Answers to various questions

Hello everyone,

To help me keep my thoughts focused into one main status area, I've created a little mini-journal to give me a spot to drop quick status updates about what I'm up to. Image:UserEmilyDiehlGrin.gif

Even though I've been a bit slower to respond, please feel free to continue to send me questions and comments as usual!

As a general update, here's some wiki stuff that may be of interest to you!

Image Contributions
I'm still working on renders when I have spare time! If there are any that require my attention as soon as possible, please don't hesitate to point them out to me on this talk page. For the rest, I'll keep chugging along.
Other Projects
I've had to bump a few of my projects onto my main projects page. I haven't forgotten about any of them, but I've had to shift priorities a bit for some of the bigger ones. If there is anything that you guys really need pulled from that list, just let me know. I'll continue chipping at this stuff as I have free time.
Bugs and Questions
We've managed to net Mike and his team for the wiki, so if you have bugs to report, he's your man!
Trivia
As always, if you guys have questions about trivia references, don't be scared to ask me to confirm or deny them. We know you guys put a lot of thought into figuring out the obscurities, so we don't mind helping out if you get stuck.
It's been a bit tougher to get trivia answers lately because all teams are really heavily focused on GW2 (mine included). I send regular emails to the team containing questions, and I still try to follow-up on the requests that you all have, but sometimes response times are a little slower than they used to be. I just wanted to let you all know that I'm not ignoring any questions, and I will keep asking folks periodically until I get responses. Thanks for understanding :)

[edit] It's Live

Thank You so much for how active you remained in setting this up and addressing timely questions ...even while your offices kept getting nailed with flu bugs and whatever else. (I just picture Anet's like this huge adult-sized Kindergarten room b/c everyone's gotten sick a couple times this year). --ilrimage:User_ilr_deprav.png 20:07, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

No problem Ilr :) I'm glad the space is finally open and ready! And yeah, when the flu goes around the office, it GOES AROUND. I think it's because we have a self contained ventilation system, so germs just circle. People that are more susceptible to getting sick often get hit multiple times every season. Unfortunately, I'm one of the germ magnets so I fall under that category. =P --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 21:13, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
I can see it now...GW2's production comes to a hault due to Swine Flu epidemic. ^^" Katherinezoltin 01:08, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Render request

Hi Emily, could I request a render for the most popular NPC page on the site, currently being Nicholas the Traveler with nearly 1.4 million views to date :) he would certainly get a lot of attention! --LemmingImage:User Lemming64 sigicon.png 23:51, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Maybe a render of Professor Yakkington and Nicholas Sandford too?. Simzy 14:39, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
Hiya guys! I am still having issues with Yak's model, so I'm unable to cap him right now. I will send an email over to the artists and see if we can figure out what's going on with him. I'll make a post it note to follow up on this :) --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:40, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] GW:EN armor renders - full views

Heya, I'm just wondering, are the armor renders for front/back/sides for GW:EN armors in the pipeline anytime soon? Just that the ones for all the rest of the campaigns have been finished and GW:EN has been around a while now... Jennalee 10:48, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

I came here to ask the same thing. ^_^ Image:User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 15:05, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
Oh, I thought I finished all of the armor. Oops...sorry! Yeah, I will try to block out a bit of time to get those done. I've been swamped lately, so I haven't had a chance to look at renders for a while :( Thanks for the heads up! --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:38, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
By the way, on Elite Imperial male ritualist page, left side image is wrong. It's an image of basic Imperial armor. - J.P.FeedbackTalk 19:02, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
Yay, good to hear :) Jennalee 04:22, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Testing AlternativeUserTalk extension

If everything works fine you should get the notice :) poke | talk 19:16, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

I did! Awesome work, Poke! Thanks! :) --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:20, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
I hope this makes everyone happy :D -- Wyn talk 19:31, 28 September 2009 (UTC)
Because Emily doesn't have the time to post it right now: Tomorrow's maintenance will include an upgrade to MediaWiki 1.15.1 on both GWW and GW2W. poke | talk 20:47, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] MediaWiki 1.15.1 Upgrade

Hi guys! Tomorrow morning we'll be upgrading both the GWW and the GW2W to MediaWiki version 1.15.1. We'll also be installing the final pending RFTAs and making sure that all extensions are identical and up-to-date on both wikis. I'll be posting a notice on the website about this, but I wanted to give ya'll an advanced heads up anyways! Thanks :) --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:48, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

