Hey

I see you're still around and kicking. I would like to come back and do some renders if the wiki hadn't become so empty and inactive :C -- Chicken 1.jpg Magamdy 16:39, 11 January 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I nominated you for sysop. You seem to be on more often than I am and another set of eyes probably wouldn't go amiss at this point, so write up your speech on the page and we'll kick off the party. -Auron 09:52, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

Great. I accept the nomination. I'll get on to writing something then. Chieftain Alex 11:33, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
I added my support (as you probably noticed). I have a related question I want to bring up with you privately — could you either pop me an email or enable yours? – Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 18:24, 12 January 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, I've switched it on. Chieftain Alex 19:17, 12 January 2013 (UTC)

Signature images

Something is wrong here and I don't know how to fix it. Since the Eye of Janthir upload for user signature, the image is being linked to every talkpage I sign in. User Yoshida Keiji Signature.pngYoshida Keiji(talk) 17:18, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

Well we could add a redirect from your signature image, or you could use the link parameter on the file, e.g. [[File:User Yoshida Keiji Signature.png|17px|link=User:Yoshida Keiji]] Chieftain Alex 17:27, 13 January 2013 (UTC)
Or if you mean its just displaying the link to the filename, then perhaps its a cache issue on your side, you could purge it by deleting your cache or by pressing CTRL-F5 (either way I've created that redirect for you.) Chieftain Alex 17:29, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

Nick research edits

Sorry to barge in on you. It seems the Nick research page, the Nicholas page, and the GWW Main page are having a date issue. I temporarily edited the research page to display today as the week beginning (Jan 15) while the actual week began on Jan 14 (as per my original data update). When I did the Jan 14 edit, both the main page and the Nick page were displaying correctly. Since that time both have developed the error. When I switched the date to Jan 15 on the research page, the main page shows correctly, but the Nick page does not. Hope that can assist in locating the bug. Gwynna Vive 14:55, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

it seems probable that the edit you saw as "fixing" the main page didn't do anything and that it was YK's temporary fix on the activities page that has caused the main page to display correctly (in fact if you preview reverting YK's edit then it still shows as having found no dpl results). The testing I did earlier was inconclusive though, so I won't revert your edit to /research yet. (this dpl gives me headaches that I could do without when i've got structural mech tomorrow evening) Chieftain Alex 15:51, 15 January 2013 (UTC)
Not sure...this stuff gives me headaches too. I simply noticed that the info had changed since I put up the January 14th data, and that you had been attempting to fix something, so I thought it best to inform you that I purposely switched the date to the 15th on the research page and that only fixed the main page. Attempting to fix the problem is beyond my capability, but I did confirm that my research page date "patch" edit had fixed the main page, so the date issue is causing some of the problem...if that helps at all, wonderful. If not, someone with a memory (aka "not me!") needs to know that I switched the date for when someone does find the problem. Gwynna Vive 23:04, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

Hah, I'm looking into playing vandal scrabble with abusefilters, trying to think of some heuristic it can check though. (theres some kind of limit to number of checks it can do and basic operations..) Chieftain Alex 22:31, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

Abusefilter

Is there a way we could get abusefilter to apply a longer block if the user has been previously blocked multiple times? e.g. Zrisvvhen got blocked 9x by the filter. Chieftain Alex 10:41, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

Sadly there's no way of customizing how blocks are handled, whether by previous blocks, or particular filter, or IP vs registered, or anything. There's one config variable in LocalSettings.php for block duration, and that's it.
It might be possible to have Wikichu run a recurring check on users blocked by AbuseFilter to see if they've been blocked by AbuseFilter before (and never been unblocked by an admin) and extend them. Wikichu does have sysop privileges. Would need to talk to Poke about it. - Tanetris 20:37, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
Most of them I could probably get by just browsing filter 15 + scrolling down the users + checking if they were blocked or not, wouldn't take more than 2 hours or so to get down to users 3-day-blocked since the start of 2012. Chieftain Alex 13:26, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
Hi Alex, from what I am reading you need to automate a process then you could get through your blocked user list quicker? If you are familiar with the free program Open Office, I use the spread sheet program a lot. You could copy the blocked user list 500 at a time to the clipboard and paste it into a blank worksheet. But you do a "paste special" and you are prompted for the format. You can select "Fixed width" or use a character such as commas or spaces to select the break points on the columns. After this just do a Data->Sort and then select the username column. I hope this will expedite the search sorting it for you instead of two hours scrolling up and down. --Wendy Black 14:18, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
The only time consuming bit is using checkuser properly to avoid blocking legitimate users :D generating a list of users who trip a filter 15 is easy, the filter just doesn't label which accounts are blocked until I click on them, and it
I could however use something along the lines of "mark duplicates" + then negate any users that haven't been marked as duplicates - its the repeat offenders that are annoying :P Chieftain Alex 14:59, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
It's actually even easier to check the block log. Going by just the first 500 entries (which go back to August), looks like all the repeat offenders whose most recent action has been this month or last month are infinite-blocked (you'd done most of them, a couple previously done by Jon, and I just did two). My personal feeling would be that's probably good enough to cover backlog (if they're only repeating every 2 months, it ain't exactly pressing, though of course if you wish to be more thorough, by all means), but automating it going forward may still be worth pursuing. - Tanetris 15:48, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
Hmm they both have duplicates in. As far my preference between filter15/block log matching abusefilter would go, I'd choose the filter since it doesn't have abusefilter (block) buttons which the block log does. I don't want to find out what happens when you attempt to block the filter :) Less mistaken block chance imo. Chieftain Alex 16:15, 24 January 2013 (UTC)

