I don't really see how that is the case, seeing as I contributed sporadically and didn't touch anything in GWW: namespace other than voting in elections... I've done considerably more "admin-like" things on Emmett (voting on RfAs, commenting on policy changes, etc.) in my opinion- the only thing I can remember specifically not commenting on was the Feedback stuff and that's because I arrived months into the discussion. Droks on GWW was a poor attempt by someone else to troll him. The account only ever existed for trolling and has been inactive for ages. GWW is not facebook[edit]

I'm glad someone said something about that. The level of activity in the userspace:talk seems a bit excessive as of late, especially by a relatively small number of people. It's kinda of an eye sore on RC with so many of the same thing spammed all over... The past few days seemed especially worse; makes me want to propose some kind of "GWW is not facebook" policy, but I know it won't work. But then gain the repeated banning and warnings don't seem to deter some users either. In any case, thanks to you and other sysops for trying to limit talk page spam. --Lania Elderfire 05:18, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

I don't think it's the number of user:talk edits that matter since there are a lot of important discussions that occur there. But there isn't any way of distinguishing between spam (sometimes vile) and thoughtful discussion just by numbers... yeah slippery slope indeed, since then I'll have to ban myself too with the 90/10 rule ^^. --Lania Elderfire 15:44, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

I remember that I was taught this... to add what's in the parenthesis (or whatever that word is for ()) first. So that'd be 3. then it'd look like 6 ÷ 2(3) basically six divided by 2 first (as I was taught) leaves 3. then you have 3(3). Multiply that and you'd have 9. After all you multiply your answer (from six ÷ by 2 as you're pretending the (3) isn't there) by what you added in the parenthesis. :-) Is this correct Emmett? Kaisha User Kaisha Sig.png 04:44, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
In other words and another answer to this... Take the equation and turn it into this (6 ÷ 2) * (1 + 2) As 2 is in both and we know two is going to be divided by six and multiplied by the answer in (). so you put it into two separate sections as seen there. I added one plus two easily. and then I divided six by two. then I got each answer and multiplied. It's not really that hard, but it can seem complicated. It took me several math problems to figure this all out as this and compound numbers in my pre-algebra. I'm not the best at math, but I had two (one in hs. and one in college) teachers to help me learn some things. Kaisha User Kaisha Sig.png 04:55, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
Except I don't believe that's the case. I'll do 50 ÷ 25, which we know is 2. However, if I want to be a rebel and confuse the hell out of all of you, I'll factor 5 out of 25, thusly:
50 ÷ 5(5) = 2
Because we can, let's take it a step further and say that the 5 in parenthesis is really 2+3 (since 2+3 = 5), therefore:
50 ÷ 5(2+3) = 2
Does the form of the last equation look familiar? However, if we were to lump the 50 ÷ 5 together, we get a different critter:
(50 ÷ 5) * (2+3)
(10) * (5) = 50
50 != 2
--Riddle 05:25, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
Here's a site that helps out a lot with the current equation that's not like your's. :-) have fun reading! Most have come up with the same answer - 9. Kaisha User Kaisha Sig.png 05:39, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
PEMDAS! :) Just rewrite the equation to be 6 / 2 * (1 + 2). Then parenthesis first 6 / 2 * 3. M/D same priority so 3 * 3 = 9. (Also if you see the equation this way Riddle, the fraction in your image would become 6 over 2 multiplied by (1 + 2)–User Balistic B d-dark.pngalistic 06:01, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
Let's start using variables! If we assume that x = 1+2, then we write the equation as: 6/2x; i.e. the 2 goes with the x to the denominator. Continuing on with the equation yields 3/x. When you substitute 1+2 back in for x, the equation becomes 3/(1+2) = 3/3 = 1. --Riddle 06:19, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
There is no fraction. / is usually used for ÷ in most forms that do not have ÷ as an option (like a keyboard). Also, A number next to a number like 3(3) is considered in most forms (check math.com for verfication) to be another form of multiplication in Algebra besides * . Kaisha User Kaisha Sig.png 06:24, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
Division is really multiplication, but with a fraction. 10 ÷ 2 = 10 * (1/2) = 10/2. That's why your TI-83's and up started using "/" instead of "÷". --Riddle 06:30, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
The 2 does not go with the x. Ties between multiplication and division are broken by evaluating from left to right. Therefore 6/2x = (6/2)x ≠ 6/(2x).--Irgendwer 06:54, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

6÷2(1+2) = 6/2(1+2). The ÷ and / signs are interchangeable. They both mean divided by. So the equation as originally presented was 6/2(1+2), or 6 over 2(1+2), a fraction. What is under the bar must be done first. So your denominator is 2(1+2) or 6. Numerator is 6 thus 6/6 or 1. If 6 and 2 were to be divided first, then they would be in parentheses, and the original equation would've looked like this: (6÷2)(1+2).

