ArenaNet cannot override that. If they could then there would be an increased potential for security vulnerabilities or item spawning exploits etc. You are now the proud owner of a Strength Helm and that won't change until you sell or destroy it. -- WarBlade 15:04, 1 July 2009 (UTC)

Personally, I think all warrior helms should be changed to Item's Attribute + 1, that way you don't have to buy multiple versions of the same helmet, and things like this could be avoided. (Satanael 17:53, 1 July 2009 (UTC))
We all wish all helms were like that, but they aren't, so just go buy a bunch of EotN helms if you have a problem with it. ups. ··· danny 18:05, 1 July 2009 (UTC)
Actually, I think the ele helms should stay as they are, since they look different depending on their attribute. (Satanael 18:13, 1 July 2009 (UTC))

Sad stuff

Hi Gaile, recently while GvG'ing and talking on Ventrilo as most GvG guilds do, we started to talk about the whole Chinese banning gold farming situation. In doing so, a friend of mine posted something like: www.omfgletsallhackguildwarsandgetmoney.com in all chat in our guild hall (meaning 8 people including himself saw the message). Although he was just joking around, someone in the party must have reported him as a joke... and it resulted in him getting permanently banned for advertising. He meant no harm whatsoever and only eight people saw what he posted, it's not like he did it in Kamadan or Great Temple. He tried to appeal and keeps getting what seems to him to be automated responses. I'm wondering if you can help out at all in some way. He even said that he would accept a two week ban or whatever other punishment you may need to pursue on him. I've sent a ticket to support and it seems as if their not even reading what I'm writing. Ref #090630-001887 --'ÑöĭƑýtalk 13:47, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Sorry but I don't think that ban is getting reversed. It looks like a hacksite and he's advertising it. Even though it's not real, it still looks like a hacksite, and therefore earns a ban. --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:72.43.62.68 (talk).
Are you Gaile Gray? If not, I'd like her response. --'ÑöĭƑýtalk 14:54, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
That's completely ignoring intent, though. 69.109.160.206 17:29, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
If I start up a fake gold-selling site as a joke and advertised it, do you think I wouldn't get banned? Not to say that it doesn't necessarily deserve an un-ban, but you probably ought to be able to prove that you weren't being serious. ··· Danny Pew Pew 18:06, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
The main point is that 8 people saw this, not 500 or however many Kamadan holds. And also, the sites not even real!--'ÑöĭƑýtalk 18:22, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
Point is, it's not ArenaNet's job to verify if someone is actually selling gold. It's only they're job to make sure people aren't doing it. ··· Danny Pew Pew 18:26, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
It is ArenaNet's job to make sure that they don't interpret what, given context, is quite clearly not serious, as something serious. However, this is really a matter for ArenaNet to deal with, and doesn't require much in the way of wiki user comment. So why don't we just let it be and let ArenaNet respond as they choose? Go to Aiiane's Talk page (Aiiane - talk - contribs) 18:37, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
Fair point, and I'm sure the ban will be overturned, but given the number of reports that come in daily, one can hardly expect Support to attempt to determine context every time. Something that looks like a gold advertisement, similar to the dozens, if not hundreds, that are reported every day, could easily be mistaken. I hardly think the ban was out of line, but I certainly think the account should be reinstated. ··· Danny Pew Pew 18:43, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
Suppose I was at an airport in US and joked aloud about how I have a bomb in my suitcase or whatever, I'd be arrested before you can blink. How this is different aside from life-threatening of the situation? It's unfortunate but perhaps the friend in the question should think twice next time he or she shout something like that in-game. Not exactly smart thing to say something like that in an environment where there's tools for people to report a such thing. If Anet does reinstate the account, I sure hope the player learns his lesson - we can't expect the Support to run around and investiage every single report. – User Barinthus Magical Compass.png Barinthus 18:47, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
Someone had a little bit too much hyperbole in his coffee today, though he makes the same point I do. ··· Danny Pew Pew 18:49, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
The thing is, Barinthus, after being arrested you would be scolded and released. So your analogy is actually saying the opposite of what you want. Unless the person in question looks Middle Eastern. Then they would be "perma-banned." 99.142.46.39 19:27, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
lolwut? You get jail time for even pretending you have a bomb. Guess you don't watch the news much. ··· Danny Pew Pew 19:33, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
Joking about bombs in airports or fires in crowded theaters are illegal because they're a potential danger to public safety (due to inciting panic). That's not really relevant to talking about gold selling in an online game. Go to Aiiane's Talk page (Aiiane - talk - contribs) 19:51, 2 July 2009 (UTC)
If I told you I become panicked when confronted with gold-selling advertisements, would you buy it? :> ··· Danny Pew Pew 20:14, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

This is an interesting one! I cant wait to see what Gaile has to say! 24.188.207.20 01:06, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
I really don't think he should've gotten banned if it was between a very small number of people and done in a jokey way. I can also verify that the site doesn't even exist, so I don't know how you'd get illegal gold at all! --smøni 14:24, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
That didn't deserve a ban due to the circumstances, only a possible suspension. But again, you can't expect Support to check all these sites and see how many people heard the statement, they get a lot of these reports (4,000 bot bans each month alone!). Just goes to say how much you can trust the supposed 8 people that heard it. I think submitting a Support request to investigate could possibly get this reversed into a suspension. Fat chance. --Tha Reckoning 19:46, 7 July 2009 (UTC)

(Reset indent) I'm sorry it took me a few days to answer -- I have been traveling. I do honestly believe that if there were no extraordinary circumstances in this situation, an appeal to Support is in order. Perhaps your friend has already heard back and all is well; perhaps there is more to this situation than it appears. I can check on this, but not until next week, so I'd encourage your friend to chat with Support, explain the matter as clearly as possible, and await their response. I doubt he's getting "automated responses" beyond the first one, but these matters sometimes do need to go through a few levels of review. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 20:49, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Cupcakes in Dragon Festival...?

When I was trading in my tokens for creme brulees, I saw that you could trade in tokens for Birthday cupcakes... wich I found very wierd, since It doesn't say that on the wiki or homepage, OR on the website... Guild Wars Play Now Key

I recently stumbled across my ol' Nightfall pre-release CD. You know, I don't think I ever actually checked the contents of the disc, all those great wallpapers, and Nightfall soundtrack... a treasure trove! But I digress.

In addition to the Nightfall Bonus Key, the little Access Key Booklet also has a "Play Now" key, for 10hrs/14day Prophecies and Factions access. I never used it, since I already had all the previous chapters. Is it permitted to give this key to my friend so I could introduce him to the game?

Thanks much. --Ralmon the Gen-- 15:16, 3 July 2009 (UTC)

I don't think so, I think the play now is only for a current account, a TRIAL key could be given, but if I remember when I got my play now key, i had to use it on my already active account. Dervish-tango-icon-20.pngDevi Talk 15:46, 3 July 2009 (UTC)
Funny thing...I came across an UNOPENED Prophecies pre-order box while cleaning out my closet today...interesting bit of history in the differences in the artwork. Probably wind up to be a collector's item...like some old school weapons that don't drop anymore. If I send it in Gaile, do you think I could get it autographed by the team??? That would really be a nice keepsake. AnClar 00:44, 4 July 2009 (UTC)
@devi59:What you say might be possible, but it seems to also make sense for them to provide an incentive to people without the first 2 chapters, so they buy more than just Nightfall. That being said, I finally actually read all the text in the booklet (I'm so lazy): Add this key to your existing Guild Wars account, ..., or give it to a friend and go explore...
I guess my revised question is now whether those pre-release Play Now keys expire after some time.
Gaile, I also sent this in to the web support. Their initial response was that it would be escalated. If I hear back from them, I'll add that info here for the sake of other players with such leftover keys. Cheers! --Ralmon the Gen-- 18:07, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

Update: The support response today states that the Play Now access key can be given to a friend, and should be still valid. They also reiterated the 10hr/14day limitation.

This should make for a nice intro to one of the event weekends, assuming the event is on Tyria or Cantha (for the unused key I found). Too bad we missed this one, but there will be more... Cheers! --Ralmon the Gen-- 04:05, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

Well, it's a fairly well known fact that many many people find the invocation of Hitler offensive. Also please note that this report was filed 2.5 years go. Russia doesn't give half a rat's tail about Napoleon, don't make stuff up. And a public statement like that may have deserved a 72hr suspension at most. Character or guild names mentioning Hitler deserve a rename, but a single statement is a drop in the sea and is hardly enough for a perma-ban. Now, whether there were other infractions adding to his ban, that we will never know. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 20:13, 5 July 2009 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Sorry, I can't really comment on that 3-year-old complaint. You see, I don't have any information that would allow me to look into the matter, such as user name, etc. (I'm also in Vienna, Austria, right now, working on a really slow Internet connection, and that would slow me down a lot, too. :) ) I can state that we would not terminate the account of someone who made a verbal slip-up of the minor nature that the player mentioned. I agree with those who commented above, there is much more to this story than "I said a single sentence and I lost my account." -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 20:34, 9 July 2009 (UTC)

Suspended for RMT! But...

I did not buy any in-game cash for real money! What's going on, why was I banned? Even for 72 hours - but cos' of this I'm missing Shing Jea fest-hat giveaway. Okay, I wrote a support ticket and at the moment waiting for reply. What I'm trying to achieve writing a message here is just an explanation - how can innocent random guy can be banned for RMT? I'm trying not to make a deal with huge amount of money without having to offer something in exchange - except for dung runs, but that's 25-30k from single person, not so much for me to get autobanned I think. And the only 100k+ deals I had recently was selling a mini Gwen Doll for 100k+30e and buying Bow of the Kinslayer for 100k+20e - was I banned for this O.o? Well, I can suppose something like being hacked to transfer in-game cash from one person to another, but that explanation is dumb and is cut off by Occam's razor. So please, answer me why was I banned? ign -> Smokin Marlboro. 95.55.231.183 17:41, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

Please help (2)

moved from User talk:Gaile Gray

This is actually the first time I really had a problem. My account recently got hacked and I am getting no help from the NCsoft support. Normally they gave quick response however, this time, it's taking too long in my opinion and by the time they may contact me, most of the things in my game account might be gone. I tried to reset my password but it directs me always to the NCsoft page and I am resolving my master accounts problem right now (finding the user name and password). So what I'm asking is that can you reset my password and send it to my e-mail. My game account is <details removed - please review policy> which is the same as my hotmail. Thank you in advance. :) Dread slayer 21:54, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

I believe support runs a skeleton staff on the weekends, and this is also a holiday weekend. Gaile herself is, I believe, on vacation in Europe, and won't be back until next week. Your email address and account details have been removed from this page (This is how your accounts get hacked). If you provide Gaile with your support ticket number, there is no personal information available to anyone but the support team. This is why you should read the rules at the top of the page prior to posting. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 22:17, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

Guild problems.

I don't know exactly where to ask this at, so I'll go ask it here. I was sitting in my guild hall for a while this morning, minding my own business. My guild leader hasn't been on all day, and i'm an officer so only he could kick me. I go over to Isle of the nameless to test out asuran scan(I got it the night before, Haven't used it yet. After I'm done with that, I want to map back to my guild hall. But wait! It doesn't show up on the map!. I press G, and It says I don't have a guild. I switch characters, and when I press G, the guild tab is completely blank, Doesn't show the options about guild invites and guest status. I get a friend from another guild to send me an invite, to see if it'll work, and she said that It gave her this message " (my character name)could not be invited because that player is already a member of a guild." I doubt my guild has disbanded, or I have been kicked, because the leader has not been online. And Also i don't think our guild name was offensive to be reported ( Our Guild Is [Cool] )so it can't have been that. I've Tried logging out/logging back in, switching characters, etc. Even my characters that were in my guild hall from before aren't kicked out. It will load Isle of the Dead, empty except for the Henchmen and the Tournament guy. Nothing seems to be working for me though. (EDIT EDIT EDIT) Also, Guild and Alliance chat still appears for me, I can talk in them but the text doesn't show up. Chinese:问题是,如果我有第一章和北方之言的情况下,再购买1+2+3的合集能不能冲进去呢?或者说合集是否有效呢? Thank you! your friend--Weillz 06:02, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Hi there, Weillz. Nice to hear from you. :) I am not quite sure what you are asking, but perhaps it is this: "If I own Guild Wars and Guild Wars: Eye of the North, and I purchase a collection that includes those games, will I install a new game over my existing games? That is, will I 'overwrite' the games and take away all my accomplishments?" " Is that your question? If it is, then the answer is that no, your games will stay as they are, and the collection will only install the games you do not currently own. All your characters, items, gold, etc., will remain for the games you owned before you added the collection.
But please let me know if that is your question, or if I misunderstood. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 02:38, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
Wow, either Gaile is a jedi or she got someone in her office that knows Chinese to tell her what the question was. (Satanael 04:08, 13 July 2009 (UTC))
Jedi? I wish! I took a stab at it -- do you think I'm right? :) -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 05:35, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
It's either that, or he's asking if the trilogy set will make his key for Prophecies valid for a new account. Not sure which.--Pyron Sy 11:53, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
Basically, adding the collection will "waste" his first C1 on the account, as it will be duplicated with no benefit. Adding the collection key will add C2 and C3 access to his account, that is all. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 19:55, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
hi, very glad to see your reply.I am sorry to say in response to slow. I have a plaync account, GW c1 + Eye of the North, if the purchase of collection bag that can recharge to plaync account go?hi,十分高兴看到您的回复,很抱歉回应慢了。是这样子的,我有一个plaync账户,里面有c1+北方之眼,如果在购买合集(1+2+3)那么可以充值进去那个plaync账户吗?--Weillz 05:08, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
There are GWC1 and GWEN in one of my plaync account.Suppose now I charge my account with a collection packet included C1,C2 and C3.Will the account contains C1,C2,C3 and GWEN,or fail because my recharge? If there is the possibility to separate the former guildwarsc1 if I charge my account with a a collection packet?--Weillz 05:28, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
You have Guild Wars Prophecies (C1) and Guild Wars Eye of the North (EotN). You want to add Guild Wars Trilogy (C1 + C2 +C3) to the same account.
  • This will work. The result will be C1 + C2 + C3 + EotN. You cannot separate the extra C1.
Or you can create a second account just for the Guild Wars Trilogy and get this:
  • C1 + EotN on your current account. Your first Guild Wars account not changed.
  • C1 + C2 + C3 for your second Guild Wars account only.
Does that make sense? -- WarBlade 07:11, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
thank you, WarBlade,but I dont want to create a second account.--Weillz 08:27, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Since I understand that you do not wish to create a second account -- and I agree that it is sensible to keep all the games on one accounts -- you can use the new game collection on your existing account. The games that you need will be added; the games that you already have will not be overwritten or touched in any way. We cannot separate the access keys for those games and give them to you; they are special keys that are all tied to a single installation. But what we can do is "void" those keys so that they do not interfere with what you have already accomplished and gained on your account. With that, you'll have the full Guild Wars collection. Enjoy! :) -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 15:57, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

very thank you gaile!good luck ~--Weillz 11:01, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Hero Battle K Value

recent developer update increased k value of gvg and hero battles to 15. hero battles is still 5. update would be appreciated BMShen 12:34, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Probably holding off until they improve the format itself. As it is now, there is no shortage of new players there to require an incentive for ranked games. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 18:24, 10 July 2009 (UTC)
wat. If I read your response right, I think you misunderstood Shen. He means that they increased the K value of all rated matches from 5 to 15 in yesterday's update, but it hasn't actually taken effect in game. ··· Danny Pew Pew 18:32, 10 July 2009 (UTC)
Didn't think they included hero battles in it on purpose. Oops. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 19:27, 10 July 2009 (UTC)
No, they just forgot to increase the k-value of HB.....and change the maps. Wait, wtf did they do in this update again? Karate Jesus 19:37, 10 July 2009 (UTC)
Ignore HB, as they have for eternity? User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 20:56, 10 July 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the report. I will check into this right away. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 00:40, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
Hey Shen, thanks again for the report. To be honest, the lack of increase in HB points was an error in internal communications, and it has been corrected by the team. No build will be necessary to make this change, and I believe you'll start seeing the proper number of points going out starting about, oh, now. ;)
If you hear of any issues after Noon Pacific time today, please do let me know. Again, sincere thanks for the report -- it was very helpful of you to let me know about the situation so we could get it fixed! -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 19:14, 13 July 2009 (UTC)

