Personal Stats

Name: Ryu

Gender: Female

Age: 23

Race: Ascalonian

Personality: As befits a Warrior, Ryu is straightforward and blunt, cutting through all the unnecessary pleasantries to get to the real discussion. She doesn't like to waste time, especially when there's Charr she could be using that time eradicating. Ryu fights with a style befitting her name, which in some language, she doesn't know what, means 'Dragon'. She fights with a fervor little known in these days, the fervor of long forgotten knights, with armor a shining beacon, driving away the darkness. When around those weaker then her, those she needs to protect, she is a sight to behold, axe (her favored Warrior weapon) whirling, cutting a path through the forces conspiring against her, to come out victorious on the other side. She has been to hell and back, and doesn't mind going again, if it means a few more enemies will be slain this day, and a few more allies will be saved.

Bio: Ryu was raised in Ascalon, in the times before the Searing. She lived a peaceful life. Her mother was an Elementalist, her father a Monk. She whiled away the days, fetching her mother things for her spells, or helping her father tend to a sick patient in the small clinic he ran in their small other house next to the main one. She never dreamed she would be tossed into such a mess, the Charr invading and no one being able to stop it. No, she only had one thing on her mind growing up, and that was the big decision of what to choose for her primary profession. She was well aware that she needed her choice to be made by the time she turned 13, and 12 was slipping by painfully fast.

She never ended up needing to make that decision by her 13th birthday after all.

The Searing was upon her.

She doesn't remember much of that fateful day. She knows there was a lot of screaming, people bringing her here and there and always making her move. Her parents leaving, her mother to fight the Charr with the powers of the Elements and her father to tend the wounded, of which there were so many. Eventually things settled down. She was reunited with her mother, who was war-torn and haggard, but so joyful to see her daughter again, whom she had thought about the whole time, hoping she was safe. Ryu's father had no faired so well. A couple of Charr had broken away from the main force and went rampaging through the tents where the monks tended the injured. There had been no warriors there to protect them, since all the warriors were busy fighting the rest of the Charr. In vein, the monks had called up Smiting prayers, turning their thoughts to Balthazar, but none of them were trained in Smiting prayers well enough. They were all Healing monks, had always been, and fell quickly, their healing not enough to save them from the blade of an angry Charr.

Ryu and her mother settled down. Ryu's 13 birthday slipped past unnoticed, too many other things needed doing that were more important then her getting training in a profession. Ryu didn't care much. Her main concern was caring for her mother. She had expended a lot of energy that day, fighting the Charr, and never seemed to recover. She was weak, got sick easily, always needed Ryu there to care for her. Her spells grew smaller by the day, until she was finally resigned to the fact that she would probably never cast again, and would die soon anyway. On the day of her death, she called Ryu to her. "Ryu," she said, "you must seek out the trainers. I don't know where they are, or how you will find them, but you will. Start your search in Ascalon. Someone there will be able to help. You need an education. I don't want you to grow up unable to fight, to defend yourself." Ryu nodded and held her mother's hand until she died a few hours later. Chocking back the tears that threatened to spill over her face, Ryu packed up her few possessions and a few of her mother's that she knew would help her on her journey, and left. She made sure to take the things mother had used for her spells. Though Ryu was no trained Elementalist, she could do a little magic, and it may well be enough to save her from anything that attacked her along her venture to Ascalon. From here on out, it would look like Ryu would become an Elementalist, wouldn't it? Well, she considered it. She did end up having to use her mother's spells, but she found the magic came difficult to her, ran slowly through her fingers, unlike her mother who could run off spell after spell in a few seconds. When she got to Ascalon, she was surprised and relived to see that the trainers were there, and they were happy to have another recruit. Apparently there were many kids like her, some her age, some younger, a few older, who would be a bit behind on their studies. The trainers also thought she would put down Elementalist as her desired primary profession on the enrollment paper they gave all new recruits. Instead, she put Warrior. She knew magic was not exactly her forte`. If she chose it, she would have tried her best, but it never would have been good enough. She would always be a day behind the rest of the class, her spells would always cast a little slower. No, she had learned while caring for her mother that she enjoyed physical work, and fighting physically would be much more rewarding. She was a strong, sturdy girl, and knew she could handle it.

So warrior it was.

Ryu passed the next few years training, sword, axe, or hammer in hand. She grew taller, and much more muscular, and in time, she began to look like a true warrior, sweat glistening off her brow as she thrust and parried, swung and chopped, smashed and shoved. When it came time to choose a secondary profession, Ryu was blank. She hadn't even remembered most people had one, even if they didn't use it. Use of a person's secondary profession dwindles as the years go by. At first they are excited, and may use only skills from their secondary. Then, as they realize they cannot neglect their primary, they begin to use both, a little choppily, but their usage smooths out after a while. Then, eventually, they will start to wish to go deeper into their primary, and their secondary is left behind, used only rarely. So for Ryu, looking at many people, it was not apparent that they even had secondary professions.

After much thought, she decided she would choose Monk, in honor of her father. She had briefly considered Elementalist, but quickly dismissed that option in favor of the ability to heal. On her 16th birthday, she officially chose Monk, and though she knew she could change it later, and may do so even, Monk would always be her true secondary.

On her 18th birthday, Ryu left the training encampment. She left with no fanfare, no friends hugging her goodbye, no lover to kiss her farewell. All that had been done the day before (except the lover part, as Ryu had none), since Ryu knew that this day was monumental. It marked her transition from a child to an adult, a warrior apprentice to a Warrior, with the letter w capitalized, and her journey into the world began with a single step, free of interference or distraction from the ultimate goal of avenging her parents. She set out on a quest that day. A quest to kill all Charr.
