Mages not standing on obelisks[edit]

I did this mission a couple times recently and I'm not sure if it's a bug or I'm doing something wrong, but the mages don't stand on the obelisks anymore. If you try to talk to them they say "I'll wait here," but they follow you instead. If you don't talk to them they still follow you. I seem to recall a long time ago that they would stand and hold position on the obelisks. Tedium 20:34, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Yea, I experienced the same about a month ago. I'm almost sure they stood at the obelisks before - anja talk 20:40, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
Yea I think that happened to me too. I'm positive they use to stand on the obelisks. Is it a glitch? --Primeval 21:18, 17 August 2007 (UTC)
Similar thing happened to me too, yesterday, but the next minute, I lagged out :P Ace 14:16, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
I've never been able to get that to work. Obelisks do nothing that I can see, the FSMs get slaughtered every time, and the Charr get close enough that I can watch them attacking me and my teammates while Rurik is lecturing us in the cinematic. I just don't see the point. This is one of the longest, most annoying and boring missions in the entire game. I'd just as soon skip it. The only purpose it serves is to advance the story, but the skimpy rewards and drops don't justify the time expenditure. If there was any hope of completing the bonus, it might be worth considering. But I doubt it. 71.200.140.35 07:37, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Mages walk through gate[edit]

I missed the lever that lets Rurik into the area and spent ages looking for it xD. The mages that you find just after that actually walk straight through the closed door anyway without Rurik there and go ahead and stand on the obelisks (which do nothing anyway ^^) This is easier though because nothing triggers and all the char just sitting around wondering why arenanet made ths mission so long :P. (Also the "Impossible army" is actually really quite killable and is funny afterwards cos Rurik soils himself over nohting,) but this is mainly helpful with the bonus cos Rurik doesnt trigger the Ember Carriers ^^ --Winglash 22:15, 23 July 2010 (UTC)

Bonus dies...[edit]

I've done this mission and bonus dozens of times. Today I noticed the bonus chick get slaughtered by the charr boss guarding her. Even while sprinting, there was no possible way to stop her execution. Anyone else experience this "bug?"

Same experience here. Should I add it as a bug/note? 84.86.230.252 03:50, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

This mission does have a tough bonus, bugged everywhere, this time the flame got stuck even before the tar pit, and it's my third time trying...

I've tried this too many times. Always something goes wrong, disconnects, AI fails, bonus guy gets killed, charrs get stucked. Something always goes wrong with this mission :/. Anet, please fix. Limu Tolkki (Limu Tolkki - talk) 15:38, 13 February 2008 (UTC)

Ditto. I've tried six times in the last two days, and the same things always go wrong. (1) Boss kills contact before you can get to her, (2) outlandishly huge aggro range cause the Charr to attack you before they get anywhere near the gate, (3) Charr aggro Rurik and/or Erol, who then kill the Charr or die in the attempt, (4) flame gets lost somewhere and Charr aggro you as soon as they reach the gate. I'm sure this can't be possible with henchmen due to the poor AI, and I'm not sure it's any less impossible with an all human party since there isn't anyway to prevent the flame getting lost, or control how close the Charr get to Rurik/Erol, or to follow the Charr closely enough to get to the gate w/o aggroing the three guards near the gate or aggroing the flame carriers before they've opened the gate. Including the six recent tries, I've done this 11 times and never succeeded completing the bonus mission. Never trying again. ArenaNet, you might as well remove the mission from the game. 71.200.140.35 07:25, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
On the other hand, I've done this mission + bonus lots of times (at least 5 or 6) and never had any problem. All I can say is that you're unlucky. Astralphoenix777~

Redirect[edit]

I am redirecting Ruins of Surmia (explorable area) here because this mission has no explorable area. Shard 05:46, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Far East Gate[edit]

There is a gate to the east of Breena Stavinson. Just behind the spawing point of the bearers. There is usually a devourer boss behind it. How do you open it to kill it and explore that area? The preceding unsigned comment was added by 88.104.105.234 (talk • contribs) at 15:30, 30 May 2008 (UTC).

afaik you can't. i can remember that i once read in the old wiki that the devourer bosses have an unreachable spawn location behind some gate... —ZerphatalkThe Improver 15:33, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
Doesn't the gate open when the Ember Bearers come through? Paddymew 14:48, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
That gate does not open, just the one the Ember Bearers came through. MystiLefemEle 10:46, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
Has anyone tried shadow stepping or necrotic traversal or something to get behind that gate?
That boss is usually out of any weapon range for necrotic transversal.MystiLefemEle 08:28, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Are you JOKING me?[edit]

At the moment, i'm trying to control my rage over the bonus in this mission. I've babysat Rurik through this boring, gut wrenchingly long mission for the third time, and "The Flame" has gotten CAUGHT on the tar pit wall every single time. Once the charr get to the fence, you CANNOT pull them to initiate movement in "The Flame", and so your bonus completion is EFFED. Please, PLEASE, ArenaNet, can you please do something about this? I've just wasted two hours trying to through this bonus as fast as possible, yawning all the while as my party's health rests at about 100%, only to be undone by a TECHNICAL ERROR!

