[edit] Chapter One: The Beginning of the End of Ascalon

[edit] Rejection

It was a warm and breezy morning in the kingdom of Ascalon. The king of Ascalon, Adelbern surveyed a battle between a monstrous race of catlike creatures, named Charr, against his own men, the warriors of Ascalon. “My lord,” a man yelled out, who suddenly popped into view. “Yes, Scribe.” “The Elonian Organization, the Sunspears, have arrived!” “Yes, where are they?” “They are in Ascalon City.” “I wonder why all these other kingdoms seek to help us? We Ascalonians are not helpless!” King Adelbern walked into his throne room, dressed in his armor. A lone robbed figure walked in between rows of guards. As he approached the king, he knelt down. “Rise,” the king said solemnly. “Hello my lord. My name is Vereor Tenebrae, and I bring offer of an alliance between the Oder of the Sunspears and you. The Charr pose such a large threat, they could eventually cause trouble in places as far south as Vabbi and Kourna. We will supply men and equipment to help fight, if you lend us barracks. ” “Never! We Ascalonians are not helpless! We will fight this menace, even if it claims every one of our lives. No! We will not fail! You tell your leader, Kormir, to mind the business of Elona! Not Ascalon! We Ascalonians will never be helped by strangers, and you tell your leader this! Now leave!”

Vereor sighed. “Hmmm, no one believes that the Charr are a threat, except for The Order of the Sunspears. Odd, the sky is getting dark. Looks like something is brewing, and from the Northlands… Captain Wario!” “Yes, Castellan?” “We will be leaving shortly; the King does not want our help.” “Yes, sir!”

Vereor went into deep thought. “We’ve been to Kryta, to Orr, and Ascalon. The Krytan Empire dismissed us as spreading rumors. The King of Orr believed that we were over estimating the Charr. Now, the King of Ascalon refuses us because he doesn’t want help from foreign nations.”

[edit] Helping out

Vereor had been gradually wandering out of the city, when he heard a girl crying. He glanced over and saw a small girl, dressed in blue, sobbing. “Child, what is the problem,” he asked kindly. “I was playing my flute on the other side of the river. *sob* Then a bunch of scary monsters came and chased me off.” “I’ll see what I can do,” Vereor said as he smiled. He walked over to the river, and stuck his scythe out. “Alright, water’s not too deep.” He then awkwardly wadded through the water. “There’s her flute! Not too hard, was that?” Vereor stopped down to pick it up, when he heard a sloshing noise. He turned around to see a group of twenty skale crawl out of the water. “Hehehe, piece of cake!” With that he grasped his scythe in both hands, and rays of black light shoot from the ground, surrounding him. “You puny skale! Feel the power of Grenth!” When he stepped out of the light, he was entirely different. His armor had enlarged and grown green. His skin had disappeared and an ox head bone, stuck out of his hood. Vereor charged right at the mob of skale. Hacking and slashing away he went. The skale quickly dropped like flies; some tried to flee, but all died.

Vereor then stooped over, and picked up the flute. “Hmm, it’s broken. Ah well, might as well give her back her flute.” He walked back over gave the girl her flute. “Oh thank you, mister! Oh! It’s broken!” “Little girl, what is your name?” “Gwen!” “Ok, I’ll get you a brand new flute, how does that sound?” “Oh, that sounds wonderful!” So, Vereor led Gwen into Ascalon City. “Well Gwen, how do you like this flute?” “Oh, I love it! Thank you so much!” With this, Gwen happily skipped out of the city. Vereor was pondering what to do while he was waiting, when he heard the town crier say, “Prince Rurik has issued a warning! A Charr has been spotted behind the Great Wall! Be careful, and if you see the Charr, warn the Guards immediately!” “Sir!” Unending Fear jumped at the sudden voice, and wheeled around. “Oh! It’s just you Captain Wario. What is it?” “Sir, the caravan is ready to go.” Alright, hmm, soon we’ll be back in Kamadan. Oh well.” Soon enough, Vereor was leaving Ascalon City, with the other Sunspears. “Can I come along with you, mister?” “Sure Gwen, but are you sure you can get back to town safely?” “Oh yes, I don’t even really live around here, I live over at Ashford. My mom is the town Herbalist.” Vereor chuckled, and agreed to let her come. As the caravan went by Ashford Abbey, Unending Fear happened to glance over into the entrance to the Catacombs. He gasped; there was the unmistakable head of a Charr, peering around the corner of the wall. “Everyone, keep going, I meet back up with you at the docks.” “Yes sir!” Vereor ran ahead, but the Charr had already begun to flee into the Catacombs.