(Reset indent) I got bored and checked/infi-blocked the last 500 users blocked by abusefilter 15. Any repeat edits we get from vandalbots that last triggered before the 1st of August 2012 are going to be rare, but a possibility. Apologies for spamming RC with it, but finding users previously blocked multiple times irked me. -Chieftain Alex 00:40, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

Nick research part 2

Hey there. I just saw your edit on the research page. And while it's nice to be less cluttered I think it's actually less helpful than intended, at least for me. Since the second cycle started editing the page was easy: just copy paste the right entry from the 1st cycle and change the dates. Done. Now it will become a chore. If this change is some official wiki stance would you kindly point me to it? Otherwise you could add a paragraph to the talk page and ask for other people's opinion? Cheers! Steve1 21:51, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

Yeah I know you hate me and that won't have helped ;) but you know how the Nicholas dpl is currently broken so the automation doesn't work? I'm investigating the cause of it. I'll revert it by the end of next week at least, but I suspect the dpl is seeing all those entries, thinking "geez guys I can't scan all that" and cops out before completion, rendering our Nicholas page useless. Theres a limit of 250/500 entries before dpl usually stops looking - I think we've only hit about 200 or so entries. Chieftain Alex 22:12, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
Darn it, you figured me out! *devil* I had no clue that the page was broken. But good luck figuring it out! Steve1 22:24, 21 January 2013 (UTC)
Why did nobody tell me that it’s broken? :P I figured out the cause of this and issued a temporary fix to the main page. Nick’s article is unfortunately a bit more complex so I might not put a temporary fix on that if I can fix the whole thing earlier.
One question though, when did this problem first appear? I saw that the first fixes appeared on Jan 15th and that’s also when the first thread appeared on your talk page; was that really the first occasion though?
Regarding the DPL limit (which is unrelated to the real problem btw), I guess it’s time to archive some of the data from the research page anyway ;) poke | talk 11:05, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
yeah - the first oddity was observed on the 15th, I couldn't figure out for the life of me why it wasn't working though. It wasn't when the year changed, or that there was a funny number of weeks occurring. Did anet stealthily update how well the dpl + variables mesh? (i.e. with a padded hammer)
Will there eventually be a dpl issue with the number of entries? (I don't recall if 250 or 500 is the limit - we're on about week 201). If we're well short of the limit, then anyone could revert me and that would be fine, else perhaps we should archive. Chieftain Alex 11:14, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
I found a discussion that sounded somewhat similar at Extension talk:DynamicPageList (third-party)#Problems with VariableExtension.. I cannot find any documentation for "#dplvariable" though. Chieftain Alex 11:40, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
I don't think that issue is really related with it, as the parser has changed a lot with DPL v2; and the topic is actually so old, that it is unlikely that it just now appeared on our wiki. So yeah, I guess that the variables extension got stealth upgraded, or something else that intersects with it (I don't think there was another DPL update, as those go usually through me :P). But I will investigate this and try to find a permanent fix to get this working again. I actually believe that we used the combination of DPL and variables in a few other locations on the wiki, so I don't really want to do without it. poke | talk 20:03, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
Given that we're supposedly running the same mw version as gw2w, I'd have thought they would be getting problems with gw2:Template:Skill table row and friends, which use variables for each line. I guess there must be hidden differences beyond what it shows at Special:Version eh. (also, i'd forgotten you were the resident dpl pro, I only recalled your name from ListTransclusions.. I've clearly not spent long enough trawling through mediawiki extensions :P and now I look, I see algorithmix/gero mentions you on the talk page!) --Chieftain Alex 21:37, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
“and now I look, I see algorithmix/gero mentions you on the talk page!” – Oh, funny, you're right; never noticed that before ^^ But yeah, I'm somewhat the person to talk to about DPL here, most of those complex things are my work.. hence me being interested when they suddenly stop working :P poke | talk 22:09, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
Found the last dpl thing I did with variables. That didn't work either, but I still suspect a user error. simplified code later. Chieftain Alex 22:19, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
{{#dplvar:set|a|x|b|y|c|z}}
{{#dplvar:default|a|aaaa}}
{{#dplvar:default|d|dddd}}
a={{#dplvar:a}}
b={{#dplvar:b}}
c={{#dplvar:c}}
d={{#dplvar:d}}
a=x
b=y
c=z
d=dddd
I found the documentation for the dplvariables .. it was linked from the front manual page >.> I'll test it at the weekend, see if it makes a difference. Chieftain Alex 12:18, 24 January 2013 (UTC)
@ Poke, fix implemented. dpl variables have a pretty nice setup. :D --Chieftain Alex 13:41, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

