Anti-Proxy code

According to your last patch notes, you've added code to detect and block open proxies. While I won't get into how you separate open proxies from ISP's proxies, I was wondering if it would be possible to get a gateway to the wiki running this code (assuming it's server-side)? There's nothing more annoying than seeing a user get banned, then having him/her back again within 1-2 minutes over and over. — Galil Talk page 03:43, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Pretty sure we had a discussion about blocking open proxies on the wiki as it is something we are able to do, but chose not to. I'll try and dig up a link. --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 18:04, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Bah beat me to it by like 20 seconds :P --LemmingUser Lemming64 sigicon.png 18:09, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Hiya guys! I think that differences in how users hit and log into the wiki may prevent us from being able to loop the wiki into the same open proxy blocking system as the game, but I'll raise the question with the folks directly working on the project. It may be something we could investigate in the future, though. Until then, using a system similar to Wikipedia may be the way to go, although their system (from what I know about it) is extremely time consuming and not altogether reliable.
When I bring up the topic, I'll also loop our IT team in and see if there is anything they can recommend to stop open proxy raiders. Out of curiosity, how often do you guys run into people that get upset over blocks and try to evade until they get bored/tired? Is it frequent or more sporadic? --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:17, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
We have some bots which always come back again (either with other IPs or with the same after they are unblocked) but for normal vandals they normally give up after some tries when they see how fast we block and revert ;) So atm I don't think we really need something against open proxies. poke | talk 20:27, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
I caught the head of the project in the hall, and he confirmed that we're unable at this time to tie the two systems together. He also recommended trying to adopt a system like Wikipedia has in place if the need is there. My observations are similar to yours, poke. Most human users just get bored with evading after a while. If you guys ever run into a really bad situation where a bot just won't stop vandalizing, pass it on to me. I'll pass it onto IT with escalated importance and see if there is anything they can do on our end to stop them. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:51, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

I'd fully support that extension, even if it was something that could only be activated when needed. I think I might revive that talk page again. — Galil Talk page 22:33, 20 March 2008 (UTC)

Brief wiki outage coming!

Hiya everyone! I just got an email from our IT folks saying that they'd like to take the wiki down for some maintenance on Monday (March 24). They said they'll be doing it from approximately 2:00 AM Pacific until 6:00 AM Pacific, so the wiki will most likely be unavailable during those times. I am going to get an outage notice on the website and post it on the wiki bugs page, but I'll leave it to guys to decide whether one of the dismissable site notices should go up about the scheduled downtime or not :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 00:34, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Haha, someone already beat me to it. You guys are pro :) Oh, and as a sidenote, I checked with the team about whether the update will include the version update here. Unfortunately, it won't. They are doing something to the way we back up data, and mentioned that the maintenance is "in preparation for the wiki update". So, they'll be doing the update soon, but not on Monday. Don't worry, I pester them almost daily about it, so there's no chance it's going to be forgotten :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 01:09, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Hiya Emily. One of my wiki buds, Sum Mesmer Guy, has started a hall of records for the Guild Wars Wiki. We are trying to fill it with accomplishments of the Guild Wars Wiki and the history. Guild Wars Wiki - a "Guild Wars website"?

Hello, Emily, could I direct you to a discussion at Help:Ask_a_wiki_question#GWW_on_the_eyes_of_Anet... about whether the wiki counts as an official Guild Wars website according to the Rules of Conduct? Guess what's coming?

I just got word that we'll be doing that super requested version upgrade for this wiki on Wednesday, April 9! I'm told that it's going to take place from 5am - 7am PST (which makes me really glad that I'm not IT...ick). I'm going to work on getting the network news onto the site, so we should probably get something up here too to warn folks about the downtime. Speaking of, sorry about the bit of downtime this morning. I've been out sick for a few days with the flu (again), and I came in to a few emails about it. I guess we filled up one of our wiki servers and something prevented it from sending out a "help, I'm almost full" warning. We should be back to normal now though. Anyways, look forward to Wednesday! They seem to have fixed the favicon as well as the background now :) --Kakarot Talk 15:47, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Heya guys! I was just told by IT that we didn't upgrade directly from 1.9.2 to 1.12 because there have been reported issues with this particular combination of upgrades. Since it's the newest version, they're going to go ahead and get 1.12 up on our test environment and make sure that nothing's going to blow up on either wiki before it gets pushed live. I'll double check and see if we have an ETA on the 1.11 to 1.12 upgrade. In the meantime, keep an eye out for broken stuff so I can pass it along. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 18:39, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Thanks Emily! It might be interesting for the IT that they should use the current development version instead of 1.12. See also this note:
"MediaWiki is now using a "continuous integration" development model with quarterly snapshot releases. The latest development code is always kept "ready to run", and in fact runs our own sites on Wikipedia.
Release branches will continue to receive security updates for about a year from first release, but nonessential bugfixes and feature developments will be made on the development trunk and appear in the next quarterly release."
poke | talk 18:48, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Sure thing, Poke. That's pretty sweet that they'll just do rolling security updates and sit on feature released until the quarter. It will make it much easier to handle keeping both wikis current, especially when we make the jump into multiple language sites. It's frustrating when you go through all the steps to upgrade to the new version and then see a new one pop up right afterwards. Anyways, I'll pass it along :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:03, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Favicon redux

