeared in the same area twice, and probably will not do so until he has visited all of them. So by eliminating which explorable areas have been visited, we can narrow down the possible areas he will appear in. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.164.184.82 (talk).

Nicholas the Traveler/Research. -- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 14:30, 29 March 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I'm aware of this chart. But it only shows where Nick has been. We also need a chart to show where he has not yet been, so that we can narrow the options of where to look. I would make one here on the wiki, but I'm a wiki noob and don't know how. I made a paper chart for myself, and by looking at it, Nicholas has visited every region at least twice EXCEPT Istan (NF) and the Far Shiverpeaks (EotN). He has only visited these regions once. So by probability, I predict he will appear in an explorable area of Istan or the Far Shiverpeaks. Similarly, he's visited some regions 5 times, such as Kaineng City, so explorable areas in this region are less probable. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.164.184.82 (talk).
You're assuming that the devs distributed his spawn points evenly between each region. The only real assumption we can make is that he only appears once per explorable area. There are 136 vanquishable explorable areas in the game, and he has 137 spawn points, so he probably spends one week in every single area, plus one other (Battledepths maybe?), regardless of how many areas each region has.
If that's the case, you're better off just picking an explorable area he hasn't been in and checking it. 68.118.250.100 15:15, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

Im wondering who hes working for. How else can a single man and Dolyak acquire such a vast stockpile of wrapped gifts if not from a higher source? And what is the real reason behind the items he collects? What secret society would call for such senseless slaughter of beasts for triflous trophy items and give out such a costly array of rewards? Hall of Monuments[edit]

My apologies if this has already been discovered. I was in the Hall of Monuments 20 minutes ago when Lieutenant Thackeray paid a visit to Gwen (little brat taking credit for all our efforts again), about needing to get some "Jacaranda seeds" (probably Sentient Seeds), for some tea to give to his men. Gwen then said she would ask Nicholas, to which Thackeray replies, "The Traveler?" Not sure if this is related to what the Traveler's after this week but hope it helps. 116.14.155.69 07:31, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

that dialogue has been around for a while, so has the follow-up dialogue where gwen has finished the tea. It's just a little storytelling to link all the lore together (gwen and nicholas knew each other since pre-searing). Certainly not a hint at future nicholas items. Tub 09:42, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
It probably is a hint to a future item but there's no indication when he might collect them if at all. -- User Kirbman sig.png Kirbman 10:32, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
Remember that the list of nicholas items has been made a year ago, while Thackeray's dialogue was added only recently. Given that nicholas' dialogues were written well in advance, but usually aren't translated until they're used, I'd assume that the list isn't readily available to most guild wars employees, so the lore writer couldn't just look it up. I wouldn't rule out that he'll ever search for Sentient Seeds, but I doubt that there's a correlation. Of course you may disagree, happy farming. ;) Tub 11:02, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
Also, the Gwen/Thackeray dialogues are a permanent part of the game, so it wouldn't make sense to add a Nicholas item related to it that only comes up once every 2.5 years. 68.118.250.100 17:20, 10 May 2010 (UTC)

Bug note[edit]

In my opinion the bug note should be removed. "Sometimes" is not really a bug, more separate instances of related bugs. After one instance is removed there is no bug, until the next time the translation is missing. But the link is useful, so maybe it should just be a note? The way it is now there is no way of telling if the bug has been fixed. 82.143.219.108 12:34, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

A bug which does occur, but cannot be easily replicated, is just an intermittent bug. It's still classed as a bug, except that the route to providing a solution is different. Unfortunately, as the userbase in GW is vast, and those who report this bug on gw wiki are predicted to not relate this to their user accounts, trying to pull any log files for why this may have occurred is near impossible (unless they manage to replicate it in-house). The use of it on the main page, with the Bug prompt, is VERY useful. Mrblackdx 15:19, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

This is going to be interested economically. Either buy 30 ales for 6k or run Kilroys quests 30 times. Considering people generally try to sell gifts for 4-5k each, will the different way to get the 6 ales contribute or weaken the standard selling price of gifts. The profit margin now will be like 2.8-3.8k instead, one reason why it might go up. However, since obtaining the ales can now be done quickly, maybe a reason for why the price of the gifts could go down. Very interesting indeed :) Mrblackdx 16:02, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