@ Shen -- Glad to hear that it's working properly now.
@ Karate Jesus -- is there a problem with the rotation? I've not been told of such a thing. Can you explain? Thank you. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 18:41, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

JQ (Kurzick) waiting times.....

Im a very patient guy. & at the same time i understand that PvP servers at times are very limited...fine. but waiting times now are getting in excess of 15mins. I waited 20 mins just now trying to get in & in the end I just gave up. waiting NEVER use to be an issue until the Korean servers got shut down. thats when waiting times increased 10x. & when youve spent 15-20mins waiting & you finally get in 4 in 10 players are leechers & the rest are idiots who carry rez on their skill bars. totally incapable of understanding the general concept of JQ. NOT THAT, THAT BOTHERS ME AT ALL. I just want to get it done n over with then get into the next game with possibly a better team that knows what their doing.

You might not consider this a serious issue for support to take up but it really really needs looking into. Ive spent almost 3 years playing the game. bought & completed all campaigns & expansions, Im not fan of grinding endlessly for titles. I tire of PvE, Everyone wants to do HM & Dungeons. I want to PvP = JQ/FA/AB/RA etc but rather then enjoying myself, Im quickly finding out that im quickly losing whatever spark thats keeping me with Gw when most my friends have already moved on to other games.

PLEASE have a word with support & see if they can fix this or I too may find myself leaving gw for a game which doesnt make me wait 20mins just to get into a game. THANK YOU

84.13.196.81 01:34, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Because the only way to fix it is to get people to join the Luxons? Before the korean servers were shut down the wait time was equally as bad, so I don't see what point you are trying to make anyway. Pika Fan 02:10, 11 July 2009 (UTC)
I was in JQ pretty much every day for 3 months solid for 3-4hrs a day prior to the Korean servers being shut down, the wait was never that long & if that were true then i wouldnt be here complaining about it. 20mins just to get into JQ. thats way too long to wait. 78.149.145.87 02:24, 11 July 2009 (UTC)
I've noticed that they have always been long, and this will make 40 months for me. -- Tha Reckoning User Tha Reckoning Sig.png 02:50, 11 July 2009 (UTC)
This is more of a design issue than a support issue and the issue is that there are usually more Kurzicks in the Fort Aspenwood and Jade Quarry districts than there are Luxons to face off against across the border. Therefore the Kurzicks will wait longer to get into a match. If one side is consistently dominating for a while then their wait times will also increase as the other side grows tired of hitting a brick wall and heads off to other parts of the game. -- WarBlade 06:54, 11 July 2009 (UTC)
the point im trying to make is I find 20mins (or more) of waiting a excessive. Id wait 10mins for game but damn, 20mins plus?? whose happy to sit there for a few rounds of JQ waiting 20mins each time to get in? thats a lot of time gone to waste IMHO, I dont just join for one game, I join for quite a few games, & thats what pisses me off. you spend more time waiting then actually in game which is how it shouldnt be. 78.151.91.87 10:32, 11 July 2009 (UTC)
I don't think you're entirely right, WarBlade, as there have been times where I'd switch sides, and both sides are complaining about waits, with plenty of people on each side wanting to enter. Explain that. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 18:17, 11 July 2009 (UTC)
I've seen similar Rose Of Kali, however on the occasions where I've looked, it's always been a case of determining that the number of people waiting (with Enter Battle clicked and orange messages every 20sec) are probably less than 8 players. Until an 8th joins the battle on the Luxon side 15 players will wait. -- WarBlade 19:47, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

(Reset indent) This doesn't belong here. It's NOT a support issue. So, Gaile probably not going to address this in a manner you're going to appreciate. --User Ezekial Riddle bigsig.pngRiddle 20:29, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Well, Maybe she may know who i could go speak to about it. Im not too confident that something will actually get done about it anyway. but i thought id at least give it a go & see how far It goes. 78.149.254.221 22:39, 11 July 2009 (UTC)
There isn't anything to be 'done' about this, because the problem is purely playerside. There are no 'PvP-servers', so there can't be a shortage of them. As soon as two sides got enough players, a new instance is spawned, which can go on indefinitely. If you go to the Luxon side, you can see groups of people leaving now and then. Also, don't forget not everyone on the Luxon side would have pressed the Enter Mission button. -- Arduinna talk 12:32, 12 July 2009 (UTC)
This is, as others have pointed out, not a support issue. The delays are simply a factor of there not being enough people to play on the one (Luxon) side. However, for the sake of thoroughness, I will check with the Live Team about the concern (as I have in the past) just to make sure there aren't any game issues that we need to address. I strongly doubt that, but I'll check into it and let you know if I discover anything on the subject. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 00:38, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
As far as friends and I have been able to tell from attempts at syncing full teams on each side, it's not an issue with the number of players - 8 players on each side entering at the same time would theoretically have 0 restarts if it were a case about the number of players. Thoughts? (We've even had issues with restarts when syncing 8 man teams into only the Luxon side. =/) ··· Danny Pew Pew 16:21, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
I also remember the big Kurz/Lux faction update of like last year or whenever it was that increased battle rewards and all that. A lot of people (including myself) swarmed to AB and FA right after, but the waiting times were absolutely awful then, too. There was definitely no player shortage on either side. Whatever caused it then is apparently still around. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 22:11, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
It does seem to happen in AB alot also. it gets to a point where theres 3 districts full of people & no ones getting in. 92.27.149.117 13:50, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
I'd naturally assume it would have to do with the number of dedicated servers, but seeing as I have no experience with ArenaNet's network, it's only an assumption. ··· Danny Pew Pew 17:30, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
There is definitely no shortage of servers; that is not a factor in the issue that the OP described. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 18:42, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
Any thoughts on why, even with multiple full districts on each side, it can take countless restarts to enter a match? Just curious - it can take ages on JQ or AB ZQuest days to get a match, which I'd doubt is intentional. I'm probably jumping the gun here since you're probably still waiting to hear back from the Live team, so please don't feel rushed. ··· Danny Pew Pew 19:01, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
I can only assume that there are a lot of people in the outposts but that they are not joining, for whatever reason that may be. Perhaps they're using a bot program that requires certain unmet parameters to rejoin; perhaps they went AFK; perhaps they're part of a number of people hoping to sync, thereby holding off on hitting "join." The team has not responded with any comments that point towards a bug, or even a possible bug, so I'm assuming, again, that the delays are a function of game design and not game mechanics. I will continue to research this, of course. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 16:01, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
Could be game mechanics. If you want to reproduce this, or just see it in action, head to a Luxon or Kurzick AB on a quest day and watch all-chat get flooded with people complaining about the timer restarts. You could see the same thing on either side of JQ for that matter. =p ··· Danny Pew Pew 16:11, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
I'd also like to bring up something a friend just pointed out - in RA you can be forced to sit through multiple timer restarts, especially on quest days. Mathematically, a few people experiencing a single restart would have to happen, but a number of people experiencing multiple restarts hardly seems plausible. ··· Danny Pew Pew 16:21, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
Well - A greater majority of players just sit through it complain about it ingame but dont bother attempting to get a few questions answerd like I have. Ive seen how busy the US districts get for JQ & I can hardly call making some sort of effort to see if they can improve the situation a little hardly a waste of time. I seen countless numbers of people moan about the long waits, but most of them just seem to accept that, thats how it is. but I refuse to. Im not asking to make so we get into a game within a second of clicking enter mission each time but waiting times have to be reasonable & I find waiting 20mins or more laughable. For Example....If RA/HA/GvG took 25mins to get into a game how many players do you think would be up for waiting? RA alone would lose a fair few players - because 20mins wait for a game is excessive92.29.120.244 22:37, 16 July 2009 (UTC)
I've recently been playing on the Luxon side, and I must say, I've had very, very few restarts. The worst was perhaps 3 or 4 consecutive. This leads me to wonder about how the queue system for team selection functions, but again, we'll just have to wait to hear from Gaile and the Team. ··· Danny Pew Pew 17:18, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
The reason there's such long wait times is because everyone plays on the kurz side. The luxon side is 90% bots. --adrin Power Block.jpg 04:49, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
Oh, how witty, except I thought bots always hammer away at "enter battle" because they're meant to farm as much as possible, not keep the Scavenger company... I'd love it if it was all bots on lux, makes for some faster wins on kurz. Alas. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 20:05, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
i'm not blaming anyone, but it's just a known fact about all the bots. it's actually quite an interesting script they've written for them. the fun part tho is when you power spike their roj, then cast your own roj on them, they just stand there. --adrin User Adrin mysig.jpg 20:09, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Minor Account Access Issue

Yesterday, a modest number of Guild Wars accounts were accessed without authorization by a third party. This did not happen through a security breach within Guild Wars; rather, a hacker obtained account credentials through an external source and accessed player accounts using the account/user name and password. A very small number of players had items removed from their accounts, but for the most part, the characters and items were not disturbed in any way.

The Support Team became aware of this situation soon after it began, and team members immediately blocked access to all the accounts in order to protect them from harm. If you find that your account has been blocked, please contact the support Team right away. Team members will help you regain access to your account, after which we are asking that you immediately change the password to help ensure its security in the future.

If you have any questions, our support team will be happy to answer them or you can post a question on this Support Issues page. Thanks. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 17:21, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

This is where that "if you're using a 3rd party program and your refrigerator blows up, don't call us" clause comes into effect. =p ··· Danny Pew Pew 17:30, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
Yes, yes, I believe it is. ;) Well, except we're more than willing to help players regain access to their accounts, so they actually should contact us for that, of course. :) -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 17:32, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
well ofc. i just meant in terms of stolen items. i wonder what program was used to compromise the accounts. =/ ··· Danny Pew Pew 18:28, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
For these cases I think its also best to advise/recommend players to keep their Antivirus/Firewall programs upto date. In any case they will help prevent against malware, the usual trojans & key loggers that are common among 3rd party apps. but as always - if you DO choose to use 3rd party apps, do so at your own risk. you would be suprised how many people ive come across at work that either dont run Antivirus/Firwall protection let alone it being upto date. Remember kids - flys spread disease, so keep yours closed... 78.147.40.100 18:32, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

I hope I'm responding properly on here, and pardon me if I don't. I'm one of those "modest players" Gaile. My guild officers say I logged on 2 days ago when in fact it's been over 4 since I have. @ 78 -- good advice.
@ Lillith -- Thanks for letting me know that all is well with your account. It's great to know by individual experiences like yours that things are moving along promptly. Welcome back! :)
@ 128 -- Man, that's formal wording. "Are you willing to confirm or deny" sounds like something from the historical Watergate hearings. (Just smiling with you here, not taking a dig. :) ) To answer the question, I can say this: We know the game servers are secure; there have been no breaches of Guild Wars or the database. And yet, some players had someone access their account without their authorization and a tiny number had a few items taken. What that seems to add up to is that fact that the hacker gained account credentials (user name, password) from an external source. Was that through the use of or the downloading of a third-party program? We don't know that yet. It seems there could be a few ways that someone could get the info, so unfortunately I don't believe I can answer the question any more completely at this time. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 03:13, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

The Flameseeker Prophecies

Hi Gaile... I've been slowly going through the Prophecies mission with a dervish and got a copy of The Flameseeker Prophecies from Gordon in Lions Arch tonight. Despite having done all the missions up to Frost Gate, Gordon wont let me give him money top add those pages to the book. I checked the discussion page for the Flameseeker Prophecies book on this wiki and noted a few other people stating similar things. Who do I need to contact in regards to reporting this? Thanks! Pkohler01 03:39, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

The Flameseeker Prophecies covers D'Alessio Seaboard to Hell's Precipice missions. The Young Heroes of Tyria (Hard Mode only) is the book that covers entries from Great Northern Wall to Gates of Kryta. -- WarBlade 05:53, 20 July 2009 (UTC)
Yes, that's correct. I've done all of Tyria except everything to the east - meaning except Ascalon. This is what some might call an "ID-10t" error, I had the wrong version of the book. Pkohler01 23:17, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Brief Outage

An issue arose with the servers that caused a disconnect for a couple of thousand players. This happened about 8:15 PM Pacific time (+7 GMT). From all reports, players were able to reconnect immediately or within a few minutes. The cause is being analyzed, but we believe everyone should be good to go now, as there has been no repeat of the disconnects. If anyone is having issues with disconnecting or with being unable to reconnect, please contact support at your earliest convenience. Thanks. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 04:31, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

