Talk:Thackeray's scavenger hunt

The article doesn't give a clear answer... do you have to obtain the full 4 parcels and 12 sacks to progress the storyline to Dialogue 7? 68.118.250.100 04:35, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

If so, I suspect I and thousands of other players are out of luck, due to not having Hard Apple Cider on hand, and there stupidly being no way to obtain them until November, unless they see fit to add a collector somewhere... Arshay Duskbrow 04:38, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
You only need the four parcels to trigger the dialogue in the HoM where Gwen says no to the picnic, and thus to the one with Evennia. No need for any sacks. -- Konig/talk 04:44, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, and unfortunately you need Cider for that... Arshay Duskbrow 05:05, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
And birthday cupcakes. -- Konig/talk 05:14, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
True, but the difference is we just had a whole week of those dropping. (Although I personally already had a stack lying around, since I never use consumables...) Arshay Duskbrow 05:23, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
Well, I just got him to appear in the Hall with the rose for the final talk with Gwen and I did NOT give him ALL the parcel items the article says, specifically the Hard Apple Cider. It seems as long as you give him one of each of the items (or one set of 6 for the candles) it'll finish. Sure, you'll miss out on rewards, but no need to delay seeing all the events.
If anyone cares, the items I gave were: 1 Birthday Cupcake, 1 drake kabob, 3 red bean cakes, 3 rice wines, 18 candles. -Yossitaru 05:50, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
For what it's worth, I didn't have a hard time getting my hands on the cider: I just went to an American district of Lion's Arch and offered to pay 150g or two bottles of Dwarven ale for a single bottle of cider. I found a seller within seconds. I'm sure it was partly luck, but I also suspect there are many people still holding on to cider they were planning on selling or drinking eventually. --Mme. Donelle 05:56, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Seems Yossitaru is correct. I just got the dialogue without giving the Cider. I gave 1 Drake Kabob, 3 chunks of drake flesh, 3 hunters ales, 1 birthday cupcake, 3 pumpkin cookies, and 4 sets of candles. Note that I couldn't get the dialogue to trigger until I got the "I still have to get the girl." answer from him when asked what else he could need. I guess as long as you've given at least three "sack" items of each kind, that might be good enough, but I don't know...the drake kabob might be essential at least. More research is needed, but at least we know that you don't have to have everything. Arshay Duskbrow 06:23, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Ah, I think I get it: You just need to give him 4 items: 1 meal, 1 set of candles, 1 sweet, and 1 ale. Doesn't matter if it is a parcel or not. Though it would be better to get the parcels. :p -- Konig/talk 06:52, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
Just gave him 4 items: 1 drake kabob, redbean cake, candles`and rice wine. But he's not statisfied yet :( --My ContributionsMann 11:36, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
You now have to take all sweets and drinks out of your inventory.--Neil2250 , Render Lord User Neil2250 sig icon6.png 11:38, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
just needed to give him some more stuff, another redbean and a hunter ale --Mann 11:39, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
Hm, it might be that you need to give one of each of the parcel items OR 3 of each of the sack items, so the absolute bare minimum in terms of difficulty could be 1 drake kabob or 3 of a lesser food (I'm not sure which is easier), 3 red bean cakes, 3 rice wines and 6 candles. -Yossitaru 17:56, 15 May 2010 (UTC)
SOmething's not correct, i gave him all the for perfect items. But before the cider I gave him hunters ale, and he still asks for more sweets and more to eat, while i gave him drake kabob and a birthday cupcake and a pie slice after that. So i think you need three of each type (excluding candles maybe) 3 food items 3 drinks 3 sweets + candles.(Frizz 21:09, 23 May 2010 (UTC))
He'll ask for the stuff until he takes 4 of each. But you only need 1 of each (doesn't even need to be the perfect items, though you get better stuff for them). -- Konig/talk 21:23, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
If you give him 1 of each inferior item it does not work. The bit concerning that in notes is misleading (he needs all perfect or at least more than 1 of each imperfect). I'm going to pull it. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.165.132.102 (talk) at 21:33, 24 May 2010 (UTC).
Confirmed, I just completed the Scavenger quest, and if you give him an 'inferior' (non perfect) item, he will require 3 of it for that item to count has done.62.195.157.175 21:05, 24 May 2010 (UTC)

Where Did He Go? I completed the scavanger hunt, watched him to go Lions Arch, then back to the Shining Blade camp (where he wont talk to me), how can I get the Random Junk or where? --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 72.70.199.218 (talk) at 00:48, 26 May 2010 (UTC).

