Render request[edit]

Hi Emily, could I request a render for the most popular NPC page on the site, currently being Nicholas the Traveler with nearly 1.4 million views to date :) he would certainly get a lot of attention! --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 23:51, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Maybe a render of Professor Yakkington and Nicholas Sandford too?. Simzy User Truesimzy Simzy sig.png 14:39, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
Hiya guys! I am still having issues with Yak's model, so I'm unable to cap him right now. I will send an email over to the artists and see if we can figure out what's going on with him. I'll make a post it note to follow up on this :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:40, 29 September 2009 (UTC)
Hiya again Lemming! Sorry for the delay on this one. I capped two shots of Nick (pre and post searing), but Yakk's model is still doing weird stuff. I'm going to archive this request and make a sticky to walk over and talk to them about seeing whether re-exporting his model will fix what I'm seeing. Hopefully that works :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 01:52, 21 January 2010 (UTC)

GW:EN armor renders - full views[edit]

Heya, I'm just wondering, are the armor renders for front/back/sides for GW:EN armors in the pipeline anytime soon? Just that the ones for all the rest of the campaigns have been finished and GW:EN has been around a while now... Jennalee 10:48, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Follow Up[edit]

Hey Emily, I just wanted to ask you if you ever got a chance to talk to the team(s) about the possibility of a page in the feedback space where ANet staff/team(s) could ask specific questions for which they wanted community feedback. I realize things got a little crazy right after I made the suggestion, so no worries if it fell through the cracks, but I just thought I would ask. (Satanael | talk) 21:22, 6 October 2009 (UTC)

Heya Satanael! Yep, I brought this up a while back and folks agreed that it could be useful. Let me re-open the discussion to figure out details like how much use it would get and how it could be used. I'll let you know what I learn. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 23:59, 7 October 2009 (UTC)
Great, thanks Emily! In the mean time, I'll see if I can't start a little dicussion about how best to organize it. I don't think it will be very complicated to do, but I suppose it will also depend a little bit about how you guys want to handle it, so let me know how the discussion goes. (Satanael | talk) 04:23, 8 October 2009 (UTC)
If the team is concerned with having to slog through pages of responses, does the wiki system have a voting function like forums do so that there could be a general vote on topics, then a separate page for the discussion? Terryn Deathward 16:32, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
Not really, but this is being discussed in more detail here. -- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 16:35, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Non-English Guild Wars 2 Wikis[edit]

Hi Emily. I sent you an e-mail one and a half month ago and would really like to see it answered. The German GuildWiki team needs a clear statement from ArenaNet, because we want one German Guild Wars 2 Wiki soon — neither two nor zero wikis in some months. --numma_cway 21:40, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, it would have been really great to get at least something as a response here :) --Tera 23:40, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

French Wiki[edit]

Hello, Emily, I'm Boungawa, one of the administrators of the main French Wiki, I would have liked to know if, now that almost all articles exist on our wiki, it could become the French official Wiki with the IG links (F1) which clock on, for the France, this one. Thanks for your answer. - Boungawa 14:14, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

Hey, this is not an official answer, but I'll try to answer it to give you an idea about it.
The primary reason why GWW was created from scratch was because the previous wiki, GuildWiki, had an incompatible license that would make it impossible to use the content in-game. To make that possible, ArenaNet had to start with a new license that would allow them to use the content in-game. The french GuildWiki, similar to the original english GuildWiki, uses CC-BY-NC-SA. While that makes both wikis compatible with each other (so that you could use content from GuildWiki and translate it for example), it is incompatible to this wiki's GFDL and as such incompatible with the in-game linking.
Originally, the official Guild Wars Wiki was created with the option to have multiple different languages; those wikis in other languages actually even were accessible, however all were shut down after some months. As such it is unlikely that ArenaNet will open those official wikis in other languages again, especially as everybody would need to begin from scratch again (because of the license); and it would require a very long time to actually get to a level of information similar to GWW now, or to the "unofficial" wikis in other languages that already exist now. And with GW2 coming, people will probably lose interest in maintaining an official but very incomplete wiki when there are unofficial but complete wikis about the same old game already. poke | talk 10:52, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
ArenaNet has also stated that with the reduction of staff in the community relations team, there isn't enough ArenaNet staff to support other language wikis. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 11:01, 21 October 2009 (UTC)
Ok Thanks a lot for your answer ! :D --Boungawa 15:51, 23 October 2009 (UTC)

Guild hall image request[edit]

Hi Em! Is it possible to get a high res bird's eye view of the guild hall maps? I would like to do NPC placement images to identify where the henchmen and guild hall npc's are located now, but the only images I can find are so low res they just look bad. Thanks in advance! -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 10:00, 30 October 2009 (UTC)

i don't know if Linsey is still doing it but it might want to wait because of her project to make the npc placement in guild halls better. seen here as you i am sure already know.- User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 10:38, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
Pretty sure the current placement is where they're going to stay, otherwise why would they have put them there in the first place? That project was to fix the old static, all in a row placement, and make it more like it is now. -- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 12:10, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
my understanding of that project is that she was going to change the locations of the npcs like the merchant because in some of the halls they are really out of the way and not convent.- User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 20:23, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, I was thinking of only the new henchmen, didn't realize Wyn wanted to document the existing NPCs, too. -- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 12:51, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

3. Does the voice actor who does the voice of Palawa Joko do the voice of Gadd as well?
4. Is the art for the skill icon "On Your Knees!" inspired by the self-immolation of Buddhist monks such as Thích Quảng Đức?

