Wallpapers on website

Hi, I was wondering if you could open up the directory http://www.guildwars.com/images/wallpaper/ or even http://www.guildwars.com/images/ on the website. (Just post a index.php there that makes a list of all jpg in the folder). Pretty please? (Qanar | talk) 17:17, 11 October 2008 (UTC)

Er...Elaborating a bit, we have noticed that the wallpapers section on the American website has changed a bit. Now each game has its own wallpaper page, featuring at most nine images (the Factions one, for example). The thing is, there used to be far more wallpapers than nine for each game; and while the American website apparently does not have those wallpapers anymore, we can still find them in the other Guild Wars official websites (103 at the European website, for example, some different ones on the site from Taiwan, etc). We know you guys are working on the website and that you specifically are very very busy, but is there any chance that those wallpapers could be seen again on the American site? Heya guys! We're looking into a solution that will index all papers, and we're also planning on eventually getting all of our past papers up for download. I have a feeling that this will be one of my side projects (so I don't sidetrack the efforts of our already crunched designers). I can't promise any exact times on when it will be done, but I promise I'll check into it sometime this week. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:00, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Emily, you must have the Superior Rune of Awesome affixed somewhere on your person - thanks! – User Barinthus Magical Compass.png Barinthus 19:58, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, Emily : ) And congratulations for your new position : D Erasculio 21:21, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

on that same note Emily is it possible that you can get some of the loading screen art? i particularly like the vabbi loading screen and a few others that were never made into wallpapers. i am of coarse talking about the loading screens with what looks to be concept art not the loading screens with screen shots (those just look bad imo)75.165.117.51 18:45, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

also i want the spear that the para is holding in the february wallpaper on the taiwan page *crys* http://www.guildwars.in.th/static/download/wallpaper/FEBRUARY1600x1200.jpg75.165.117.51 18:51, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
Just a note: if one day you are at work without anything to do, with everything in the wiki and on the website completely fixed and finished, all possible content up on both sites, the little fishes in the aquarium already happily fed and etc (in other words, never xD), any chance you could find out for us if we could ever get the Guild Wars cartoons from the Korean site on the American site, like this one? Given how that's likely not possible, any chance we could one day get a transcript or something along these lines for those? I have no idea how these things work, but if the Korean website had to ask the main Arena Net company permission for the content in those videos, maybe there's an easy way to access those transcripts and hopefully one day make them available...? Erasculio 01:39, 24 October 2008 (UTC)
Hiya guys! I'm working on the wallpaper stuff right now, but it's taking longer than I'd predicted. Erasculio, I can check into the cartoon question. I don't know where that came from, so I'll have to do some investigation. While we don't really have the video resources to subtitle anything, it's slightly possible that I may be able to wrangle favors from coworkers or friends to get a transcript or something. No promises, but I'll look into it for ya. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:33, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Animations

Hi Emily, do you remember this topic, in which we asked you to see if there was anything you guys could do about our (very large) animation files? We have found ways to work around that problem, so it isn't an issue anymore. No need to worry about that subject again, so I guess you could archive it : ) Erasculio 18:30, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Awesome! Thanks for the heads up :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:24, 8 January 2009 (UTC)
Eh, not to burst the awesome bubble, but a few animations I have (some of the Ranger spirits) come out to over 2 MB, the largest being 2.75 MB. If it's too much of a hassle to fix this, that's fine, but it'd be great if you could raise the cap to 2.75 MB somehow. calor (talk) 22:53, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
Would you like me to edit the images so they have a smaller size? I couldn't find a way to edit the really large images (the 4.00 mb ones), but the ones with less than 3.00 mb may be edited without loss in quality. Erasculio 11:36, 11 January 2009 (UTC)
It's only a few, and I've managed to crop them down, trim off a few beginning and end slides, etc. to get them down to size. It'd be nice to upload them without having to cut them down in any way, but it's nothing big. Thanks for the offer, Erasculio, but I can do it myself :) calor (talk) 01:36, 12 January 2009 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Hi guys! I'll check on this upload limit increase request, but this is one of those slippery slope topics where some kind of a reasonable limit has to be set. I'll let you know what I find out. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 03:18, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Perhaps then, a permanent change isn't necessary. Changing the limit size for a set amount of time would allow people to upload the files and then when it's all said and done, the limit can be reset at whatever it needs to be. I am assuming of course that the size restrictions only apply to uploading said animations and not to hosting them. Anyways, my idea might be of some use. :) UserDrago-sig.gif Drago 10:37, 23 January 2009 (UTC)
Can there be a special change that allows particular users (those on the project) to upload more than 2Mb under the animation heading? --TalkAntioch 17:36, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Skale and Magic Compass trivia

