What's this page all about?

As many of you may have already noticed, my talk page gets out of hand rather quickly. I dislike archiving questions before they are adequately answered, but there are often times when I can't really finish answering a topic until I hear back from someone else. When this happens, the only thing I can do is to let you guys know that I've passed the question along, and then the topic sits.

This doesn't help me keep my page tidy, and it makes it confusing for you guys to know what topics I'm aware of and which ones I've forgotten about (I try not to forget stuff, and I'm pretty good at not, but I'm only human so it happens from time to time...hehe).

I think this section will help with this issue. If there are questions that are waiting on responses from other folks, I'll move them here after I've passed them along the line. That way, you guys will know for sure if I've actually read something, and I'll have a tidier talk page in the process. It will also help me to clearly see topics that have been sitting and waiting for long periods of time so I can follow-up on them again.

Help me keep this page tidy by:

  • Posting new questions on my talk page. This page should be used only for topics that I've already passed along. If you've got follow-up points to an existing topic, though, feel free to add them to the discussion here.
  • Please don't move items on and off of this page for me. Since I'm using this as a methodical way to keep track of things, having stuff pop on and off the page will break my brain and make me (and my team) super sad. User Emily Diehl Blush.gif

Hopefully, this makes things a bit more manageable for me and makes it simpler for you guys to get questions seen and answered faster. Let me know if you have any suggestions on the process as time goes on!

Thanks :)

Wiki question limbo[edit]

Update: Reopening these discussions by the end of the week --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 04:50, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Better late than never[edit]

I thought I should give you a heads up that we have changed the guild page policy to include a requirement of an English language summary on all foreign language pages. I know you have posted about allowing foreign language guild pages in the past, but from reading over those old posts what I saw was more of a concern for the way people were commenting on them rather than the actual need to have at least the basic information available to the entire community in English. We all realize that this is the wiki that the game links connect to, and therefore we need to allow the global presence which includes native languages, however, enforcing content on a page only a fraction of the community can read is difficult. I plan to monitor the guild namespace fairly closely and will do my best to see that all warnings or notices are done respectfully. We are also establishing a translation project to assist in getting the English summaries done on existing guild pages. I hope these changes will meet with your approval, and please feel free to speak up if you see any problems.--Wyn's Talk page Wyn 03:28, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the heads-up, Wyn. I've brought up the topic of looking into the details of creating multi-language wikis to our community folks in the past, so I'll make a note to send a follow-up email about it on Monday. Are there many guild pages that are not English (I assume so if this was made policy)? If so, are there specific languages that you're seeing a large influx of content from? --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 03:34, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
Well, we are working our way through the alphabet atm, but I see a lot of Russian, German, Dutch, and French pages. The tags are placing the pages into Category:Translation needed so if you wish to monitor the numbers as we get the tagging done, feel free.--Wyn's Talk page Wyn 03:41, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
Very cool! Having this hard data in-hand will really help us figure out the best thing to do for other languages. Thanks for doing this tagging. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 03:45, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
I was also thinking that if you need some numbers, we can also easily do DPL lists using the language variable in the guild infobox. It would give you much more accurate numbers of what languages are being used, since the tags we are currently placing are only for the purpose of getting translations on pages that are done completely in foreign languages, and will be removed as the translations are done. I believe the DPL lists could be done whenever you wish.--Wyn's Talk page Wyn 05:05, 9 August 2008 (UTC)

A favor...[edit]

Hi Emily. This is another of those huge request that we wiki users love to throw in your direction #^_^ Recently players have found, within the gw.dat file, a large list of Nightfall locations, together with a small description for (almost) all of them. A few are from places we already knew the name of, and most of those locations appear to be things found in the game but that have not been officially named. We were left in doubt if it would be better or not to add those names and descriptions to the articles where we think they belong...After some discussion, the community decided to try asking you for help.

The list of places found in the file, together with a tentative division by region and a guess at where they are found in-game, is here (I have wikified it for your convenience). We would like to ask the following:

  1. Would you (as in, Arena Net) allow us to post that information here on the wiki? It wasn't something released to us, just something found within the .dat file.
  2. Are those names "official" ones, or have they been discarded? For example, it's very easy to find where the Plaza of Art is; but is that place "officially" named Plaza of Art, and the name was just never mentioned in game, or has the name Plaza of Art been considered and then rejected?
  3. Assuming both questions above have favorable answers, do you, Emily, believe you would have time to look at the list itself and tell us if our speculations are right? It would be good to know if each place is where we think it is, so we may add those bits of information to the proper articles.
  4. Assuming the above question is accepted, would you also have time to correct the wrong speculations and to tell us where the places we couldn't find are, in game? That would allow us to finish this issue and place properly all information found about those landmarks.