Shiro's Daggers lore[edit]

Hi, Emily! A question popped up on Linsey's Journal talk that's not likely to be answered there, so I figured I'd ask you instead. Can anyone confirm why Shiro's Daggers have a requirement of 13, making it possible only for primary assassins to wield them in full effect? (Candy Corn/etc. aside ^_^) Thanks. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 17:01, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Isn't that rather obvious (short of the lore)? They wanted only primary sins to use them....I think that's it. Karate User Karate Jesus KJ for sig.png Jesus 17:14, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
We already realize THAT. The question is why they wanted only primary sins using them... User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 18:22, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
Because they're so POWERFUL. User Felix Omni Signature.pngelix Omni 18:29, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
Because Shiro is 'da man', and they're the largest daggers in the game. I really don't think it's very complicated. -- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 18:34, 11 January 2010 (UTC)
That's the conclusion that I came to. Power is not an issue, this set can easily be replicated at a requirement of 9 instead. I quite like the idea of "legendary" lore weapons, maybe other classes should get some... In fact I'm off to go make my first ever suggestion page. HoM[edit]

Hello, are cape trims ever going to be able to put in HoM? Well Gold trim specifically, but if I make a new guild and get say silver or poop. Thanks 24.150.172.32 02:29, 12 February 2010 (UTC)

Emily doesn't handle stuff like this, as far as I'm aware. Regina might be better to ask, though. Or Linsey, once the sysops stop being mad and unblock her page. –Jette 08:22, 12 February 2010 (UTC)
Trims are a guild reward, not a character reward. I bet there would be cases where people that didn't play GvG got it, people that played, but are not in that guild now, and people that joined after the fact just for the trim. Too messy. The GvG title will have to suffice. Roar! Poki#3 (talk) 22:11, 12 February 2010 (UTC)

Destroyer weapons are being sold constantly, it is not an achievement worth immortalizing for GW2. Thanks! NuVII User NuclearVII signature 3.jpg 17:22, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
If you want to immortalize the achievement of earning the placement, which consequentially awards the cape trim, feel free to give that to the players who got the placements, no problem there. That IS in fact a commandable achievement worth immortalizing. But do not base it off the cape trim, base it off whatever earns the cape in the first place. EVERYONE who has destroyer weapons got it exactly the same way: buying them (or the mats, same thing). With the cape trim, you have to way to tell if they busted their ass and earned it (in wich case kudos to them), or more likely bought the spot, cheapening the impression of this achievement, as the viewer can't tell how it was acquired. These two things are not comparable. Thanks! User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 22:26, 15 February 2010 (UTC)

Historical Skills[edit]

I understand you're busy and this probably won't ever be answered but here we go; What happened to the historical skills? Some of them seem like obvious balance issues, but some seem genuinely interesting and it remains a mystery why they were removed or trashed. Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ аІiсә User Aliceandsven 1.png ѕνәи Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ 18:39, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

I'm no ANet employee, but I can tell you that some of them were against GW's intended play style (being able to damage your own team is considered a problem, for example), while others made very little sense (Disappear causes you to no longer show up on the minimap which would be cool for sneaking up behind people, but you don't really know which way their camera is facing, so it's not as helpful as it might seem, not to mention it's not worth a skill slot in the first place). To answer the technical part of your question: most of them either still exist in the GW .dat file, libraries, etc. and, presumably, take their toll on its performance. They can't be seen by players by default, but that's true of almost as many player-available skills anyway. There may be some which have been permanently removed or converted into different functions, but it's really not worth it for me to check. –Jette 18:48, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

MediaWiki Update - 1.15.2[edit]

Hi guys! I've gotten word that the team would like to update the wikis to MW 1.15.2 within the next week or so. There's been a patch released that we'd like to apply to the sites, so I'd like to coordinate with you guys to figure out the best time to schedule the maintenance. Poke, I tested the new version out on stage, and the image redirects issue pops up again. I'm also uncertain whether your alternative talk page extension will work after the upgrade, so we'll probably want to look at getting those guys in place before the live upgrade so we don't have a period where they're not functioning.

Anyways, if you guys would be able to let me know when you'd like us to push the update, and if you've got updated versions of the custom extensions, I can get things set up on our end. Yell if you have any questions! :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:36, 10 March 2010 (UTC)

Good to hear that an update is coming! I'll make sure to release the usual code updates as soon as possible (probably during the weekend) and also check the extensions. poke | talk 12:30, 12 March 2010 (UTC)
Okay, I have checked the changes in 1.15.2 and really none of them collidate with any changes. Actually the change from 1.15.1 to 1.15.2 is that small that the patch should be all you have to do (source: patch, language patch). And if you still decide to copy everything over, you can reuse the changed files from 1.15.1 (link). There shouldn't be any compatibility issues with extensions either. poke | talk 18:56, 15 March 2010 (UTC)
Thanks Poke! I'll let the team know and then schedule a maintenance with them. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 21:24, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

Skills on Guildwars website[edit]

Hello, Emily!
I would like to notice that the full skill list, available on official website, is currently outdated and at least does not contain the changes from the last big skill update 25 February. It seems that website database, which should reflect such changes, is outdated too. I suppose that you don't have enough time just now to fix all skills in that list manually, but could you do something instead, like post an info that descriptions here don't reflect the last ingame changes and will be updated soon, or (alternatively) include a link to this Wiki as a source of more up-to-dated info? --Slavic 15:28, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi Slavic! Yes, unfortunately the skills section is a bit out of date. I'll look into a fix for this. Thanks! --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 23:23, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

Upcoming maintenance this Thursday[edit]

Hi guys! I've been notified that the team would like to perform an emergency maintenance on the site this Thursday at 5:00 AM PST. You may have noticed some performance issues with the wiki over the past few days, and I'm pleased to say that the guys have figured out what's been causing these problems. They also believe that they've finally been able to nail down what's been causing the wiki to hiccup when admins protect pages, so we're hoping that this maintenance fixes that issue as well.

If one of you guys could please post a maintenance notice for that time, I'd really appreciate it. I'd set the notice to say 2 hours, but we don't believe it will take that long.

As a final note, we won't be pushing the 1.15.2 changes just yet. We'd like to make sure that these upcoming changes are functioning properly before we throw anymore variables onto the pile. Once we're sure everything is stable, we'll schedule another maintenance for that small update.

