Tsuke Atari (born 1054 AE) is the latest in an infamous line of assassins from Kaineng City. Her mother, Tsuke Geta, raised her to respect the special creed of the Tsuke assassins, before sending her to study at Shing Jea Monastery in 1069 AE, where she quickly became a top student.

In 1072 AE, she was passing Minister Cho's estate when she heard a commotion within. Investigating, she found Master Togo and some fellow students fighting to reach the minister and offered to help them. From there, she got heavily involved in the fight against Shiro Tagachi. She was impulsive, and would often get herself intro trouble by shadow stepping into battle far ahead of her allies. As a result she was heavily wounded by Shiro, and so played only a small part in the final battle against him. After the fight against Shiro, Atari joined the Obsidian Flame guild, though she maintained a level of independence. In 1075 AE, she followed Kormir to Elona. In the Realm of Torment she was delighted by a chance to revenge herself on Shiro Tagachi and reclaim the honour she perceived herself to have lost by her quick defeat at his hands in Cantha.

Three years after the events of Nightfall, she was reunited with her past allies when they travelled north to fight the Destroyers. On returning alone to Cantha, she was recruited to fight alongside the Ministry of Purity to eliminate the Afflicted. As she witnessed the Ministry's shift from righteousness to ruthlessness, she realised that she had also grown ruthless after all the time she had spent fighting beasts and monsters. In time, she relearned restraint, and considered this to have been her most important lesson.

Dialogue[edit]

Factions[edit]

Towns and outposts
"The assassins of my line traditionally fight alone. However, I understand that sometimes fighting alone accomplishes little. I am willing, for now, to work alongside others, as long as they don't get in the way."
Divine Path
"I was too rash in that battle. I have shamed myself. Still, I suppose I can be thankful that others were there to take up the slack."

Nightfall[edit]

Towns and outposts
"I didn't think when I followed Kormir that this was how things would turn out. I am not suited to open warfare. My approach would have been to assassinate Varesh personally.
Still, I am mired in this situation now. It is all I can do to help resolve it."
Throne of Secrets
"You never fight alone. These words stand in opposition to my family's traditional creed. Three years ago I would have rejected them and struck out on my own, but now that I see what they have accomplished, I wonder if it is my own tradition that stands in error.
Perhaps I need to change my ways. Is there dishonour in abandoning a tradition, if all it does is hold you back from honourable pursuits?"

Eye of the North[edit]

Far Shiverpeaks towns and outposts
"These Norn interest me. Their primary interest, like mine, is in the hunt. Perhaps it would be worth comparing my stories with theirs."
Tarnished Coast towns and outposts
"I should have worn something looser. This jungle heat is making my armour chafe."
Central Transfer Chamber
"A massive creature of lava and stone...this is going to ruin my daggers."
Epilogue
"I feel strangely unsatisfied about this victory...maybe that's because it was a god last time."

Quotes[edit]

Factions[edit]

Shing Jea Island
"Are you following me?"
"If you're waiting to see my face, give it up. The mask stays on."
"Nothing is forbidden."
Kaineng City
"Just because we're working together doesn't mean I want you breathing down my neck all the time."
"Out of respect for Master Togo, I will accompany you when asked, but I would prefer to be left to my own devices."
"Perhaps I can get a better view from that rooftop."
Echovald Forest
"Back off. You're crowding me."
"That would be a good place for an ambush."
"The Kurzicks and I share many traits, chief among them a respect for tradition."

Nightfall[edit]

Kourna
"Copy my movements exactly. I know how to get past things like this."
"I'd appreciate it if you stopped drawing attention to me."
"The Kournan military chose their side, and I will strike them down as I would any monster."
Vabbi
"I don't understand why some people insist on surrounding themselves with such frivolities."
"Surely we have more important things to do than party with wealthy layabouts."
"These so-called princes could keep the poor of Kaineng fed single-handedly, but instead they horde their wealth for no purpose. It is a selfish waste."
The Desolation
"How in the Emperor's name does sand keep getting into this garb?"
"Letting Palawa Joko go was the honourable thing to do. I respect that."
"Vast empty space, isolation and a burning stench in the air. This is more like it."
Realm of Torment
"Does a god even have vital points?"
"Don't distract me. I'm trying to work out how to kill a god."
"Face the madness. Permit it to pass over you and through you, and where it has gone there will be nothing. Only you will remain."

Eye of the North[edit]

Far Shiverpeaks
"First rule of combat, don't let them know where you are."
"I detest snow. It leaves clear tracks, crunches underfoot, soaks my shoes and numbs my toes. I hope our business in the mountains is concluded soon."
"The Ebon Vanguard must be quite determined to live the way they do for so long. Their resolve is admirable."
Tarnished Coast
"Destroyers? Bah. Hunting raptors, now that's a challenge."
"I honestly expected a race of supposed geniuses to argue less."
"This jungle offers plenty of places to hide and lay an ambush. That is useful to me, but keep your eyes open for our enemies trying to take the same advantage."

Battle quotes[edit]

"Banter is a waste of concentration."
"Don't insult me by begging for mercy."
"Don't worry. You'll only feel it for a second."
"I am Justice incarnate, and I will purge this world of your foul presence."
"I've never missed a target. I won't start now."
"Let's make this quick. I have more important targets."
"My judgement must not teeter."
"My name is Tsuke Atari. Prepare to die."
"Stop pretending. You're already dead."
"You shouldn't have left yourself open like that."

Trivia[edit]

  • Her name is a conjunction of two Japanese terms from the Oriental board game Go: tsuke, meaning a stone played adjacent to an enemy stone with little support, and atari, meaning the immediate threat of capture.