First, I'm not Linsey. Yes, you have posted on the right page -- please don't bother Linsey with such things -- but let's try to at least get the names right, ok? :)
Secondly, one has to wonder if those who chose the guild name honestly thought the name would not reap natural consequences? The Guild Wars Naming Policy is on the website for all to read, and it's been known for 4+ years that there is no option to rename a guild. (We can't do it; we can't offer it.) I am sorry, but you and your guildies will have to face the consequences of the poor name choice: Reform, and choose a better name. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 04:06, 22 July 2009 (UTC)

Verbal Abuse in Unsupported Languages

moved from User Talk:Gaile Gray

Hello Gaile, I was wondering about the /report feature today when I was reading a discussion about non-English languages being used in chat. Suppose I spot some verbal abuse which is in a language that is not supported by the game (for example, Dutch or Finnish), will reporting this via /report (verbal abuse option) have any effect? I can imagine that is not doable for the reviewers of those reports to go and translate everything, since you need to know which language it is to begin with. Would such a /report be discarded or will it even be considered as abuse of the /report function? And what about using the website to report such an issue? (of course here one could add an English translation of the chatlog) Zophar 20:00, 28 July 2009 (UTC)

I would suggest reporting it but mentioning what language it is and what you believe the meaning to be (as part of your explanation for why you are reporting it). Go to Aiiane's Talk page (Aiiane - talk - contribs) 20:35, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
Agreed, if it's not a supported language, using in-game /report is likely futile. Use the support website and explain what happened. Though, don't get your hopes up. I reported Dupek the Mighty as meaning "@$$hole" in Polish some months ago, with a link to the online dictionary translation of the word, and got a few cookie-cutter replies from support and even one from Gaile herself, but still nothing happened... User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 20:48, 28 July 2009 (UTC)
This brings up a curious topic that I've meant to ask a few times, but was never quite sure about. When it comes to phonetic languages such as Arabic, is it frowned upon to use them (as the native character sets aren't supported)? If not, are there any efforts to eliminate verbal abuse in such languages, or is it largely disregarded? ··· Danny Pew Pew 16:36, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
By phonetic languages, do you mean languages that simply don't use a Latin-based alphabet? I know Japanese, at the very least, has a specific name for when you write out words or sentences in English characters - and there are specific rules (some of them relatively new) for doing so; I would assume, given how common the English language has become, that other languages have similar systems. -- Armond WarbladeUser Armond sig image.png{{Bacon}} 16:55, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
There are hundreds of languages spoken by GW players. It would be very difficult and time consuming for the team to try and keep track of verbal abuse in all of them, as they would need to use online tools to even understand what was said, and then figure out if it was offensive or not, not having any kind of cultural understanding, which is often a key to determining the real meaning. I don't blame them for focusing only on the most popular languages, as the vast majority of players wouldn't even understand the rest. There is, of course, a gray area, such as Dutch, Arabic, Ukrainian and other languages, which are not supported, but still understood by many. They just have to draw a line somewhere. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 17:31, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Actually you can use these languages in some areas. I just tested it and it's no problem to write in Japanese (i.e. real Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji) in Japanese districts as well as in guild and alliance chat. So you don't have to resort to Hepburn romanization there. These special characters are, however, blocked in other districts. Though I would assume that NCSoft support has the asian languages covered (being a Korean company).
However, using romanized Japanese for verbal abuse could actually be a difficult issue for support because the language is full of homophones (words sounding the same but having different meaning (and Kanji)). Tricky business. User Xelonir sig.pngXelonir 19:32, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
For supported languages, /report is fine (although I think a ticket is better). For non-supported languages, the best suggestion I can offer here is to submit a specific support ticket, to include the chat (verbatim) and then offer a translation. Preferably, provide a human translation from a native speaker, not a mechanical translation, since those are often sorely lacking in accuracy and they often contain filters that will block the very words you wish to report. The team may or may not be able to take action on the report of offensiveness in a non-supported language; that may depend on whether they have someone who can verify the translation. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 19:45, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
That seems like a lot of work for something that "may or may not" result in any action. Karate User Karate Jesus KJ for sig.png Jesus 19:47, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
And the decision on whether to take that time is up to the individual player. We cannot possibly offer individual and personal support in the thousands of languages and dialects that exist in the world today. In truth, Guild Wars has language support that exceeds any other game I can think of. What we offer with player issues outside of support languages is an option that may result in action, to the best of our ability. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 19:49, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Oh, I know you guys can't. Hell, no company can afford to do that. I was just saying....you'd have to be really passionate about banning someone to do all of that. Karate User Karate Jesus KJ for sig.png Jesus 19:52, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
/Chuckle -- Tha Reckoning User Tha Reckoning Sig.png 21:44, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Yes, KJ, you're right. I wish it was easier to zap the offenders who hide behind non-supported languages, but it's just not that easy. Still, the team will do its best to resolve such issues, whenever that is possible. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 22:00, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Rose -- Dupek is a offensive word in the Polish language. And you should know that the word is not in the Polish-language version of the game. Here is how I understand it: The team does not intend to change the spelling of words that have no meaning -- that are just random letters or sounds -- in languages other than the one(s) in which the word or name is truly an issue. The team will change the word or name in the specific language in which it is an issue. To make a silly but hopefully helpful example: The word "foot" may be offensive in a dialect within the language of Mooslevinia. If we supported Mooslevinian, we'd change it and that would address the issue in the relevant language. However, we would probably not remove "foot" from the English-language game. :)
I want to say that, silly example aside, I am not trivializing the report. I am simply trying to cast it within the broader perspective, and I hope that the information is helpful in understanding the outcome of those particular reports. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 02:36, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
Ok, gotcha, they never said anything like that to me. I'm gonna check the Polish version just to make sure. That aside, I posted a question on your support page as to why this Dupek ticket was merged with my XTH missing points ticket. O_o They are completely unrelated. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 03:58, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
Not quite sure it works this way or may be the dictionnaries have not been updated accordingly for some languages in the earlier part of the game. For exemple take the French version of the boss Dwayna's Cursed (Rock of Perdition), in French its name is "Damnés de Dwayna" but for some reason the first part of the name is censored as "___és de Dwayna", just because "Damn" appeared to be censored in English. And this is quite odd as "damné" is not a sworn word nor context sensitive in French at all...
On the other hand, there are some issues with more recent text as for some reason "Rock Candy" (in French "Sucre candi") was translated into "Sucette" (in English "Lolipop"), but "suce" IS censored as the verb "sucer" means "to suck" (and can be mis-used in the same ways than in English) so everytime someone exchange such item or ping with CRTL when taking one on the floor ("vous voyez <char name> ramasser des ____tte vertes") or when clicking on its effect ("je suis sous l'effet d'un décharge de ____tte rouge"), we get official text written censored... I pointed that issue some time ago on the French localization issues pages but the translation team said everyting was fine... go figure...

Rofl, that's just hilarious. Yet, the Damned Clerics still reign supreme. :P (Don't they? I don't know, turned off my chat filter like 3 years ago...) The Damned Clerics get filtered too! :D User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 05:35, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
Captain Quimang is apparently Captain ----ang if the filter is on, and there's a bad word in there I'd never even heard of until I started a new toon in Factions on another account... Oo -- User Elveh sig.png Elv 07:12, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Merged Tickets

So what does an offensive boss name have to do with the missing XTH points?

Sorry to disappoint, I don't have an answer, but GM Silverhawk must know something I don't, because he decided to merge my tickets. One was for reporting Dupek the Mighty as offensive in Polish (it means A**hole), which I updated today, and the other was an old one for my missing XTH rewards... So uh... why were they merged? O_o And why is Dupek still... smelly? Incident # 090619-000796 (XTH) and # 090415-002116 (Dupek). User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 01:03, 29 July 2009 (UTC)

I would estimate there was an error made in merging the tickets. Perhaps you asked about the one in the other and it was misunderstood. Please ask Support to assist you with these issues and, if appropriate, with the separation of the tickets. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 21:46, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
Should I even bother? You already explained why Dupek's name was not changed, and that's fine (though I see a lot of Polish people playing in American districts quite regularly, but I guess that's their problem, not yours, the Polish localized verson of the boss' name is inoffensive and meaningless as was proven to me on my talkpage by a caring wikian). The XTH ticket doesn't really matter, as it seems like once the XTH itself is fixed, everyone will get equal treatment regardless of whether they submitted at ticket or not. So yeah, I pretty much don't care anymore, just let them expire. It really bugged me that they got merged, as it makes absoutely no sense, you had to be rather tired (or kind of loony) to mix them up. And I submitted my update on the correct ticket number, I did not mix anything up, because I replied to the email between the green **** lines and it was titled correctly and had conversation history in it. But support seems to be in over their heads for a while now, so I'll just leave them alone, this isn't worth pursuing. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 05:28, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

First, please never send multiple support tickets on a single matter. Please always simply update your ticket, if you need to add information!
Secondly, for an issue like this, I need to let the Support Team review the issue and reply. This is because sometimes someone says they are not RMT but the team has very clear proof that they are. And sometimes they see an account is logging in from an RMT location and that causes the account closure. In that case someone may say "I am not RMT!" but if the team has seen 50 RMT accounts logged in from the same location, they will take action on all accounts at that location. If you are not an RMT worker, or if you are an RMT worker who is playing on a personal account, than you need to play from somewhere other than the RMT location.
Please update one of your tickets, do not submit any new tickets, and wait for the response of the Support Team. If they have given you the final response, they will not answer more tickets. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 19:17, 25 July 2009 (UTC)

Normal game play of the storyline will not get your account banned, however, if you are simply killing the same thing over and over for hours at a time, it will most likely appear to the support team as botlike behaviour and can potentially lead to the loss of your account. This type of farming is not necessary to get the items for your character that you need to be able to play. While I know it seems harsh to say "This subject is closed," and I understand you'd like to appeal to the emotions of those reading this page in making it seem that you have not been listened to, that you've been unjustly accused, even that you've been discriminated against. Faction Point Problems

problems in game this weekend that i have never had

i emailed tech support but thought you might know or could help too. this weekend I and alot (and i do mean alot) of other people playing lost faction points when they transferred them to their alliance. i earned over 70k and lost 20k in transferring. today everyone in aspenwood kept getting logged out in PvP battle there and when they logged back in recieved a dishonorable. This happened to me also i was logged out 6 times in 1 hour the last time i recieved dishonorable. that time 3 other people got logged out at the same time in my party and they all recieved dishonorable also and they said they were missing faction points they transferred also. My guild has 10 alliances and 3 million + faction points i went to alliance chat to talk to them and the same thing was happening to alot of them also. is there anything you can do? i had a problem with a skill missing awhile back and emailed game support and it took almost 2 months to hear back. any help or suggestions at all would be greatly appreciated. I told some of them to email game support i don't know if they did i know everyone in my guild has. thanks--User Jenniffercohen sig.pngJenn 03:42, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Hello, Jenn. I relayed your report to members of the Guild Wars team. Some of those members were in the game this weekend and did not experience the difficulties you have reported here. In addition, a staff member conducted an informal poll of players and none of them had the problem, either. In addition, we tested the game and there were no issues. So at this point, we can only conclude that there is no bug, and that whatever took place was limited in scope to just a few people. The team will be watchful for additional reports, but so far, there are none. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 22:11, 29 July 2009 (UTC)
Ok thank you for your help. I know 2 other of my guild members reported it to them and several alliance members. it hasn't happened since this last weekend. The last time it happened at least to me I was in a party in FA and 4 members of my team got logged completely out including me and when we got logged back in we all recieved dishonorable and we were all missing faction points. I starte with 90k of faction to transfer and only was able to do the remaining 70k. I sent in a report to both tech support and bug report but didn't even get the automated response back. 2 other guild members reported it too and only one of them got the automated response it had been recieved. In a year and 1/2 of playing this is the first time anything like that has happened and it was happening to alot of people in FA not sure about anywhere else and they were all getting dishonorable when they logged back in and also missing faction they were talking about it in the chat. I personally haven't been logged out since Monday but today some of our alliance's said they still were. Thanks for your help and if you find out anything please let me know. have a nice day.--User Jenniffercohen sig.pngJenn 01:30, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for that extra info. I know the team will be watching for any additional reports. No idea what was going on, but I'm hopeful it's a one-time glitch and we'll never see it again. :) (Oh and I note you did not get a response for one ticket. That could be because the two tickets were merged. You see, you never need to fill out multiples, we'll route them to multiple teams internally, if need be. However, perhaps you can share the Incident or Report numbers so I can check on that?) -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 02:12, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

I was just following up on this today, and I notice that you were asking for the replacement of missing Faction points. I wanted to reiterate what the Support Team told you: None of us -- support team member or dev -- has the capacity to replace Faction points. The game code doesn't allow for their generation, just as it doesn't allow for the spawning of items or gold. I appreciate that it is a difficult thing to accept their disappearance, but perhaps you'll some small comfort from knowing that this is a very, very unusual situation and it has not affected others in any significant number. I am sorry that we were not able to give you a different answer. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 02:20, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