Thanks guys! --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 23:30, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

Hiya! I'm excited to see your work! I have a small problem. Sadly, I sometimes use- that other GW wiki. I don't like to . . .but it has one thing that really helps my guild mates and I plan out our time in GW. It is the projected daily schedule for Zaishen Missions and Bounties. Welcome to the Guild Wars family! I'm sure you'll enjoy working with all of us and interacting with this community, we are a small community, ma'am, but there are those who love it. Gosh, there's so much for you to learn about us and the game we all love, but there will be time for all that. For now, just know that you are welcome, don't be scared, some of us are very passionate, but ultimately we all love the game and those who help make it better, which now includes you! So, yeah, welcome and I hope you get some free punch or something for your first day on the job! We're all looking forward to hearing from you about your past and what games you've worked on, communities you've interacted with in the past, so please, feel free to tell us all a little bit about yourself. Hi, Emily, just thought I'd stop by and say "Hi!" I am a huge fan of the wiki, and, even though I have been playing for almost 3 years, I always have it up in another tab while I am playing, lol! And the wiki is not just for me...when my husband plays, he will ask questions, and I find the answers..sort of a wiki once removed. Welcome! Tina Kalita (Dahgora Taggen)

Haha! You actually got me for a sec, Sat. And then I saw your name and was onto you :p But yeah, seriously, I am super excited for this new opportunity. I love all of you guys, so being able to interact even more is pretty awesome. And even though I've played since launch, there's always more to learn. That's why I love the wiki so much. It's good reading, even for the dev team. Folks here use the site quite a bit.
And thanks for the welcome, Tina! I'm glad you're liking the wiki too. I'm the same way. Even though I've worked on a lot of stuff on the game, I just can't remember everything. I always dual box...wiki on one laptop, the game on another. :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:43, 2 April 2010 (UTC)

"Can't Touch This!" Origins[edit]

I suppose I may as well ask, seeming how there has never been any "official" confirmation about the origin of "Can't Touch This!". I know the skill name was tossed around (mostly as a joke) on Guild Wars Guru about 2 months before Nightfall was released (see the thread here), but as the reference wouldn't be that hard to think up on its own, an official confirmation (or denial) seems in order. --Curse YouCurse You(talk|contribs) 23:01, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

mc-hammer? that's all that comes to mind for me- User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 14:13, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
If you look at the thread I linked, eventually something very similar to the skill implemented with Nightfall is "developed". Note that this was before Nightfall or information on skills from Nightfall was released. So I'm curious if the skill development team was at least influenced by that thread. --Curse YouCurse You(talk|contribs) 15:22, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
Oh yeah, this is definitely an MC Hammer reference. I can answer that without asking, because I was in the systems design room when the name was picked. The choice was accompanied with lots of giggles and singing...haha! XD --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 03:57, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
You might have missed (or misread) but I'm really inquiring about whether the skill's name and effect were at all influenced by the community, primarily, via Guild Wars Guru. --Curse YouCurse You(talk|contribs) 04:06, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I missed that part. Nope, the reference came from our own crazy heads and our own appreciation for Mr. Hammer. Sorry about that! --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 04:21, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

Hiya Amina! I'm honestly not sure what this issue could be :( I'll ask around the studio tomorrow and see if anyone has any ideas about what could be causing the problem. It sounds like it has something to do with your system, but it's hard to tell. Have you checked another wiki (like Wikipedia, for instance) to see if this happens there too? If you could narrow down whether it's something that just happens here versus something that happens in other places too, it may help us (me and the other wiki members) troubleshoot. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 09:38, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Wallpaper Wednesdays[edit]

Hey Emily, Congrats on your new role. You mentioned elsewhere about the lack of love for the Wallpaper section, I whole hardly agree. I used to look forward to Wednesdays for the new background and loved adding them to my rotation. Then one day, after I got a new monitor, with a higher resolution I wanted to get the old wallpapers for this resolution. BUT THEY WERE GONE. Only about a dozen of the backgrounds were left and I was stuck using smaller images then the glory of my 22' can handle. Any chance in getting the deleted images back so I can stock up on the older wallpapers again? Salvorin Fex

Random trivia...[edit]

Delves the Dodgy (collector in Fisherman's Haven) could quite possibly be a reference to the film A Knight's Tale... in the scene in which William (Heath Ledger) meets Geoffrey Chaucer (Paul Bettany) he refers to one of his squires by the fabricated name "Delves, of Dodgington". I realize it's a bit obscure and its a rather inconsequential character in GW, but I'm a big fan of A Knight's Tale and couldn't help but make the comparison. Besides, isn't random obscurity the basis of trivia?  :-) --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:Vincenzo Del Rey (talk).

I could probably get it done sometime if Emily gives me the name of the program she uses to render them. GW2 - Dervish[edit]

Emily,

Hi. If you have any pull, pretty please X infinitum see that the Derv profession is included in GW2. I so like the hoodies! Was it Churchill that said, walk softly and carry a big sycthe? LOL, but serious. I could also see a secondary weapon like a flail. And with a warrior skill like Frenzy, awesome! My 2 cents. Keep up the great work!

Dervishes and assassins are something like 'hybrid' professions, with both 'caster' and 'fighter' characteristics. If anything remotely like that is added to GW2, they will be likely Adventurers with medium armor. But since the 6 gods are something related to humans, Dervish as a profession is less likely. MithUser MithranArkanere Star.pngTalk 14:28, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

Moleneaux[edit]

I was having a wonder. See, for ages, this poor mole-like chap has been saddled with the trivia that he "may be named after the game designer Peter Molyneux. " Considering virtually everything else about the Dredge race is an allusion to aspects of Communism, I think Old Man Pete is rather an unlikely source (unless there's something in his political background that we don't know!). So, the best I could do was Moulineaux because that is a French ...commune. Yes, it's a truly terrible pun, but that is the foundation upon which this game was built, no? :D --snogratUser Snograt signature.png 12:16, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

Every path in Populous secretly lead to a Utopian Smurf type society and everyone knows Smurfs were Commie Propaganda. Case Closed --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 19:44, 3 May 2010 (UTC)
A couple of dredge names are puns with the word 'mole' the name of Russian 'reformists'. "Lenin" -> "Molenin", "Molachev"-> "Gorbachev". It may be either that, or a pun with another historical figure. Probably a French one, since the Canthan Dredge are to the south. MithUser MithranArkanere Star.pngTalk 15:29, 4 May 2010 (UTC)

Disappointment? Why? Each culture in GW has their own way of naming: Ascalonian use European names. Abaddon, God of Water and Knowledge?[edit]

On Abaddon's talk page, I've been trying to figure out where it is that we learn that Abaddon was the God of Water and Knowledge prior to his fall. As far as I can tell, the closest we get in English is "Lord of the Everlasting Depths, Keeper of Secrets" from the 'Scriptures of Abaddon,' but I interpret that a little differently. Was he really the god of water? I don't see that tying in well with knowledge or secrets the way all of the other elements relate to their respective gods, but then again, my opinion doesn't have a significant impact on reality. Can you help us clear this up? Thanks in advance! --RoyHarmon 02:55, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