You could just... Oh, I don't know... NOT get it this week. But what am I saying, that's ludicrous! First off, Anet trying to fix a profession that was mostly broken from the beginning (It took professional skills before to use a Mesmer good, they know who they are) and making a very good attempt at it is far better than people's lack of getting 5 presents for a week. Second, ranting and cursing on the wiki is going to get you what now? Nothing. Completely and utterly nothing. Why not try spending that time gaining nothing and do something productive. And lastly, do you honestly think that the presents are worth all the effort? If your a seller, kudos to you, but there are far easier ways to make cash than to farm a ton of items when during that time you could make more money elsewhere. Are you trying to get a certain item from those presents? If so, luck to you at it, I know how hard it is to get some of the things you want from them, but again you could also just earn cash then buy it from other sellers (GWguru is quite useful for that) and probably get more than you could weekly than going to nick himself. You be Trollin? If so, does it look like the majority of the wiki readers here care? No. So sorry, but they don't.--Neithan DiniemUser Talk:Neithan Diniem 23:16, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

I farmed them at the east corner from Dzagonur Bastion to Honur Hill in The Mirror of Lyss. Firstly I tried with a Spirit Spam, but after failing multiple times, I tried an SF Build, and it worked for wonders. I used GoS, SF, SoD, GoEP, Lava Font, Fire Storm, Snow Storm, and fire attunement. So, if you're an assassin having problems with this week, you should probably give his build a shot. Death Fox 13:00, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

As a personal experiment, I timed how long it took to sell this week's item for half price. It took 5 seconds. I always enjoy when I can have a little fun with people who don't realize it would be faster to just farm the item than sitting around spamming for an hour or two. At least Roaring Ether Claws drop at least once per run, unlike Roaring Ether Hearts, or *shudders* Pillaged Goods. --Curse YouCurse You(talk|contribs) 17:23, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

Some people (like the previous poster) had trouble farming them completely solo which is understandable since 4-mob groups of these guys were perfectly capable of wiping 8-man H/H teams when NF first came out. Also the drop rate is dreadful so any team with more than one hero (or a minipet out since they steal drops and mess up aggro) is going to be at it for much longer than an hour. Those who do farm it however, have a chance at some other great drops like tons of Dust, Ruby daggers/mauls that can sometimes be pro-salvaged into a ruby, and Bronze/Copper mauls that can be pro-salvaged into 50 or more granite slabs. Selling the claws on top of that is just icing on the cake. --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 22:41, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
A Ritualist primary SoS spirit farmer is capable of killing at least one foe out of the groups of four before they get overwhelmed by AoE (mostly Energy Surge). If done skillfully, it's possible to completely kill off most of the groups by re-summoning the spirits at least once. Quite frankly, doing that isn't terribly hard and if you bring a self-heal instead of Shadowsong, you have a fair bit of room for messing up, as you can usually just run away to de-aggro. Also, I averaged 2 claws per run when I did it solo, not exactly what I'd call dreadful. --Curse YouCurse You(talk|contribs) 02:56, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

I am soloing these baddies with SOS and Pain Inverter. You need to cast all your spirits and then Pain Inverter on a Roaring Ether as soon as you aggravate them. They cast Energy Burn and die immediately. Then I just run away, wait for Pain Inverter to reload and do again. Sometimes the spirits will kill one of the Djinns but i basically ignore those. I am a Ranger so I also equip Dodge (quick getaway) and frozen Soil...the Roaring Ethers will resurrect. I get 1-2 claws a session and was able to obtain 10 claws in about 1 1/2 hours.

Makes me really glad I saved these when I was farming hearts. They were annoying enough then, now even more so with the mesmer buffs.--SunJinyu 20:02, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

That's dumb... if you let them rez and kill them again, you get another chance at loot dropping (and yes I can get pics of it happening). Also, killing 1 and running away sounds very tedious and slow. --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 21:47, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
Well, i think, he doesn't drop only one, but it happens. When I farmed these, at my first round I dropped eight(!) of them. On my second try I dropped only one, but the point is, that you should get an avarage 3 of them each run. Death Fox 13:50, 29 May 2010 (UTC)
