[edit] Mission information

[edit] Objectives

Open the Frost Gate.

  • Destroy the ballistae to secure safe passage for Prince Rurik and the Ascalon refugees.
  • Retrieve the Gear Lever from the Dwarven fort to open the Frost Gate.
  • ADDED: Use the Gear Lever on the Lever Mechanism to reach the Frost Gate.
  • *BONUS* Steal the Stone Summit's secret plans for a powerful siege weapon.
  • ADDED: Activate the three Frost Gate Lever Mechanisms before the Stone Summit overwhelms Rurik.

[edit] Walkthrough

Follow the pass in a general southerly direction while searching for the ballistae. Both can be found somewhat west of the normal pass. Kill the Stone Summit Engineers next to them. Continue on, following the red path on the map. After destroying all four ballistae, a gate will open and your party can head down a hill to pick up the gear lever. Use it on the nearby gear mechanism to open the gate just beyond. The mechanism will cause the lever to drop after several seconds. Pick it back up and wait patiently for the gate to open.

Next, enter the area behind the gate. From here you can see two of the three additional mechanisms needed to be triggered by the lever. The third one is below and in front of the other two. Using the gear lever on any of the three mechanisms causes a nearby gate to open, allowing additional enemies to spill out and attack your party. It is recommended to completely clear the area of foes before activating any of these gates, thus lessening the impact of the extra enemies. Shortly after having used the gear lever on the third mechanism, the final cutscene is shown, ending the mission.

[edit] Bonus

To finish the bonus:

  • You need to free Rornak Stonesledge at point (1)
  • Lead him to the ballistae at point (2)
  • Use the ballistae to blast open the door that leads to point (3)
  • Obtain the secret plans from a chest at point (3) and deliver them back to Rornak at the ballistae

Since Rornak must survive to complete the bonus, consider first clearing the path to point (2) before leading him there. Point (2) houses 2 groups of 2 Dolyak Riders and several Stone Summit. Luring some of these foes away from the Riders and their considerable healing potential may prove a worthy tactic. Be cautious in your attempts to lure the enemies, especially in hard mode or with henchmen, as the Dolyak healers will follow as soon as you attack any member of the group. Consider spreading the enemy lines to accomplish this task with the use of bodyblocking on the road nearby the start of the yellow line that leads to point (2) on the map. With the party correctly positioned, pull the enemies into your waiting ambush and crush them with impunity. The proper application of enchantment removal should prove invaluable in this encounter by stripping the Dolyak Riders of their Mark of Protection spell.

Another difficult fight with a random Stone Summit boss awaits the party just beyond the place where the path to (3) departs from the usual mission route. Another Dolyak Rider in the group presents an ample challenge in Hard Mode; however, be aware that killing the boss will trigger a cutscene, moving the party forward (whether or not the entire group has been destroyed). Although it is still possible to complete the bonus after the cutscene by backtracking, it is advisable to leave this group until the bonus is done.

[edit] Alternative End Strategy

In Hard Mode most groups will find the end part overwhelming. An alternative strategy to doing this is to first clear the groups marked in area 1, trigger the lever at 2 defeat the group that will run in into the lever area, trigger the lever at 3, again kill the group that rushes in. Then finally trigger the leaver at 4 and wait for cut scene

[edit] Notes

  • Interactive objects
  • A Gear Lever bundle can be found near the first Lever Mechanism, and must be held in order to use them.
  • If Rurik dies before all 3 Lever Mechanisms have been activated, the mission continues as normal.
  • If you walk to the end of the path that also leads to the Frost Gate, you will face a single Stone Summit Crusher. Killing it will spawn two additional Crushers. Killing foes in this area will spawn new groups slowly growing in power and number (later even Ice Golems will show up). If well-prepared, this makes up for a good occasion to farm stone summit-related items, XP, gold, and warrior/elementalist tomes (Hard Mode). After killing a large number of Stone Summit Crushers and Ice Golems, they will stop spawning.
  • A Ranger with Broad Head Arrow will make this mission a lot easier in Hard Mode.
  • Without Necromancer skills in your group, complete exploration of the mission area will yield approximately 1.4% to the Cartographer title.
    • If you are working on the Tyrian Cartographer title, bring Necrotic Traversal and run through the Minotaurs in the beginning. Kill the groups around the first bridge except the Ice Golem on the other side of the bridge and let him target the group standing around Prince Rurik. With some patience, the ice golem kills someone of the group and you can teleport next to Rurik. There are three Ascalon Soldiers who can be used for traversing. If soloing, it is advisable to send the heroes first, since the golem may have to be lured closer to be able to reach the remaining soldiers.
  • Non-Prophecies characters will not receive any reward for completing this mission on normal mode.
Anomaly Anomaly.
The Minotaur boss may be easy to miss since he is one of the few bosses within the game which have a generic name instead of a pre-disclosed one.