Awesome :). Send Kudos to the IT team for me :D. --Dominator Matrix 06:17, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
Will do! And you guys know the drill...if anything looks broken after the upgrade, just let me know so I can pass it along. :) --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:36, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
Just curious... all the work and meeting you have all + playing on the wrong side of AION (you are asmodean right?) When do you sleep? If you don't sleep, how do you manage it?  :P Anyways, you guys are awesome, keep it up! --198.16.10.9 19:37, 29 September 2009 (UTC) *edit* sorry, didn't notice I wasn't logged on --Nekki 19:38, 29 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] GuildWiki

Someone has uploaded your user page to GuildWiki (User:LuckySle7n) - also incorporating images from your user page. Unless this is you (I have strong doubts that it is, especially with the user name) I'll delete the page, as GuildWiki uses a different copyright licence to the official wiki, but I just want to make sure that this isn't you before hand. Thanks for your time RT | Talk 19:39, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Nope, that's not me! Thanks for catching that, RT. --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:43, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
Alright, deleted - I'll notify the user that uploaded the images and text of this page RandomTime 19:48, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
nah just wanne to borrow the setup to remove your stuff out it later cause i'm not a star in wiki page creating dint know that i was against the rules i will setup a other theme my bad for the problems ^^.[LuckySle7en Talk] 22:43, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

[edit] missing extensions

Hi Emily, it seems a couple of extensions have been uninstalled/gone missing. GWW needs the User Merge and Delete and AlternativeUserTalk extensions. It seems we might also need InputBox here as well; comparing the two wikis' version pages, it seems GW2W has it but GWW doesn't. However, it's not on the GWW:RFTA#Installed requests list, so I'm not sure if GWW had it before or if we (still?) want it.

GW2W just needs ListTransclusions. RenameUser could be uninstalled on GW2W since it didn't work properly (it's been uninstalled here purposely, I think). Thanks, sorry for all the requests :/. --pling  15:00, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

:o i can has inkscape too? —Jette 15:14, 1 October 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads up about this Pling :) Everything should be fixed up now, so let me know if anything is still missing. --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:45, 5 October 2009 (UTC)
Great, thanks Emily, looks fine :D -- pling 20:14, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Follow Up

Hey Emily, I just wanted to ask you if you ever got a chance to talk to the team(s) about the possibility of a page in the feedback space where ANet staff/team(s) could ask specific questions for which they wanted community feedback. I realize things got a little crazy right after I made the suggestion, so no worries if it fell through the cracks, but I just thought I would ask. (Satanael | talk) 21:22, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Heya Satanael! Yep, I brought this up a while back and folks agreed that it could be useful. Let me re-open the discussion to figure out details like how much use it would get and how it could be used. I'll let you know what I learn. --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 23:59, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
Great, thanks Emily! In the mean time, I'll see if I can't start a little dicussion about how best to organize it. I don't think it will be very complicated to do, but I suppose it will also depend a little bit about how you guys want to handle it, so let me know how the discussion goes. (Satanael | talk) 04:23, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
If the team is concerned with having to slog through pages of responses, does the wiki system have a voting function like forums do so that there could be a general vote on topics, then a separate page for the discussion? Terryn Deathward 16:32, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
Not really, but this is being discussed in more detail here. -- FreedomBound 16:35, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Sorry to tell you this...

... and make you a sad panda, but that won't work the way you wanted :( When new section's are added, they are added at the very bottom of the page, so nobody will see your note. But I'll think about a possible solution for you :) poke | talk 06:06, 8 October 2009 (UTC)

I'm setting up a mediawiki using either my PC or this junky one from when Windows 95 was considered advanced technology that I can use as a personal notebook. As the only person I come anything close to being acquainted with who runs one of these things, do you have any advice? –Jette 21:45, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Non-English Guild Wars 2 Wikis

Hi Emily. I sent you an e-mail one and a half month ago and would really like to see it answered. The German GuildWiki team needs a clear statement from ArenaNet, because we want one German Guild Wars 2 Wiki soon — neither two nor zero wikis in some months. --numma_cway 21:40, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, it would have been really great to get at least something as a response here :) --Tera 23:40, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] French Wiki

Hello, Emily, I'm Boungawa, one of the administrators of the main French Wiki, I would have liked to know if, now that almost all articles exist on our wiki, it could become the French official Wiki with the IG links (F1) which clock on, for the France, this one. Thanks for your answer. - Boungawa 14:14, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