User Tanetris favicon problem.jpg

Somehow it seems our favicon has gone back to the non-transparent one. Also, while on the subject, is it possible for GW2W's favicon to get transparentified? Thanks much. - Tanetris 20:56, 9 April 2008 (UTC)

Doh! Thanks for catching that, Tanetris. I'll see what happened, and ask about a transparent GW2W one. I thought we had one in place, but I think there may be plans to redesign the icon, so that may be why it slipped. I'll do some checking, though. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 21:23, 9 April 2008 (UTC)
Hiya again! I was chatting with IT a bit earlier, and they took a look at the icon. It seems to be the same transparent one that was there before. To be 100% sure, I re-sent the one we made, and they replaced it again. I wonder if it's a caching thing? Are you still seeing the wrong one on this wiki? --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 02:11, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
It appears to be good now, thanks. Lord Belar 02:33, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
See the screenshot on the right. Notice there are 5 tabs of Opera (2 individual ones near the center and a cluster of 3) that have the old transparent icon; these are pages I haven't reloaded since before the wiki upgrade. The cluster on the right and the one all the way to the left that aren't transparent are all pages I've either refreshed or newly opened since the upgrade. - Tanetris 02:38, 10 April 2008 (UTC)
It's working fine for me in FF2. I'll take a screen if you want. And you have way too many tabs. Also, the IRCabal would like to advise you to close those porn sites rather than blacking them out. :P Lord Belar 02:45, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Well, that's really weird. I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this, since some people are seeing the transparent and others aren't (and there's just one favicon on the server). I'll do some investigation and see if there would be a logical explanation for Opera users not getting the proper transparency, especially since it seemed to work before the update. I'll pull down Opera and see if it does it to me too. Sorry about the icon, Tanetris. That's pretty bizarre. :/ --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 19:08, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

To help people check whether they're experiencing the issue or not, I've set up a quick page on my site that simply displays the GWW favicon.ico on a gray background: http://aiiane.net/gwwicon.html
For me, at least, that displays a non-transparent version (with a white square behind the shield) for the wiki icon, while the main Guild Wars site favicon displays fine, with transparency. I'm using Firefox 3 Beta 5. Go to Aiiane's Talk page (Aiiane - talk - contribs) 22:20, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

I'm now getting a non transparent version as well, but, as you can see from my above screen, I was getting it before. Lord Belar 01:50, 15 April 2008 (UTC)
Probably just your browser caching the icon - since favicon.ico usually doesn't change much, "well behaved" browsers are supposed to not request a new download of it that often, so old ones will often stick around for a bit. The reason my page looks like Emily's is basically because I didn't know anything about wiki coding before (I've always been more of a programmer than a design guy - I just hate CSS :P) so borrowing Emily's page design was just convenient. Plus, she fully agreed of course ;) I might change the colours though, good idea ^^ --Julien Crevits 10:40, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
Hey, I'm not ashamed to admit that I totally stole Emily's page layout. --Regina Buenaobra User Regina Buenaobra sig.png 01:39, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
There really is nothing wrong with a few people using it, especially if they are using slightly different colours or even different layout as Lem has done, the annoying part is when it seems that almost every single new user is using that layout as has happened with Lensor's. --Kakarot Talk 01:55, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
Oh man. What's everyone going to do when I get off my butt and remake my userpage? o_O --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 03:17, 26 April 2008 (UTC)
Probably take that too :P -- scourge 03:22, 26 April 2008 (UTC)

Funny - I didn't notice before because I only stole -moz-border-radius for rounded corners in firefox and did my own coloring and CSS (its probably apparent I don't design for a living), but it makes the page look completely ripped off. I'll do buttons instead of tabs, just to be original (or retro) ;) --Falseprophet 22:11, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Weird Microsoft-IIS 5 Server

Thanks Bob! I've passed the thread along to IT to look over. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:55, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

Page counter

Hi Emily, could you have a look at this discussion, and possibly see why the page-counter no longer appears at the bottom of each page? Thanks in advance. :) Biscuits User Biscuits sig.png 18:19, 27 April 2008 (UTC)

Sure thing! I'll check up on that for you guys. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:55, 29 April 2008 (UTC)

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but...