Is the name of this quest by any chance a reference to the Merry Melodies cartoon "What's Opera, Doc?" featuring Elmer Fudd's Spear and Magic Helmet? Thanks! 99.142.29.199 00:49, 14 February 2009 (UTC)

Update of Guild Wars Wiki:Copyrights

Hey Emily, we would like to add some reference to our copyrighted content policy to Guild Wars Wiki:Copyrights, as it is frequently confused with the policy and people started complaining that there is no information about copyrighted content there. Would you be able to somehow include a link to the policy nicely? Maybe something like "under the licensing terms of this site in consideration of our copyrighted content policy." at the end. Thank you. poke | talk 01:36, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

Heart in Pre-Searing

I am fairly sure that you already addressed this but I was unable to find it in your archives. I was trying to remember the story behind this heart in Ashford area in the pre-searing. Could you elaborate? I hope to create a section on it so people don't have to ask you about it - there's nothing on it on the Ashford page. – User Barinthus Magical Compass.png Barinthus 08:27, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

what's the wording? DD . SS ? (Terra Xin 02:15, 18 April 2009 (UTC))
Apparently. I vaguelly recall that one of graphic developers for the game used that to propose to his gf or something. Was hoping that Emily could share some details. I'm sure she has a lot on her plate right :) – User Barinthus Magical Compass.png Barinthus 08:44, 19 April 2009 (UTC)
I think you are right Barinthus, I recall that a couple devs went through GW's first online wedding on like the opening day of GW, there should be an early article that talked about this. Although, I'm not sure if this heart is related at all... (Satanael 04:06, 20 April 2009 (UTC))
To my knowledge the heart was used in a proposal :) Wedding Article - an early article on Guildwars.com --Smithy-Star 21:15, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

Any way you can get the images for the Common Gloves?

The Images for the Common gloves(chaos, stone, glacier, destroyer, dragon, etc) seem to be flooded with people showing off the rest of their armor instead of these gloves. Some of the Images don't fit the same size of each other(Male and female pictures different sizes.) Is there any way you can get the pictures for these items uploaded showing off the gloves, and not someones 15k armor? 24.233.254.51 07:55, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Heya anonymous! I am pretty sure I did upload renders for at least one of the gloves, but I can double check and add the rest. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 16:54, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

renders

Hi Emily, got a special request, obviously getting a lot of traffic for nicholas because of the gifts and stuff, was hoping we could get renders for File:Nicholas.jpg as it is the same model for the traveller and Sandford as well as professor Yakington :) if you have time of course. --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 18:08, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi guys! Yeah there are two different skins for Nicholas - his younger pre-searing self, and his slightly older post-searing self. Yakk stays the same. I can get renders of both Nicks, but the Yakkington may be a little tricky. He has model issues in my render tool, so I'll have to ask the artists about them before I can get a good shot of him for the site. I will follow up on that this week :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:57, 5 May 2009 (UTC)

Just Reporting Broken Links

This is the first time I've written anything for the the Website Producer, but I didn't know where else to go with this. I was going to the EU Guild Wars site downloading wallpapers because that's the only site with an archive of all the wallpapers the Guild Wars team ever put up. There are a few with either incorrect links or their wallpapers have been somehow erroneously removed from the site. I've provided the links below:

http://eu.guildwars.com/gallery/view-wallpaper/654/
http://eu.guildwars.com/gallery/view-wallpaper/137/
http://eu.guildwars.com/gallery/view-wallpaper/186/

I'm not sure if this is the place to ask a quick question as well, but is there any reason why this wealth of beautiful art was removed from the US site and whether they will ever be available again? Guild Wars was the panacea for my wallpaper needs thanks to you guys being the only ones around who did widescreen ones long before anyone else did. 72.130.183.68 05:40, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

Just fyi, all three work fine for me. It's the Paragon (omg I want that shield...), the Kaineng Slums, and Devona. Dig around, I remember seeing a thread about the wallpapers already somewhere around here, Emily was going to look into that. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 17:42, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the report, IP! I see that you're talking about the widescreen versions of those papers, so I'll look into the issue. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:16, 15 May 2009 (UTC)
Looking forward to those wallpapers, Emile! If anyone else is using the Windows 7 RC, the Themes feature allow a slideshow of wallpapers on your desktop. Skill icons