I'm not sure if I understand your question exactly, but here's some information that maybe can help:
The User Agreement says that if you were banned on one account, you are NOT allowed to purchase another account without special permission from ArenaNet. If you were banned for a good reason, then bought a second account, and got banned again, it's because they found out that you are the same person and banned the second account because of the first. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 18:02, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
Weillz -- I have read the tickets. Sadly, you have misquoted me multiple times, and seem to believe that you can force a decision in your favour by using my name. (That is, by the way, a common practice with RMTs.) I did not at any time tell you to demand the records that resulted in the account block. I told you to discuss the matter with Support, but you will not be given access to private information. I also did not say that I believed the case that you made. My position in the matter is neutral.
When you say such things, you put me in a very awkward position and you only serve to confuse the matter. Please do not use my name in trying to resolve this or future issues with Support. Please do not come to me or to any ArenaNet staff member with issues of this kind. I cannot and will not get involved in these tickets. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 18:36, 1 August 2009 (UTC)
--Weillz 04:19, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
--Weillz 04:21, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
我很抱歉使用你的名字在申述中力求获得他们的信任,但以后我将使用中文来与你们进行交流。--Weillz 04:22, 2 August 2009 (UTC)

dun b& meh

Uh, hi. Recently, I broke into ANet's HQ and took all your source codes and such for the game DOWNLOADED A DIRECTX PROGRAM ONLINE. YES. That is what I did, not pirate the game and take some of your sodas. I'm using said program to capture the 3-D models used in-game, in a method quite similar to how TexMod captures textures used on said 3-D models (this program can actually do both, which is cool, but completely beside the point). I may eventually use them to do wacky stuff like render a bunch of Mallyx next to a pile of bananas or something, but for the moment I'm just trying to help with the render project by putting the models on a blank white background and onto the wiki, to save Emily some trouble and speed up the process (poorly done example here). So far I've been doing it on my secondary account that doesn't get much use and served little purpose other than collecting minis right now, so if I get banned it's not too much of a loss, but for a lot of stuff I'll need to use my primary account, which I don't want banned. So, my question is thus: given that I am using the program purely for the positive benefit of the community and not trying to do anything stupid like use the copyrighted models in other games, will I get banned for using this program? Moreover, if I get banned for this program, how long will that ban be? To be honest, I doubt you guys will even be able to detect my usage of it since it functions with DirectX rather than Guild Wars itself, but I know you have bot detection stuff and seeing a guy run around logging in and out on a bunch of characters pressing the F5/6/7 keys real fast might be sorta fishy. --Jette User Jette awesome.png 12:09, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

ArenaNet reserves the right to kittenstomp your account at any time for using 3rd party programs. Just appeal to Support if you do catch the hammer and it'll probably get sorted out quickly. ··· Danny Pew Pew 14:48, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

contacting support would be your best option to find out why your having your account problems. I highly doubt Anet is having a vendetta against an array of accounts based on geographic location. I would suggest to keep the conversation civil even if you are mad as it does not help any conversation involving conflict. MrPaladin talk 13:53, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
I sympathize with this person, because it sounds like he is getting all the same generic response from support (he listed 4 different GMs) and no explanation why. He firmly believes he did not use a bot and wants to know what bot they claim he used. While Anet is not required to give you this info, at the same time I can see just how frustrating this must be. Unfortunately, Anet does not seem to officially support GW in China, mainly because of the extreme RMT coming from there, and buying GW to play in China was one of the "buy at your own risk" kind of things. Gaile is a very caring and respectable person, but I just don't think she can do anything in this situation. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 15:19, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

If you can, try to contact someone who is completely fluent in English to translate for you. I'm not certain if ANet has anyone on staff, but given your frustration and the numerous delays, I'm tempted to assume they don't. Often, when it comes to potential botting, there are a lot of technical details involved which can be extremely difficult to work out when you're relying on machine translation. If ANet does have someone on staff who speaks Chinese, it could simply be taking them a while to sort things out. Patience is going to be key with any disputed ban, particularly when it comes to what looks like botting. ··· Danny Pew Pew 17:39, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

You have asked why accounts are closed. We do not close accounts because of where someone lives; we do not close accounts because of who someone is; we close accounts because of what someone does.
I have seen many, many protests about closed accounts, and I have personally researched hundreds of terminations over the years. The Support Team does a very careful job in investigating account matters of this kind and they block accounts when they are involved in disallowed activities. RMTs have dozens of their employees weekly appeal "unfair bans" saying things like "I did not sell gold" when the team can see the exact gold sale. "I do not bot," when the team can see the bot activity. "Gaile Gray told me to demand all your proofs or you must give me back my account," when we cannot and will not give RMTs that information! Support tells me that for every person who actually discusses an account termination with me, hundreds of others use my name to try to force Support to reinstate an RMT account.
All of us -- ArenaNet and NCsoft -- want legitimate players to continue to enjoy Guild Wars. And that is why I say "Please contact Support and they will review your account termination." If you are not botting and if you are not involved in RMT, they will reinstate the account. But most of the time -- nearly all the time -- the account termination remains in place because it was the proper action. You can read our policy on Real-Money Traders and an explanation of that policy here.
xpycy, if you are not involved in RMT or botting activites you should talk to the Support Team and they will review the matter. Please give me your incident number and I will review this issue. I will not push through an appeal but I do offer to you that I will review the issue and I will post the outcome -- whatever that may be -- on this page. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 21:55, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
# 090731-001836 , Reference # 081117-000283....... --Weillz 18:23, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
One is recent and seems to involve an RMT delivery. The second is from 2008, when the account was closed for botting. I have asked for more details on these two issues. Please keep in mind I cannot accept or review appeals on most account closures. I will examine these two tickets in detail, with the help of the Support team. But if I am flooded with more appeals -- and at least 90% of the appeals that people ask me to review are proved to involve Real-Money Traders -- then I may simply need to refuse to review any appeals in the future.
In the English-language version of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, the Old Knight says "You must choose wisely." (I hope that this is translated as the same into Chinese because it's a very cool line.) I do not mean to make a joke of serious appeals, but I feel that this phrase is very good advice about the use of my name in tickets and about the use of my Wiki page for appeals. Please, choose wisely. :) -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 20:29, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

I have to admit you are a very nice lady, it is compared with the gw's support gm, for your goodwill, I express our sincere gratitude. But I lost the trust , and don't believe those gm again, it is because I have sent numerous complaint letters, and finally, if my account is really having problem, why do not gm tell me: "what time What is the location, I used the botting?" , but GM only reply fixed content(using "copy/paste" ,maybe)。 at last , they not reply to me 。
I think GM maybe reply our customers: please wait several (xxx days) days or during a specified period of time., it maybe better than reply fixed content or make somebody Annoyed or unrelated to the content, especially again and again 。
gm's service is very very bad ( in my eyes ),if these still exists gw2's sevice in china , only one word: die。(but I think gw2 maybe no able to come here)
sometimes ,my English is very poor, do not know how to express。 but except "gm service" , I feel :you are a warm-hearted person ,I don't want you to be put in a very awkward position ,ony when you help me。I only need : "thank you very much, my foreign friend", same time, I thank 'Wyn' very much。'Wyn' give me some help about wiki question。 --- User Xpycy sig Ico.GIF Xpycy 07:14, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
--Weillz 02:44, 13 August 2009 (UTC)

Pimp

moved from User Talk:Gaile Gray

This word needs to be filtered from Guild Wars because apparently its bannable for having the name "Dont Call Me A Pimp" created on my account 23 months ago. I was just informed that the name was breaking the rules. I don't see how an English word ALLOWED by the filter and the character creator is an offense, mainly because of the recent change in the words status. The word used to stand for a man offering sexual services, however now it's referred to people with a high status whether it be money, cars, and just any kind of wealth, they may be considered a pimp. It's not like I made the name "Fu K U" or anything like that, I used a normal English word. Why am I bringing it up? Mainly because support deemed it necessary after three years to perma-ban me for having that name on one of my characters 23 months ago. He was most likely made to do a quick random arena match, usually deleted within 20minutes or so. But wonderful NCsoft high class support on top of their game decided to look that far back and ban me for it. Screw the scammers, cheaters, dupers, and racism/hate speech going on in every other place in the game. Having a word in your name tops the cake guys.--'ÑöĭƑýtalk 18:57, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Word "pimp" when used to describe a person is most definitely one that refers to his occupation, same meaning word had for some 400 years now. This is not the case of "Pimp my ride" kind of usage where word pimp is a verb. Thus you used a derogatory term in your name, should really seen that one coming. Biz 19:34, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
Pimp : "to decorate" or "to gussy." You're using the term from the 1970's and such--'ÑöĭƑýtalk 19:54, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

First, you were not permanently banned for this name, or at least not unless it was one of a very high number of suspensions that put you over the "Frequent Violations" marker. I just don't think that's the case here. What happened was this: When a character is observed or reported, that name is reviewed for a names violation. If upheld, the account holder is required to rename the character in order to play that character again. Someone in breach of the Naming Policy will also have a short suspension. As I've said -- many hundreds of times, I'm sure :) -- the longevity of the name doesn't mean it's ok. Having a name for 6 weeks, 6 months, or 6 years doesn't put a "seal of approval" on it. If it's observed or reported, an offensive name can and will be actioned at any time.
I have spoken with Live Team members, and they will review the use of the word "Pimp" as part of a name. We have a firmer standard for names as compared to words because there isn't a specific filter for names, where there is a three-level filter for words. Therefore, it can be the case that a word that is acceptable in chat is less acceptable as a name. I will let you know the outcome of that discussion, but due to absences of team members, that internal conversation will not take place until next week. You are welcome to simply wait on the name change and play your other characters once your suspension expires. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 20:08, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
Permabans dont expire... xD, but this isn't a name I had though, that's the thing. I had this name two years ago for maybe 20 minutes then deleted it. The only name I've ever had that could be offensive beside that is "I Buy Hacks Online" but after talking to two anet employees who said it was ok, one who thought it was funny, I was sure I wouldn't be banned for that. I was just surprised that after two years a name that's not disrespectful or revolting in anyway can be used against someone as a previous infraction. My permaban has to do with this and several inappropriate language bans that I've had, which I also think is ridiculous. I was reading the ToS a couple days ago and it says that marks on your account expire, so I don't see how they can use a name thats allowed and not offensive against me in a case. Bottom line is, I cant stand NCsoft support.--'ÑöĭƑýtalk 20:15, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
If the filter on names is less strict than what is enforced, the filter should be updated, imo. -- Armond WarbladeUser Armond sig image.png{{Bacon}} 20:17, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Noxify -- Let us review to make sure I understand: You were blocked for a name violation. Often, a player is mistaken about which character name was marked. (It happens. Someone says "I was blocked for Mary the Mouse," and in fact he was blocked for another character altogether.)

Terminations do not expire, but as I clearly said, a name block does not result in a termination unless it is tied to multiple violations that tip the scales into the territory of a Frequent Violations termination. Now that I have your additional information, I think I see that this is what happened in your case. Please know that it really doesn't matter if it's a name issue, a chat violation, or the use of a game exploit -- at some point the Frequent Offender rule kicks in, and that's as it should be. Have you appealed? If so, please give me the incident/ticket number so that I may review this. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 22:03, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

I was banned because they think i was buying a Guild Wars account with in-game gold.. with which I wasnt! Those children over at NCsoft can't read a chat log and think that if someone posts a e-mail their giving their account away. Thanks for the help Gaile.--'ÑöĭƑýtalk 22:48, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
What I was buying was a windows LIVE account for Xbox, after reading the ToS thouroghly it turns out that I actually HAVEN't broken a rule, I agree that this was probably looked over though and can be added to the ToS. It currently says you cant buy the following with in-game gold: GW accounts, Real world $, real world Software. Now because it wasn't in the ToS, it shouldn't be punishable, am I right? I however respect that you may want to susspend someone over it, perhaps a 3 day or 2 week ban for reaching around the ToS. It's already been two weeks though and the person that scammed me and 7 other people as well as harassing us is now unbanned (he only got 2 weeks). Luckily though, I contacted him on Xbox with my account and he assured me that he was giving the money back to everyone that was scammed because his brother was using the account and he was very afraid he would get permabanned. In total I've probably written 15 paragraphs or so to NCsoft but now their officially ignoring me, so you're truly my only hope. Thanks again.;--'ÑöĭƑýtalk 22:55, 7 August 2009 (UTC)
I think it's bogus that they can ignore you, anyway. This guys on obs with the name admin... I say im a mod, and get a permaban for that? What if I said i was the president? Could i get banned for not being the president? lol... NCsoft DOESNT care about it's customers. I have nothing against ANET btw, my hatred is simply to the retarded support system that GW uses.--'ÑöĭƑýtalk 00:57, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
Does the guy in the top 16 talk to scammers and say I'M AN ADMIN, GIVE ME BACK MY MONEY OR I'LL BAN YOU? (I'm guessing no.) DarkNecrid 12:24, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

(Reset indent) I have thoroughly read the ticket and all the associated game logs. Noxify, this termination has been a long time coming. You've acquired a record of violations for all sorts of nasty things, and well you know it. In this latest instance, you tried to buy something using Guild Wars gold as a form of currency and then claimed "I'm a moderator," and told a player "You're banned." The person you were talking to naturally assumed you are a GW official, which is precisely what you intended. You say the thief is running scared and returning his ill-gotten goods? Why? Because "he was very afraid he would get permabanned." Would someone really run scared from a forum ban when he's in the game, is told he's banned, and the forum isn't mentioned even once in the entire log? I'll answer that: No.

And while I can certainly understand the frustration of being scammed, a player is not justified to use "any and all means" at his disposal to get back scammed items. He is not justified to play at being a victim to try to entrap scammers, either, which I guess you stated you were doing at some point. (It's clear from the record and from your own later statements that that wasn't your plan at all.)

Impersonation is a very serious issue; it often/usually results in account termination. Add more than half a dozen additional offenses and it's clear why the team felt it was time to terminate the game account. In addition, there's the fact you've sent many, many tickets -- at least 17 in the last 6 months! -- and that many of them seem more along the lines of harassing Support than of reporting or dealing with real issues. I believe most people will understand why the team -- after giving you several respectful and detailed responses, as I have done myself many times -- this time chose to tell you that they would not enter into further discussion, particularly at a point where the case for termination was so clear.

If you know of a name that should be blocked, you should have reported it long ago. You've failed to do so even now. Now, keep in mind that pointing at another player for a rules breach doesn't give you a freebie on your own breach, especially when the scale of the two offenses is significantly different.

I believe that you like Guild Wars, but I also can see that you haven't been a positive influence on the game. I regret that, because I think you could have been a contributing member of the community. You've had warnings in the form of previous violations and previous suspensions. When someone continues to misbehave, when someone acquires a large number of violations, those poor choices will catch up with that person.