The key to this section lies mostly with the story of the very first Margonite... and a little with your second to last encounter with Balhtek... (think Mirrors-->Portals) --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 03:57, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
I suppose the scrying aspect does help the case for a water-knowledge connection, though it seems tenuous compared to the others. I mean, I would readily grasp the connections between Melandru's nature and earth, Dwayna's life and air, Balthazar's war and fire... But Grenth being a god of the dead and cold seems so much stronger a connection than Abaddon's knowledge and water... I guess that's just my opinion until Emily gives us more information. As for the first Margonite, that's sort of my point. That passage from the Scriptures of Abaddon says nothing about water at all (except that it took place on a sea), but rather "Lord of the Everlasting Depths, Keeper of Secrets" and "transforming the sky above into a midnight void." That makes me think the Depths mentioned here would be more akin to the midnight void. --RoyHarmon 04:40, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
The Realm of Torment is Abaddon's prison and it is unclear whether it existed (as it does now) prior to his fall. Though I suppose it can be interpreted in both ways, I see "Everlasting Depths" as a clear parallel to water and even a metaphor for Secrets, which Abaddon is uncontestedly linked to. Furthermore, water is a common allegory for secrecy, given its nature to obscure things deep within it, distort and contain eddies and tides which are unapparent at the surface. Of course, like you said, this is only speculation until we get official word. :) -- Oiseau | User Oiseau Melandru.jpg 04:49, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
The most common theme in this game is that the "Evils" get the most mileage out of corrupting that which is most pure, which in Abby's case is done through water or knowledge(Glyphs). You cite the evidence yourself and then refute the idea he actually needed the water in order to create a void where his power could be most focused. It's based on real Physics, which ironically are far less abstract than Balthazar or Dwayna's powers are. --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 05:15, 7 May 2010 (UTC)
I remember an NPC mentioning that Grenth took over part of Abaddon's 'responsibilities' when he was trapped in the heart of his realm by the rest of the gods. But I don't remember any direct mention to water or knowledge, just to 'secrets'. MithUser MithranArkanere Star.pngTalk 20:01, 7 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi Emily... I had posted here before about a CSS issue that Opera seems to have with some headlines on guildwars2.com - You are using a combination of background-image and spans with normal text that is hidden with margin-left:-9999em. Opera seems to choke on that big number and does not hide the text causing both text & image to overlay. Martin actually said where Murro came from over on Guru2 when he just came out. All I recall was a famous journalist of a similar last name, so I think Edward Murrow is right. -- Konig/talk 20:45, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

IDK how feasible this is, but since Anet has PvP Editions of GW in their store now, would it be feasible to add a new command line like -pvpimage or some such that does what image does but only downloads stuff neccessary for PvP? This would vastly save on download + HDD without having to waste peoples time by entering a map first. DarkNecrid 15:20, 28 May 2010 (UTC)

Does anyone use the PvP editions of GW? I mean... honestly. –Jette 15:40, 28 May 2010 (UTC)
The Guild Wars client doesn't know which files are pvp-only files (and it has no way of knowing that). ~Shard User Shard Sig Icon.png 02:56, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
Perhaps so Shard, but IMO the server easily could (and probably does). All the client would have to do is send a different request to the server. User DimeCadmium sig.jpgDime Cadmium! 02:59, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
It would take someone at anet about a year to manually mark which files this would apply to. I wouldn't call that "easily." The server doesn't know anything about the files either. The client asks for files when it has errors loading them from the dat (like if they're not in it). For example, if you're entering an area you've never been to, the client might be like "I don't have file 92850, please give me file 92850." The servers players connect to don't have a list of every file each area uses.
Anet doesn't have a money tree, and this is something that would cost a lot of resources for them to do, and it would benefit them in no way, so they probably won't do it. ~Shard User Shard Sig Icon.png 03:10, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
And how do you KNOW that the server doesnt know this? I sure don't, and I'm pretty sure you may think so - but you don't know so. (Also, the PvP maps usually trigger PvP skills being added, do they not? Thus it must know) User DimeCadmium sig.jpgDime Cadmium! 03:13, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
PvP skills are a hack, mostly. It checks if you're in a PvP outpost (each of which must be marked as such), then updates your skills if you are. There's no magic that connects texture and model files to PvP skills. Even if the client was smart enough to tell which ones are needed for PvP and which ones aren't, I don't know of anyone who uses the PvP editions. Even if they do, HDD space is cheap. It doesn't take that long to download a few texture packs. –Jette 03:24, 11 June 2010 (UTC)
So it doesnt know which texture/models are associated with a outpost? Cause if it DOES, there you go. It can tell them (indirectly, but that doesnt matter). The other points (no one uses it & HDD is cheap) may be true, but the OP obviously saw a need for it, so i'll humor them.

Since you mentioned it during the in-game chat, would you be so kind as to repeat Anet's stance on the use of Texmod and KSmod here. Thanks.--User Pyron Sy sig.png Pyron Sy 16:01, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