Please, for the love of god, fix this! UserAegisEdesiaSig.JPG Aegis 19:22, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

indeed... still very bugged. Can't pull the guys back to the flame thingy... and the Flame comes "lollipin'" over the path... until the tar... User Kyle van der Meer Sig Pic.pngKyle van der Meer 13:06, 5 November 2008 (UTC)

I absoluteley hate this mission, even in Normal Mode. However, i cannot believe people are having this much problem with it. Ive done this mission probably over 20-30 times for various reasons and maybe 1-2 times i recall having had the flame get stuck. Ive never had rurik agro the ember bearers and have never done it 3-6times in a row and not got the bonus...The worst part of this mission? Its so rediculously long for a starter mission with bonus 3/4 of the way in. So if something goes wrong you are redoing the meaningless 3/4 all over again.--Justice 02:24, 18 June 2009 (UTC)

I think this is the longest mission in the game in terms of time taken, and it is full of boring pointless rubbish. Not ANet's finest hour, this one... Astralphoenix777 23:19, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Boss Name Differnt[edit]

The boss at which I collected the Bonus was not the name it stated, so I think we should just change it and state that you find a Charr Boss. Anybody else? Than 22:47, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Yeah its random. I recall facing a fire ele boss there and a necro too. Not sure if there is a way that u can direct to a page that lists what bosses appear in the mission. Smarter way would be to somehow relink to the same page only the charr boss section. Justice 23:47, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

Funny, every time I've done this mission it's been Scaar Sternclaw. Never anyone else. If it's not fixed he certainly has a high % chance of spawning there. Astralphoenix777 23:21, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Knock[edit]

Does Rurik still use it? I've finished this mission in HM and he didn't use it. --MageUser MageMontu sig.pngMontu 09:59, 9 September 2009 (UTC)

He used it when I did it yesterday in HM 83.248.186.171 17:06, 23 January 2010 (UTC)
it is used but after the boss group dies the mission auto completes--Nataliexxx 03:09, 15 July 2010 (UTC)
Actually the "mission auto completes" when either the boss or the 2 Charr warriors in the boss group dies; i.e. you kill the 2 Charr warriors and the mission ends without having to kill the boss and vice versa. For some reason, you don't need to kill the entire boss group. --Silver Edge 07:40, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

Unfucking real[edit]

Did bonus, even cleared path and area around the oblesks before droping bridge for rurik. a patrol split from the huge mob in the middle and blocked the path infront of us to the mages, so i engaged them. Rurik and Erol had other plans and attacked the middle mob while i was in another fight and ends up dieing. Since when does rurik attack the middle? Justice 20:40, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

I just had the exact same thing happen. I spent like 2 hours in there getting the (bugged) bonus, then we cleared out everything, went back to get Rurik, and after saying we can't win the fight with the mob in the center, he engages them after a group breaks off! Why have none of these bugs been fixed or even addressed? --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:Tender Wolf (talk).
I know why he will aggro middle now. When you clear ahead, Erol and Rurik take a straight shot to the mages. Theres a hill on the path that forks it, causing them to walk very close to the middle charr. If you do the mission the "normal" way, they end up following the outside path because of charr they engage. I had cleared ahead and was freaking when erol (a good 15secs ahead of rurik btw)and then rurik took the inside path, but neither aggroed the middle thankfully. Another note, the mages were already free once i,rurik and erol arrived and had already claimed obleisks. Justice 05:22, 2 May 2010 (UTC)
This is exactly what happened to me, including Erol sprinting ahead while Rurik was still blabbing about something and the mages letting themselves loose. Well, except that I was a bit bloodthirsty (it being HM and all) and cleared *everything* before lowering the gate :3 Got several gold drops for my trouble. 70.116.8.14 06:45, 1 September 2011 (UTC)
Happened to me few minutes ago. Now I'm glad he dies later on.. and I will do it with wild pleasure during final mission.
Says he got another route.
Still goes through the middle.
Scumbag Rurik. --Osael 23:18, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
Unfreaking real. 2013 and its so long since I've done this I thought "theres no way Rurik could aggro those" -_- 47 mins later. -Chieftain Alex 21:01, 18 April 2013 (UTC)
Yeah he still does, the silly goose. Why I take more time and clear out the groups fo charr, then listen to him babble on about the charr that are no where to be seen ;)>MystiLefemEle 08:32, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Bugs[edit]

There are like 5 bugs on this mission, why haven't they been fixed? It's bad enough there are level 23+ monsters in a 4-person party in HM, but we have to do it over and over because of the bugs too. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:Tender Wolf (talk).