Now, I've tried to answer as fully and clearly as I can. I have the facts in front of me -- all the facts, not selective details. I know you will not be happy with my answer, but I hope you will acknowledge that I've given my time (even on a weekend) to try to see the truth of this situation. I am sorry that the facts do not sustain your claims. The termination was not a personal attack on you, it was part of a continuing system of game management that works for the good of the community as a whole. At this point, I do not believe it would be productive to get into a discussion or argument about this. So since you now have received the fair and personal review that you sought, I ask that you accept the decision of the team and drop the matter. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 19:57, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

One more note: I have drafted a revision to the Conduct Breaches and Outcomes document to explain the "Repeated Violations" situation. I have forwarded that to our Legal Counsel to review, and other folks will be taking a look at it, too. Once approved, we will localize the revisions and add them to the website in all languages. The revisions I've proposed are intended to explain something that, frankly, I would have thought was obvious: that while blocks do expire with time, the aggregate record is retained and that with enough violations, an account may be terminated on the basis of that record.
In the interests of better and clearer disclosure, we will be making those revisions as soon as it is reasonable and possible to do so. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 19:59, 8 August 2009 (UTC)
I obviously didn't scare him because he didn't give me my money back. And It's cool, I'm not a good contributor to the community. Besides giving blade radio much of my money and a crystalline to giveaway, as well as helping newer players with missions, I've done nothing. Also... I find it great that a player that posted all my personal information and my phonenumber and spammed it in kamadan telling people to call me and tell me to kill myself is unbanned... yet me reporting a scammer gives me a permaban. I am forever done with NCsoft and it's products, because they obviously don't care about their customers or breaking the law. <3 Nox.
Let's make it clear: You were not banned for reporting a scammer; you were banned for repeated violations, the most recent of which was impersonating an NCsoft or ArenaNet employee. I am sorry that you were banned, but I cannot see that an error was made in the termination. You said, "Luckily though, I contacted him on Xbox with my account and he assured me that he was giving the money back to everyone that was scammed because his brother was using the account and he was very afraid he would get permabanned." I guess I misunderstood that to mean you received your payment back.
Please give me the incident number of the report you made about the person who posted your personal information in the game. And to help me understand the situation, also let me know how he obtained all those personal details. Once I can review the incident, I will discuss the matter internally, perhaps in a policy review setting, for my early thoughts are that there could be cases where such an breach deserves an account termination rather than an account suspension.
Having said that, though, I need to emphasize that these are separate issues; one does not impact the other. The fact that someone mistreated you is not a justification to mistreat others; being a victim of someone's abuse does not give you a "get out of jail free" card when you breach the UA or the RoC. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 02:17, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
I don't see how you can nail me for claiming to be an moderator when i never said exactly "I'm a guild wars moderator" or "I work for anet". When I reported someone for buying an account, and got a screenie of them saying "Yea, just bought this one cause my last was banned, it's r8 so thats good" I was told "He might be kidding, we can't assume anything here" So how can you assume that I meant GW admin? Plus, he got unbanned... I'm not getting unbanned. He, scammed, sold bad stuff, harassed... I tried to get my money back by using my status on another website. Also, I have no idea how the other guy found out all of my information as I've never posted it in game. The only thing I can think of is on a ventrilo server, beacause admins can look at ips and such. As far as contributing to the community u can ask tesla herself, we're good friends because i give much to blade and the community. The other issue I don't even care about because that doesnt concern me because ncsoft wont do anything about it.--'ÑöĭƑýtalk 06:04, 9 August 2009 (UTC)
lol. just lol. keep up the good work, ANet. -Auron 01:51, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

@Gaile: I simply meant that I thought that the filter used to screen names on the character creation screens should be updated because I thought it was used as a line of defense against unacceptable names. In an ideal world, I guess, the support team of theoretical MMO company X would take a list of the names they review and find to be unacceptable and whenever someone had some time on their hands those names, along with some variations thereof, would be coded into the blacklist. I guess I meant that I thought the word "pimp" should be blacklisted with regards to player names because it's obviously been reviewed and found unacceptable and yet the filter doesn't block it, which could be confusing. (I doubt Nox is the only person ever to try to put "pimp" in a character name, either.)

@Nox: I've been trying to not be terrible to you and Gaile (to whom I will owe apologies to soon), but seriously, cut the crap and stop being a fucking retard. You know I don't like you, but I don't think that's interfering with my judgment there. There's a thing called rules lawyering; it's full of bullshit and you're abusing it more than a 3.5 epic caster summoning and dominating an army of greater angels (each with more HD than him) so he can blow up/transmute/create the earth just to prove he can.

Offensive names, redux

Hi, I've been debating bringing this to you, since receiving the support response. But, here's the ticket: 090805-001393. Offensive player name, you'll see what it is in the ticket. I thought consensus had been reached, based on some of the archived topics, but I guess not. You'll also notice in the ticket that the support agent that responded gave me the email address of the user in question. I'm not sure what type of things you can do to prevent things like that in the future, but I, for one, would appreciate it if my email address were not given out to those that might deem it necessary to report me for some infraction. Any response/clarification of the situation you could provide would be much appreciated. --Freedom Bound 23:02, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

I am not sure that the email address that appeared (by accident) in the ticket was the user name of the player whom you were reporting, but you're right, it should not have appeared, no matter who it was. I will follow up on that.
As for the name, I felt as you did about names of the sort you reference, based on previous discussions with the team. I have been seeking the archived content just now, but I can't find it. :( Anyway, I will keep looking for that and will get a clarification from the Live Team in order to ensure we have a consistent policy of enforcing the Naming Policy.
Thanks for making me aware of these two issues. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 07:23, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
One example is here. And, just for your information, it was that player's email address, a quick Google search revealed that address linked with that character name on a different, non-GW related web site. Thank you for following up. --Freedom Bound 12:38, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
@Gaile: I very much appreciate your quick reply to this, as privacy issues are of great concern to me. (I note that the privacy policy on the official site provides details about how personal information may be used, but very little detail on how it is protected from accidental or purposeful breaches. While it is true that this follows the trend of nearly all firms (internet or otherwise), I am always hopeful that some company will break new ground in privacy protection.)   — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 16:57, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi. I think you'll want to drop support a note to see how they can help resolve the Error 058 issue you're experiencing. The Technical Support team can give you some pointers on how to work around what is most likely (for this error code) an internal routing issue. Support Problem

Hi Gaile i have a question about support every time i try to log in on the web support side my account and or password is invalid. It's funny every time i need to use the retrieve password option. And every time i get the password i use. I know my account input is right i have written it down and put it in a save for save keeping. Why is the site giving me such a hard time. Cult Mephisto 12:53, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Make sure you have capslock turned off. =p Really, though, it's probably just a missed keystroke or swapping two consecutive characters. I do both plenty on a daily basis, myself. The only reason it could be the site's fault is either a bad post command at the initial login page (which would theoretically take you to a re-attempt page with a correct post command), or extremely high volume traffic, which could cause login to become throttled. ··· Danny Pew Pew 16:56, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

In-Game Store: Purchased Upgrade Weirdness

Hi Gaile! I didn't see anything about this anywhere, and I was wondering what I should do. I purchased two extra storage panes today through the in-game store, but I can't actually use them, since they are there, but their tabs are grayed-out and cannot be clicked. I restarted my computer after making the purchase, since the support article online suggests to close and open the game again, but I still can't use my two new storage panes after that. I have actually closed the game and restarted my computer and logged in and out of GW several times, but it doesn't help.

If I look at the access keys for my account, the two storage pane upgrades are listed there. I checked my e-mail and there is an e-mail from NCSoft that says that my transaction is complete and it displays my two codes for my two new storage panes in the e-mail.

I checked my credit card account and it shows $19.98 from NCSoft charged to my card. I saw that I could check my PlayNC purchase history, and it does not show today's purchase of two storage panes in my purchase history. It doesn't seem like a problem with my credit card or my available funds, since I have over 50% of my card's limit available, and other purchases worked on the same credit card today. I do not know why the transaction is registered everywhere except for my PlayNC account transaction history.

Is this normal? Does it sometimes take a long time (i.e. more than a couple hours) before I can use something that I bought from the in-game store, or should I contact Guild Wars Support, or should I contact PlayNC support? I bought some stuff a couple months ago from the in-game store (using the same credit card as today) and I could use it right away, so I'm really lost as to what to do this time :( --The preceding unsigned comment was added by User:70.131.116.105 (talk).

I've always been able to use my new in-game store purchases right away. Your best bet is to contact support, tell them everything you said here, and also provide your account/character name (not the password), so that they can look you up and see the problem directly. Do not post that information here, as this is public. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 03:14, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

(Reset indent) Hello to the OP. This may be an example of a known issue that creeps up every once in a while and which I had been informed was resolved about two weeks ago. Or, this situation could be peculiar to your account or your credit card. But in any case, your instincts are correct, there generally is no "waiting period" for completed transactions (which you confirmed with your credit card). So when this appears it does require involvement of the Support Team. What I'd like you to do is to submit a support ticket. (Click that link and you'll get to the page that allows you to choose the best option for you to reach the team.) Alternately, you may call our Account Support Team between 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM Central Time (US) at 1-512-225-6359. Please describe the issue as you have done here and of course be prepared to provide the account user name, NCsoft Master Account user name, credit card number, and date of transaction.

After you have contacted Support, you will receive a 12-digit Support Incident Number through email. Once you have a support ticket (either created by you or by a team member), you may be asked to attach your confirmation email to that ticket for the team's review. At some point, please feel free to post the incident number here (it is not confidential) and I'll look into the issue on my end, as well. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 05:02, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi Gaile! Thank you so much for your help :D
I had still hoped that there might have just been a delay with my purchase due to bank or server slowness last night, and that my storage tabs would work by the time I got home today, but the tabs are still disabled. My purchase from yesterday does show up on my PlayNC account transaction history now and says "Paid" for the status, but it's been 24 hours since I bought the stuff and it does look like those storage tabs aren't going to cooperate with me. I'm glad you could help me find out that I do need a Support ticket to be opened, and if you wanted to look at the ticket, my ticket number is 090826-000071. Just don't check on my ticket unless you are bored, I already feel bad that I had to ask you for help and I would feel additionally bad if I you spent more time on my problem when you have other important stuff to do. I can wait in the support line for my storage tabs :) 76.224.15.132 00:35, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
Nevermind, it works now. Actually, it was working all along, I just didn't notice that it had added 2 active tabs and 2 disabled tabs to my storage. I only saw the disabled tabs and found that I couldn't click them, and then assumed that the two disabled tabs were the ones that I had bought. I didn't even see the two new tabs that did work! I clicked the birthday tab a few minutes ago, freaked out that it was empty, and clicked around on every single storage tab, wondering where my stuff was. Then I noticed that I had 5 tabs of stuff and 2 tabs of nothing, and 2 more tabs that were disabled. I felt really, really, really dumb o_o. Sorry for wasting everybody's time, but hopefully I have made a useful example of something to have people check (click all your tabs and look for empty tabs) the next time there is a panicked person who can't click their new storage. 76.224.15.132 02:33, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
Oh excellent! I really appreciate that you let me know this, because I was going to see about scheduling some time with the Account Support Lead tomorrow to check into the situation. I think your point is a good one: Click all tabs, just to make sure. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 03:09, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

Blocked for Offensive Name

Apparently I got banned for having a inappropriate name.(well I think you'd refer to it asa block since its 3 days). Will I know what name I was banned for after being unblocked ? or Could you fetch it up for me ? My IGN is I divinity Reigns I.If its Yeen on Bltchrole I have no Idea how that is offensive since its a pvp term for a easy to play role :/ .Anyway please let me know I'm not asking for a unblock but just for some more information.Thx for your time Lilondra User Lilondra Sig.jpg*poke* 07:07, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Lilondra. The way that name blocks work at the present time, the in-game message lets you know that you have been blocked for XX hours, and that you will be able to rename the offending character when you get back into the name. In fact, you must rename any characters that are flagged for a breach of the Naming Policy before you can play those characters. (You can play any others immediately after the suspension expires.) But you're right, the message does not point out the specific name of the flagged character, and that can cause confusion. I asked if we could work in functionality that says "You have been blocked for the name XYZ, but I don't know if adding that will be possible. (Everyone agreed it was a good idea, though. Certainly it's something we can consider for Guild Wars 2.)
In the meantime, I can speculate that a name with "bitch" in it did draw the name block, even if "creative spelling" was used to avoid the name/word filter. Remember, names are scrutinized a bit more carefully than words because there is no name filter, meaning that everyone must see the name, including those who may be offended by that word. Despite the popularity of the term in PvP, the word isn't considered appropriate in a name. But you will know for certain which name was blocked in a couple of days. I hope that's helpful info. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 18:48, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
Sry I just assumed intention and context were far more important when it comes to being offensive then just the word itself.Obviously I will no longer use Bitchrole in my character names.Thx for your time and for the info Lilondra User Lilondra Sig.jpg*poke* 11:32, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
I understand what you're saying there. But really, it would be impossible for people to know intention with certainty, either players or to the Support Team. Context can be hard to establish; I'm pretty sure that a number of experienced Guild Wars players wouldn't know the context of the use of the word. (Or might know it but not like its use, anyway.) In the end, the question isn't why it was used, or how it was used, but the fact that it was used at all. The word generally is felt to be at least moderately offensive. (Test: Can you say it in the classroom? Would you say it to your boss?) Remember that other players cannot elect to block that word, which makes it a little more immediate.
I'm real sorry, Lilondra. I don't mean to sound as if I'm coming down on you like a ton of bricks. I'm really not judging you, or saying "Naughty, naughty!" here. :) I'm just trying to show the more global view of the word, and I hope that my comments will help explain the actions taken. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 19:21, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

LOL, I could never quite grasp Siobhan. I can remember the first time I saw that name written down, I was in a bar in Galway and I turned to a friend and said "OMG look at this weird name, Sigh-obe-han!", at which point she fell off her chair laughing at me. Ciarán however sounds somewhat like Kieran, however the fada, which is the accent over the second A, soften and lengthens the A sound into an AW sound. Thus its said "Kier-awn". It was however somewhat unfair to you, as i forgot to mention that in spite of my female user name, I myself am male, but that was completely my fault and not something I am ever offended over. (never have understood why some people find it offensive for people to confuse your gender online). So yeh, most peeps these days either just call me Sal (which confuses people when my gaming friends and none-gaming friends meet) or Kieran. :) Personally I've always liked the name "Gaile Gray", thought it made you sound a bit like an "X Man". :)-- Salome User salome sig2.png 23:19, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
My poor Dervish, Nedaa, has issues too though now her name is better known thanks to that girl in Iran who has been made into a martyr (really sad, nothing like hearing the news and turning around after hearing your character's name). Though the problem will be, much like when I named my guild Highland Tsunami, that people will ask if she is named after the Iranian girl. People accused my Guild of being named after the Tsunami that hit in 2004. >.> Not fun. Katherinezoltin 06:37, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Sorry, Gaile, did you say it was hard to figure out the context of the word "bitchrole" when used as a name for a PvP character? Just want to clarify. -- Armond WarbladeUser Armond sig image.png{{Bacon}} 06:43, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