[edit] Kingdom of the dead

He immediately ran after the Charr. However, there were two directions to go; right at the start, and the Charr was faster than himself. On top of that, the smell of death assailed him. Vereor was descending the stairs, when two skeletons ran at him. “Whoa!” Vereor quickly changed into Avatar of Grenth, and ran right at them. He hacked away at them, but the Skeletons were barely phased. Vereor kept ducking and dodging the slashes of the enemies. He desperately smashed his scythe right into the skull of the skeleton. He then spun around and around, and then released. The skeleton flew off the scythe and smashed into the wall, exploding into bone shards. He did a back flip, and dodged another slash. Vereor slammed his scythe through the side of the remaining skeleton’s head, and repeatedly smashed it into the wall and ground; shattering the bones.Panting, he advanced on. Deeper and deeper he went fighting undead. Suddenly he heard chanting; dark, evil, and powerful sounding. He glanced over and saw a small passage in the wall, pitch black except a couple candles on the wall. All the light caste from the candles seemed to focus on the dead center of the room, where a severely mutilated moa lie chained to the ground, still squawking horribly. A figure in back of the moa, seeming to stare in the direction of Vereor, but looking down at the moa, chanting. The figure was entirely shadowed; all that could be seen was a pair of glowing red eyes. The figure suddenly drew a knife out of nowhere, raised it into the air, and then smashed through the head of the poor moa. The moa let out one more shriek, then died. A burst of light shot up from beneath the moa, and all of the cracks in the room poured out light. "YES! MORE POWER!" Suddenly, Vereor heard the most hideous laugh he had ever heard; more evil than even the murders he had escorted to the gallows in Kamadan. Vereor crept into the room. “Who are you? Why do you disturb my kingdom?”, suddenly screamed out from behind Unending Fear. He jump forward, then turned around; behind him stood the figure. His teeth chattering, he replied, “I am Vereor Tenebrae, a Sunspear Castellan, from Elona. I come here to find a Charr, who fled me.” “Your reasons seem fine…I am Sanguis Mortis, a Li... *ahem* master necromancer. I will speak to my brethren, maybe they have seen him who you seek.” With that he yelled out “Skullreaver! Come here!” A skeleton, lager than any he had seen before, staggered at him.

“Skullreaver, see if what this person says is true, has there been more intruders, a large catlike creature?” The skeleton shuffled off, and returned a few minutes later, carrying a large, bloodied, fang. “He says that one of the others caught the charr, and attacked him. The charr fled, but not without this”, with that, he tossed him the fang. “He went that way.” “Ok, thanks!” “But beware, Vereor Tenebrae! Skullreaver has warned that the Blood Fanatics, blood-drinking, former apprentices of Kasha Blackblood, are rejoicing. They chant ‘Soon the streets of Ascalon will overflow with blood.’ Beware…” With that, Vereor was once again in pursuit, while pondering many things. He thought to himself, “That Sanguis Mortis was strange. “How did he hear that skeleton? Why were his teeth long and jagged? And what do the Blood Fanatics mean?”

[edit] Back Into the light... and trouble

Soon, he found a passage in the wall, leading to a hill overlooking Ashford. “Light at la… Oh no! There the charr is!” With that, he began chasing, but the charr sent a small group of Grawl to slow him down. “Arhh, I don’t have time for this!” He whipped out his scythe, and quickly turned into an Avatar of Grenth. A Grawl raised his hammer into the air, then smashed it at him. He jumped back, while slashing with his scythe. His blade went deep into one of the grawl’s face. It let out an agonized howl, then fell to the ground dead. The rest surrounded Vereor. They swung their hammers at him. Vereor jumped into the air, and while descending, swung his scythe in a circle, decapitating them all. He glanced over, but the charr was gone.

