Reward[edit]

Walkthrough[edit]

Start from Senji's Corner and exit to Xaquang Skyway to talk to Xan Hei who is a few steps from the town. He will transport you to a small area in The Marketplace where you must talk to the people in order to further the quest.

There are two parts to the quest. The first requires that you obtain intel about the Chalice by questioning the locals; you succeed by getting three good or three bad responses. Fortunately, there are five NPCs, so you will inevitably get three responses of the same type no matter how they respond.

Unfortunately, as soon as you accomplish this task, Fah Yu the Shadow's Eye and a couple of Am Fah mobs spawn and rush toward the center of The Marketplace area (the red platform in the middle). Initially there are two mobs from each direction, then after they are dead there is another group from each side. As long as you are spread out when this happens, you should not expect too much trouble, since these foes are not any tougher than the ones you have seen so far. After killing Fah Yu and company, listen to the brief dialogue, then return to Xan Hei to claim your reward.

Since the area is small, certain skills are especially effective: those with AoE damage or protection, Shouts, Wards, and Wells. To prevent getting wiped by the Am Fah's Chaos Storms, replace any wands or staves with martial weapons (preferably spears for heroes, so that they do not follow foes into melee range).

Hard Mode

In hard mode, the typical strategy is to park the party in the northwest corner, near Kaineng Docks exit, where enemies are least likely to go towards. Having a bonder hero eases the difficulty in this quest. Am Fah that spawn out of the Bukdek Byway exit will head west along the north side, and are easy to aggro from the Kaineng Docks exit; meanwhile the enemies from Wajjun Bazaar exit will head east to the spawn point and can be pulled later by players at their leisure. It is best to leave Kun Yao last to talk to be in position without aggroing a Wajjun group.

Good and bad responses[edit]

To get the desired response, choose the listed dialogue as it becomes available during your conversations:

NPC Good response Bad response
Chi "I know exactly what a lady like you is interested in. (Pay 50 gold.)" "Those Am Fah must not know true beauty when they see it! I'm nothing like them..."
Chou Chu "You know *they* are working with the Am Fah. Plotting against you. If you tell me what you know, the voices will stop." "Tell me what you know or I will drown you in whatever invisible slime you are standing in!"
Kun Yao
  • "I'm good for it, if you've got what I want."
  • "There's no risk to you; the Am Fah will have to deal with me, and that will be the end of them."
  • "Tell me what you know of the Am Fah or I'll throw you...um, far!" or "I'm good for it, if you've got what I want."
  • "I can offer you a punch in the face. It's obviously what you need!"
Nails
  • "I'm after something very specific. Maybe you can help me find it."
  • "Yeah, I'm looking for a fight. But it's with the Am Fah, not you."
  • "The Am Fah. Tell me what you know about them now, or by the time I'm done with you, you'll look like a dredge. Only more so." or "I'm after something very specific. Maybe you can help me find it."
  • "Yeah, I think you could stand to have some smarts beaten into you."
Pan "Oh, I'm very interested. Tell me about these special wares." "I want to know about the Am Fah. And I want to hurt you. I can only have one of these things. Which will it be?"

Dialogue[edit]

Initial dialogue[edit]

Xan Hei
"The Am Fah are little better than carbuncles, unsightly blemishes festering on the glorious face of Kaineng. They lurk in places decent people fear to go, and time has emboldened them. The Dragon Empire does little to stop them, and the Am Fah brazenly walk the streets as a result. As much as I am loath to say it, that may work in our favor. When an organization becomes so large and so recognizable, it becomes difficult to keep secrets. Secrets are a valuable commodity to some; they can be bought and sold if you know where to look.
"We should travel to The Marketplace. Its name carries more connotations than the obvious. We should be able to learn something there, if we speak to the right people. But remember to play this smart. If you go in there and demand answers, people will suspect you. If you accept, then speak to me again when you are ready to go. I will take us there."
Yes Accept: "'Espionage' is practically my middle name."
No Decline: "I am surprisingly anti-social."
Ask Ask: "Make certain that you are ready. We must head to the Marketplace."
Yes Accept: "I'm ready."
No Decline: "I'm still preparing."