His garden...[edit]

Where's his secret garden located? Anyone know? Taka Ragranok 23:37, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

It's not in-game. It might pop up with all this GW:Beyond stuff, but that's just speculation. - Mini Me talk 23:51, 31 July 2010
Very well. Thank you, sir! Taka Ragranok 00:20, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
I believe this garden will be the start of Ebonhawke. There is currently no information that confirms this, however. --MushaUser Musha Sigc.png 15:40, 2 August 2010 (UTC)
Ebonhawke is located in the Blazeridge Mountains, which seems a wee bit far for a secret garden. - Mini Me talk 18:40, 2 August 2010
His garden is to the NW of the EOTN outpost, where the red iris flowers and Jingle Pets are. *Malganis Frostmourn* 99.48.31.204 05:28, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
Actually, that would be Gwen's garden. The first time you take her there, she talks about how she maintains it. Keiran's isn't in the game, and it's somewhere on the way to the Charr Homelands. By the sounds of it, it's a hanging garden too. -- Konig/talk 05:47, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

Unavailable after Battle for LA?[edit]

Before Hearts of the North, you could still participate in the scavenger hunt even after you watched the scene after Battle for Lion's Arch. But it appears he's no longer available. It makes sense with the story line, but now I finally have Hard Apple Cider for him... --Thervold 00:56, 25 November 2010 (UTC)

Yep me too. Hopefully I'll be able to give him stuf after hearts of the north 68.230.145.119 16:47, 26 November 2010 (UTC)joe

I hope they bring him back. I mean I never got to get any Paper Wrapped Parcels due to this. Previously Unsigned 15:02, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

If the party leader has access to the scavenger hunt so do all the other party members, so you can still complete it with help. 82.143.219.87 02:31, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

Other items[edit]

Apparently, unappetizing food also works as a substitute for exotic dishes. Try various types of eyes and alternatives, e.g. Kraken Eyes and Stolen Provisions.  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 03:08, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

I think when it first came out, every trophy was used. I know I went with every trophy I had, which is probably 1/3 of them. Outside trophy, I think the typically food items were also brought to him, and were either recorded as a dialogue of not accepting or not triggered. Stolen Provisions I know gave a dialogue for not accepting. Here is just one location. I wonder why Keiran's "no" dialogues are not recorded on his page. -- Konig/talk 04:06, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
My friend took the eyes and stolen provisions long afterward. Did anyone test after HotN came out? It wouldn't be surprising if they added some stuff to make things easier (or if something was missed or misrecorded).
FWIW: I don't think any of these accept/reject dialogues should be recorded in a main article. I think we should do something similar as we do for Nick Traveler — record on a sub-page, so this stuff doesn't clutter up the main article. (Since there hundreds and hundreds of trophies, consumables, salvage items, and other associated things that might generate a response).  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 05:40, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
Well not every trophy and such gets accepted. Not even things that may seem like something to be accepted were accepted - and by accepted I mean giving dialogue. But I don't think anything changed (at least, as part of the Test Krewe, I haven't heard of such when Stumme had us test the changes to WiK). -- Konig/talk 05:59, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
Ah, I had wondered why you seemed to have hard info on upcoming changes; test team explains that. (Cool — gz and condolences ;-)
My main point is that I don't think we have documented everything that Thack might count as sufficient. Ok, I buy that nothing has changed (as far as dialogue) since the original picnic. But it seems to me that (a) not everything was checked for dialogue; (b) even if there was no dialogue, doesn't mean that an item wouldn't count to progress the quest (we know that ANet has sometimes missed dialogue). I will probably have another toon go through soon and I'll try to do some more checking.
Thanks for the extra info.  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 06:34, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
"you seemed to have hard info" You know that one researcher-like guy in just about every psychological anime that somehow manages to find all these scattered clues and piece them together so that they make perfect sense and turns out to be right while said guy only believes its a theory? Well I'm not that guy. :P
I'm not saying we have documented everything. But there would be few left. There used to be a list of the reject dialogue, but I cannot find it. Someone must of removed it from the collector pages because it wasn't placed right and have not put it up elsewhere, in its appropriate spot. So we'll have to dig through various history pages, like Lieutenant Thackeray, Sack of Random Junk, the 2 collector subpages, etc.
Regarding m issed dialogue: No. If it registered to him, then there was dialogue - whether he rejected it or accepted it. I think we got all the accepted dialogue, but maybe not all the rejected dialogue, which is coupled with like items (all seed items are the same reject dialogue, all root items are the same reject dialogue, both heket tongue and the EN frog tongue are the same, etc.)
Before you go and collect every single food or drink item out there, check out the histories and talk pages/archives of all related articles. Might save you a lot of trouble. -- Konig/talk 13:18, 10 January 2011 (UTC)
"Well I'm not that guy." Yeah, just a reasonable facsimile thereof ;-)
Re: potentially missing items: jeeze, might actually be easier to collect the 1000 potential items than collating old histories ;-) I had figured that like-items would have identical responses from Thack (tongues, seeds, eyes, roots, etc). Still, I'm from Missouri (the Show Me State) when it comes to such things; I like to see evidence (including field reports from other players) before I'm ready to trust. (I can't tell you how many times a developer proved to me that something was user error after which subsequent testing showed it was a bug (or often: a misunderstood use-case).)
Anyhow, starting with talk pages sounds sensible. Thanks for the background.  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 17:17, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