(Reset indent) I eventually remembered to revert the nicholas list :P I'll have a go at using those dplvars tomorrow. --Chieftain Alex 12:45, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

That was a nice fix, well done! Didn't really expect that to work, but it's nice to see it does ;) I'm still investigating on the original issue btw.. poke | talk 21:52, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
Ah thanks, yes it was much simpler than I could possibly have hoped for :D Stephane did indeed admit that they made a change to the wiki backend without telling us :p -Chieftain Alex 23:07, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

Skill type

May I update the page to reflect the aesthetic layout of GW2's Skill type, and create a nav to link all skill type-specific pages?
p.s. When do you plan on updating the Main Page's layout (I like it ^_^)? --Falconeye 00:24, 28 January 2013 (UTC)
Could you mock up what you want the skill type page to look at? Currently our setup is v. mechanical and strictly observes the ingame heirarchy.. I'm not sure something with icons split by professions would do the same thing. We'd end up with lots of overlap... Still, if we have a test page to compare it to, its easier to choose, right?
thats kind of you to say so, I was thinking of updating the mainpage when its next halloween/wintersday/when people care to comment on it. Chieftain Alex 00:53, 28 January 2013 (UTC)

Happy Canthan New Year Chief!

Just stopped in to say you are doing a great job, I hope you are finding the time to enjoy the Canthan New Year. So far I got my mini cel-snake (I was born year of the snake) and 2 other guild members gave me a monkey and a dragon! Then I am sh** at this beetle racing so I blew 2e on a zaishen gold coin and puchased my new exotic pet at the zoo. There are a lot of people who ask about new hats this year, so I take them outside and show them Speed. He is only a level 6 but I am going to get him up to snuff. They need to advertise these new ranger pets better, everyone thinks I am talking about a mini. LoL --Wendy Black 14:06, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Lol, you spend a gold zcoin on a pet? xD You should have done some pvp for 10k balth :D -Chieftain Alex 15:19, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
LoL everyone in PvP is a bot or a jerk or both. However it was pretty funny, I went to Kamadan and asked if anyone has a Gold Z Coin... Someone asked me for 2 ecto or something valuable to trade. I said I have plenty of platnum and they still insisted on ecto. So I went to the rare materials trader bought 2e then traded. That just seems so messed up when people refuse the gold or platnum. The minis I got will get dedicated soon, but I found them to be running 22 ectos, so that was quite a gift they gave me. --Wendy Black 00:14, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
Probably all of that person's characters and storage were already holding the maximum (or near the maximum) amount of gold, hence he could only trade for items (e.g. ecto). You could have earned the Balthazar faction by farming Training Arena, Zaishen Challenge and/or Zaishen Elite if you wanted to avoid actual players. --Silver Edge 02:26, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
+ JQ doesn't count as PvP either, so I'm quite happy there.. -Chieftain Alex 11:17, 4 February 2013 (UTC)

Speculations

Sup! This edit http://wiki.guildwars.com/index.php?title=Lorespinner_Sta_Si&curid=111438&diff=2532781&oldid=2532766 made we wonder about gwiki policy regarding speculations. I thought I had seen in other articles that it was generally removed.

And if speculations are fine, maybe Sta Si was named after Stasi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stasi , after all she's a lorespinner. See what I did thar? ;) Steve1 22:04, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Well, there are three lorespinner articles, namely Lorespinner Sta Si, Lorespinner Emmah Li and Lorespinner Ri So.
If they had been individually unique, i.e. one existed but not the other two, I'd be hesitant to add it, but all three names resemble three (former) arena-net personnel, who were incidentally writers. I don't think there is any reason not to mention it. (i.e. random chance of each not being a reference is very small) -Chieftain Alex 22:30, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Preventing IP edits