The Editcount extension would make determining eligibility to vote in elections much, much easier :) ¬ Wizårdbõÿ777(talk) 02:48, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

Shouldn't this be in GWW:TECH ? ~ KurdUser Kurd sig.png 07:30, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
Wasn't aware that existed. Thanks for pointing me to it :) ¬ Wizårdbõÿ777(talk) 23:14, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
And wow. I'm on the slow computer and GWW has lag, so... I hit save once and edit conflicted myself >.> ¬ Wizårdbõÿ777(talk) 23:16, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

ArenaNet namespace

As we are moving forward with this namespace, we would love som input from ArenaNet people on what your ideas could be for this namespace. If you have a specific idea you want to implement there, or a part of your userspace that would fit better into that part of the wiki (this might relate more to bug reports and similar, I guess), please tell us :) Discussion is mostly centralized at ArenaNet talk:Portal at the moment. - anja talk 12:53, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Sure, Anja. The topic has come up over here more than a few times, and we're definitely in support of the project. When I get caught up on some stuff, I'll pop over and see if there is anything meaningful I can contribute to the conversation. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:53, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Aww, thanks :) It's comical that you posted this when I was away on a business trip and couldn't respond faster. Oh well. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:52, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Back from the Future

Hi Emily! I've been away quite a long time! Did you know about the wiki engine completing missing tag?? (for example

's one?). Yes... I'm always trying to do some tricky thing with wiki syntax ^^! See ya -- M'vy | user | talk | -- 20:18, 20 May 2008 (UTC)
Hiya M'vy! Nope, unfortunately I'm not sure what you mean. Are you saying that the wiki will close incomplete html tags? Sorry I'm confused :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:42, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Loss of session data bug

Sorry to bug you, Emily, but the GW2W has the session data bug as well, I don't know how you guys fixed it here, but if it could be fixed there, it would be much obliged. Thanks, (Scratch that, it just happened on THIS wiki to me. :P) UserDrago-sig.gif Drago 01:19, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Hiya Drago! I passed this problem on before I left for Texas, and it should be resolved. If it's still happening, let me know and I can re-open the issue. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:39, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

User:Blu2cloud and lag

Hey Emily, I saw your unblock of that user on recent changes. Could you inform the team that whenever they need to make random edits, the Guild Wars Wiki:Sandbox is always available -- random testing on "live" pages which are likely to get lots of viewing isn't really a good idea, whereas the sandbox will provide for them a free testing ground to edit randomly.

Also, the wiki's been kinda laggy recently (even now as I type this message). It happens rather randomly, even at times when it would be unlikely to receive more editors/viewers than usual.. Anyway, just wanted to let you know about that, and thanks. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 20:14, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Definitely duly noted, Brains. I've sent off a few emails about the first topic. Also, we're working on a substantial hardware upgrade for the wikis, so better sailing for live build days is coming soon :) --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 20:31, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
Sounds great, Emily. Also, please feel free to inform any staff members that if they do need to test something that the sandbox isn't adequate for, they're more than welcome to leave a note on GWW:NOTICE to let the sysops know and prevent accidental blocks ahead of time. :) Go to Aiiane's Talk page (Aiiane - talk - contribs) 20:34, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
Glad to see a fix for the lag coming :) Dominator Matrix 22:11, 31 May 2008 (UTC)

Subpaging and the ArenaNet namespace

Could you get the IT guys to turn on subpaging in the ArenaNet namespace? I thought I recalled the request being put in, but judging from things like ArenaNet:Localization_bugs/French it doesn't seem to be active yet. Thanks! Go to Aiiane's Talk page (Aiiane - talk - contribs) 22:18, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Also please rename the "ArenaNet Talk" to "ArenaNet talk" again, please :) Seems as if someone messed that up :P poke | talk 22:20, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
Sure thing! These probably got reverted in one of the updates. I'll put in a request for this to be fixed. --UserEmilyDiehlStar.gif Emily Diehl (talk) 22:22, 29 May 2008 (UTC)