Disappointed, he headed back to warn the guards. As he was passing through Ashford, he heard sweet flute music. Walking over to where it came from, he saw Gwen and another, women, older that Gwen, but younger than himself, who had hands made of solid ice. Before he could say anything, Gwen gave a cheery “Hello!” “Hello, Gwen! Who’s your friend here?” “She’s my best friend in the whole world, Jadis!” “After a quick introduction, they began to chat. “I take it you’re a visitor to Ascalon,” Jadis quizzed Vereor. “Yes, how did you know?” “I can tell by your unusual clothes.” “Ahh *chuckle*, very nice to meet you. They talked a little longer, when Vereor asked Jadis, “One question though.” “Sure, what is it?” “Why are your hands, well, made of ice?” Jadis’ brow tightened, “I’d rather not get into those memories…” “Oh, sorry for bringing up bad memories.” “No, no, it’s ok. Wow! It looks like we’re in for a storm,. The clouds are pitch black! I’m heading back to the castle, bye Gwen! Want to continue your flute lessons tomorrow?” “Oh yes! I’d love too! Bye!”

Vereor raced into town, “Guards, guards! I’ve seen the Charr!” After recounting his story another guard ran up to them, “The Charr has been spotted again, south of the Academy!” “Roger, let’s move!” “Can I come with you,” Unending Fear asked. “Yes sir!” Unending Fear met up in Ascalon Academy, and found more guards, and Prince Rurik himself. “You all are needed for a critical mission before we can begin our offensive against the Charr. Tidus, please inform the men.” “Yes, sir! Our sentries spotted Vatlaaw Doomtooth and his warband in the old bunker out behind the Citadel. He must have found a passage that led here from the Catacombs. Whatever his purpose, it can be no good.” Before the speech had even finished, Unending Fear was racing off, determined to slay the beast.

[edit] Battle in the bunker

Vereor ran into the bunker, where he encountered a large group of Grawl, numbering at least two dozen. He charged into the midst of the group, hacking and slashing. The bodies piled up, until there were only three left. Vereor suddenly heard a whizzing noise; he glanced over, and saw a new Grawl archer. “Oh sh…” His leg exploded into pain. The arrow stuck deep into his leg.

“Oh crud!” The two Grawls raised their hammers to smash him into pulp, when an arrow flew into the chest of the Grawl. They howled, and fell down dead. Vereor and the archer Grawl looked around for the mysterious attacker. Suddenly, the archer Grawl shrieked and fell down, dead, with an arrow in his face. “Who are you?" Vereor called out. A man dressed in green stepped out from behind a large rock. “Hey, I’m Pierce. I’m a scout from the Ascalon Vanguard. Now come on, let’s get you to the healer, and take care of that arrow.” Pierce help Vereor to his feet, and he hobbled out to the oncoming Vanguard. The healer yanked the arrow out, with Vereor howling in pain, then cast a spell, instantly healing the wound.

The group then raced in; and, after slaying more Grawl, finally confronted Vatlaaw. “Heh, you puny humans finally found me. It’s about time!” With that, Vatlaaw spun around, and fired an arrow into the face of one of the Vanguard. The man instantly fell dead. Vereor ducked under the oncoming arrows, and hooked the back of the Charr’s leg; jerking it forward, and pulling the Charr to the ground. The Charr grabbed the stump of his leg, and grinned hideously. “You’ve already lost! Ascalon is doomed!” With that, he let out a maniacal laugh, that was swiftly cut short with Prince Rurik’s blacking sword piercing his skull. Vereor glanced out the hole in the caves wall, noting that he could see over the Great Wall. He found where Vatlaaw was staring, and gasped. “Rurik, look! There Charr are performing some ritual, and the black clouds seem to be coming directly from there!” A sickening shriek ripped through the air; suddenly humongous meteors rain from the sky.