It's on the article side. Or has the ArenaNet's stance changed? - J.P.User J.P. sigicon.pngTalk 16:22, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
It technically hasn't, but in the light of the recent mass banning, I thought it would be helpful to have a recent statement. I've seen questions on Texmod's legality on pretty much every GW related forum since the bans.--User Pyron Sy sig.png Pyron Sy 16:24, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
The problem isn't where they're taking a stance, the problem is they're trying to take an inconsistent stance by claiming that some players who were banned were something other than the Vanilla version but they won't tell us if they can actually detect which version is which, OR what what version (with an exact release Number & Mod Date & DL site) they actually consider to be the Vanilla version... Without this information, we can still be banned arbitrarily with no hard proof to counter the Ban. --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 21:30, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
i thought ksmod didn't even work any more. i was talking about the high res in town models, still dont know if that even works. - User Zesbeer sig.png Zesbeer 22:15, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
I would really REALLY appreciate links to the "vanilla"/"legal" versions of a GW multi-launcher, KSmod and Texmod. I think it would save everyone some major headaches. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 15:13, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
The Links are already on this wiki. The problem is Anet won't level with us on which releases they're detecting as the "corrupted" ver. If we had some date/release or even just a checksum to go off, we'd know if we're safe without them ever having to actually support the use of those 3rd parties. It's like yelling Motherfucking Snakes on this Wiki... I don't see a reason for such vulgarity either but they aren't condoning it at the same time by allowing it to remain an option or including other such pop references in their own game. ...but no, it looks like it will be up to us instead to make that knowledge public through trial and error just like any other research we do here. --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 22:31, 31 May 2010 (UTC)
Except error in this case constitutes a permaban? They just need to code KSmod-like option into the graphics options menu. Why they haven't yet is beyond me. :/ Some kind of official "approval" of a "safe" Texmod, possibly (preferably) hosted on guildwars.com would probably be ok too. I mean, if they somehow know which version is safe and which isn't, it means they already did the work to check them, so why not just host the safe copy and save everyone some headaches? User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 01:09, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
I'm sure there's some legal reason behind why they can't simply host a copy themselves. Now, if the current project to recreate texmod is successful, and the coders release everything to anet, then maybe, but I doubt it.--User Pyron Sy sig.png Pyron Sy 02:39, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
Wait, I thought it was open source. o_O Well, at the very least, again, if they have internally validated a specific release of TexMod, why not make the version public? -- Ilr's first comment here pretty much says it all. Ah well, I only care about multi-launching and KSMod functionality, which both look like trivial switches to code. In fact, it's my understanding that GW currently deliberately disables both of these properties, so really, the functionality is already there. And seeing as they have "allowed" the use of mods to circumvent these two "disabilities," I don't understand why they don't include them in the game client. All they need is to add a UI box into the Graphics Options for the in-town texture switch, and remove the client's check of whether another copy of GW is running, right? Heck, include a multi-launching option with the purchase of the next costume set, I guarantee more people will buy it. :P Or add it as a bonus to any in-game store purchase. I might finally buy a storage pane for that. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 09:24, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
Because a lot of GW's code is an absolute mess. Also, no-one seems to be able to find the author of TexMod or the source. I like to think he was eaten by grues. –Jette 10:52, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

(Reset indent) I'm with Rose on this, add the option to the store and I'd buy it just for the convenience and peace of mind that I'll not be banned for running two accounts at once, or risking my login details by using a third party program which may or may not be trustworthy. Also I'd not be surprised if GW's code is a bit messy at this point. Fixes, patches, updates, additions, campaigns, extra's etc. and so on, after all these years, it would be next to impossible to keep things neat and tidy. I'm sure I heard a collective sigh of relief from many of the programmers when they started working on GW2 and a clean slate. :) Though I'd still kill to get my hands on the tools and software for GW1 itself. It might be considered ancient now by software standards, but I think it still looks awesome and is capable of way more than I'm sure anyone at Anet expected it to be in the beginning. And the fact it manages to look good and run nicely while running in VirtualBox when most other games would crawl to a halt or look like Doom, is a testament to a talented bunch of individuals. I had a point to this entry but I forgot it now, oh yeah, official multi-launching of GW pretty please with Devona on top. :D Tylenol Jones 12:55, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

I couldn't care less about TexMod, but I'd sure like to get that 'Highest' option for textures to see full res textures in towns. Well, as long as you have the textures pre-loaded, otherwise it could take a while to enter towns sometimes. MithUser MithranArkanere Star.pngTalk 12:59, 1 June 2010 (UTC)
I'm not with rose on this one. I don't think we should have to pay to enable things the game can do anyway, such as run 2 clients and display high res armours in towns. These are things the game can already do but have been disabled for some reason and the community has gone out of their way to help restore these functions. This isn't about cheating or giving oneself an unfair advantage, this is simply about wanting to enjoy the game to the full. Emily a response on this would be greatly appreciated! -- Salome User salome sig2.png 09:32, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
Seems like you're with me on everything except the purchase part. The only reason I even suggested it as a bonus to any in-game store purchase is because of the endless brush-offs about not having time or resources to do pretty much anything the players ask for. This way was a compromise of not having to pay for the feature itself, but still boosting their income a bit, though this method might not even be feasible anyway. For what it's worth, Gaile has given a response on the matter. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 10:13, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
It "pays for itself" b/c you have to buy 2 copies of the game to do it... durp. --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 10:29, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
I think you are drifting off quite a lot. This shouldn't be about whether or not such tools are useful or if such a functionality should be inside of the game itself. It's rather about if there has anything changed on the previous stance regarding TexMod and KSMod (i.e. if it is still "safe" to use them). Btw. @Jette: I'm currently in active contact with the original TexMod author. poke | talk 17:30, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

GJ poke. And as for Anet, if they wanna keep selling copies of either games post-GW2, they might wanna consider a symbiotic relationship with 3rd party enhancements instead of a "Darfur" one... (especially in the case of their more loyal customers who will just be trying to finish up the titles for their linked accounts). --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 19:52, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
Fully supported modifications are too problematic in online RPGs. Remember City of Heroes? MithUser MithranArkanere Star.pngTalk 22:12, 3 June 2010 (UTC)
Yes but their programmers and powers team didn't even know what a lot of the code was doing b/c they're baddies who were hired by jack friggin emmert. And I don't think anyone is asking Anet to support any of these programs. Some kind of details on which ones are "illegal" (and WHY) would just be terrific tho... --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 09:34, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
I would guess that ANet's chance hasn't changed: "we probably won't ban you for using this, but we won't say it's safe to do either." That's probably the only response you're going to get, because unless ANet is given control of the source code, I sincerely doubt they would endorse a third-party product, especially one which interferes with the normal functioning of their game. Be thankful it's "wink wink, nudge nudge" instead of "ORIGINAL CHARACTER DO NOT STEAL." –Jette 10:44, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
I think I would prefer the latter, Jette. At least we'd know where we stood. This is like trying to get an answer out of a girlfriend when you already kind of know what she's about to say, but need to hear it from her first before asking her sister out. I'm kinda hoping that Gaile and the others aren't giving a solid answer because it's still in discussion within the company and might be heading toward a change to the wording in the EULA to clear things up once and for all, and then they've got something to point people towards when the subject comes up. Tylenol Jones 11:13, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
Well-said, Jones. Nice analogy. I, for one, would like to view high-res characters in outposts, but I've avoided using KSmod for fear of Dhuum's wrath. I mean, a "probably not" isn't good enough when I've spent thousands of hours and at least a couple hundred dollars on this game. I'd really like to hear them say something like, "We can and may ban you for it, though you might be lower on the list than RMT gold botters," if that's what they really mean. When they pull a sting operation and ban 3,700 accounts, your exact position on their list doesn't matter as much. I want to know for certain that it's okay before I try it, and if it's definitely not allowed, then at least I don't have to wonder anymore. And who knows? Once they determine that they consider it a problem, perhaps they'll take the logical step in solving it: make it an option in the graphics panel so we don't have any reason to use questionable alternatives. --RoyHarmon 20:18, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Question regarding the use of GW2 images on other websites[edit]