Anet doesn't care about PvE, apparently. This adds pretty bad first impressions to the game IMO. However, I will forgive them... Once they release GW2. 114.77.108.48 07:42, 9 September 2010 (UTC)
Did anyone submit a bug report to them? They won't know unless some one brings it to their attention. (Yes, I have just sent one in.)58.170.55.216 11:54, 18 January 2011 (UTC)
I'm going to cry, haven't done this mission in years, just doing it now in HM trying to finish a book and Rurik get's stuck on a chest right outside the end of the mission.... what a waste of 46 minutes. FIX THE BUGS!!!!!!!!!!! Dervish-tango-icon-20.pngDevi Talk 15:27, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
I feel your pain :( First time I ever did that mission, he got stuck at the end. Sucks so much! 70.116.8.14 06:48, 1 September 2011 (UTC)

ez bonus?[edit]

didnt see it noted, but the flame keepers that you kill for bonus can be pulled individually. A spirit spammer with pain inverter can easily take them 1 by 1, or you can pull them back to the groupAurenXneruA 18:52, 29 December 2010 (UTC)

Incorrect Walkthrough[edit]

Walkthrough says: "For the first part of the mission you need to follow Rurik." That is incorrect as Rurik follows me. Nothing happens, if I try to follow Rurik. 188.238.70.201 14:09, 16 September 2011 (UTC)

Anomaly[edit]

This edit removed the anomaly note, {{anomaly|During the final cinematic, Prince Rurik and Erol will leave the mouthpiece on the stand.}}. I think that should be included as an anomaly because the typical player would expect the mouthpiece to be removed — no one should be expected to understand the programming reasons behind ANet's choice to make it appear as if it is left alone.

Perhaps the note belongs on the cinematic page (but isn't it much more likely that people would look here for a note rather than drill down to the cutscene article?). – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 19:46, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

1) It's not an anomaly. An anomaly is an unexpected but intended behavior but this behavior is expected (only those who don't know how the game works would find it unexpected, and that can go for anything in the game - we can't mark the entire wiki an anomaly). If it is retained, it should be a normal note, not an anomaly. However, I fail to see the relevance to this particular page when we have a page dedicated to the cinematic, which the note is solely about. Konig/talk 19:50, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
"...an anomaly describes a situation in which one element of the game behaves inconsistently with other, similar elements, but it is not clear which behavior (if either) was intended. " Bug
By this wiki's definition, an anomaly is unexpected or inconsistent behavior; unlike a bug, it has nothing at all to do with developer intent. In this case, the graphics is both inconsistent with the story/dialogue and (therefore) unexpected by any player unfamiliar with programming.
I prefer that the note be on this article and the cinematic's page, since the video is anomalous with the storyline of the mission. But it should at least appear there. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 19:58, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
This is expected, and it's not inconsistent (it's not an item drop so it's not picked up, there is literally no cinematic where a figure picks something up, especially in Prophecies - but do feel free to prove me wrong; the closest I can recall is off-screen pick ups or hand-offs). It's inconsistent with the story, but not with mechanics. Therefore, because it is not inconsistent on a mechanical scale, it is not an anomaly. It is an oddity however, but again, this is something for the cinematic page imo. Konig/talk 20:16, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Exploration[edit]

The article makes reference to a hard to get to area in the Northern tar pits. I'm trying to map it, how do I do so? --Saberhagen User Saberhagen Wiki Sig5.png(My Talk) 17:19, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

I got it, there's a path that I had missed that took me straight to it. --Saberhagen User Saberhagen Wiki Sig5.png(My Talk) 18:39, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

I updated the "Notes" section to expand on how to explore the Northwest portion of the map. Cyryl Chevalier (talk) 20:26, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

Was just going through this long boring mission to map the North West corner for Carto and managed a neat trick. At the point where Rurik and Errol wait for you to go around to get to the Lever to drop the gate, I managed to save a bit of time by hitting the Charr across the bridge with Spirit Rift. Once one of them were dead, Necrotic Traversal to the corpse to then hit the lever. Voila! Time saved. 121.214.165.91 02:18, 22 March 2012 (UTC) Gilly