Is there anyone that actually believes its necessary? --BriarUser Briar Sig 3.jpgThe Spider 07:18, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

I support renaming this one (regardless of the results of the discussion above); I don't think this unofficial name has reached anything close to proper name status (I've seen more people use other terms/phrases to refer to this required activity that lacks any official designation).  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 20:48, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Agreed. While others are debatable, this is simply one of Thackeray's scavenger hunts (the other being Norn Catering). G R E E N E R 20:54, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Does this page actually need to exist anymore? It was set up as kind of a place-holder page, much like the old Gwen and Thackeray dialogues page. But now since there is a quest for this... Shouldn't all this be placed on the respective quest page? --MushaUser Musha Sigc.png 21:28, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
I think it does, Musha, because the "quest" that this is a part of (it's not a quest in of itself) is the over-arching quest which includes having to do prior things as well. It would be like merging all of the WiK encounters and dialogues into The War in Kryta, or merging Trial of Zinn into Asuran Allies. -- Konig/talk 21:51, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
Oh, that's right. I forgot it was part of an overarc. --MushaUser Musha Sigc.png 03:01, 9 February 2011 (UTC)

True?[edit]

The article states that the quest is part of WiK ("Thackeray's Scavenger Hunt is the unofficial name for The War in Kryta quest to"...) nut isn't it part of Hearts of the North? Jackster 17:45, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

To complete eotn, you have to setup the picnic. On the other hand, it's clearly part of the storyline leading up to Hearts of the North. So, mechanics: WiK; story: HotN.  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 18:49, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
It's part of both. To do WiK, you need to do some of HotN, and as such it's part of the overarc quest to the WiK. It's not an "unofficial name for The War in Kryta quest" but the unofficial name to part of that quest (specifically Ebon Vanguard Allies) and is part of both the WiK and HotN. The two stories are intermingled. -- Konig/talk 21:29, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Dialogue isn't triggering...[edit]

Dialogue doesn't trigger....

After gathering the last item, speak to Thackeray one last time to hear him say that there is one last component: "The hardest part. I still need to get the girl." Then, return to the HoM so he can speak to Gwen again, completing this task.

This dialogue doesn't trigger for me. He isn't asking for more items; I have given everything he needs.

Help. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 206.116.192.144 (talk) at 08:21, 19 March 2011 (UTC).

You might have to give him more of one type of item. The easiest way to know is to count how many paper-wrapped parcels you got and how many bags of junk. What choices does he have when you speak to him now?  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 08:47, 19 March 2011 (UTC)

I'm stuck[edit]

Gave him 4 dwarven ales, 3 bowls of skalefin soup, 4 red bean cakes, and 6 votive candles. He still acts like I haven't given him anything. What gives? --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 66.72.237.90 (talk) at 06:28, 20 April 2011 (UTC).

I'm stuck as well. Definitely given him more than is required (waited until this weekend to get a cupcake, and the only imperfect left is the Hard Apple Cider, but I've given him 3 rice wine) - he won't even ask for anything more of any type. But I can't get the "hardest part" dialogue. Does it perhaps have anything to do with progress in the War in Kryta? (Currently, I'm in the middle of killing the Mursaat to "raise the hope of the people") If not, it may just be a bug that needs reporting. Naturefreak2101 17:32, 30 April 2011 (UTC)
It doesn't depend on WiK progress. You gave him candles? food? sweets? and drink? (3 of each imperfect and/or 1 of each perfect?) If not, can you take a screen of the dialogue options he does give you? I haven't seen any confirmed bugs stopping progress, but, if that's the case, support can probably help.  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 19:25, 30 April 2011 (UTC)
Got it to work. Gave him two more Hunter's Ales. What's funny is that he wouldn't accept Bottles of Rice Wine. I couldn't even offer them. Either way, I finally got the "girl" dialogue. Whew! Thanks! Naturefreak2101 00:09, 3 May 2011 (UTC)
I also have difficulty completing this quest. I gave him everything he wanted some time by giving more than necessary (a primary object and several substituents). Despite the fact that I gave him everything, the quest does not update. Tackeray still does not come to the HoM to continue the story. Here the only possible dialogue with him : [1] (sorry for my English btw)--66.131.196.198 01:10, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
Choose the option, Let's speed this up. What exactly do you want? If you cannot progress still, please post the equivalent image for that decision tree. And good luck: I hope that resolves the issue for you.  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 01:19, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
Try talking to him with the necessary items in your inventory. It's possible that some didn't take - see if you can give him anything else. I had that problem with the alcohol requirement. If you can still give him things, finishing will hopefully fix your problem. Naturefreak2101 01:25, 4 May 2011 (UTC)
One of my ally members is also stuck. Thackeray won't take anything, but he refuse to say the line "almost...". Anyone got an idea how to fix this? 145.94.73.171 21:42, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