No. I think what I said was clear but I will be happy to rephrase it: Some players will not understand the use of the word "bitch" in that context. I agree with Lilondra that it has a bit of "insiders humor" about it. By definition, that means some players aren't going to know what it means or why it's used. More importantly, a number of players are not comfortable with the use of that word in an always-visible character (or guild) name. Most relevantly, the company disallows its use. It's really pretty simple, isn't it? -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 19:29, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
Thank you - I was a bit confused. You were talking about context from the point of view of other players; I thought you were talking about context from the point of view of the developers (who, I am sure, are perfectly capable of detecting whether a character is RP or PvP). -- Armond WarbladeUser Armond sig image.png{{Bacon}} 19:43, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
That makes no sense at all. How would verbal context and name appropriateness be at all connected with a developer's ability to see a character's core PvP/PvE designation? -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 20:24, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
Well, I had thought you had said it was difficult for the developers to see the context of the name. Obviously I was confused, as - I would assume - anyone on the ANet team would know what a "bitchrole" is. -- Armond WarbladeUser Armond sig image.png{{Bacon}} 22:26, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
They know what a bitchrole is, but just because it's a PvP term doesn't mean it's ok to have it out there unable to be filtered, quite a few people don't like cuss words (even people who PvP!) and don't want to see the word bitch every 2 seconds. There's clearly a rule against vulgarity in your name, but I don't see a "context suddenly makes vulgar words ok!" clause. I get what you're lawyering but it's pretty obvious what Gaile is getting at. DarkNecrid 22:31, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
Do inform me as to what exactly I'm attempting to lawyer. I was simply trying to clarify whether or not ANet knew what a bitchrole was. I wasn't contesting the block at all - I have no opinion on that matter, except that I feel it's within Support's right to block for it if they decide it's appropriate to do so. -- Armond WarbladeUser Armond sig image.png{{Bacon}} 00:31, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

I meant I misread his intent :P. To me it seemed like he was lawyering the rule to try to affect the outcome of the judgment from the way I read his messages, but I probably only read it this way because it's very common for that type of thing to occur. He was just making sure Anet knew what bitchrole was apparently, which is pretty silly I guess since it'd be hard not to. :P DarkNecrid 02:18, 30 August 2009 (UTC)

Xunlai Predictions for June

As we iron out the difficulty with the distribution of the May points (which arose last night) we will be holding off on opening the Tournament House for June predictions. We'll open predictions as soon as we are able to do so. Thanks for your patience. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 19:50, 19 June 2009 (UTC)

Just an update. Due to issues with the backend of the Xunlai Tournament House, we will not be opening it for predictions for the June ATS. You can read about this decision here. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 02:16, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
Hmm and i always thinking that one of the development stages in a system development project is testing the functionality with use and misuse cases...and always have a back up ready when problems arise. Is the software development cycle in control? A roll back procedure is a life saver, so development ocurs in a seperated development, acceptance , test infrastructure...rapid application development methodology should not always been taken literarly. I am wondering what exactly the problem is on the backend. Open up and enlight us with some insight...follow the light (hmmm watched angels and demons) Good Luck to the team with solving the problem. :) Didis 18:24, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Multiple accounts

i know this question has been asked so many different ways but i was wondering if i could pls get a little info. if i own more than 1 account and use gwx2 to 600/smite, playing both accounts on one machine, will it be a violation? since i'm technically controlling both accounts the only advantage is getting more drops than doing it with a hero. if thats a violation, what if i use 2 seperate computers. i'm sorry to repeat a question, but i dont wanna try anything i'm unsure of without checking first. thanks --adrin User adrin ecto sig.png 08:38, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Well.. I'm not Gaile.. obviously.. xD but Gaile has mentioned that she uses two accounts to mule items. She also stated above [to someones that explained how to run GW twice on a computer] that it was allowed to run multiple accounts on one PC. So in my eyes it would be allowed. But I guess wait for an official response. Magic User Magic Signature Ico.jpg Talk 13:17, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
Here's what Gaile has said (above):
  • re: GWx2: "regarding using two separate machines for muling between separate accounts is definite allowed. I do it personally and I asked years ago about its permissability, so there's no question in my mind it's ok."
  • re: GWx2: "Here is the general answer: We do not support the use of third-party programs for Guild Wars. This includes programs that allow a player to simultaneously play multiple Guild Wars accounts on a single computer. However, we do not take action against those who do so as long as they do not engage in cheats, exploits, or other breaches of the User Agreement or Rules of Conduct. Keep in mind that the use of third-party programs is strongly discouraged and we cannot offer support if you develop problems as a result of their use. " (emphasis mine)
  • re: keyboard shortcuts/macros: "PvE Gamplay: As long as you are at your computer and are actively playing the game, we’re ok with what you’re doing. As soon as the game plays itself – as soon as you can walk away and the computer continues to play – you’re in breach of the Rules of Conduct and you are subject to account sanctions, which can involve an account suspension or an account termination." (emphasis mine)
Adding in the fact that people have been using GWx2 for years (without an adverse ANet reaction), I think there's enough information there to draw reasonable conclusions about the safety of running multiple accounts on the same PC. Gaile has also said (at various times) that she has asked for official reflection on a variety of specific uses for multiple accounts (e.g. double-solo farming). She has promised to post again as soon as she receives her internal answer. Tennessee Ernie Ford 23:23, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
and thats fine, i just want to be able to get a specific answer from her. people have been unjustly banned for botting, and if i use gwx2 to double farm, i dont wanna have to go through the process again. i'm sure cykor is tired of hearing from me as it is =P --adrin User adrin ecto sig.png 01:24, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
Adrin, the comments above constitute a pretty clear answer. I really don't know what else could be said about the subject. Few -- very few -- innocent players are blocked for botting, and those issues are addressed promptly with no penalty, naturally. I have asked the Live Team for comments about the use of third-party programs such as the one you cite. They may give me more details, which I will provide you. But at this point, all I can say is contained in the quotes that Tennessee Ernie Ford provided. (Thanks, TEF!) -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 21:00, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
thanks for the reply, the maint thing i was conderned about is exploit. 600/smite is somewhat of an exploit so i wasnt sure exactly about using a third party program to use it. Thanks again --adrin User adrin ecto sig.png 21:27, 22 June 2009 (UTC)
I'm still wondering about dual farming, too. All those quotes are nice, but it all hangs on the question of whether dual-account farming is an exploit or not, and that was not answered. It's definitely not the same as muling between accounts, which is the only thing that was mentioned as being "definitely ok" in those quotes. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 18:03, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
I don't see it as an exploit at all. So you're running the game twice. You've paid for 2 copies of a game. You're not using 3rd party programs and nothing is effecting the state of the game so your aren't violating the TOS. Therefore, it's fine if you do it. [Rofl.. Please let me know what the team says and thanks again. Rose made a great point that it isn't just muling, and more specific answer would be helpful. I've never heard of anyone being banned for using GWx2, or any other (legitimate) method of running 2 clients at once, unless they're just BSing and using it as a cover operation for a half-dozen bots. Hm. This reminds me of that time I pulled back a sheet and found my bed was crawling with leeches, or maggots, or something else... or maybe it was a movie. Hard to tell sometimes. Anyway, it would be very odd if the official response was that it's not permitted, considering how long it's been going on. Personal Information Privacy

Question

I wanted to ask something about NCsoft Support.

I have several support tickets containing alot of information about my account, if someone would be able to enter my NCsoft Support Account then they can steal my GW account. My question is, why is such information not removed from the ticket once the issue has been resolved?

They also could find out my e-mail address(es), real name, home adress, date of birth and more... i'm not comfortable with that and we do not have the option to remove that info from the tickets. We are also unable to remove attachments, and those can also contain personal info.

This is the only website I know that I am not able to remove personal information. Or is there a reason we are not able to do that? talk Qaletaqa Hania 13:13, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

Probably because they never bothered to develop such functionality. The ToS and/or Privacy Policy should've easily covered most or all of your concerns. If I'm bored later, I'll poke around to see if there is some way to remove that information, but as long as you didn't use an obvious password and you're not busy sharing it, you shouldn't have anything to worry about. ··· Danny Pew Pew 16:59, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Any sysop on this website can find out all of that information by looking at the IP you're posting from. If you're worried about that kind of stuff, I strongly suggest you not use the internet. Sell your home, buy a fallout bunker, an HK-416, lots of ammo, a microwave, and a lot of canned food. Stay there until you get tired of waiting, then realize no one is out to get you and venture out into the world. It also helps if you have a good password. I suggest you use the RIPEMD-128 checksum to generate a password based on a variant of your last name, which is what I do. --Jette User Jette awesome.png 19:59, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
@Danny: Yeah, I also thought they never bothered to develop and/or implement such functionality, but I think they should. Why? I don't wanna explain it here. And i'm not worried that someone might get my password or steal my account, I just wanna be able to remove that info whenever I want.
@Jette: I'm not worried that anyone might get my password. And no they can't find all that information by looking at my IP, we have the luxury of privacy and my ISP can't give out that info, they cannot give you my name, adress, date of birth, etc... Try it and if you are successful, provide me proof and i'll take actions against my ISP for giving you that info. Also, i'm not worried someone might be "out to get me".
Anyway, like always, i'll wait for a official response from an Anet and/or NCsoft employee. They tend to think a little further then just, "Ow, He might be asking this because he is sharing or using an easy to guess password". My password is not the problem, I wanna be able to remove personal info whenever I want, not that I want to, but it's always good to have that option, for both the company and the user. So anyone that has something to say about passwords, please don't. --talk Qaletaqa Hania 02:23, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
I can inquire about this, but I need to understand something: Since the information is in a ticket that is on the secure, protected servers, can you explain why certain information would need to be removed later? The information would be as secure as any other, including your user name and your password. Frankly I don't know of any website that allows me to go into past exchanges and alter the content. Once sent, once posted, so it remains. Could you explain a bit more? -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 07:27, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
Couldn't being able to remove attachments and information technically affect Supports ability to go through your previous tickets? Sometimes this would be neccessary if say they wanted to gauge a users ticket history and factor that into a ban (were they harassing, useful, etc), or if they had to pass through a previous ticket with you for a later issue, etc. It'd take a lot more server space if they had to duplicate tickets (one for "you", one for "them" that has the unhidden details that only GM's can see...) and this feature became popular. :( DarkNecrid 09:40, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
@Gaile: It doesn't matter if the information is on secure, protected servers. It still remains personal information, and I think people should be able to remove personal information when they want to. You say that you don't know any website that let's you remove or alter past exchanges? On most websites I can remove personal information, let's take social websites as an example, most of those give you the option to remove personal information whenever you want. Also most forums allow editing of your posts even after a long period of time.
Anyway i'll do some reading and maybe explain a bit more. It's all about the personal information nothing else really.
@DarkNecrid: They can still do all that without the personal information, and they don't have to duplicate anything. -- talk Qaletaqa Hania 16:25, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
This is the only website where you can't remove personal information? Aside from that being wrong (you can go to your preferences and edit your email and real name at any time), you've just shown us that you've never heard of Wikipedia, 4chan, digg, or any other site that involves comments without an edit feature.
Regardless, you shouldn't worry about it. Besides the fact that a *lot* of information can be found out about you just from your IP address (and, guess what, the TCP/IP system wasn't exactly designed for security - any time you visit a website, it stores your IP address), it's just as hard (read: likely) to find out your personal information as your GW information, as it's behind the same security. Basically, if someone can get into your NCSoft support account, you've got bigger problems, as that means someone got past all of NCSoft's security (an impressive feat, to say the least).
It's odd to me, but many people seem to be surprised by the fact that the internet is inherently insecure. (Maybe that's why McAfee is making their sales with Anonymous-inspired ads.) There's no way to guarantee that anything put up on the internet won't be seen by the people you don't want to see - a dedicated hacker with enough time on his hands and/or enough friends can find and manipulate any information anywhere. (Of course, a dedicated cat burglar will get into your house no matter what you do either, but people never seem to think of that either.) What you can do is protect your stuff enough to ward off the bored hackers who will give up after two or three minutes of brute force and make your internet footprint small enough to not tempt the dedicated ones (just as you would do with anything in real life).
Remember: A chance that something will happen doesn't mean it has ever, or will ever, happen.
-- Armond WarbladeUser Armond sig image.png{{Bacon}} 17:50, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

(Reset indent) @Armond: I'm not talking about "this" website as in this wiki, but as in NCsoft Support website, to be more precise, the tickets. And don't assume i'm stupid, I know that everytime you visit a website your IP is logged, but there are ways so that it's not your IP that is beeing logged, but then again you can still find a trace that leads back to you.

Another thing, if you are on a shared network then it's easier if the victim is also on that network to get his/her passwords and/or username, ever heard of packet sniffing? Anyway they probably thought of that and made it hard to crack, something I should try figuring out, don't ya think? Anyway this is one of the reasons that I monitor my network to see if anyone has gained access to my network. And if I would be able to crack it they could get into serious trouble according to the Directive 95/46/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 24 October 1995, because it's their job to keep "personal data" secure once it has been given to them.

Like I said to someone else, if you can find out my name, adress, etc... by looking up my IP, proof me and i'll take actions against my ISP for giving you that information. As long as I don't abuse anything, hack, or do any other illegal activities they cannot give out that info, and if i'm correct then they still won't give it to you or anyone else, they'll notify the authorities about those illegal activities and the authorities will contact me.

