About Izzy's page

First off, I'd like to shake your hand for doing this. It takes a lot guts to go up and dea l with problem of that magnitude, so kudos for that.

However, your most recent revert (namely: Noxify's section) of that page has me asking a question: Was deleting is the best idea? That post wasn't well written, but it wasn't trolling or spam of any kind, and it did point izzy to a semi-popular thread that he should (in noxify's opinion) read. I realize that it doesn't belong on Izzy's page, but where does it belong?

Also, for the record, I think most of the reverts on his page have been quite on the mark up till now. Keep it up. -- NUKLEAR User NuclearVII signature 3.jpgIIV 15:49, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

Regina has stated that they read the forums, and without any evidence to the contrary, we assume they read the skill feedback/suggestion pages. If something on a forum is "semi-popular", chances are they'll read it -- there's no need to post links to the thread on Izzy's talk. If there are balancing issues on the skill feedback pages, we assume they'll read those too. Had there been another, and/or better, talk page to move Noxify's comment to, I would have moved it there; there wasn't, so I didn't. I'm not being lazy and just deleting things rather than moving things (you're probably not insinuating that, but I guess some other people will); if there's another place to bring up the issue, I'll move it there. If Noxify wants to advertise that thread, he can post a link on his userpage if he wants to, but as you say, it doesn't belong on Izzy's talk page. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 16:04, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
Maybe we should make a "noticeboard for Anet people" section? I see your point, however. -- NUKLEAR User NuclearVII signature 3.jpgIIV 16:08, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
I don't see a need if it'll be used for advertising links to forum threads or suggestion pages; we already have the portals for the skill feedback sections and their appropriate issues, and forums have their links to threads (and we assume ArenaNet go through both). --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 16:44, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

Ummmm, sorry I already reverted it before reading this. If you wish, you me re-revert it HOWEVER i feel that section is quite necessary. The link is just there to show him that MANY people agree that rangerspike is over powered, I'm not 'advertising' anything, I'm just trying to show him that the GW community supports the idea of a nerf. I didn't say anything wrong, or do anything bad. You delete my important thing but leave the AVATAR OF IZZY! part? Jokes?--'ÑöĭƑýtalk 18:07, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

Sorry for the entry in the block log now, but I saw your comment only after you were already blocked. To answer your question; Izzy's page is not meant to make him notice something, especially with such a topic it is very unlikely that it is not seen by any ANet developer looking through the forums. The avatar thing there is actually a joke which was made addressing Izzy alone whereas a forum topic is most likely read by other devs as well. poke | talk 18:14, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
This section will answer your question as to why I don't think your section should stay. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 18:34, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

RFA comment

Thanks Brains for your comment on my RFA. I have to admit I agree with you that I do have to work on how i deal with wiki-trolls as my behavior in those instances have not reflected the more professional, balanced and objective side of my personality. As said in my RFA, I'm really just wanting feedback this time round, so over the next few months I can proactively work on the negative aspects of my personality, so that I can really help this wiki in the future. Thanks again for your candor though mate, it's appreciated. -- Salome User salome sig.png 16:34, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

If in time you show that you can shed some of those emotions, I'd likely be supporting you in a future RfA (should you not succeed in this one). Good luck :) --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 16:38, 1 September 2008 (UTC)
Hmm, I feel tempted to try, even just to be evaluated again. Plus, it would feel good again to get the attention. As you may recall, there were several neutral votes. Hmm, decisions, decisions. I also have a feeling I'm about to be ec'ed.--TalkPeople of Antioch 16:42, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