Perfect vs suitable[edit]

  • Beginning on November 18, 2010, the scavenger hunt became a required component of the The War in Kryta. If a character completed the Battle for Lion's Arch before starting the scavenger hunt, the only way to participate is to join another party that includes an eligible player.
    • Before that time, you needed to contribute all 4 perfect items to the picnic.
For three of the request types, you must offer a minimum of a single perfect item or three suitable items...

This article has included the text above (or something similar) for nearly a year. we did this after several people confirmed that ANet changed things so that you were not required to submit four perfect items, but could use substitutes (except for candles, which has no substitute).

I haven't tried to get away without submitting perfect items, but the quest does update if I deliver 3 suitables beforehand, which is consistent with perfects being optional. I suggested to people without perfects that they use the substitutes and that apparently worked for them, but I confess I didn't specifically ask them if they ended up needing to use perfects anyhow. (And these days, I keep enough perfects to hand out to people anyhow.)

So, have we been wrong for a year? Did things change recently? Or is something else going on that some people aren't getting to finish the quest using substitutes. Regardless of which, this should probably be confirmed at the official forums: if perfects are really required, I plan to suggest that suitables be allowed (it seems unfair to force people to buy cider if they don't play during thanksgiving); if perfects aren't required...but some people cannot finish, ANet really ought to know so they can fix it. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 08:55, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

User:Pyron Sy confirmed that he was able to complete the hunt using suitables. I think, therefore, that the burden of proof is on anyone who claims that suitables do not work. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 21:01, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

Thackeray stuck on "something sweet"[edit]

I've given him enough suitable items for food and drink, and i've given him a pumpkin cookie and two rice bean cakes for sweets. When I talk to him with two rice bean cakes and a creme brulee in my inventory, they don't seem to come up as options for items to give him. Only items that he won't accept appear on the list. i've tried talking to him with JUST the acceptable sweets, but it's been no use. any advice?--Jabu 22:01, 6 November 2011 (UTC)

It sounds like he just doesn't want anymore; you've completed the objective. Just move on to the next item. --MushaUser Musha Sigc.png 00:16, 7 November 2011 (UTC)
Once you have given Nick 3 suitables of a type, he won't offer dialogue on that type unless you bring a perfect item. As Musha notes, you have completed the objective. Similarly, if you give him a perfect, he won't offer dialogue for the equivalent suitable unless you have 1–3 in inventory and once you have given 1+3, he won't offer anymore dialogue on that type. – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 15:44, 7 November 2011 (UTC)

Drake Kabob[edit]

It says that the skale fin soup or the salad is the easiest, but I found the drop rate on both to be very low. I killed tons of skale in Issnur Isles and got one fin (lots of claws, though). I then switched and went on an Iboga farm and only got one petal. And you need 6 of either of these. Then went down to Mehtani Keys and use this farm for Drake Flesh. I got a drop on the first group. Of course, YMMV, but the person listing that farm claims 1-2 per run, and since you only need 1 of these for the Drake Kabob, it seems like a better way to go. --Dfscott 03:30, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, drake flesh has a pretty decent drop rate - Drakes on a plain quest got me 3 chunks in the first two mobs. File:User Chieftain Alex Chieftain Signature.jpg Chieftain Alex 09:14, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
Must just be me that thinks that Drake Flesh has a really poopy drop rate. Maybe they changed the drop rate to make it a bit more common than hen's teeth? --snogratUser Snograt signature.png 10:32, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

So[edit]

Was stuck, gave every other perfect item except alcohol. Proceeded to give Dwarven Ale, 1 Rice Wine and maybe 3 Hunter's Ale. Got forward. --DANDY ^_^ -- 21:25, 10 August 2015 (UTC)