Intermediate dialogue[edit]

Finding information[edit]

Ja Wen
"I come here often, when I need inspiration for my stories. Seeing so many different kinds of people come together, people whose paths would otherwise never cross...it's kind of bizarre, isn't it? It makes you feel as though you've stepped through the shadows into some other world... Wait. Yes. Yes! That's it! "Otherworld: Through the Shadows" will be the title of my next book! It will be dark and mysterious, with an edge of raw sensual appeal... Oh, I can already feel the money pouring in!"
Chi
"Fancy armor you're wearing there, stranger. You looking for some company?"
⇒ "Company, no, information yes."
"Information is something I'll always have a steady supply of, as long as people keep talking in their sleep."
⇒ "I'm looking for information about the Am Fah."
"Those Am Fah thugs don't know how to treat a lady like me. I just might have the information you are looking for, and I may be willing to share it. Or maybe I don't and won't. I'm a very mysterious woman."
⇒ "I know exactly what a lady like you is interested in." (Pay 50 gold.)
"You're a lot less naive than you look. I'm not sure how much sense you can make of it, but whatever the Am Fah are planning, they have sent more of their thugs to be involved than I've ever seen before. For so many of them to take time off from terrorizing shopkeepers and shaking down honest working ladies such as myself, well...let's just say that whatever they're up to must be very important to them."
⇒ "I'll let you get back to work now."
⇒ "Those Am Fah must not know true beauty when they see it! I'm nothing like them..."
"Cute. Oblivious and kind of dumb, but cute. Your naivete has a certain charm to it, though, so I will give you one piece of information. The Am Fah have sent a large portion of their forces for...something. Where or for what, I'm not sure. Whatever it is, it must be very important to them."
⇒ "Thanks. I think..."
Pan
"Well, hello! Can I interest you in something that you can really sink your teeth into? If you get what I mean. These are very special goods, the likes of which you won't find anywhere else."
⇒ "Oh, I'm very interested. Tell me about these special wares."
"When it comes to my art, I know things that no one else does. I've traveled across the land, searching far and wide...all secrets to understand; the power that they hide. Once you've had a taste of what I'm offering, you won't consider speaking to anyone else."
⇒ "Alright, I'm sold. What's it going to cost me?"
"Twenty-five gold. Twenty-five gold for the best bread you will ever have. In your entire life."
⇒ "Wait. Did you just say bread? I was actually hoping to purchase information about the Am Fah..."
"I think your espionage skills need a bit of work. I'm clearly just a baker. But let me tell you this: the Am Fah are everywhere, and they are not always out in the open. Someone here is one of them, I guarantee it, but I don't know who. If you find the information you're looking for, be careful of it. How do you know it isn't someone telling you exactly what they want you to hear?"
⇒ "I'll keep that in mind, thanks."
⇒ "I want to know about the Am Fah. And I want to hurt you. I can only have one of these things. Which will it be?"
"The Am Fah? What? I'm just a baker! Why would I know anything? And for the love of common sense, keep your voice down! You have no idea who could be a member of the gang and who could overhear you. I'm certain that someone here is one of their members. Maybe you want that kind of trouble, but I certainly don't. Now leave me be!"
⇒ "My mistake."
Jeiff
"Know things? Know things! Yes, I know things. A great many things. Ask me about the birds that live in my hair. ASK ME!"
Chou Chu
"What? Oh gods! They can't see me talking to you!"
⇒ "Whoa there, calm down. Who can't see you talking to me?"
"They! THEM! Oh no, is that one of them now? What do you want?"
⇒ "I just want information on the Am Fah. Do you know anything?"
"What? No! Nothing, I know nothing! Can't walk in this muck, no footing at all!"
⇒ "You know *they* are working with the Am Fah. Plotting against you. If you tell me what you know, the voices will stop."
"Ahhh! OK,[sic] I know that there is a big cup. They love their cup; it is their precious! Ha, and they say I'm mad! Carrying that stupid cup around, oh-so-carefully clutching it in their dirty, filthy hands. But what if the cup IS precious? They like it; perhaps I should like it. I MUST HAVE IT!"
⇒ "The Six only know what the Chalice would do to your already...vibrant personality. I bid you farewell."
⇒ "Tell me what you know or I will drown you in whatever invisible slime you are standing in!"
"No! Don't hurt me! Don't hurt me like the cup people! Noooooooooooo!"
⇒ "Cup people? That must be the Chalice. You have been surprisingly helpful."
Vai Di
"Look at this place. I feel as though I'm surrounded by the dregs of Canthan society. Maybe the Ministry of Purity should spend less time dealing with the Afflicted and more time dealing with the sicknesses that are plaguing us from within. Decent folk like myself can scarcely walk the streets anymore with any modicum of safety!"
Kun Yao
"Welcome to the Marketplace. You can find anything that you're looking for here, as long as the price is right."
⇒ "I'm good for it, if you've got what I want."
"Right to the point. I like that. So let's talk business. What can I interest you in?"
⇒ "The Am Fah has been on the move recently. I need to know more."
"The Am Fah! I might know something, but it's valuable information... That makes it dangerous. What can you offer me to make it worth the risk?"
⇒ "There's no risk to you; the Am Fah will have to deal with me, and that will be the end of them."
"I see. Don't be surprised, but I already know who you are and what you've accomplished. I believe it when you say that you can deal with the Am Fah, but consider this: if I know who you are and what you're after, then how many other people know? And what will they do with that information? I will offer you this much: a name. Jeijou, Shadow Whispered. Find him, and you'll find what you're looking for."
⇒ "I'll keep that in mind."
⇒ "I can offer you a punch in the face. It's obviously what you need!"
"That's the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Very well, I'll give you something out of pity: a name. Jeijou, Shadow Whispered. I hope that pursuing him grants you the death that you so richly deserve."
⇒ "Thank you, kind sir."
⇒ "Tell me what you know of the Am Fah or I'll throw you...um, far!"
"That's the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Very well, I'll give you something out of pity: a name. Jeijou, Shadow Whispered. I hope that pursuing him grants you the death that you so richly deserve."
⇒ "Thank you, kind sir."
Sho Ri
"Isn't it supposed to be a marketplace? Aside from that baker over there, it seems like most people are just standing around being shady. Actually, maybe that baker is the shadiest of them all. What mysteries does his bread hold?"
Nails
"You lookin' fer sumthin?"
⇒ "I'm after something very specific. Maybe you can help me find it."
"Oh yeah? Usually I don't find much 'cept fights. Issat what this is about? You wanna fight?"
⇒ "Yeah, I'm looking for a fight. But it's with the Am Fah, not you."
"The Am Fah, huh? That's a pretty serious fight yer pickin'. You must be crazy...or stupid. Maybe both. Either way, I like you. You seem like an awright sort of person."
⇒ "So you'll help me then?"
"Yeah, yeah. Here's what I know. The Am Fah came to me not too long ago. They were lookin' fer some extra muscle to help with a job in Nahpui Quarter. Sounded like they were moving someone or something. Whichever, it seemed like a big deal. Maybe you should look inna that?"
⇒ "I'll have a look. I'm itching for some trouble."
⇒ "Yeah, I think you could stand to have some smarts beaten into you."
"You threatenin' me? Awright punk, let's do this. I'm gonna beat some manners into you!"
⇒ "Oh, it's on!"
⇒ "The Am Fah. Tell me what you know about them now, or by the time I'm done with you, you'll look like a dredge. Only more so."
"You threatenin' me? Awright punk, let's do this. I'm gonna beat some manners into you!"
⇒ "Oh, it's on!"