Whenever you prevent all IP edits and account creation, you may wish to put up a sitenotice or at least have some sort of announcement (maybe CP?) --JonTheMon 17:13, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Hmm. I'm totally new to this griefing user scenario. I'm not sure discussion will work on such users with so many repeated attempts, blocking them when they turn up is ineffective. Could you explain the abbreviation of CP? (on the plus side I checked the logs and minus one guy trying to add that heroes join in with emotes, not one legit edit was blocked.. I can't speak for account creation though) -Chieftain Alex 17:26, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Isn't this a big red button that no one's supposed to push? Especially without discussion? pling User Pling sig.png 20:10, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
It was like pushing two massive red buttons at once.
If I'd waited long enough for discussion, there'd be hundreds of malicious edits. >< This way there were only a few from before the blockade. 1 almost legitimate ip edit was made, + a few users will have been deterred from creating accounts for a bit. I admit not posting a related topic anywhere, Community Portal / banner / my talk, was a bit imprudent but this kind of vandal gets their kicks out of other people's attention. -Chieftain Alex 20:33, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Template:Nicholas the Traveler dialogue

For some reason the Raisu Palace dialogue isn't appearing on Nicholas the Traveler. It might have something to do with this week's location page name having brackets, i.e. Raisu Palace (explorable area). --Silver Edge 07:40, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

I'm sure it was to do with how I'd badly written the include chapters bit, but I've added a string functions fix for the time being. (works with the other bracketed zones at least). Good find. -Chieftain Alex 09:23, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

Wiki Question

I notice you are about one of the only people on here cleaning the bots off eh? I am not a complete moron, but other than the usual blurry text CAPTCHA, isn't there another Turing test that could be used to tell us from them? I think the best one I ran into was on some forum and whatnot. It said this; If you are not a bot leave this next line blank. Then it asked me some stupid question with an edit box. I imagine this might confuse simple minded people like me, but could limit the vast amounts of bots trying to create accounts on here. Just a thought don't you know. Simon of Aragon - talk 11:23, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

yep, its a good idea, putting a CAT-CAPTCHA would probably stop anyone creating an account at all. Anet could do with using a better check yes. I think it might be a good idea to ask Stephane to have the technical team look into improving it. -Chieftain Alex 11:48, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

I'll be continuing the wiki spring cleaning tomorrow. Konig 22:30, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

you're a dick and I shouldn't have let you tag them all :p please don't bother tagging them, if I feel like doing the orphaned gallery images I can sort through orphaned myself thx. I won't delete them until I work out how to get one click deletion working. -Chieftain Alex 22:31, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
I only started going through because I saw that they've been sitting there for ages and wanted to give those who have almighty deletion powers a prod. There's probably a good 500+ more that are delete-worthy. Though I'm focusing on the former armor gallery images that have been sitting there for years (seriously, that's kind of silly). Konig 22:43, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
I counted about 1500 and got bored >_> -Chieftain Alex 23:01, 8 April 2013 (UTC)
hah. I got help with the .js and managed to get upto 23 files deleted per minute :D -Chieftain Alex 23:11, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

Wilderness of Bahdza/Map

Could you add Scratcher to that map (its location is indicated in File:Scratcher map.jpg and File:Population Control.jpg)? It currently states Scratcher spawns instead of Screecher prior to completion of Destroy the Harpies, which is incorrect. --Silver Edge 07:58, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

Rofl

That is all sir. Full range covers 3 states >.< (at least i try and stay on talk pages) Durp da durp 15:18, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

Yeah I really did bugger that up :P next time I'll check the edit and not just read "ugg" from the summary and assume its an uggboots robot :/ apologies. -Chieftain Alex 15:25, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
Ahh but was it good for a lul? At least the wiki isn't doing that internal IP thing still. (Ok... so maybe i do act trollish sometimes but not flaming other ppl... or messing w/ mainspace)Durp da durp 15:50, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
Looking at the user creation logs i can see why u just deleted. Looking thru the last 100 without seeing IP's i'm guessing 3 bots based on similar name schemes. The long names on a longer timed one and the Letter/number and Letter/Letter on similar patterns. Omg i never knew soooo many ppl r just starting to play GW and join the wikiz. It sux u can't block based on a naming scheme. I script nothing, sure i'm kinda brainless but not liek those. Durp da durp 18:14, 9 April 2013 (UTC)

"bets on same as last year?"