Oh hi. I'm Jette, resident wiki troll and malcontent. When I'm not busy stirring up dissent between Gaile and Shard, I also work on making high-resolution skill icon mods via TexMod. I got most of the icons from the skill card package released some time ago, and others with google image search, but there are a lot of icons still missing -- Shield Guardian and Protective Spirit to name a few of the main skills. Aside from those, I'm also missing all of the PvE-only skills, all monster skills, and the generic Monster Skill icon (the angry face). There are probably others I've forgotten as well. I was wonder if you, or anyone else on the team, would be able to release those icons in their high-resolution form, as you did with the majority of them earlier? I could provide you a list of the ones I need, if it would help. If you want an example of my "work (lol)," the TPF for the elementalist icons (pretty much finished) is here, along with a mod I made to clean up the interface a little (very small mod, about 50kb) here. --Jette User Jette awesome.png 10:25, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

I don't see why it wouldnt be.Talk page Drogo Boffin 22:41, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
The original Confederate battle cry would seem far more likely to me - otherwise we're walking down the road of referenced references again, considering Billy's 5 minutes of fame was a reference to said battle cry. --snogratUser Snograt signature.png 23:11, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
Agreed with Snograt, well said. They're both battle cries, that should be a "duh." User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 14:55, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
Unfortunately, it's not so obvious, which is why we have to ask to find out. Smooth Criminal could be a reference to confidence men in general, but we all know it's a song reference. There's no reason that Rebel Yell couldn't be the same. ~ Mortimer 19:02, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

Vain Hope

Yeah, this is a stupid question, I'm sure, and I'm pretty sure I know what the answer is already, but I'll sleep better if I ask. I've also got no real idea if you're the right person to be asking this, but I know you're active here on the wiki, so...
What are the chances of me, or anyone else, really, getting their hands on a copy on the server software or source code or whatever have you for Guild Wars? I've been having a bit of a nostalgia attack recently, what with digging up my old Prima game guide to Prophecies (waste of 20 bucks imo, but I was slightly younger and even stupider) and a bunch of those atrocious pre-made PvP builds, and I want to set up my own private GW server for me and possibly people like me to play GW on, with everything after Factions being reversed or removed and things back to the way they were basically at release. I know a while ago somebody was working on a project called GWLP that emulated GW's software and such, as well as had a rather unique method of preventing people from accessing content that they hadn't paid for, but the project went down for some reason or another, probably the ridiculously complex process of attaching to the network, as well as the fact that as fun as spawning ten thousand shiro clones into Ascalon is, it gets old eventually. You should try it sometime though. Preferably on the live server. And make sure to bring fraps.
In the altogether rather likely event you (understandably) refuse, what about after GW goes down? The inevitable truth is that one day someone is going to pull the plug on the servers, and when that happens, I think it'd be nice if some of the fans could host their own servers. Since who paid for what would no longer be relevant at that point, it might be a nice sort of parting gift if you released the engine or whatever for people to muck around with. Private serves for World of Warcraft have positively colossal followings, with records of 20,000 unique accounts on single servers (which may be even higher now, I haven't checked recently). I realize it's sort of a "distant future" kind of thing, but it is foreseeable. I'd also like to take the opportunity to direct your attention towards the post I made about a month ago above, which you didn't reply to -- I have actually made the effort at getting in contact with the artists themselves (who I have proof actually made the icons at decent-sized resolutions, even silly ones like the candy corn). Anyway, I understand if you're not even allowed to talk about this kind of thing, but the obsessive modding community as a whole (population: me, basically) thanks you regardless. --Jette User Jette awesome.png 07:13, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

GWLP is still being worked on. ~Shard User Shard Sig Icon.png 08:36, 11 July 2009 (UTC)
I thought it was abandoned, or I can't find it anymore, anyway if i'm correct you need to have an official GW account to be able to play on a GWLP server. Also when I was following the project it was constantly broken when there were new updates to the official servers. talk Qaletaqa Hania 18:56, 12 July 2009 (UTC)
If GWLP is still actively being developed, then I'll have to dig deeper via google or whatever. Regardless, I'd still like to hear from Emily or someone on this. I miss rift wardens.  :< And Christmas Tombs! You guys should do that again. I know it's mostly abandoned except for A/Es, but it'd look nice all decorated again. --Jette User Jette awesome.png 19:14, 12 July 2009 (UTC)
Heya Jette! Yeah, this is unfortunately really far out of my realm (and possibly out of the realm of things I can even comment on). Another Idea

Hi again! I had another thought about the feedback area that I wanted to bounce off you. I was thinking about the new Test Krewe you guys are going to put together and I was wondering if you would have any interest in a dedicated page in the Feedback space where a dev can ask a specific question with the intent of getting more direct feedback from the player community. We could call it like "ArenaNet Asks..." or something like that, and a dev could ask a question like "What skills should a GvG henchman Monk use?" and the community could respond on the talk page.