Information gathered[edit]

If the player got good responses:

Fah Yu the Shadow's Eye: "It appears that you might be a little too clever for your own good. Savor the knowledge that you've gained while you can, because it's going to die here with you."
Xan Hei: "Looks like this was their idea of a trap. They've got the Marketplace covered."
<Party leader>: "Let me tell you something: never put me in a trap. Worse foes than you have tried. Now think about that; how did things end up for them?"

If the player got bad responses:

Fah Yu the Shadow's Eye: "Perhaps we overestimated the threat you might be to us. If you've learned anything, it was only dumb luck. But you will still die for the information you have gained."
Xan Hei: "I have to admit. I was expecting a bit more...subtlety."
<Party leader>: "Does it matter? We got what we needed! Let's just take care of this."

After the fight:

Xan Hei: "Now that the trash has been dealt with, what have you learned?"
<Party leader>: "We're looking for someone named Jeijou, Shadow Whispered. There's something going on in Nahpui Quarter that has drawn the attention of a large number of Am Fah, and it's likely that the two are related."
Xan Hei: "Then we know where we must head next. Whoever this Jeijou is, he's important enough to the Am Fah that they can no longer afford to act discreetly. He must have some connection to the Chalice of Corruption. Let's go find out."

Reward dialogue[edit]

Xan Hei
"This was a worthwhile endeavor. We have learned the name of the one we are after and where they will be. As a bonus, we removed a little filth from the streets. All that's left is to remove the threat, so that it never rears its head again. Come and speak with me once more when you are ready."

Trivia[edit]

  • "Let me tell you something: never put me in a trap. Worse foes than you have tried. Now think about that; how did things end up for them?" combines various quotes from the Eleventh Doctor of the British science-fiction television show Doctor Who.
  • Pan's dialogue "I've traveled across the land, searching far and wide...all secrets to understand; the power that they hide" is a reference to the Pokémon themesong.
  • Chu Chou's dialogue, "Can't walk in this muck, no footing at all!" may be a reference to Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. His "It is their precious!" dialogue is an obvious reference to Gollum, from the Hobbit.
  • Ja Wen's idea for a booktitle "Otherworld: Through the Shadows" may be a reference to Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking-Glass.