I hope not. While the 7th year present included all previous year's purple, gold, and green minis, they also included 5 previously exlusive minis. There's still some of those that can be slapped into the coding, leaving them to still be rare but not wtfomglulzbbq rare. I'm guessing this: 4th-6th purple, gold, and green (yes tonics as well) plus Longhair Yeti, Grawl, Island Guardian, Panda or one of the Promotional golds, and Kanaxai. Let's see how close I get! :D Konig 01:45, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

gift card = get the same stuff you've had before! amazing prediction. -Chieftain Alex 09:01, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
I'll be that one player who walks away with another Mini Hydra, whether it's included in the actual loot table or not. :P - Infinite - talk 10:36, 16 April 2013 (UTC)
Oh god xD my characters aren't even year 7... can't wait for all the duplicate purples. -Chieftain Alex 10:37, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Augury Rock

Concerning this edit, I tried it and it doesn't seem to work. The Doppelganger can still hit with his spear while my character is standing behind there and I can also hit the Doppelganger with ranged weapons from there. --Silver Edge 06:42, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

hmm I apologise, I was sure that the barrier saves my character from being bowed to death. Feel free to remove as I'm sure your testing beats my memory of it... -Chieftain Alex 07:29, 18 April 2013 (UTC)
edit; must have been that the doppelganger locked onto my pet and not the wall. *embarassed* :p -Chieftain Alex 10:58, 18 April 2013 (UTC)

NPC infobox

Can you edit Template:NPC infobox, so it doesn't categorize NPC pages into the following special event categories if the affiliation parameter matches the name of these categories: Category:Canthan New Year, Category:Dragon Festival, Category:Halloween, and Category:Wintersday. For example, the affiliation of Candy Corn Tyrant is entered as Halloween, which categorizes it into Category:Halloween, but it already appears in the more appropriate Category:Halloween NPCs. Thanks. --Silver Edge 08:37, 22 April 2013 (UTC)

Could make it so that it auto-categorizes to the NPC cats, so that we don't have to manually do them, too. Konig 21:44, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Adding {{{affiliation}}}_NPCs wouldn't quite work, since the Dwayna Vs Grenth NPCs would wrongly categorise since their affiliation is correctly marked as Wintersday. -Chieftain Alex 21:45, 22 April 2013 (UTC)
Prior to the change to the infobox, I went to each of the NPC pages categorized in those four aforementioned special event categories and I categorized them if they were neither in a special event NPC category (Category:<Special event name> NPCs) nor in a sub-category of that special event NPC category. --Silver Edge 01:41, 23 April 2013 (UTC)

Glad to See You

I was like reading that chat message and thinking, "Who is that?" LoL. I was assisting the player Jmann with his game he just purchased less than 24 hours ago. It is great to know people are still buying the game. My son purchased the EotN for me off Amazon and got himself the Hourglass Staff from there as well. I have no clue as why he wanted it but he did. Guild Wars Forever! --Wendy Black 15:19, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

:D I thought it was hilarious seeing a name in local chat that I actually recognised for once! Did I over-hear correctly that there is some kind of trade restriction for new players preventing the gift of cloth for shing jea armor? I didn't know that before today.. -Chieftain Alex 16:13, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
Ah. "you cannot trade with other players until your account is at least 24 hours old." Trade#Trading_with_other_players. >_> still I'm sure he'll be about more than a day! Chieftain Alex 16:14, 24 April 2013 (UTC)
I agree, kind of dumb rule, I understand the trade restriction on trial accounts, but anything 24 hours or less and you are blocked from sharing the wealth. All he needed was 1 cloth for some noob armor. I gave him a run out to the Crimson Skulls (Port Kaimu) and showed him how to find cloth in a drop. We bumped into the boss so he was introduced to that factor. I made him a guild officer so he can hook up with me tomorrow and I will toss him some decent daggers. I don't expect people to hang in guilds very long these days, most are here getting the HoM points for GW2 or get into some 100+ member guild. One player last week told me not to make him an officer. I explained, that if he stays, but remains inactive for over a month, I just demote them to member. It is not like they can take control of my guild. The Imaginary Friends is a guild for the homeless player to relax. --Wendy Black 16:44, 24 April 2013 (UTC)

Projecy: Categories

Quartermaster

Would a collector-subcategory Category:Quartermaster be useful for grouping all relevant collectors, or should I just use Category:Reward trophy collectors? Example: Scribes --Falconeye 08:50, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

I don't think its necessary to discriminate between collectors of trophies and of reward trophies. Its fine as it is imo. Chieftain Alex 11:33, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
For that matter, do we even need Category: Scribes? We sure as hell don't need those three sub-cats, since they're the same exact 4 NPCs in each. Konig 17:57, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
Maybe quartermaster should be treated as subcategory, similar to Armor collectors? --Falconeye 03:52, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Presearing Wildlife