I haven't brought this up with the task force people yet, so I have no idea what they'll think, but my guess is that it would not be too hard to implement. In any case, I wanted to check with you to see if this is something you guys would want or have any interest or desire in using before bringing it to the floor with them. (Satanael 14:54, 22 July 2009 (UTC))

Hmmm, I'd have to bring that up with the community and live teams to see if that's something they'd be interested in. I'll do that and let you know :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:23, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi Emily, any update on this? Even if you give the go now, I think the necessary discussion about it might mean it would have to happen after we go live with the space, but I thought that you may have gotten a chance to discuss this with the various teams since we are going live soon. (Reset indent) Heya Simzy! Is the wiki the only site you're having issues logging into? I'd try clearing your cache/cookies and restarting your browser and see if that helps. I can ask the team to check out the logs, but I haven't experienced any issues nor heard of any other complaints from folks, so it seems like something is happening on your end. To troubleshoot whether it's an account issue or a computer issue, you could also try creating a second account just to test. If you're able to log in with that one, try your main account again. If it's still not working, it's probably a password issue or possibly something else. Try those things and let me know if you still have problems. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:21, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

That's really strange :( Thanks for the report and the followup, though, Simzy. I've gotten a complaint in the past about password resets taking a while to actually function, but we weren't able to track down the issue. I am going to relay this information again to the team and see if this second occurrence helps them figure out what could be happening. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:40, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

gw2w upgrades

Hi Emily, just wanted to say that gw2w hasn't been upgraded with DismissableSiteNoticePlus, ListTransclusions, and file redirect fixes in case you weren't aware; they're not incredibly important things, given the state of the wiki, but it might save having to upgrade or install a bunch of things all at once later. --User Brains12 circle sig.png Brains12 \ talk 16:00, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Any idea when this can be updated? 1.7.8 has a bugfix I found myself needing in order for some stuff to work at all. Backsword 18:30, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

A fair guess would be after the GW2 website is up and running, after the Feedback section is opened, and probably either after or at the same time as the upgrade to MediaWiki 1.15. In other words, they've got a lot on their plate right now. Try back next month. - Tanetris 18:52, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

One question about Live Test Krewe Application.

How do you make sure someone is 18 or above? - J.P.ContributionsTalk 23:31, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

You can't force a age verification beyond a drop down box, but when they review either the account attached to the character, or by other means will verify the users age. Beyond that its just trust. --Dominator Matrix 23:41, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
Also I think they will send out the NDAs to be signed when they have agreed on the team, so that will add more security as well. poke | talk 23:44, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
How does sending out NDAs verify an applicant/tester's age? Or reviewing an account for that matter? To me, it seems like anyone who seems to be over 18 could apply and theoretically be part of this testing krewe. calor (talk) 04:02, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
I would assume they're either going to charge some trivial amount of money like $0.25 on a credit card, then give it back. Otherwise, there will probably be a disclaimer of liability or something. --Jette User Jette awesome.png 14:08, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

guildwars2.com

Hi, are you also responsible for that new (awesome looking^^) website? There seem to be some display errors when viewing the page with Opera. You are hiding some -Tags using margin-left:-9999em; while setting a background-image with a fancier font. These CSS definitions are ignored by Opera because they are too large, causing some elements to be displayed twice (with their background-image and the original text) . Using margin-left:-999em or simplier visibility:hidden seems to fix it for me. I hope you get what I mean... Keep up the good work ;) --Tera 11:23, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

epic trailer is epic

Awesome trailer! Tell everyone at ANet thanks!--Unendingfear User Unendingfear Crane.jpg 17:59, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