I have a feeling that this belongs more to the writing team, since it feels like the kind of thing they have created, but since you're our main guru regarding wiki issues, and this is (kind of) a wiki issue...Thanks, even if you can't do any of it : ) Erasculio 23:26, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Emily is not allowed to comment on things that haven't been released or dug up in .Dat file. But i don't think it would be a problem if we added it ourself ~ KurdUser Kurd sig.png 08:42, 14 July 2008 (UTC)

but haven't they released it if its in the dat on are computers?75.165.124.46 06:00, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

I'll do some research about this, Erasculio. I don't know whether I can comment on anything in the .dat that hasn't been released into the game, but I can find more details on this grey area. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:02, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks : ) We all know you're realy really busy, so there's no need to hurry. Erasculio 20:50, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
Well hell, I paid 50$ for the game, and what do you know, one of the things I got with my 50$ was a .dat file. Sounds like that counts as releasing to me. 72.83.249.20 04:57, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
Actually, you payed 50$ for a license to use their game and create an account that they completely own and control (you just lease it out so you can connect to them), a manual so you know how to play, and a CD that downloads a .dat file that they also own and doesn't have anything like this on it. In fact, you "own" nothing but the box, the manual, those paper things, and the CD. You don't own your account, the .dat file, the .dat file's contents (especially not the one you have to -image to get all the hidden stuff viewable in a method that you're technically not supposed to do by the EULA), so yeah. You keep believing that pretty wrong and uninformed legal knowledge there Mr. 72.83.249.20 and I'll keep laughing. DarkNecrid 09:52, 10 August 2008 (UTC)
He didn't agree to anything until he plays the game. It's possible to view most if not all of this information without ever playing guild wars or "signing" anything. Thus he can view this information off of the dat which he got on the cd he owns without agreeing to anything. So keep laughing like an uninformed fool DarkNecrid. 122.104.165.13 15:22, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

(Reset indent) I am actually very interested to know what landmarks are in the game and which are not, and if any info, especially Arachnia, that is found in game can be considered legit for lore. Emily, if you can respond to anything about the landmarks and Arachnia found in the .dat file, I would be very thankful. --Azazel The Assassin 03:30, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Due to the fact that is been nearly 2 months since this has been answered...I assume A.Net will not/can not comment at all about "stuff found in the gw.dat". Paying any amount doesn't allow you to snoop around. In fact I'm sure its against the EULA due to the fact that its breaking the (some) non disclosure agreement. LF Brant[edit]

Hi Emily. Don't know if you have seen this already but we started a project for skill animations here. After visiting Brant's site I wonder if he can help us out if hes not too busy with GuildWars2. I know your currently swamped with wiki-projects and GuildWars2 so take it easy. No ones in a rush. ~ KurdUser Kurd sig.png 21:06, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

No, unfortunately Brant has moved onto another company, so he's not able to help out with any of this. I also don't believe that anyone here has the resources to cap animations of each skill effect, so I can't promise help for that large of a project right now :( --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 21:15, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
In my opinion it's not the difficulty of capturing the skills (which would be quite easy if you prepare it good - talking about me doing it); the problem is how to store the videos as the only possibility on the wiki so far is gif. If the wiki would support a good video format (having flv in mind), we could display self-captured videos much easier. The problem with that is just the encoding to flv, but I think even that would be somehow possible (seeing as how many people work in a good way with the gwdat explorer, it wouldn't be a problem to explain the encoding to flv and have the encode them and then upload them). However then there would be still be the problem of a missing upload function (which could be enabled for custom extensions I think) and the implementation of video player, that wouldn't be abused for "private" videos or even YouTube direct links... On a side note, are there any news about the skill sounds? :) poke | talk 21:35, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
The skill sounds are still on my plate, but they've taken a backseat to other tasks I have going on right now. I haven't forgotten about any of these projects, but my time right now is extremely limited :( --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:17, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