Dear Emily,

with Guild Wars 2 getting nearer, my wife and I decided to rework our GW1 fansite into a GW2 fansite. As you can imagine, we'd love to show off some of the Guild Wars 2 stuff (screenies, icons, etc.) that's also featured on your own www.guildwars2.com. Hence, we decided to officially request permission to do so and thus sent a mail to ArenaNet. However, 10 days later we have yet to receive a reply. Therefore, I'd like to ask these questions again. I was unsure where to ask them, but since you're in charge of websites, I decided to list them here. The questions were:

  • may we use the Guild Wars 2 logo on our website to indicate GW2 content?
  • may we crop the 2 from the Guild Wars 2 logo to use on the website to indicate GW2 content?
  • may we use the screenshots or parts of the screenshots to illustrate the upcoming content of Guild Wars 2?

We'll respect any 'no' or 'we haven't decided yet' that you might answer. Thank you for taking the time to read this. 145.94.74.23 12:51, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Mesmers[edit]

Emily, I have tried on multiple occasions with out any form of success to get a comment to the devs regarding the mesmer balance, I am a little bit irritated about the fact that the update seems to have made it nigh on impossible for people who chose melee professions as their main professions, I play war, and have found myself stuck as a monk for EVERYONE else I know who plays war because the mesmers on hard mode, PVE, are over spamming their skills. Now I understand the need for buffs and I do not need to be treated like a 2 year old like I have been by support, and the community people who emailed me back when I made a legitimate request to be heard, I feel that there is no legitimate place for us to be heard in response to some buffs made to pve monsters which have had some seriously indirect nerfs regarding melee classes in general, I wasted 68 energy removing empathy using my monk from a warrior on normal mode about 2 days after the buffs were released, and I did not realize until later that the reason it was spamming its skills was because of the fast casting attribute, over half the monsters have more than a 60% recharge rate for skills, now I understand buffs are needed <I cannot say this enough but alas this buff has made it hard for pretty much everyone I know who plays melee classes, and since all I seem to get is the big "it isn't my responsibility go tell the wiki" and I have posted retarded amounts of data to the wiki regarding this to get ridiculed by mesmers, and others, I now turn to you. It us unfair for those of us who play melee professions to suffer being unable to work our titles so close to the release of guild wars 2 I am in the middle of attempting legendary vanquisher on my warrior, and I can alas not make any headway because I get to use henchmen and heros, and frankly, I do not have room to make a hero do nothing but remove hexes and conditions, its a waste of hero space to have to do so, Some of the buffs are retarded strong, I mean empathy REALLY? not only does it make me not hit so hard it does massive damage back and coupled with clumsiness, and then coupled with adrenal denial AND ether feast being spammed to eat up all my energy WHAT am I supposed to do to fight this? perhaps you can have someone look into this because quite frankly I am tired of having paid premium prices for this game, and getting squat for support when I have a legitimate problem, and no legitimate outlet for that problem to be heard without ridicule. I am not the sort to want my thoughts out there and open for everyone to comment on, use of the wiki for this in my opinion is unacceptable. Rogueonion 18:01, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

OH and it was not exactly 68 but darn near, I had my high energy set on, and it was empathy, it was instantly recharging on normal mode we were in ohhh twin serpent lakes at the time,it was one mesmer, me as monk a war, hero's were tahlkora for condition controls, an mm, and a fire ele and I think the war had a ranger heroRogueonion 19:37, 12 June 2010 (UTC)

I take it back, I will stop posting, I am tired of the 12 year olds who come on here ridiculing me for trying to be heard, anet needs a forum for serious discussion where 12 year olds don't constantly ridicule each other, and the wiki is retarded for being this way, besides the fact, WHO really wants 5 accounts to play a game? I mean.. really? It is just one more piece of garbage account for us to keep track of, thanks for nothing anet!! Do not really care anymore I just choose to not buy any more of your products, and this is based on the support I have received regarding this issue. Rogueonion 18:07, 14 June 2010 (UTC)

Licensing on GW2W[edit]

Hi, I'm told you're the one to go to about this. For the purposes of drafting a policy expressing the terms in simpler and less lawyer-y wording (ala GWW:COPY), could you tell me whether the GW2W licensing is functionally the same as the GWW licensing, and if not what differences there are? It doesn't seem like there's any difference except concerning the yet-to-exist GW2W Feedback namespace, but the GW2W one is so much shorter that I'm apprehensive. --Kyoshi User Kyoshi sig.png (Talk) 17:47, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

Feedback space can have any licensing ya want b/c Anet's not using it according to Regina. And Martin seems to insist that the devs are reading Guru instead. Infact if you look at the comments, it look like Anet is abandoning the idea of even having a presence on wiki so most of the policies that catered to dev interaction could just be abandoned along with that. --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 21:53, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
Ilr: I'm not sure where you are getting the idea that developers are not using the wiki. If you could link to the source of where I posted this comment, I will be happy to try and clarify it for you. I will also pass your post along to Martin, so if you could link to Martin's quote, I'm sure he would be pleased to try and clarify that as well. :-) We and the devs read many, many places to get an idea for how players are feeling about issues. We are not in a situation where, if we read one place, we must not read another. We need to read dozens of communities, not just the wiki and not just Guru. It gives us a better picture of player perspectives than relying on only one or two sources. :-) I regularly link to the wiki in reports, to remind them to check the Feedback space. Our support team directs players to the wiki to post suggestions. Our designers ask us to post on forums, asking players to post to the wiki if they have specific suggestions. For example: currently Dervish changes are slated for the future. Paragon fans are asking why it wasn't their profession. The reason is that the design team simply doesn't have as strong ideas for Paragons as they do for Dervishes, and they're open to ideas--and they're looking on the wiki for those ideas. We truly value all the time and effort that users take to post there, as well as the effort that wiki players took to create it in the first place. :-) --Regina Buenaobra User Regina Buenaobra sig.png 23:01, 25 June 2010 (UTC)
But what about GW2W licensing? –Jette 17:22, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
^this... yes we know Robert reads the Feedback space and I'm not surprised Lin & him are having trouble nailing down exactly what Spears & Motivation need done to them to replace that broken SY-Imbagon meta. TBH, none of us do. But they're not Izzy & Flannum or even Miller & Grubb. None of the members on the sequel Team even have user pages on the wiki so how could they be watching any feedback spaces? All the questions & concerns they address on the blog are always raised on Guru forum, not the wiki... which relates to what Martin said. IE: there's no reason to contact Martin for further clari- fication b/c he helped clarify it perfectly already. ...and given the hysterical outbursts of the creators of topics like the one above this one, it's no-secret as to why. --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 21:40, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
Why would any of the GW2 team have userpages on GWW? And none of the Anet staff have pages on GW2W, so just what is your point? I think Regina's point is that the comments you have attributed to her regarding the abandonment of the Feedback namespace are pure fiction, as is your assertion that Martin has claimed Guru as being the source of the dev's community information. Jette, I would assume that the licensing terms for GW2W are exactly as they read on http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Guild_Wars_2_Wiki:Copyrights -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 22:20, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