You get points for the flashes of concept art and the graphics, both look extremely well-done. I also award points for keeping the same general character design schemes, I noticed humans looks similar to the way they do now, I hope that means we'll be able to create replicas of our current characters. Much of the terrain looks quite inspired as well.
However, I can't help but question the use of Jeremy Soule's music (I am assuming that's who composed the track, it sounds like his stuff) for a trailer; his music makes excellent ambient tracks and is fun to listen to, but usually isn't very "epic," that is to say, it doesn't really raise the hairs on the back of my neck the way some other composers' does. Not saying he's bad or anything, he's actually really good, but he's not the kind of guy whose work you want in a trailer. I also found the voice acting to be lackluster, sounding far too plain, with a rather modern accent. The emotion was there, but the talent, sadly, was not. Another problem was that it didn't really feel like "Guild Wars" to me -- it didn't showcase any of the game's features or gameplay, or even the storyline, instead focusing almost entirely on the environments of the game, many of which were entirely unfamiliar. If I hadn't seen the GW2 URL at the top of the page, I wouldn't have been sure what game it was for, really. There wasn't anything about it that really screamed "this is Guild Wars!" to me; no references to past areas or characters, nothing about what we as players did throughout any of the campaigns, which from what I've seen is what I've felt about the whole game so far -- that it serves a system reset for everything, including the plot and setting, unfortunately.
Overall, the video was entertaining, and I managed to watch it one sitting, which ism ore than I can say for most game trailers. I would have given it an 8 or 9/10 if the purpose of the trailer had been to illustrate the capabilities of the graphics engine, as no one can deny that the game is visually impressive, especially for an MMO, a genre that has been suffocated by terrible graphics. As it is, however, it lacks cinematic flair, and I can only award 5/10 -- it leaves me wondering "what is this game about?" which a trailer really never ought to do, and there's no climax to the video, no sense of anticipation, no glimpse of the plot; just a graphical preview, some pretty ambient music, and an extremely vague promise that the players will get to do something important, but the idea "somebody does something!" could be used as a summary for virtually every story told throughout history.
Anyhoo, just my two cents. --Jette User Jette awesome.png 18:45, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
The same could be said for the Factions trailer, which, if I remember rightly, just had a coupla' people fighting Shiro. It works well as a teaser and after two years of silence, you could've shocked everyone with a just screenshot, so a full-blown, concept-come-advert is much appreciated. On the other hand, I agree with Jette. The music could/should've had a more triumphant feel and the voice-over, whilst suitable, could've been much more effective. Overall, I'm pleased that we've got something, the community, myself included, was getting impatient. Thanks for more than a shiney 2, --Alex User AlexEternal Mr Bear.jpgEternal 18:52, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
It was definitely a great trailer, although the only thing I have to agree with Jette here on was the music lol. Stuff like the WoW opening cinematics have such epic music that just make the hairs on your back stand straight up. Everything else was great too!!! :D DarkNecrid 19:04, 20 August 2009 (UTC)
Actually, the same couldn't be said for the Factions trailer. It had whatstheirnames and Vizu fighting Shiro, which was a pivotal event in the storyline of Factions. --Jette User Jette awesome.png 19:09, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

It least it wasn't a completely and utterly misleading teaser. I say bravo on the trailer, showed us just enough to make sure we pay attention to the next one. (Satanael 13:34, 24 August 2009 (UTC))
Lol, Galil xD poke | talk 13:47, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
No plot Jette? Doesn't the fact that it mentioned Zhaitan, the risen Orr, and the undead hordes made it rather obvious? It also mentioned that the races have to unite against a common foe. You can't rate the Factions trailer above this teaser trailer based on the criteria you listed above (which, honestly, fails the majority of cinematic trailers ever produced by any MMO). -- ab.er.rant User Ab.er.rant Sig.png 14:01, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
w0rd... that alone tells us everything we need to know. Lich Dragon will be the only main Foe in the first chapter. Thus FotM for the first year will be Holy Damage. Thus n00bs will attempt to use their same PvE builds in World-PvP. So all your n00b-Pwning gameplay will be best off centered around countering Smite Shitters. (pretty much just like the first year of GW1, lolamirite?) ...The only difference is you'll be able to bunnyhop in this one and it's a safe bet that there won't be any snares in any of those shitters' lolbad builds. --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 21:22, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

Around here we're at the end of an epidemic of swine flu, and given how most people with it leave work for seven days, almost everything here is being delayed. I'm sure it's not as bad up there, but still, with all the GW2 news, you must be one of the busiest persons in Arena Net right now, given how you deal with both GW1 and GW2.