(RI) Hi Emily, sorry for bothering you again. The community has began capping the skill animations ourselves (that's something we can do, so there isn't really a need to use Arena Net resources for this) and converting them to .gif files - here are all Critical Strikes skills, for example. We have a small problem, though - the image files are big, beyond the limit of what we're normally allowed to upload to the wiki. Would it be viable to have the size limit temporarily increased so we may upload these files, or would that consume too much bandwidth and so be hurtful to the wiki? Erasculio 12:15, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

Testing a few of Erasculio's animations, it'll let me upload a 1.06 MB animation with a warning of "images over 150 kb is stressful on server", or something along the lines of that. I can't upload a 2.3 MB animation. But you probably already knew that... calor (talk) 16:03, 26 October 2008 (UTC)
Hi guys! Sorry about not seeing this earlier...it got tacked on to a topic that I thought I answered :) I'll go ahead and talk to the IT folks about increasing the upload limit, although I'd be concerned about increasing it to several megs a file. If we do that, it will open the floodgates for people uploading large, uncompressed shots, and that will eat up space and bandwidth like crazy. There might be another solution for special case things like animations, but I'd have to ponder it more and discuss it. Anyways, I'll send an email about it tonight :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 04:06, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Facet of Spirit & Grenth[edit]

Hey again Emily, I am curious about 2 things.

  • Since the Goddess of Truth was a Paragon, how come her Facet is a Dervish? and
  • Was Grenth human before defeating Dhuum and become a God?

hope you can answer these 2 questions for me. --MageUser MageMontu sig.pngMontu 18:44, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Heya Mage! I was told that "this is something for Tyrian scholars to debate. Certainly there are those who believe that all of the current gods were mortal humans at one time. It'd be up to the gods themselves to say for sure and they seem to be reticent on the matter". So, for your second question, you'll have to accept that as my answer 'cause it's all I'm going to get XD. I'll double check on the first part of it again in my next email, though. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:12, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

Hiya Mage! I sent this question out again today. I'll let you know what I find out. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:25, 26 June 2008 (UTC)
Okie Dokie --MageUser MageMontu sig.pngMontu 07:01, 28 June 2008 (UTC)
It's probably a design choice. Lore wise Dervishes and Paragons are closely knit anyways especially considering the culture the Elonians/real life counterparts have, so it's not too far of a stretch, especially since Dervishes worship all of the gods. Design wise, it's a lot easier to make a solo Dervish boss than it is a solo Paragon boss since a Paragon is a class dedicated to group oriented stuff. 71.113.171.141 06:52, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

The Seers of Twilight?[edit]

Hullo Emily :) I have been surfing around information about Abaddon when I got to a a redirect to The Seers of Twilight, there is no page for them but there are a few brief comments about them in their talk page, and the page that did existed was deleted. In the Abaddon talk page, right at the bottom you can find it. Since time has passed and no question,I thought of getting to this headon and ask you :) Can you provide an asnwer about them? Who they are... what did they do... how (and if) are they actuelly related to Abaddon... or even if they realy exist? Thanks in advance :) 89.139.165.32 19:42, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Every now and then, someone anonymously adds their own theories or fanfic to an article, like in these edits, since no one has been able to back it up with sources, I'm pretty sure the Seers of Twilight edits fall into this category. -- Gordon Ecker 06:21, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, theories and speculation generally belong on talk pages and user pages, and any theories or speculation within main namespace articles should be described as such, as they are in the Flameseeker Prophecies and Blood And Smoke articles, rather than being haphazardly mixed with canonical information as they were in the Abaddon and Tyria (world) articles. -- Gordon Ecker 09:53, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Could be a reference to many things and besides this skill was created when Nightfall was released, along time before Sweeney Todd.
Sweeny Todd was a penny serial (called The String of Pearls) back in the 1840s and was turned into a play in 1979. It's a bit older than the movie. --71.229.253.172 09:28, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

Weapon bonuses that didn't make it as inscriptions[edit]

There are at least two weapon bonuses that didn't make it into an inscription form - those are +15% -1 regen hp and +15% -1 regen energy weapon bonuses. I'm wondering if it's possible for you to find out why is that. Was it an oversight or a design decision? Many thanks!!! If you are unable to help, that's okay; or can tell me who to ask, that'd be appreciated. – User Barinthus Magical Compass.png Barinthus 01:56, 15 July 2008 (UTC)