Vereor gasped, it seemed like the very stars were falling from the heavens. When they landed, the tore holes in the land, showering dirt and the splintered remains of tree and brick everywhere. "No!" Prince Rurik cried, as the meteors struck the city. Houses were smashed, lives brutally ended. Then, from the bowels of the catacombs the dreaded charr surged. The Ascalon guards fought back valiantly, but many, both guards and civilians, were slain or captured. The charr hastily retreated, and escaped back into the depths, moments before the entrances were smashed, and buried in rubble...

[edit] Chapter Two: Escape from the doomed land

[edit] Foreign Help

Almost two years had gone by since the horrific event known as the Searing. All communications had been cut off from Ascalon. The great city of Orr had sunken into the depths of the sea. Kryta, had managed to halt the Charr invasion into their lands, but instead were forced to fight an endless army of the undead, raise from Orr. However, though all hope for Tryia seemed lost, heroes rose from the ashes of Ascalon…

Wario had finally managed to start a voyage back to Ascalon. It had been two years since he had left Vereor behind. He remembered it in detail; loading up the last of the supplies, the shrieking, the explosions, then fleeing by boat. He was finally coming back. This time it would be longer, but he had arranged a journey, with Kormir's permission, with Kyrtan ambassadors.

Vereor had been forcefully drafted, due to his mother being Ascalonian. He was out on patrol, when a fellow ran up to him. “Quickly return to Ascalon City! There's news of foreign help ariveing, both Krytans, and a Sunspear! I'll take over your shift." Vereor heartily thanked him, and departed, to return to the city. Vereor was bursting with excitement, hoping it was his best friend, Wario. He raced past the guards along his path, an impatiently waited while the city doors were slowly opened and raced over to Warmaster Tydus. "Warmaster, where is the Foreign Ambassadors?" "King Adelbern has not aloud them with city limits, he still holds to his belief of no foreign help. You'll find them camping past the ruined houses." Vereor sighed and thought, "King Adelbern is a fool. In the face of total annihilation, he grows even more resistant to outside help." "I heard that sigh, Vereor. Do not think the King is foolish. Do you know why King Adelbern trusts me, Vereor Renebrae? Because I know where my loyalties lie. King and country, Balthazar preserve them both! Perhaps joining the Prince's Vanguard has confused you, but Rurik is not the ruler of the kingdom. Now listen to me. The king's already given this matter much consideration, and the likes of you and I best abide by his wisdom. Now take this letter with you to the Ambassador. When you're done, return immediately; I have more work for you."

Vereor raced back outside the city, and went north of where he had been scouting. He then saw a circle of tents, surrounding a large campfire. "Hello?" he shouted. One of the tents doors opened, and a Krytan stepped out, with a guard dressed in white with a red cape on each side of him. "Yes, who are you?" "I'm here to deliver a message from the King." "You certanly don't look like a royal messenger, however let me see it." The ambassador took the letter, but before he could read it, Prince Rurik and his guards strode up. "Hello, Ambassador Zain, let me welcome you to Ascalon." "Hello, Prince Rurik, so far our stay here has been one long cold shoulder from the King." "I apologize for him, but my father is stubborn. I'll try speaking with him, for you." "Thank you Rurik." After that, Rurik and his guards returned to the city.

"Well, messenger, please hand me the letter now." After Vereor handed it to Zain, he quickly ripped open the letter. As he began reading, a frown grew on his face. He began reading out loud to the rest of his carvan, "Your request for permission to enter the city and address the people of Ascalon is emphatically denied. This being the fourth such denial, His Majesty bids you reconsider this ill-conceived journey and contemplate a return to Kryta." After he was done reading it, Zain sighed, and threw the letter into the fire. "This King is a fool, his pride has grown far too much. He has doomed Ascalon." Vereor finnaly gathered up the courage, and asked Zain, "Hey, Zain, I heard that a Sunspear came with you on your journey here?" "Ahhh yes, shortly before you arived he left for the city. He said he was looking for someone." "Oh shoot! I probaly walked right past him!" with that, Vereor was off again.