To prove that the answer is 1 simply substitute that for the answer and make one of the other numbers whose value you know a variable and solve.

6/x(1+2)=1
6=1x(1+2)
6=3x
2=x
So 1 is the answer. Sardaukar User Sardaukar sig.png 13:23, 28 April 2011 (UTC)

Order of operations states that you need to solve (1+2) first, which is 3.
6/2*3 = 9 - Infinite - talk 13:32, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
The equation has an exception. Sardaukar User Sardaukar sig.png 13:51, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
/doh Yeah, the answer is 9. Had it backwards. Ah well, I haven't taken a math class in 20 years, so have mercy on me. Thanks Emmett for the post. *disappear in a puff of logic* Sardaukar User Sardaukar sig.png 14:19, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
Ultimately, it's ambiguous. x(y+z) is typically seen as a distribution which would yield 1, but an overly strict interpretation of the equation would yield 9. -points --JonTheMon 14:59, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
Distribution is still subject to the standard order of operations. Interpretation in mathematics only exists to the extent that always get the same answer. --Irgendwer 17:18, 28 April 2011 (UTC)
The distribution is not what you see Irgendwer...There is no x. Kaisha User Kaisha Sig.png 03:18, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
If you want to get really tacky, you can get rewrite the entire thing in fractions (omitting that what is not really required to be rewritten, the parethesis' content):
6/1 ÷ 2/1 * (1+2) =
6/1 * 1/2 * (3) =
6 * 0.5 * 3 =
3 * 3 = 9 or 6 * 1.5 = 9
Fractions, so basic it's not really gonna get any more basic(er).
Also note that the issue never said it's 6 / <the rest>. That is an assumption. If it was in fact 6 / <the rest>, that <the rest> would be in parentheses. Which would yield the equation Riddle turned into a picture. The answer to that is even worse, because it results in 1.
But the actual issue is 6÷2(1+2) = ? , rewritten strictly as 6/2*(1+2) which equals 9.
So to summarize; Emmett's issue (on his user page) yields 9, whereas Riddle's equation yields 1. This is a matter of personal interpretation, but only the answer 9 is correct.
Maths is sincere like sylvari. - Infinite - talk 08:41, 29 April 2011 (UTC)
The parentheses are indeed the key. 6/2(1+2) = 9 whereas 6/(2(1+2)) = 1. Sardaukar User Sardaukar sig.png 08:59, 29 April 2011 (UTC)

Kaisha email[edit]

Sorry for missing you, I haven't seen you editing recently and you're in the "semi-inactive" list. If you actually care to read it, I can forward it to you. It's basically a lot of stupid cussing and NPA trolling calling me a basement-dweller and the like. ~FarloUser Farlo Triad.pngTalk 20:10, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

I am always around, I just don't feel the need to chime in on most discussions... which is why I listed myself as semi-active. However, like I said on the noticeboard, I've seen quite enough from her that I feel no burning need to validate my opinions with yet another email. :p Thanks for the offer though. – Emmett 20:19, 24 August 2011 (UTC)

hi shadowcrest[edit]

are u still a twilight fanboy please respond --nova 00:19, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

also multiplication by juxtaposition takes precedence over other forms of multiplication and division

okay im done now --nova 00:19, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

More than most men, I'd say.
According to whom?
Also hi. – Emmett 00:22, 26 September 2011 (UTC)
according to math? if it was 6/2a then it's obviously 6/(2*a). brackets do not imply multiplication, they only serve to reduce ambiguity because you can't write 2(3) as 23. therefore the juxtaposition still applies and takes precedence
of course if it was 6/2*(1+2) then it would obviously be 9
come play guild wors with me and gib me monies (obsi is expensive) --nova 00:12, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
Omission of an operator is multiplication in everything I've ever seen in the history of ever. "In algebra, multiplication involving variables is often written as a juxtaposition (e.g. xy for x times y or 5x for five times x). This notation can also be used for quantities that are surrounded by parentheses (e.g. 5(2) or (5)(2) for five times two)." (1) Furthermore, according to the calc teachers I gave the survey to, / is a grouping symbol and ÷ is not. Computer science order of operations thinks it's 9; math teachers think it's 9 significantly (statistically) more than english teachers do; even Facebook was weighted more heavily toward 9 (2).
My current activity in GW is basically limited to doing campaigns with my old e-bf because college is a lot of work. I'd farm UW with you sometime, but I'd have to learn how again and I'd also want half the ecto because I like to pretend sometimes that I care about ghostly hero title :p – Emmett 00:35, 27 September 2011 (UTC)
yeah thats exactly what i was saying. so if 6/2x = 6/(2x) then why isn't 6/2(1+2) = 6/(2(1+2)
and i think u just giving me money is a better idea -- nova 03:22, 28 September 2011 (UTC)