Here are images of weapons with this mod. That appears strange to me as normally Anet tries to give PvP-characters all means a PvE-character could use in PvP. There are also no unique items with this mod. Maybe Anet just forgot them? It would be nice if they got added to the game. :) The fact that they only appear on weapons with inherent mod makes them to a Prophecies and Factions-only feature, and unattainable for weapon skins that are always inscribable. —ZerphatalkThe Improver 10:14, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
I'm not sure, guys. I'll send off an email to our items guy to check on this for you. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:03, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
These were in the game for quite some time but didn't make it to the J menu or any unique items, yes. I think they maybe retired the effect, which still sucks cause afaik you can get it in-game. Not much you can do I guess, there are still people with the old unconditionals (+15%/no drawback) from launch so...;) DarkNecrid 11:39, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
These weapons still drop, I've seen a decent amount (They're really rare, but they do drop) It's probably the same reason that +10 vs (monster type) never became inscriptions.70.181.72.216

Trivia Question[edit]

I'm going to be pretty specific here, so. :P

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Titans_get_plus_Health_regen_and_set_enemies_on_fire_each_time_he_is_hit.

Is this really the longest skill name? NOTE: I am including "skills" that we the players can't see, is there another hidden skill that is longer?

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Monster_doesn%27t_get_death_penalty

Is it true that all monsters are affected by this?

More importantly, how do these work? Do all monsters use these when spawned, we do not ever see them use them, but they have no activation time, could they be faster than "instant", and thus don't show up in the skill monitor? Could you generate a list of all these types of skills, if there are more?

I'm deeply interested in this! DarkNecrid 12:46, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

1: Yes, Titans...hit is the longest skill name in the game.
2: No.
3: They're probably static like Charm Animal. You get the bonus if it's on your skill bar. Check Guild_Wars_Wiki:Game_integration/Skills for a list of every skill in the game, monster, player, and other. ~Shard User Shard Sig Icon.png 01:25, 16 September 2008 (UTC)
That is probably the longest skill "name" though I would hardly call it that. The code demands that all skills have a text string associated with them (2 actually, regular and now concise) otherwise it won't compile. The way skills like these are used is on the species level as passive buffs (yes, they still take up a skill slot) which means the name is never seen. As such, a lot of old monster skills (before the days of .dat mining) are really just short descriptions of what they do since no one was really going to be looking at them. Even when they are being referenced in the species file, it's the ID not the name. - User Linsey Murdock sig.jpgLinsey talk 05:33, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

I suppose you're looking for Emily to confirm this, not if it existed, my mistake. From that pic, I'd say that's an old version of the opening cinematic. I haven't watched the opening too many times, but I don't recall that line being there. And the skip button looks more like older builds of the game (not that it can't be changed). Temple of Grenth in Lornar's Pass[edit]

I was recently in Lornar's Pass site seeing and I decided to check out the one of a kind Temple of Grenth just for something to do. It got me wondering, it seems a strange place to put an entrance to the Underworld - although I think it's totally awesome. Was this originally going to be the only entrance to the Underworld and players would have to fight their way here to enter it instead of entering from an outpost? How come there is no other similair "temple" other than Lyssa's ice cave in Mineral Springs? Why is there no FoW entrance in an explorable area? But there is. Lok at the following article. Temple of Balthazar. --MageUser MageMontu sig.pngMontu 16:30, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
Wow I played 3 years without knowing about that hahaha. I find it interesting you can't enter FoW there but you can enter UW from the other one. Maybe cause Lornar's Pass is a lvl 20 area and the falls... well isn't. 122.104.161.96 20:43, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
Incidentally, both The Falls and Lornar's Pass only allow 6 player teams from their closest outposts, unless you travel from ToA or Snake Dance respectively, and LP can be reached before The Falls when playing through the game... – josəph 00:45, 5 September 2008 (UTC)
Yes, the Grenth and Balthazar Temples were originally the only ways to get into UW and FoW. That was a very long time ago though, probably before they ended up being 6-man. - User Linsey Murdock sig.jpgLinsey talk 05:24, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

N.O.X. trivia[edit]

Is the skill "Divider Drive," used by N.O.X. after he reaches a certain health amount, a reference to the anime Gao Gai Gar's Dividing Driver? If so, are there not a number of other mech references throughout the new golem quests? Felix Omni 16:12, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

M.O.X. quote[edit]

What does the MOX quote "*PEACE MEANS HAV-ING A BIG-GER GOL-EM THAN THE OTH-ER GUY*" reference? We (GuildWiki) have got it listed as a reference to Iron Man, but Big Stick ideology has existed for ages, well before Iron Man. The MOX quote is almost an exact replica of Iron Man's, but the Iron Man quote is almost certainly a reference to big stick ideology. Thanks. --Shadowcrest 19:19, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure it's just the Big Stick! - User Linsey Murdock sig.jpgLinsey talk 05:22, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

Power Leak[edit]

Hey, so I know you're iffy on the .dat file stuff, but I was just quickly wondering if you could give us the backstory on the following implementation of Power Leak found inside it: If target foe is casting a spell, the spell is interrupted and target foe loses %str1% Energy. If target foe is not casting a spell, Power Leak instantly recharges.