Maybe Overzelous with Smiter's Boon Comment Movements

I was looking at the comments on the smiter's boon talk page and it appeared you were moving every comment which wasn't directly to do with the technicalities of the wiki article itself and placing them on the skill feedback page. I think this is a mistake for a number of reasons. For starters it is very common for a talk page to deal with non wiki technical aspects of the subject, this can be demonstrated all over the wiki. Second of all you were moving topics such as ArenaNet_talk:Skill_feedback/Monk/Smiter's_Boon_(PvP)#Ways__to_actually_use_this_skill_now. from the smiter's boon pvp talk page to the developer feedback talk page. This is very clearly not developer feedback. This does not belong on the developer feedback page. The comment about using Glyph of Renewal is a very common discussion for skills, many skill pages suggest skills to get around obvious drawbacks and thus this comment fit very well on the talk page. By moving this kind of talk to the developer feedback page not only did you remove valid topics from the page you also convoluted the developer feedback talk page with irrelevant topics which would make navigating it for Izzy and other users much more difficult than it already is. Discussion related to developer feedback is lost in a wash of out of place topics. I understand talk pages of skills can become problems when a big inbalance takes place and many users log in to give their two cents or gripe and I understand the use of admin discretion to deal with these circumstances. Admins are not able to influence the discussion or content of the wiki more than another user however. If you had used admin tools to protect the page for a few days to prevent inappropriate comments that would be a logical admin action. What you ended up doing was out of the scope of an admin - deciding on your own what content belonged on the page (beyond trolling vandalism and out-of-place feedback) and what content didn't and then proceeding to remove it - going as far as to remove content which was not out of place and relocating it to a page where it was. Admin discretion does not allow you to influence wiki related talk any more than a normal user and I think you crossed this line here. 122.104.161.96 18:05, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Actually, he (and all the other admins) were given the authority to move discussions like that any way they want after consensus decided he should be allowed to do so. That has been explicitally described in the notice at the article's talk page, and is the result of a long discussion seen here. Making it short, the community decided that the talk page of an skill's article is there for discussion about the article, not discussion about the skill. All skill discussion belongs to the feedback pages, including how to best use the skill and any other kind of feedback from players to players and to Arena Net. Erasculio 18:28, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
First of all the length of that talk page makes it pretty clear consensus wasn't reached, the last comments are still discussions with people wanting a solution and a consensus not being reached. Most of it isn't even relevant to the original topic. Either way, had a consensus been reached it would be in the form of policy as this is a pretty clear distinction from normal wiki conventions. Second of all much of the contents moved were not developer feedback and don't belong there. I don't see where admins were given any authority you mentioned. 122.104.161.96 18:39, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
what brains did there was not a sysop action. yes, the original intent of that topic was about the skill and would've been right on that page, but as it developed it became another discussion about balance, which belongs on the skill feedback page. that much about qualification for moving. any user would've had the right to move it to it's correct place. you could call brains being a sysop a coincidence, or him seeing cleanup as one of his sysop duties. - Y0_ich_halt User Y0 ich halt sig.jpg 18:48, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
Given the section that 122 began at the community portal, let's continue this discussion there, instead of cluttering Brains' page. Erasculio 18:51, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
FYI "discussion which is inappropriate may be removed entirely -- this is left to admin discretion". I wanted to make that clear. I agree with Erasculio I have made my point on Brains' talk page. I won't respond to any more comments unless they are made by Brains and even then only if I think I need to. 122.104.161.96 18:54, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
fyi, he never removed anything entirely. as this is a direct response i'm posting it here, anything more on the community portal talk. - Y0_ich_halt User Y0 ich halt sig.jpg 18:59, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
If comments aren't about skill balance specifically, they really shouldn't be moved. If people are arguing about nerfs, it's fine to throw them on the dev pages, but if they're unrelated to balance (as 122.104 is saying) they should be left.
Either way, IMO, the smiter's boon talk page isn't constantly crippled by spam. It, like most nerfed skills, gets about a week of attention from the people lamenting its loss, but after that it goes back to being unused. For the most part, comments made there should stay there. -Auron 19:03, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
the discussion we're talking about wasn't even about smiter's boon anymore after three or four comments. - Y0_ich_halt User Y0 ich halt sig.jpg 19:16, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
at least not enough about it to qualify for any of the two talk pages it's been one imo. i think it would best suit a user talk page. - Y0_ich_halt User Y0 ich halt sig.jpg 19:19, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Problems with uploading image