Hey, this is not an official answer, but I'll try to answer it to give you an idea about it.
The primary reason why GWW was created from scratch was because the previous wiki, GuildWiki, had an incompatible license that would make it impossible to use the content in-game. To make that possible, ArenaNet had to start with a new license that would allow them to use the content in-game. The french GuildWiki, similar to the original english GuildWiki, uses CC-BY-NC-SA. While that makes both wikis compatible with each other (so that you could use content from GuildWiki and translate it for example), it is incompatible to this wiki's GFDL and as such incompatible with the in-game linking.
Originally, the official Guild Wars Wiki was created with the option to have multiple different languages; those wikis in other languages actually even were accessible, however all were shut down after some months. As such it is unlikely that ArenaNet will open those official wikis in other languages again, especially as everybody would need to begin from scratch again (because of the license); and it would require a very long time to actually get to a level of information similar to GWW now, or to the "unofficial" wikis in other languages that already exist now. And with GW2 coming, people will probably lose interest in maintaining an official but very incomplete wiki when there are unofficial but complete wikis about the same old game already. poke | talk 10:52, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
ArenaNet has also stated that with the reduction of staff in the community relations team, there isn't enough ArenaNet staff to support other language wikis. -- Wyn talk 11:01, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
Ok Thanks a lot for your answer ! :D --Boungawa 15:51, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Halloween 2009

In the upper right box, the name of an elonian outpost ist spelled wrong. It reads "Kodlanu Hamlet" and not "Kodlonu Hamlet". Hope you can fix it in time ;) Ɲoɕʈɋɽɕɧ 09:20, 21 October 2009 (UTC)

Thanks Noctarch :) I fixed it and will push it live shortly. For some reason my brain always flips those letters XD --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:35, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] French GW www, dead link

Hi Emily,

I'm not sure if you're the right person to ask for fixing this problem, but I thought I'd start here. There's a dead link "Guild Paradise" in the list of French GW fansites:

http://fr.guildwars.com/community/category/listing/fansites/

Thanks!

Fril Estelin

Heya Fril! Yep, I can take care of this. Thanks for pointing it out! I'll fix it tonight :) --Image:UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 02:50, 29 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Guild hall image request

Hi Em! Is it possible to get a high res bird's eye view of the guild hall maps? I would like to do NPC placement images to identify where the henchmen and guild hall npc's are located now, but the only images I can find are so low res they just look bad. Thanks in advance! -- Wyn talk 10:00, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

i don't know if Linsey is still doing it but it might want to wait because of her project to make the npc placement in guild halls better. seen here as you i am sure already know.- Zesbeer 10:38, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
Pretty sure the current placement is where they're going to stay, otherwise why would they have put them there in the first place? That project was to fix the old static, all in a row placement, and make it more like it is now. -- FreedomBound 12:10, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
my understanding of that project is that she was going to change the locations of the npcs like the merchant because in some of the halls they are really out of the way and not convent.- Zesbeer 20:23, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, I was thinking of only the new henchmen, didn't realize Wyn wanted to document the existing NPCs, too. -- FreedomBound 12:51, 31 October 2009 (UTC)
I can do it. It takes me like 5 seconds to find the addresses nowadays. Unfortunately, because of the state of the economy, I must demand payment for this service in the form of more halloween crap. Which hall would you like done first, though? –Jette 07:03, 2 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Website

Hey there, the screenshots link under the "hot links" of the players page is broken. Also, on the fansite page, Crossing Tyria is dead and "Guild Wars @ GameAmp" seems now irrelevant. — PmaN 03:37, 20 November 2009 (UTC)

International copyright. It's getting stricter everyday. NuVII 14:42, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
I think I'm the only non-commercial PC owner in my town, or even region, with a legitimate copy of Windows that can run an update and not black out, and you couldn't find a legit CD or DVD if it had a bounty on it. (I live in Western Ukraine right now.) But hey, maybe they can do something about that wallpaper. :P Image:User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 15:05, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
The key bit is "non-commercial". Copyright law is much stricter when it comes to making a profit. NuVII 15:42, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
Small correction: the only people that must have legit software are banks that perform international financial transactions and thus must have all latest updates and security and be compatible with their international partners. Hospitals, Post Offices and Police are laughable in that regard, all their records are kept on paper, STILL. Pretty much anything can be bought and bribed, but corruption here is another issue, there's plenty of info online about that if you're curious. Also, I browsed that website, and found quite a few images that I know for a fact are copyrighted (such as artwork of Nene Thomas). They're not selling it, so I dunno if international copyright laws apply here. Image:User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 16:18, 27 November 2009 (UTC)