Also once again i'm not concerned about the security of that website, I just want people to be able to remove personal information when they want to, is that wrong? Also it would ensure the safety of personal information because it wouldn't be there anymore, wich would be good for both the user and the company, NCsoft in this case. -- talk Qaletaqa Hania 19:17, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

@Armond: Because of the comment you made I tested something within my network, wich is legal, but now I am seriously concerned about the security around the NCsoft support website. You say the security around the NCsoft support website is an impressive feat right? You should seriously re-consider that thought, you obviously didn't test it. But don't freak out people, your NCsoft Master Account is very well protected and safe, I tested that to.
I was absolutly not worried about the security of my personal data on the the NCsoft support website, you guys made me worry about it, I tested it and now I know it's harder to find out my password and username for GWGuru and guildwars.incgamers.com then it is for the Support website. It seriously needs a security upgrade because of the amount of personal data beeing exchanged in those tickets. -- talk Qaletaqa Hania 20:55, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
I want to preface this by making it clear I'm going to attempt to answer this on an informative level, but I'm not a lawyer and I would not presume to give legal advice or any interpretations whatsoever of international law. Informally: You may be interested in knowing that you might have as many as three accounts related to a single Guild Wars account: Your Guild Wars game account, a NCsoft Master Account, and a NCsoft Support Account. Accessing a Support Account will not give you access to your Master Account or your game account. It is designed to help you get access to those accounts, but accessing the nuts and bolts (game, master account) requires careful verification.
In order for verification to take place, you may be asked to provide us with some information. Perhaps the issue involves player misbehavior, account ownership, or a technical matter. For ownership, Support may ask your name and address to help verify that you are the true owner of the Guild Wars account. If you're having connectivity issues, Tech Support might ask for your system specs. If you are scammed, the GM team may use a screenshot that you submitted to establish what took place.
It isn't possible to remove information in such a way that we retain nothing whatsoever. If you think about it, we have to obtain and preserve some information in order for you to create and access your game acccount (and possibly a Master Account, as well). You may be asked to verify the information already at hand; it would be unusual for you to be asked to provide new info.
Consider a couple of scenarios: (1) After helping secure your account, the team receives a petition from another person who claims he owns the same account. How does the team identify the owner? How do they weigh the various conflicting proofs of ownership, when they no longer have the evidence that you provided? (2) If someone claims he is innocent of a breach, we want to give a respectful review to his appeal. But if we deleted important information related to the block (upon request), we are unable to do so.
Please remember, information provided to Support is not going to be given to anyone external, but it needs to be reviewed internally. I hope that this answers your questions and gives you reassurance about our security and information practices. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 23:54, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
Gaile, first of all I trust that NCsoft and/or Anet is not gonna give out my personal data to anyone externally so that is not a problem, any employee doeing that without asking me permission to do so should be fired on the spot in my oppinion.
Anyway you have given me the answer to my question, wich was why personal information is not removed from tickets, The answer beeing the first scenario you wrote.
But since some people thought I was worried about the security of the NCsoft Support website, it got me thinking and I became worried, and offcourse tested it.
Now consider this scenario: Let's say someone with bad intentions get's unauthorized access to my network and steals outgoeing and/or incoming traffic, and gets a hold of the username and password to my NCsoft Support Account. Now, if it was ever used to establish that I am the true owner of a account then there will be atleast one adress and a name in a ticket. Then the "someone with bad intentions" could use that info to harass the other person.
It is NCsoft's duty to keep that data as safe as possible after it has been freely given to them as long as they wanna keep that info available for future reference. This is done well with the NCsoft Master account and Game account but not with the NCsoft Support account. My personal oppinion about the security on the NCsoft Support website after I tested it, is that it's not well enough protected to store any personal data. -- talk Qaletaqa Hania 01:57, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
I don't think Anet would ever give you your own personal info back, so any impersonator would not have access to the info support has about you just by having your login. Support can ask you to submit info again to compare it to what they have for verification of identity, but they will never give it back to you or anyone pretending to be you. The hacker would indeed have to hack the NCsoft/support/whatever database to actually get access to all the personal data. Just pretending to be you by having your login info stolen through packet sniffing or whatnot gets them nowhere outside of maybe stealing your GW characters stuff, but your personal data at NCsoft/Anet is still out of reach. Your computer and network are your worst enemy as far as this goes, because the Emails that you send to NCsoft/support may get intercepted when you send them, but once they're there, they're safe. Backup copies on your computer may also be stolen, as it far less secure than the company databases.
Now you claim that the NCsoft support account is not secure enough by your standards, while the other two are "ok." You may want to tell them exactly why you think so, possibly in Email to Gaile if you don't want to post it here. Although, the "personal information" that's stored is usually just name/address and game keys, sometimes phone numbers, and a bunch of ticket cases that no hacker would ever care about how many times you called someone names on GW or reported someone scamming you out of 20k imaginary gold. You can get much more useful (i.e. dangerous) info than that just by dumpster diving or stealing people's mail from their mailboxes. O_o User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 18:57, 13 August 2009 (UTC)
@Rose: Sry, what you said doesn't make alot of sense to me.
Let me explain once more, ok? Let's say someone lost/forgot their password to their NCsoft Master Account, then they'll have to make a ticket in their NCsoft Support Account, Support will then ask for your First and Last Name, Physical Address, Date of birth, Serial codes/access keys, Unique Account ID(s). So your personal data will be stored in a ticket and visible to anyone accessing your NCsoft Support Account. Now, they'll need your username and password for your NCsoft Support Account, wich can be obtained in various ways, to access your Support account. I know they are able to protect the people who use the Support website against certain attacks, they do it with the NCsoft Master account but not with the NCsoft Support account.
Can you still follow? Ok.
And because that info is given to NCsoft Support they need to protect it as long as it is stored on their databases. If the personal info is stolen from their databases they can be held liable because they did not protect it well enough.
Now let's say the login details to your NCsoft Support account is stolen by using a packet sniffer, then NCsoft can be held liable because they did not protect that info, the login info isn't even protected with a standard encryption method. Once they have your login info, they have access to your Support account and the tickets that may hold personal data.
Ok. Time for a lesson in what people can do with your first and last name, physical adress, date of birth, etc...
They can make accounts in your name on any website they want and harass people on that website, they can order things in your name and let it be sent to you, they can scam people with your name, give people your adress, your phone number (if it was ever mentioned), your e-mail address(es), they can do lots more nasty things with just that bit of personal info.
Worst case scenario is that one day a government agency comes knocking on your door.
Call me paranoid or whatever but these things do happen.
And once more this is not what could happen to my ow so precious GW account, but what can be done with the personal data that maybe held in one of those support tickets. I'm kind enough to point out this "security flaw" and not exploit it, also some people get payed for doeing stuff like this, I do it because i'm bored. -- talk Qaletaqa Hania 01:16, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
Again, if you found a flaw in their security, send Gaile an Email with the details. And again, people can get much more dangerous info than that simply checking your mailbox before you do. They can also just google or lookup your name in the online phonebook, and get your address and phone number and even see what your house looks like on google. Once I mentioned online when I graduated from what college/program and that I was a foreign student, and that was enough for someone to find out my name, where I live, etc. Most counties also keep public records of marriage certificates, home purchase deeds, etc. The information that Anet has is not something that would be dangerous in the wrong hands, but maybe just an annoyance if they decide to distribute it and have people harrass you, but it's still information that is readily publically available in other places, while the Anet specific tickets and other things are useless to an outsider. And if you know of a site that lets you order something and have it mailed to you without a credit card number, do let me know, please, I have some things I need to buy without paying for them... but that's beside the point. :P I think you're a little bit too paranoid, but still, the best thing to do is tell them specifically what the issue is with their security, then they could look into it and possibly improve. Just saying that one is less secure than the other doesn't tell them much. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 17:29, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
Here's a link: Collect on Delivery. Not many offer it but it exists, and all you need is a name and address. Btw you can look up my name on the internet, you won't find my address, you can find my city but not my address, it's because I never put it somewhere online. And in Belgium where I live, there is not much you can find out about a person without his/her consent, also when goeing thru a Phonebook you first need to know the persons name or address. In Europe someones privacy is much better protected then in the U.S.
I'm also about 90% sure that looking thru someones mail or even thrash is illegal without consent in Belgium (and in many other countries), and i'm not sure but I don't think there are public records of marriage certificates, home purchase deeds, etc... in Belgium. Yes there are other ways to get the same information but i'm not talking about those, ok?
Anyway, I already talked about the problem and given some information about it in several of my previous posts, wich should be enough for them to know what i'm talking about. But here or the dangers that I know of and are the only ones I can test as far as I know without it beeing illegal because I tested it with my account on my network:
  • ARP Poisoning.
  • Packet Sniffer.
I am protected against those but not many people know these threats, and not many firewalls or Internet Security Kits offer protection against these attacks. And to a certain extent NCsoft can protect people who use the NCsoft Support website against those kinds of attacks by using some kind of encryption method if i'm correct.
I'm not doeing this to discredit anyone, it is beneficial for both NCsoft and the people who use the support website if they offer better security around it. Anyway, this is my oppinion about this matter and i'm not willing to discuss this any further if you are just gonna list other ways to get personal data on someone. -- talk Qaletaqa Hania 19:11, 14 August 2009 (UTC)
I just offered my opinion on the "severity" of the threat, just saying that I don't see a reason to worry one way or another, because it sounded to me like you were concerned that an exploit of this vulnerability could really cause people serious problems. Not saying that this shouldn't be addressed, just saying that there is no reason to worry about things like identity theft or other serious problems.
I know CoD existed in the past, but any company doing this today would be little short of out of their minds, which is why I asked for one, as I'm willing to bet they don't exist in the western world anymore.
Anyway, if you told support what you think the problem is, that's all they need. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 21:19, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

(Reset indent) In Europe, CoD is still common these days, one of the companies still doeing it is EMP aka. Large Merchandising in Benelux. I only use CoD because I don't own a credit or debit card.

Also I know I tend to overreact on these things, and yes it's only a small possibility of this happening to anyone using the support website and it probably never has, but it's better to prevent it from happening then doeing nothing at all. I didn't make a support ticket about this because I don't think they would do anything about it then, it's better in my oppinion to let other people also know, it puts more pressure on the company to do something about it even if it's only this small. Would this be banable (look at whisper at the top)? User Unendingfear Scamfail.jpg If so, I'll send a ticket (for scamming), but I want to find out first. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Unendingfear (talk • contribs) at 14:23, 15 August 2009 (UTC).

This is not scamming. If both parties agree to trade it for the price asked, it's a perfectly legal transaction. The seller can fluff up his selling speech as much as he wants. --Arduin talk 14:30, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
The 'seller' was giving misleading information, tho: new and rarest minipet, neither of which are true for the Miniature Temple Guardian. 76.164.111.57 14:46, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
As is, he was just lying, there was no scam that actually took place. If a trade took place, then you may have reported him for scamming the buyer, though it would mostly be buyer's fault for buying an item while knowing nothing about it other than what the seller says, that's buyer stupidity. Always ask publicly for a price check when buying unfamiliar items. But if no trade took place, don't waste your time reporting him, nothing will happen. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 17:40, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
It's very sad when an experienced player takes advantage of someone who doesn't know the game as well, or doesn't check resources such as this wiki before making a purchase. That's what appears to be taking place here. Yet with any transaction, there's a certain amount of "buyer beware" that we all need to keep in mind. I believe the team would not be able to address this particular matter as it appears in this thread. However, if a person made such a transaction and reported it afterwards, support might want to check whether the player making the bogus claims has been guilty of doing so in the past, in which case a pattern of player abuse could be established and he might be actioned.
I guess I would say since you only saw the chat and don't really know if a transaction ever took place, and since you were not directly involved, you might choose not to report this one. However, if you were involved in such a transaction, then I think you might want to let the team know about it. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 21:43, 15 August 2009 (UTC)
This deal can only take place if the buyer remains uninformed about the rarity of presents, which means this only affects n00bs who are unlikely to realize that they drastically overpaid for an item. If they do figure it out, it's probably too late to take appropriate action. Veteran players can offer some indirect protection against predatory trading like this by /reporting bad faith trades (allowing ANet to discover whether there's a pattern or not). I agree that buyers (and sellers) should be wary here, as in real life. I also believe that there are good reasons that there are rules against false advertising.   — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 02:11, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
For accuracy's sake, I do know that there is an actual Rules of Conduct or User Agreement rule against false advertising. Granted, if someone scams, false advertising might play a part, and the team would nab the person for a breach of the anti-scamming rules. But actually prohibiting someone from selling too high or exaggerating the value of something? That gets dicey. I don't know of any company, even those that charge $15 a month, that gets into the trade mediation business. For once they did, it could go from "He promised me a rare Mini and it's common" to "Well, it's rare but only sort of rare, not very rare" and then to things like "This dye doesn't look like he said it would on my armor" and even "I paid 10K too much." (Can you imagine the enormity of trying to deal with that? To give a real-life example: someone buys jeans that cost $48 at Macy's, finds them later for $35 at Penney's, and makes a claim for the difference. The FTC is decidedly not going to get involved. :) )
"False advertising" might involve someone lying and it certainly can cross into scamming, and scamming will result in a block or an account termination. But scamming is more like saying you'll pay 100K and then putting 100G into your window and hoping the person accepts. Advertising can be part of an attempted scam but it can also represent someone not knowing the worth of an item or someone with wishful thinking, hoping to find a buyer who's so interested in an item he will pay a bit more than the going rate. It really is important to do research before buying or trading items. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 19:26, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
Confronting the seller in allchat about the price and rarity of said mini works best. The new people are made aware of the fact that particular mini isn't even rare at all, thus probably isn't worth that much, and the seller gets to be publicly flogged. --Arduin talk 19:40, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
That's what I always do. In that case I'd just say in public chat that the mentioned mini is one of the more common/oldest ones and is worth a few K at most. As Gaile said, sometimes it is the seller who doesn't know the value of their item. This one didn't seem to be that case, but it happens, I've had people thank me for telling them the true value of their item in a pm if I think that they just didn't know. It's funny when the "exposed" sellers later message me with flames saying that I'm screwing up their business. ^_^ User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 20:01, 16 August 2009 (UTC)
After re-reading my post, I realize it makes it seem that I think ANet should be in the business of preventing unfair trades. My apologies. What I meant is that ANet is in a better position to tell if a seller is engaged in any EULA-breaking patterns. Therefore, I think those who consider reporting a suspected scammer should do so and let ANet determine if there's a problem or not. I also like the solutions listed above: letting the seller know that perhaps they are misinformed or offering a counter advert that corrects the facts.
For the record, I don't think ANet, or any MMO operator, ought to be in the business of trade mediation. Fairness is in the eyes of the trading partners. e.g. when anyone states that black dye is worth 7k in PRE, I remind them that it's only worth 1g at the merchant; 7k is just a commonly agreed upon price among traders.   — Tennessee Ernie Ford (TEF) 01:40, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
OK, I just had to jump in on this one because I had something happen along these lines recently and I'm really disappointed with support's response. I was in a town, and I observed someone tell an absolute lie to induce people to trade him items at far less than they were worth. He was basically saying, "buying Gifts of the Traveler 1K, nothing worth more than 1K can drop from Gifts of the Traveler anyway". Now, if he had just asked to buy Gifts of the Traveler for 1K I would never have done anything, even though I know full well that those gifts are worth more than 1K in the current marketplace (more like 5K for unopened Gifts of the Traveler). What I took issue with was the lie that nothing worth more than 1K would drop from those gifts. Mini Yakkingtons are currently going for around 50 ectos, and mini Gwen-chan dolls are worth a lot more than 1K, as are VDSs, and other things that can drop from Traveler gifts. So I asked him, in public chat, to please not lie about the worth of what might drop from the gifts. If he was making an honest mistake, he should have just thanked me for the correction and been done with it. Instead, he cursed me out in a PM and threatened to report ME for scamming. So I reported him for both the lie and the verbal abuse. What I was told by support was that it was a "mutal confrontation" and that no action would be taken against the liar. How does that make any sense? I NEVER used profane or threatening language aginst him. What I did say in PM after he cursed me out was: "Thank you, reported, enjoy your ban". OK I probably should have said nothing in reply and just reported him. But Gaile, how was this a "mutual confrontation" and why did support not care that someone was taking unfair advantage of players who might have been new or unaware of the true value of those gifts? The support ticket number on this is: 090810-001354, but I don't really want to get into an argument with support. I just want to know what you think about this incident. What it does for me is that I am much less inclined to take action against people taking unfair advantage of others ingame, since it appears that support doesn't consider this to be a problem. Thanks! - AnClar 04:58, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Hacked Account