right, so we're right back to the same old canard that people can USE it assuming they have faith that someone important is reading it but there's no concrete evidence that it's anymore effective than just posting on Guru. Though that doesn't mean the user can't attempt a multi-pronged approach of making a fancy attention-getting poster for their idea on guru with a link to their Feedback space Page where the bulk of the suggestion is supposedly legally admissible... --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 23:58, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

new items based on legend of the seeker[edit]

Am a huge fan of Legend of the Seeker and was wondering if it would be possible to introduce new items or clothiing based off that tv/book series? There are many interested fans of the show/book and i think many items, weapons, or clothing may also apply to this game. I am not sure where to post this but I thought you might be able to pass this on to someone who would care. If you have suggestions, register an account and go to Feedback:Getting started create a feedback page and suggest away. There are copyright issues they have to deal with, and I doubt any "clothing" items will be created, as they have indicated there will be no new armor for GW as it takes too much artist time, and any new costumes will be based off of themes already in game. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 06:40, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

I keep trying to download one of the 3D screenshot programs that snips models from DirectX environments so I can render images, but I keep forgetting to do it. Funny how that works. –Jette 07:00, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I saw the dye preview one, but whenever I try to use it, it won't cooperate. The dye preview is only the piece I put the dye on, and if I drag in more pieces like it says I can, it won't let me and has the mouse with the (\) through it. ~Farlo Talk 20:35, 17 July 2010 (UTC)
Can't drag new pieces, only new dyes. If you want a render of something other than the base gray, you'll need to actually dye the pieces, then use the dye preview mod to grab the shot.--User Pyron Sy sig.png Pyron Sy 19:29, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Undead Lich in Thunderhead Keep Final Cutscene[edit]

When you beat the mission and your party goes through the portal to the RoF, the Lich and *spoiler boss* follow you through. Does this mean that Vizier has transformed and then followed you through the portal? Kinda confused to what exactly happened 'cause moments earlier he walked away with King Ironhammer. ~Farlo Talk 09:14, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

An important loot question[edit]

Hi there Emily! I would greatly appreciate your help with quite a simple question: Are caster items only dropped by monsters with the corresponding profession excluding a few common staff exceptions? Just to give an example, can a Mesmer monster actually drop an Elementalist off-hand? Thanks in advance for your answer! ***EAGLEMUT*** TALK 10:32, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

Eaglemut, it was already proven on the skale's talk page that casters can also drop caster weapons that are not related with their own profession. The actual question here is rather if River Skale Tads are elementalists or not. The looting system isn't so regular to base a profession on it. poke | talk 13:53, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

Wiki maintenance[edit]

Heya guys! I wanted to pop in and let you know that the operations team has informed me that they will be moving both this wiki and the GW2 Wiki to their new datacenter homes on Monday, August 16. They expect the maintenance window to last from 6 am PST to around 2 pm PST, although they hope to have it completed in a shorter time.

I apologize for my absence around here lately. I've been up to my nose in tradeshow and GW2 stuff, so I've had to focus all of my energy on that stuff. Once things simmer down, I'll be back to posting and responding to questions. Bear with me! :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 17:48, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for taking the time and letting us know! ***EAGLEMUT*** TALK 18:28, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
No worries! I wanted to mention something else. On August 16, we're going to actually make the wiki read only for a time while the DB is moved. So the wiki will likely be up the whole time, but it won't be editable for the period of the maintenance. Please keep that in mind so you're not worried about what's going on when you can view the site but not edit it. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:52, 13 August 2010 (UTC)
Ah, great news! ***EAGLEMUT*** TALK 22:55, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Wiki performance worse since database move[edit]

Heya, Emily. I and others have noticed poor response time from the wiki since the data center and database moves. Performance appears noticeably better since the first 2-3 days, but it's still worse than the old wiki's (which, alas, says a lot — all bad). I sent support a ticket, but it appears to be lost with the game performance techs (which is too bad: it's probably an independent problem).

Who would be the best person to alert?

Before the move, following links or submitting previews took fractions of a second. Now, they often (but not always) take seconds and 2-3x/hour, they might take minutes. Images take even longer to load. I've checked this out from different machines, after resetting computers/router, and from outside my home with pretty similar results.

Thanks for your attention.  — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 01:20, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

GW Wiki Page Layout[edit]

Hi Emily! Necro (and SS) rules! I also love the layout of your personal gw wiki page :-). I am an alliance lead and I would love to create an alliance website like yours but with each guild having its own tab. How do I go about doing that in GW Wiki? Thanks a bunch! ~~Kyll NeverDawn.