  1. Due to crusade against redundancies: Is possible to rename and/or merge several categories? Example: Category:Has costume and festival hat makers... Category:Has historian and scribes
  2. Is it possible to category-move to "Ascalon (pre-Searing) wildlife"; without having to tag every NPC's affiliation as such? --Falconeye 16:53, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
I've already done the second point, I've got no problem with pages going from "Presearing" to "Ascalon (pre-Searing)". The second one is more complicated and I've gotta work on my project. -Chieftain Alex 17:19, 28 April 2013 (UTC)
"Category:Has costume and festival hat makers" wouldn't work, since a festival hat maker can appear in a guild hall while a costume maker cannot, and a costume maker appears in Great Temple of Balthazar while a festival hat maker doesn't. --Silver Edge 05:27, 29 April 2013 (UTC)
Ok, I'll just fill in any missing/outdated cats; then afterwards, tackling any redundancies that may result should be easier. --Falconeye 05:33, 29 April 2013 (UTC)

Has NPC Service

As an initial test-bed, Great Temple of Balthazar did not (and still does not) properly categorize half of its listed service NPCs. Exactly how many "NPCs organized by service" types should be represented by "Services arranged by location"? Should "Has NPC service" follow its own cat-method, where applicable, especially when a town/outpost has multiple NPCs tagged as the same service NPC-type, but cleary distinct from each other (has example: Category:Has Priest of Balthazar)? --Falconeye 03:52, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

Profession trainers

Can someone re-examine the purpose of this category/sub-categories, and how it relates to skill trainers & quest giver service NPCs? I'm currently at a loss, and am close to treating P-trainers as sub-cat of Skill trainers. --Falconeye 22:49, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

Thin ice

I think that Falconeye (and to a lesser extent, Konig) will probably be watching this. It has been brought up that there have been some fairly "dippy" category edits going on recently. Just beware, anyone requiring other users to revert their category structure changes and additions of categories to random pages may have to take a non-voluntary break for a bit. -Chieftain Alex 21:40, 4 May 2013 (UTC)

Dunno what you mean by the word "dippy" but for me, I'm just trying to streamline things since rather than a category tree, the areas I'm editing is a category cobweb. A messy one at that. But that's also why I gave a few day's break between my first major edits and my second/third major edits of yesterday/today. Konig 21:52, 4 May 2013 (UTC)
What did I screw up this time? ^_^ --Falconeye (talk) 05:34, 10 May 2013 (UTC)

Sitenotice

RE this edit: The wrong sitenotice extension was imported here, so that’s why it looks like that here. They are working on it, so no need to fix anything. poke | talk 14:15, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

Yeah I didn't intend to inflict my css on anyone else, but thats good news. iirc pvxwiki uses the same 20% spaced sitenotice, so I could use the css there another time. -Chieftain Alex 15:13, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

Feedback: Question

  1. Is it possible for additional sub-categories? (For example, adding [Skills > skill type > skill subtype], or [PvE > minigames].) More precised/alternative categories would be most appreciated by active contributors (including me).
  2. Considering Feedback-portal is 5+ years old (and GW2 nearly a year old), is it possible to create a "community promoted/featured"-template and/or "cleanup required"-template? With Live-Teams' increased restraints, the former template should help draw attention "the best throughout-creative suggestions and/or most likely to be implemented and/or this should have been done yesterday" for both Anet and other contributors. The latter would be a "janitorial-template" for any incomplete/incoherent or otherwise questionable articles that may not be worth archiving under "resolved"; this may help the community decide if these have merit for improvements or they are "candidates for deletion".
  3. If none of the above are possible and/or desirable, then do feedback-contributors have the discretion of removing them from consideration via the "resolved"-template (as others have done so)? Majority of previous contributors are likely never bother to clean-up/resolve/delete their increasingly outdated feedback:article.
--Falconeye (talk) 06:17, 10 May 2013 (UTC)
  1. ArenaNet employees are very unlikely to read the feedback space, this has always been true, and this is only more true post GW2 release, when there isn't really a GW-new-content team anymore. I'm not going to spend any time changing feedback templates and categories.
  2. Maintenance templates aren't a good idea, as the suggestions would never be fixed. If a suggestion is like "make everything more fun" - i.e. vague with no actual suggestion, then it could be ok to tag it for deletion.
  3. Adding the "resolved" marker is ok if you justify why the suggestion is outdated and thus no longer relevant in the edit summary. e.g.
    Just being old but still being relevant isn't a good reason.

