After 150 years of the destruction of the Great Destroyer, charr hordes had conquered the Kingdom of Ascalon. Only Ebonhawke, the last fortress of ascalon stands. Humanity had been united since then, and with the discovery of new magical weapons (shardstorm repeating gun, Thunder cannon and flamethrower), they could begin the long crusade to retake their homeland.
Yet before they could start their crusade, they must make sure that no charr army will be able to slip into kryta. And in order to do that, they have to secure the small ice fortress of Coldstone.
The Zealots of Shiverpeaks, a famous guild from the Frozen Isle occupied the fortress a few years ago, and has been performing many hit and run attacks against the charr forces. However, the fortress was not prepared for a full-scale charr attack. Worse yet, the fortress was guarding several windy paths that would lead to southern kryta! Mage-captain Boreal ordered the zealots to leave this key strategic location, but their refusal left him no choice, but to take it by force. Soon elements of the 1st Ascalon liberators and 3rd Ice warriors began their push, to keep these paths, and kryta secure.
[edit] The beginning of the Siege
from the journal of sergeant Tanteus of the liberators.
squad members:
- sgt. Tanteus
- Matiel
- Tark
- Zoanth
- Leeroy and Kilroy
- Avian
"We began the push three days ago. We had to endure many attacks from skirmisher groups, although they were mostly recruits seeking challenge. They had their challenge. Matiel shot down two of them and before they noticed the Golem pilot used its thunder cannon to bring down most of the remaining. Those who survived had fled. Then, after countless more attacks, we reached Coldstone. Captain Boreal once again tried to convince them to give us the fortress and fight against the charr with united force, but they flatly refused again, saying that they would not let the ground taken from the charr to be taken again, as they thought we, the guardsmen are weak. The time for talk was over, and our golems and dreadnoughts began bombarding the fortress with Fire, Stone and Thunder. We started the push to the gate in the covering fire of two dreadnoughts. At the gate Tark's flamethrower proved to be invaluable, as many of their warriors came to the gate to prevent us from entering. Leeroy and Kilroy were the first to enter the fortress, only to be cut down by their warriors. "
[edit] The Siege
Tanteus and Matiel rained death to the zealots. They were soon pushed back from the gates, allowing the rest of the squad to enter and gain a foothold in the complex. Step by step they began to take the outer courtyard. Matiel was wounded by one of the rangers, and the zealots' mages stole Tark's sight. The first push was stemmed there. In the slaugther, Avian the dreadnought came in, and used it's flame cannon to start clearing the walls. Tanteus knew that they have to capture the wall in order to secure the courtyard. He and Zoanth rushed into one of the towers. They made use of their bayonettes more than anything on the stairs. When they finally emerged on the walls from the bloody mess they left in the tower, the reinforcements arrived, and most of the defenders of the outer courtyard surrendered. Although the battle was far from over, Tanteus' squad was tasked to keep the walls secure.
[edit] The Sewers
The gates of the inner fortress resisted the attacks of even the strongest golem weaponry. The enchantments were too strong and too ancient to be broken by Boreal. As this fortress was too important and the icy night was almost upon them, they decided to find out if the sewers of Coldstone can grant them access to the inner fort. Tanteus and Matiel were chosen into the infiltration force, as well as Zoanth. Two of the Ice Warriors bombardment squad came with them along with Lilyah, the healer of boreale's squad.
Inside the sewers they found many rats and ice crawlers lurking for fresh prey. Though they could quickly eliminate them, they lost considerable time as the sounds of battle must have reached the zealots. After wandering seemingly lost in the maze of the sewers, they had found an entrance to the inner courtyard.