You could use my template which I modeled largely after Emily's earlier tab design. It's pretty flexible, though it won't be able to reproduce it exactly (I'd need to make a tiny alteration for that, I could do that if you decide to use it). Alternatively you could use her code here (be sure to check out the subpages, it's rather complex). WhyUser talk:Why 14:52, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the update, but the tab-page was design for a {User:<name>...}. Is there one for an Alliance or guilds?  :-) ~~Kyll NeverDawn

It can be used on pretty much any page, though you'll have to know something about wikicode to make it work. WhyUser talk:Why 15:56, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks again. I was able to make it work. I'm glad I have a computer programming background ;-). ~~Kyll

Guild Wars: Utopia[edit]

Hello, would it be possible for someone who was involved in the development of Utopia to give us a comprehensive overview of what Utopia was going to be? Such as plot synopsis, mechanics, features, so on and so forth. This would be much appreciated, from myself and I'm sure others in the community. Thanks. Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ аІiсә User Aliceandsven 3.png ѕνәи Ƹ̵̡Ӝ̵̨̄Ʒ 06:10, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

I imagine that you won't get much infromation. They cancelled utopia because half the things they wanted they realised would require weren't possiable with the GW tools/engine so the started developing GW2 so they could implement said things (so I would imagine if they gave information about utopia they'd have to be careful incase they give info about GW2 away). ~ PheNaxKian talk 15:31, 7 September 2010 (UTC)
Then let them be careful while giving us information, if they can. I'm curious too. --Kyoshi User Kyoshi sig.png (Talk) 19:40, 7 September 2010 (UTC)
From what they said, it looks like most of what Utopia was was either scrapped or recycled into Eye of the North. I don't think material they were planning for a fourth chapter in GW1 would qualify for content 250 years from now, considering that- ... oooh WAIT A FUCKING MINUTE!! I want Utopia back... Texture Model request[edit]

Hey Emily, I was just wondering if there was any way to get the texture that's applied onto Mad King Thorn (See : Texmod) before he appears in-game? I was thinking of maybe taking out the minipet... But assumed that would be lower quality. Would there be any way you would know of to get that? :/ I had an awesome idea (At least I think it's awesome >.> ) For the upcoming Art Contest, but realized that the only texture from mad king thorn I could nab would be from the Mini.

TL;DR version : Is there any way to get Mad King Thorn's texture? Please and thank you <3 70.181.72.216

From a programming standpoint, it would make more sense to use the full-res texture on minipets. Minis are just regular monsters scaled down and given simple AI. Texmod is your best bet, aside from sifting through the bottomless abyss that is the dat file. ~Shard User Shard Sig Icon.png 07:32, 5 October 2010 (UTC)

Volunteer GMs[edit]

Hia Emilly :) You told me in game that you aren't planning any "volunteer GMs" or "player moderators" in GW2. This system is working well in much MMO games. Is ArenaNet having any objections against this idea? User Demonical Monk av.png Demonical Monk 22:43, 16 October 2010 (UTC)

With great power... comes a lot of trouble. MithUser MithranArkanere Star.pngTalk 12:55, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
I doubt this will work with large online games like GW. With the /report system, it makes things a lot easier for any player to be reporting any offensive chat or violations. You can have things like the GW1 sysops be volunteer GM's but, while I trust them to use sysop powers responsibly, I don't trust them to use GM powers responsibly. --Lania User Lania Elderfire pinkribbon.jpg17:53, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
Basically the only way I could see this working well is if a volunteer GM's reports only bumped a person up on the queue (or however they sort it) of reports. Even then it could end up being annoying for somebody server-side. -- Kyoshi User Kyoshi sig.png 19:23, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
Current report system is bad. Sometimes insulting may happen in very corrupted district (I mean local districts like polish or francais) where nobody care about "peacekeeping". If somebody is insulted in foreign language on foreign district chances for punishment are very low. Sometimes it looks like GMs are ignoring foreign-language reports or making them lowest priority as possible because some statements need additional translation which takes much time. Local gamemasters choosen for specific districts may help in providing translations and setting priority of reports. 89.161.18.37 20:26, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
Well, if someone insults me in a language I don't know it's as if they talked with a wall. So I don't see that as a problem. MithUser MithranArkanere Star.pngTalk 20:48, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
No, I mean insulting on another player from your country. If you are from Poland and group of people is insulting you for example in Kama Pol-1 (which happens for somebody every 15 minutes, because this district is ultra corrupted) your /report is worth nothing because GMs cannot understand Polish statements in game chat logs... 89.161.18.37 21:56, 18 October 2010 (UTC)
Its only one of much problems in GW banning system. 89.161.18.37 21:58, 18 October 2010 (UTC)

Guild Hall Skill Trainer[edit]

Hey Emily, this problem has been nagging at me for over 3 years; Why does the GH Skill Trainer only offer Proph skills but other NPCs in pvp areas offer all unlocked skills? I'm sure I'm not the first one to try to bring this to your attention. Is there a possibility a little patch can be included that can make all GH Skill Trainers offer all unlocked skill for every profession? -- Wings of Blood 02:56, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

I've wondered this myself. When the trainer first came out I thought it was because you'd be able to buy Factions skills on a Prophecies-only account and vice versa, but since then I've found that in the exceedingly rare circumstances you can capture or equip a skill you don't have a campaign for, you just get a lock symbol like PvE skills in PvP, so it seems like there isn't a point to it now. It would make the skill trainer NPC a lot more useful. –Jette 03:00, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

Trivia for The Killing Joke[edit]

There's been some dispute over the reference made with this particular quest. There's a Batman Comic with the same name, but the quest's dialogue seems to suggest it being a Monty Python's The Funniest Joke in the World reference. --Curse YouCurse You(talk|contribs) 13:38, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

It's clearly a reference to the Monty Python. The joke has the same simple structure: Question > Asnwer, and it's also unintelligible until 'translated'.MithUser MithranArkanere Star.pngTalk 20:25, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
It is painfully obvious (the quest before has a clear Monty Python reference), but some people won't give up claiming it isn't unless there's an official confirmation. --Curse YouCurse You(talk|contribs) 21:27, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
When it's painfully obvious you don't need confirmation to add a trivia note. --Lania User Lania Elderfire pinkribbon.jpg22:05, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
It's painfully obvious to me, to others, apparently not so much. --Curse YouCurse You(talk|contribs) 11:43, 28 October 2010 (UTC)

(Reset indent) So, people have acknowledged the Monty Python reference, but now there's the question of if the name is a reference to the Batman comic. --Curse YouCurse You(talk|contribs) 01:29, 30 October 2010 (UTC)

Stumme just said that it wasn't a reference to Monty Python here. It would seem there is no reference as "The quest was just named what it was because it describes what's going on." -- Konig/talk 23:40, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