Party Invite

Alex, I would like to invite you to a party in Blacktide Den at 1AM EST/10PM PST Sunday May 12th. Some of us are going to hang there awhile and chat. Lady Edana (DJ from gw-en.com) will be hosting her show there. I hope this isn't too last minute for you. I would love a chance to meet and swap some war stories. --Wendy Black 06:52, 11 May 2013 (UTC)

regretably I have two extremely important coursework deadlines this week and need to work the entire weekend. :/ -Chieftain Alex 09:25, 11 May 2013 (UTC)
Your next chance is the 31st, Friday at 10PM EST in presearing Ascalon. Let me guess no presearing character? LoL --Wendy Black 07:33, 12 May 2013 (UTC)
wierd, second person in a week to ask if I had a pre char or not, but no, 9 characters was enough + I like my characters too much to delete them to travel to pre. (even my para) -Chieftain Alex 09:53, 14 May 2013 (UTC)
Just having fun with you Chief, I don't expect anyone to delete characters just to attend a presearing party. What I find odd, my officer Simon of Aragon, has four or five empty slots and played for over a year now. I asked him how he expects to play the game with only a scant handful of characters. He keeps telling me that he is far too busy working on his Phd to play that many. (~_~) --Wendy Black 01:55, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

Bot request

Idk who here can run bots, but I think I've seen you do such once a while back. I was wondering if you - or someone you know who run bots - can have the manually placed [[Category:Landmarks]] removed from the articles within Category:Landmarks? I would but its over 200 articles and that's just bleh to do (though if such a bot isn't ran by the time I return to a desktop, I can easily do such, even if tedious). I just added a line in {{Locations infobox}} to automatically do that - I believe it wasn't before due to the whole separation-by-campaign of autocategorizations before. (Edit: Ah, come to think of it, there are a couple landmark articles which utilize the NPC or interactive object infobox, since the two are one and the same. So best watch out for those... guess manually doing this would be better? Though I think there's only 3 such situations - The Falls (NPC), Mourning Veil Falls (landmark), and Healing Spring (object) only come to mind). Konig 03:10, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

ADD: Sacred Altar, Fountain of Truth, and more... --Falconeye (talk) 04:07, 16 May 2013 (UTC)
While I've not ever operated a bot, I could give it a shot. I think I can work out how to use AWB to apply the replacement/removal of text for a bunch of pages (I've downloaded it certainly :p). The tricky bit for me would be creating a list of pages with {{location infobox}} set to type = Landmark AND finding the term "Category:Landmarks", since my regexp is weak. (summary, if we can work out how to create a DPL list of the pages that meet those requirements, sure I can do it.. something along the lines of
{{#dpl: uses = Template:Location infobox | includematch = Category:Landmarks¦type \= Landmark }}
-Chieftain Alex 00:25, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
Even easier.. I don't have to use regexp and can apply an if statement in AWB before using find and replace. This would be easy to do. e.g. It is slow when operating it on a non-bot account because you have to wait to press save, and I really don't want to knacker my hands doing it ^. Plus I'd end up spamming our recent changes even more than the phantom spambot accounts.. perhaps I should ask for botting rights + make a new account for it. (I hear there is a button you can press when you have bot rights and it just blasts them all.. as long as you've set up the replace correctly! :D )-Chieftain Alex 21:50, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
Derp. Noticed after I uploaded that image that there is a bot tab which can be used, but either way most of the articles need a bit of manual cleaning anyway. I can do this, but I'd still want bot rights. gotta figure out how to delete multiple empty picture parameters, and leave the top one if they're all present ^_^ -Chieftain Alex 22:17, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
Done. (User:AWB Alex) -Chieftain Alex 23:56, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

GW2 concept art

I hope you realize that File:"Charr Land" concept art.jpg‎ and File:"Wraith Lord" concept art.jpg‎ are only used by Falconeye for a pointless thing (and the second also being used for something irrelevant to the image, since Falconeye doesn't seem to get that it's not related in any way whatsoever to Dhuum). File:"Snow Battle" concept art.jpg is the same - it's just used in two userspaces which contains a lot of images with no purpose other than being galleries of gods-know-what. That's why I tagged them for deletion, and to help prevent Falconeye from adding them onto irrelevant articles. In other words, the cases of "used by users" is almost solely done by Falconeye in a pointless screenshot gallery. Oh, and both articles by Falconeye were created post-tagging, in an attempt to keep images which hold no real purpose or use on this wiki at all. Konig 14:22, 19 May 2013 (UTC)

is it my role to judge whether another user's image use is "unrelated" or not? Its not a copyvio or unused. -Chieftain Alex 19:16, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
Perhaps it's just how I've gotten tired of Falconeye continuously relating the concept art for gw2:Lich Form to being Dhuum... but the use of the Charr Land and Snow Battle are unnecessary and only exist to have an easy access of the images. Konig 20:56, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
why don't you just tag it for move, or move it yourself to his namespace? no point deleting it if it's in use, plenty of people have lots of retarded pictures in personal namespace, having actually gw-related pictures there doesnt seem to be a problem -Auron 03:18, 20 May 2013 (UTC)
Uhm, it’s concept art. Why even discuss if they are used or not? The ArenaNet image tag does include the image itself for reason (so it does not show up as unused even if it is). Concept art is supposed to stay on the wiki even if there is no current use. poke | talk 09:58, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
I see now: It’s GW2 concept art, huh? (The topic title should have given me a hint). Then just move the files to have a “GW2” prefix or something, or move to user naming. No need to delete something when it’s actually still used. Deleting an image does not free up any space, so there is no point in hunting images that are actually still used—for whatever reason. poke | talk 10:02, 21 May 2013 (UTC)
Thing is, the sole usage of two of them is Falconeye putting them on a screenshot sandbox page asking in the talk page "Anyone want to keep and/or re-purpose the other screenshots? Are there any worth keeping?" and they were added to said sandbox page after I tagged them. In other words, they're not actually being used. They're being 'used' in the manner of someone using them to ask if they should be used. Konig 21:22, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