moved from User Talk:Gaile Gray

Incident 090813-001260

I logged into my account and found that I was hacked, every single item was taken, my character was left naked without armour and all my pre searing characters had been taken through after the searing. I had been working on my presearing characters so that they could get the Legendary Defender of Ascalon title. After years of playing I am left with nothing, and little faith in the security for passwords and usernames. I checked my computer for keyloggers and anything that could have compromised my account, my email had not been tampered with and there was nothing suspicious on my computer. I haven't shared my account details with anyone, and I do not have anything that links my email with my guild wars account, I have never blogged or edited the wiki. The only and I mean absolute only time I contacted arenanet I gave them my email for my account, which was when I could not log into my ncsoft account to claim the free storage container (which was never sorted out). This has been the only weak link. When I reported that my account was stolen I was told there was nothing that could be done, and that they were aware that my account was accessed in Germany, but they were unable to return my items because they claimed it was my fault that I didn't take care of my password. I don't trust that my account won't be broken into again because I can't change the e-mail address associated with the account and it is always possible to brute force the password, as I believe happened here. Is there really nothing that can be done? I have asked the support team if I can change the email so my account is more secure, but I haven't had any answer for days and my account has been blocked since I first reported I was hacked (2 days). This leaves me sad and frustrated, and worst of all not wanting to play guild wars.

As far as I am aware, no dice. They won't roll back for your account, and they cannot manipulate items that way, so the milk is spilled. Sorry mate =/ -- Tha Reckoning User Tha Reckoning Sig.png 18:42, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Not 100% sure about email changing, but I think they can. -- Tha Reckoning User Tha Reckoning Sig.png 18:42, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Brute-forcing the password is not at all feasible if you have a good one (there are plenty of resources on the web that will tell you what qualifies as that). Even for a relatively weak password, the attacker would have to take enough attempts that it would be obvious to ArenaNet/NCSoft what they were doing long before they got in (they would likely at least have records of this...). The most likely ways for someone to break into your account is either to correctly guess the password (which means it's far too obvious), for them to infect your computer (keylogger, as you said), or for them to social-engineer it off you. The third option is usually the easiest, but you'd know if that happened to you. -- Sirius (talk) 04:40, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
You got unlucky, mate. Every now and then, the truth of the internet (the fact that it was designed to be public) gets out. In the super-vast majority of cases (we're talking more than a few trailing nines), a strong password is the best defense. Every now and then, though... What sucks is that when it happens, there's really nothing you could have done differently as you had no idea who was going to get into your account. You have my sympathy, man. -- Armond WarbladeUser Armond sig image.png{{Bacon}} 14:09, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
@Reckoning: No, it's not possible to change the email you use as your username to log to GW. I asked from support about this about a year ago and they said no. - J.P.ContributionsTalk 18:52, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
I think it can be done, on sparing occasions. -- Tha Reckoning User Tha Reckoning Sig.png 21:06, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
I don't know why his account would have been hacked. The attacker would need to have known his e-mail address to even attempt to enter, and brute-forcing on Guild Wars is borderline impossible, because (correct me if I"m wrong) it takes successively longer to attempt to log in after you reach a certain number of failed attempts consecutively in a short period of time. A dictionary attack is far more likely, and feasible. This is a question you should not answer under any normal circumstances, and no one would blame if you don't here, and of course if it's still attached to other things then you should either change them first or just not answer, but: What was your password? The best password, in my experience, is one generated by a checksum (hashsum.com has several generators, even a short one will usually suffice, so I recommend MD5, or Adler-32 for sites requiring short passwords) of a real password, which you memorize on your own.
There are numerous other ways. If you use the same password for everything, it is very simple for an attacker to remotely gain access to passwords by examining your cookies, cache, and password settings in your browser, and a keylogger makes it even easier (obviously, accessing those files would require breaching any security systems such as a router or firewall, but once done it's easy).
For a person to want to expend the effort required to do this, though, either you would need to be crazy rich in-game (I wouldn't go to the trouble even for somebody like Wasabi's ridiculous amount of cash), or they would need some sort of weird grudge. Other than that, it would have to be you being irresponsible. If it was somebody being an ass, then you have my condolences and I wish you luck in tracking this person down and violently anatomizing them. If you screwed up, though, all I can really say is that you have to be more careful. --Jette User Jette awesome.png 21:44, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

Not gonna tell you my password even though I have changed it :) but I did use a cobination of numbers and letters (Lower and uppercase). I am certain they must have know my username but I don't use that username or password on anything else. Also I always enter passwords and usernames I never save them to save time logging in to anything. My virus firewall software is all upto date and they nor I have found any keyloggers and cookies are deleted after I close every web page with out fail. After the initial hack into my account I changed the password again but my account was hacked again with the new password which was 12 digits long and completely random full of about six leters upper and lower case and 6 numbers. The second hack seemed just to destroy things that couldnt be transfered between account such as Dungeon guides and my complete incubator kit. During this attempt my account was blocked from anyone logging in and I had to email to have it unlocked to gain access. On the brightside I managed to transfer everything that was left on my heros to another account which they seemed to have not checked so still have loads of Greens golds and runes etc. I have 3 Guild wars accounts which are used all on the same computer and my brothers uses my computer to play as well and quite recently. So if my computer was infected why was only one account hacked. Its strange as I have never given my account user name out for anything other then my NCsoft account.Morra 11:26, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
That sounds like the work of a keylogger to me. What antivirus and antispyware software do you use? --Jette User Jette awesome.png 13:56, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
Brute forcing a password doesn't take very long, surprisingly, and I can say from experience that Guild Wars won't lock you out for at least a few dozen guesses. (Albeit, a brute force would be in the thousands, a number which Support might notice if they flag these things.) A brute force would also only require the user's email, and I know way too many people who use their MSN or Yahoo accounts. A keylogger seems a lot more logical, in any case. Check out Lavasoft's Ad-Aware if you have a minute. It'll pick up anything that alters other programs or tries to run as a SYSTEM process outside of the system32 folder. ··· Danny Pew Pew 17:21, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Well sorry if i have done this wrong as it is my first time doing this and i just chose edit but em anyway.. MY account did get hacked because i downloaded a third party piece of software that compromised my account in SECONDS!! Also I realised your account was accessed in Germany? That is where mine was accessed, in fact i even got the emails in German saying my account details were changed so i email them to A-Net and they fixed it all! Check the delete folder of your emails, if the hacker knows your email address then he was more than likely in your email adress account and deleted these emails! -- 00:02, 24 August 2009 93.107.157.211

Hi. I would like to add something regarding the matter of hacked accounts. I am administrator of official Polish fansite guildwars.pl. Lately lots of our forum users reported that their accounts were hacked. That problem increased within the last month and became a massive problem in the range of Polish community. Of course we always advice users to contact support immidiately, to use proper software to protect their account but 'the milk has spilt'. Almost all players who reported account hack and reported it on forum, have got their accounts back after contacting support. Of course some of them lost characters/items. And here starts the second problem. Accounts are hacked again (after changing passwords, contact emails, checking the systems with antivirus/similar programs) probably by brutal hack. I guess in such situation some players will just give up. Would it be possible to reconsider the possibility of GW login change?-- Guen

At best, I'd imagine ANet might implement a lock-out after too many unsuccessful attempts. This would effectively keep anyone from brute-forcing a password. Best practice would be just to have multiple email accounts. The email I use for my Guild Wars account is a few years old and has never been registered with any forums or other various websites. With Gmail and Hotmail around, it isn't too difficult to just create a new email whenever you need one. ··· Danny Pew Pew 15:27, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
The problem is that probably some of PlayNC accounts were hacked too. I spoke today with one of my friends who have such problems. After the first hack he has changed all the data (PlayNC too) ofcourse after checking if the system is clear. Two days ago he couldn't log in. He changed the passwords and email again, 15 minutes later his GW account password was changed by someone else. People can 'play' with hackers this way over and over. -- Guen

(Reset indent) @ the OP -- the account you wrote about is back in your control. As the team told you, the breach wasn't due to a security issue within the game. Somehow, a person or persons learned or figured out your user name and your password and they accessed your account. We're very sorry that this happened, and we're glad that you can play again. But it's not an option to roll back 6,000,000+ game accounts to restore your account, and we cannot spawn items to replace what the thief stole from you. It may seem cruel or heartless to say that we cannot help you, but truly, we cannot help you beyond what has already taken place. I am sorry about what happened.

@Jette -- good call. It often is a keylogger (as it was for someone in this thread). Keyloggers and Trojans can come from some very innocent-seeming places. :(

@Guen -- Yes, a larger than normal number of Polish players have been hacked recently. The accounts are being stolen by RMTs in China, we can see that. When the player lets us know this has happened, we can restore the accounts and fairly quickly. We know that the RMTs are not getting access through the game, but we do not know how the RMTs are getting the account credentials to access the accounts. There are a few means that they use, including third-party programs, social engineering, insecure external databases, etc. So with that in mind...

I am going to write up an FAQ on account security that may help players secure their accounts and may give some insight into how accounts are stolen and how that can be prevented. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 00:49, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

Thank you Gaile. I hope that members of Polish community will be more carefull. -- Guen15:52,26 August 2009 (UTC)
Hi Guen. One thought that I have is that you could suggest that everyone who is active on the fansite should be sure to use a unique user name and password. That is, they should not use their user name or password for Guild Wars (or their NCsoft Master Account) on any external sites, forums, etc. If you could suggest that people change their password (and user name, when possible) that would be great. Thanks. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 16:36, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
You might also advise that they don't use the same email in the forums as they do for Guild Wars. Basically what Gaile said, but a little more specific. (Most people don't use their emails as usernames, afaik.) ··· Danny Pew Pew 19:50, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

Guild creation problems

Hello Gaile, today I tried to make a guild in Kamadan, and Lions Arch, and to my astonishment, they cant be made there. Hi, Dark Chaos. That sound very odd to me, and I talked with another Live Team member and he agreed that it should be reported to Support so that the team can check into this. It could be as TR said, that coincidental to your attempts to create the guild another person disbanded a guild with the same name, but that's really unlikely. I'd like the team to have a look at this, so please contact support via the means most convenient for you. Thanks. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 18:57, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

Perhaps a mention of who the people are who are "Support". I don't mean the names of individuals but a basic idea of the company/team involved. I'm bringing this up because I recently received word of a dual account theft in my alliance and one of the alliance was 'helpfully' providing an ArenaNet street address, contact phone number and fax number for the victim. I felt like I was banging my head against a brick wall in trying to provide support ticket directions in response... And that was before learning that some members of the victim's guild had been sending emails to ArenaNet to add a chorus to the appeal. -- WarBlade 13:43, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
Ok, WarBlade -- not a bad idea. ArenaNet is the development studio that makes Guild Wars. We're located in Bellevue, Washington. (I work for ArenaNet.) Our Support Team is located in Austin, Texas. They handle, on at least the first level, everything from bug reports to account issues (e.g., stolen accounts) to in-game incident reports (such as scamming, bad names, etc.), to technical support issues (including connectivity issues and software compatibility). When things need to be routed to the studio, the Support Team does so.
There's a detailed page on getting in touch with support here. Contact info is also located on the Support Issues page. It is important to know that it will not speed one's report to contact ArenaNet directly. It really is fastest and best to contact the Support Team directly, sending the info recommended in the first link. That's the best way to get a problem handled or a support-related question answered. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 17:41, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
I'm not sure how to incorporate that into the article, but I'll add it later today. :) -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 17:41, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
Ok, article updated. I think I managed to give enough info on that page to make it clear that someone should contact support rather than trying to work through ArenaNet. It really is the best and fastest way to get help! Thanks again for your suggestion. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 20:21, 28 August 2009 (UTC)
I have re-read the revision a few times now and had hoped to see it combat the perception that Support exists within ArenaNet in Washington, but I don't think it does. If this sentence could be tweaked: "Please note that Support is provided by a specific team" to say "external" and possibly mention Texas or NCsoft if appropriate? That would be clearer I think. -- WarBlade 08:15, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
I understand your thoughts. I've changed the wording to accommodate the clarification request. -- Gaile User gaile 2.png 18:57, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
That works. :) -- WarBlade 19:24, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Password changes

I had a question Gaile, I was told by a friend that if you use the GW store through GW you cannot change the password to your account. I have used the store on many occasions, and could not change my GW password to log in game...it requested something like an account code (I can't recall completely, it was a while ago) or something that I did not have (as I boxed up my game keys ages ago...possibly even threw them away), though my friend said they asked for that due to my account being linked to the store. In order to change my pass, do I need to contact support or NCsoft?--*Yasmin Parvaneh* User yasmin parvaneh sig.png 23:26, 30 August 2009 (UTC)