[edit] The Great Wall

As he speed through the city, looking for his friend, Warmaster Tydus called out to him, "It looks like you delivered the message. Now, go to the Great Wall, Captain Calhaan is requesting you." "Ok, but..." "No buts, move it!" Vereor sighed, and was about to head to the Wall, when he felt his tapped. "What is it now Tydus," he groaned as he turned around. "Oh my goodness! Wario! Hey man! How's it been." The two vigorously shook hands, and began talking. "Well, Wario, I have to get going, Captain Calhaan wants me." "Ah, I can come along, maybe I can kick some charr butt." "Haha, well, let's go. Oh, one thing, Kormir told me to give you these if I found you." He then handed Vereor a new set of armor and a new scythe. "Wow, thanks," he exclaimed, "I can finally get out of these rags." Vereor took his rusty scythe off his back, and threw it to the ground. Vereor quickly went into the barracks and changed into his new armor. "Ok, now I'm ready, let's go."

When the two arrived, Calhaan was no where to be found. However, they found Squire Zachary. "Hey, where that Captain Calhaan, we were going to meet him here?" "He went outside the Wall, he fears the Charr are up to something. He wanted me to tell you too meet him outside, oh and take some back up with you. Stephan! Reyna! Orion!" At this point Vereor began sweating, these people had trained with him, and, Oh no, Alesia might be with them. She was horrible at fighting, so she decided to be a Monk, and was bad at that too. "Alesia!" "Ohhh shoooot..." "I want you four to go with Vereor, and see what Captain Calhaan wants."

Squire Zachary then opened the large wooden gates, and the group left the safety of Ascalon. Outside they found Captain Calhaan. "Hello Vereor Tenebrae. I've been waiting for you. The guard around here is tense, and I can't spare a single man. I want you to go scout into the enemy territory, and see if the Charr are up to something."

"Oh man...Ok, everyone, you know what to do, keep quite, and don't alert the Charr to our presence. Let's go." The group quickly ran trough the wasteland, fighting off a devourer or two as they went. Soon they came across the ruins of a gate, with a large group of Grawl. "Ok, we ready to do this?" Orion conjured up a large ball of fire above the enemies' heads, and then burst it, sending fire down on their heads. The creatures clumsily tried to ovoid the fire, but some couldn't, and were immolated. Immediately after, Reyna pulled three arrows out of her quiver, lit the arrows on fire, and launched them at the Grawl. The Grawl shrieked as the arrows embedded themselves in their flesh. The Grawl continued to screech as they burned up from inside. Wario hooked his spear to a chain attached to the armor on his wrist, and then proceeded to throw it through the neck of a grawl, and the arm of a Grawl behind that one. Wario proceeded to yank the chain as hard as he could, and ripped it out of the Grawl, and back into his hand. Vereor, Stephen, and Wario then charged into the remaining Grawl, swinging their weapons like mad men, slaying the survivors.

"Excellent everyone," Vereor praised. Reyna chimed in, "Ya, my bow rocked! I burnt those Grawl right up." "My spear was way better than your bow," Wario announced. "NO way!" "Yes!" "NO!" "Ok, people, let's continue." "NO! Uh, ya let's continue. But my bow is better!" "NO!" All Vereor could do is sigh. They continued on their patrol, and eventually reached a small cliff, overlooking the Charr camp. "Oh boy, they are definitely preparing for something..." "NO WAY IN THE WORLD! MY WEAPON IS BETTER!!!!" All the Charr instantly look up at the group, particular at the arguing Wario and Reyna. Oh man, you two just got us into big trouble. "It was her fault. "No way! It's your's! The Charr army began running at the group, breaking down the gates separating them. "Run everyone!" Vereor glanced over at Wario and noticed a pair of magical wings sprout. He recognized as as the Paragon's special mixture of a spell, and an incantation. "Fall Back!" Suddenly, Vereor felt energy surging through his legs, an unnatural boost. He and the others flew down the path, leading back to the wall, leaving the Charr in the dust. "Captain Calhaan! The Charr are coming! Bonfaaz Burntfur has amassed a small army, and he's charging this way!" "What!?!? Men, retreat! We must fall back to Fort Ranik! We'll regroup, and fight these fiends after!" The soldiers quickly ran behind the wall, shut it, and bolted it. But they knew it wouldn't hold the Charr very long. They quickly retreated southwards.

[edit] Fort Ranik