Help with a template

How would I get rid of the whitespace caused by {{Kurzick-only service NPC dialogue}} at the end of the Dialogue section on pages such as Zytka? --Silver Edge 04:32, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

It was because the switch statement, possibly not displaying, was on the line after the text. I've remedied it by moving it up to the preceding line and put an invisible open-close span at the end of the last visible text line to avoid the switch statement removing newlines. easy :p -Chieftain Alex 07:25, 25 May 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I just tried that on {{Merchant or skill trainer in Luxon-controllable Echovald Forest outpost dialogue}} and it didn't seem to work (e.g. on Ruben). --Silver Edge 07:35, 25 May 2013 (UTC)
^ close but switch statement wasn't on the same line as {{dialogue needed}} :) -Chieftain Alex 07:38, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

interesting

that abusefilter goes mad banning bot accounts now that we've disabled account creation. is that just the botter changing things up? -Auron 13:41, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

Its catching up with blocking the accounts created before the spam account wall went up. 76, 51, 16, 14, {4 incomplete dataset} - it looks like the number of abusefilter blocks will go down over time, but you're right there was an awful lot of filter blocks after account creation stopped. My guess would be that the botters have noticed their attempts failing, and they're logging into old accounts. -_- I'm on holiday but I might spend an hour or so permablocking a bunch of filter-blocked bots. -Chieftain Alex 09:21, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
ngrplz, if you're on holiday then relax :p -Auron 10:11, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
What do you know what Brits do in order to relax? Or are them islanders all the same? ;-P Steve1 (talk) 22:10, 5 June 2013 (UTC)
Dunno, I read books at a stupidly fast speed hen I'm on holiday, 554 pages in a day yesterday ;)
Also perhaps I went slightly overkill on infinite blocking previously 3-day filtered edits. -Chieftain Alex 15:13, 10 June 2013 (UTC)

Urn of Althea's Ashes

For some reason Urn of Althea's Ashes isn't auto-categorized into Category:Quest items by {{Item infobox}} and I couldn't figure out why. --Silver Edge 22:12, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

Hmm my apologies, apparently I broke all of the categorization by {{item infobox}} without noticing (!) when I rearranged the text on the template page (wasn't broken before so shouldn't have touched I guess). I probably left an html arrow open somewhere :( Thanks for bringing this up :P -Chieftain Alex 23:11, 11 June 2013 (UTC)

Template:Item infobox

It seems {{item infobox}} no longer categorizes miniature pages into Category:Common miniatures, Category:Uncommon miniatures, Category:Rare miniatures, and Category:Unique miniatures. --Silver Edge 05:10, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

I think I fixed it with this edit. --Silver Edge 21:43, 21 September 2013 (UTC)

Bonus Mission Pack skill templates

Based on Talk:Turai Ossa (disguise)#Attributes, could you help me create a {{gr}} and {{skill progression}} template for use on Bonus Mission Pack disguise skill pages? Perhaps have the same parameters with an additional parameter (e.g. "rank") for the attribute rank of the disguise, which will cause it to display only that attribute rank and the two adjacent attribute ranks (similar to the example I linked to above); e.g. if "14" is entered into that parameter, only the attribute ranks of 13, 14, 15 will display. Would it be better to create new templates or to alter {{gr}} and {{skill progression}}? --Silver Edge 21:16, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

Its fairly trivial to create new templates, so I've done so. Hopefully these are adequate for our needs. I've tested it at Healing Signet (Turai Ossa).
-Chieftain Alex 21:55, 13 September 2013 (UTC)
Thanks. I forgot one thing. Some skills linked to an attribute can't get +1 (e.g. Turai's Shield requires Tactics, so Endure Pain (Turai Ossa) can't get +1 in Strength from "Master of My Domain"), so could you add a parameter to {{Skill progression Bonus Mission Pack}} where if it is set to "y" the +1 attribute rank won't will display? {{Gr Bonus Mission Pack}} doesn't need to be changed since we can just use {{Gr2}}. --Silver Edge 08:50, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