Like I said, I know you're iffy, but some of us just want to know if this is a very early version of Power Leak that got scrapped, or something else (don't have to specify)! This type of early history on the skills is kind of interesting, so was wondering if you could dig anything up! Thanks either way. DarkNecrid 11:29, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Olaf[edit]

Hiya Emily! I was just wondering if you knew whether or not Olaf Olafson is a reference to former Sony Electronic Publishing Company President Ólafur Jóhann Ólafsson (a.k.a. Olaf Olafsson). If not that is quite a coincidence since he is only one letter away from having his name. --Shadowphoenix Happy Halloween 03:36, 7 November 2008 (UTC)

Olaf always makes me think of Olaf from Rock N Roll Racing (which was taken from Olaf in The Lost Vikings). To this day, the words "Olaf unleashes hot fury" still ring in my ears every time I see the name. - Tanetris 04:18, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
It's probably a Lost Vikings reference, as The Lost Vikings is a Blizzard game, and ArenaNet was founded by three former Blizzard employees. -- Gordon Ecker 04:26, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
It could also just be use of the name Olaf as a known name of the Viking period. There was Olaf I of Norway for an example of one historical figure who bore the name. -- WarBlade 03:26, 8 November 2008 (UTC)
Lol you definitely just Googled "Olaf" and that was the first Wikipedia article you saw. >.>--207.172.193.204 01:27, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
Well, yes. Seeing as I've always been interested in the Viking age and am Danish rather than Norwegian I did run a quick search for a link rather than venture information off the top of my head. Is this a problem? -- WarBlade 02:32, 13 November 2008 (UTC)
None of the above! Olaf isn't a reference to anything, I think we just thought it sounded cool. - User Linsey Murdock sig.jpgLinsey talk 05:21, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

i heard him and maallyx anyone else?75.165.100.21 20:15, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
Glint holds her own in that department. -- BroodlingUser Broodling67 sig.PNG 21:03, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
Mallyx is only level 30. Its Glint and Shiro afaik.- TheRave talk (talk) 21:06, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
we don't have numbers for them in hard mode? or do they not change lvl?75.165.100.21 22:14, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
AFAIK glint stays at 31 in normal and hard where as Shiro is 31 in normal and 33 in hard. Mallyx is 30 in normal and 33 in hard.
So in normal mode: Glint and Shiro
And in hard mode: Shiro and Mallyx
- TheRave talk (talk) 22:17, 23 November 2008 (UTC)
Sooo, Shiro therefore is the strongest? After all he is in both lists. -- WoBUser Wings of Blood sig icon.png 01:37, 24 November 2008 (UTC)
Glint is totaly the hardest to kill out of all of them tho. — Wolf User Great Darkwolf User Image paw.png 01:47, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

Dunkoro and Iroh[edit]

is Dunkoro a reference to Iroh who also couldn't help his son die in a war? Fox007 User:Fox007 20:30, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

No. - User Linsey Murdock sig.jpgLinsey talk 05:14, 5 October 2009 (UTC)

reference in Bull's Strike icon[edit]

It was noted at GuildWiki that the bull in this icon looks similar to New York's Charging Bull statue, but it seems such a generic pose that the reference probably isn't intentional. I'd be surprised if this was intentional, but you never know.

Also, bumping a previous reference question that never got definitively answered. —Dr Ishmael User Dr ishmael Diablo the chicken.gif 22:33, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

Wanderlust[edit]

Could it's name be a reference to the Nightwish song "Wanderlust" by chance? — Wolf User Great Darkwolf User Image paw.png 22:28, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Most likely not. The song is allegedly in reference to the Kender race in the Dragonlance series, and Wanderlust is a word that long predates both. — User Kyrasantae Fin sig.gif kyrasantae 00:01, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
Could be both. — Wolf User Great Darkwolf User Image paw.png 00:26, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