Hi Brains, could you plx help me with something? I've been trying to upload an updated image for an image I've already uploaded before. But whatever I do the old image shows. I must be doing something wrong, but I have no clue what :( It's about this image http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Image:User-Dewdrop-Faye.png Thanks in advance ;) -- User_talk:DewdropPepper - Dewdrop talk 11:23, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Due to issues with the server image cache, it sometimes takes up to an hour for the new images to show. If after that amount of time, your image is still not correct you can try purging the cache by adding ?action=purge to the end of the url in your address bar. This is not something you are doing wrong, it's a problem with the server and Anet is (and has been) trying to make it better for awhile. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 12:31, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
You can also try clearing your cache; in Firefox hold Shift then click reload, in Internet Explorer hold Ctrl and click reload (or F5). Also to purge just click the clock in the top right corner. --Kakarot Talk 13:20, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
Just don't do it right away.. I've had the cache totally get stuck, and the images actually revert (stats change) if I try to do that immediately after reuploading. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 14:20, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

the new one is displaying on my screen as well. Perhaps it is just a cache issue on your side. I also find changing the thumbnail size helps reset the image. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 19:32, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Hell, you could even argue that it's not about balance, because it's just a link to my own user page. It was meant as a friendly remark, a roadsign, for the lakc of a better word.

I've already given you the answer; your skill balancing issues (whether directly or indirectly) belong in the ArenaNet namespace, not Izzy's talk page. euhm about izzy's talkpage

i see youre doing youre job quite well (gg for that) but shouldnt some issues stay on there. The spoil victor thing was not only the skill (in fact ppl use it in combination WITH ss and empathy and that shit) the thing is its more about the amulet of protection.Imo move the discussion if it gets to long to that page but keep the first 3 posts of put a conclusion yourself and movethe rest to that page.I mean yes it keeps hes page clean but hell most of the time click the link and see an unmanageble discussion anyway Lilondra User Lilondra Eviscerate.jpg*poke* 06:01, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Why does a balance issue or skill feedback belong on his talk page, even though there is another place for it and that place has been linked? "I mean yes it keeps hes page clean" -- quite; I believe that's one of the major points for this whole thing. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 11:33, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
the issue is not only spoil victor not only the amulet etc Lilondra User Lilondra Eviscerate.jpg*poke* 15:32, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
There were other aspects yes, but, as it was moved to a discussion page and not the actual feedback article, that's not a problem. Other pages/discussions can be made for those aspects if necessary. The main issue was about Spoil Victor, and that discussion included its problems, possible solutions, and suggestions on how to improve it. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 16:18, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Proposal

You're a sysop and that's the closest as I've got how to bring up this issue. It appears that adding "Bring Pain Inverter" to various mission pages seems to be a knee-jerk reaction with people, to add to "Skill Recommendations".. Does it really need to be mentioned everywhere? I figure after it's introduced a couple times it goes without saying, or is overall unnecessary anyway.- VanguardUser-VanguardAvatar.PNG 17:40, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

I have no opinion (or authority) about this, so I'll just point you to where you can get more responses: GWWT:MISSIONS is probably your best bet. You could add a request for comments to get more input if necessary. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 17:51, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Question

Hey, I have a tiny question regarding the connection between my IP address (212.45.32.220) and my GWW account. Before I made an account here on the wiki I had already written a tiny article (namely the one on crafting), and now of course this article is not in the list of my account's contributions, but in the list of my IP's contributions. Is there a way to move these contributions from my IP to my real account? This is obviously not a major issue but if you know a way to solve it, please let me know. -- Jair 21:03, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Unacceptable signature

Hello Brains. It has come to my attention on the elections page that User:Cursed_Angel has changed their signature to Cancer Angel. This is against wiki policy. Just thought you should know. --Burning Freebies 07:21, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

How is it against policy? --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 11:14, 20 October 2008 (UTC)
I noticed the section on his talk page and answered there. By the way, if you're informing other users about policy and whatnot, be sure to read it and understand it first; having a different name in your signature to that of your username isn't restricted (within reason). Also, policies aren't technically "laws" and to abide by a policy isn't to make something "legal" - law implies something different. Policy is the written form of what and how users do things, and law implies explicit rules that are set up in order to follow to the word. I'll not go further into wiki politics and whatnot, but what I'm trying to say is... don't make comments about policy so rigid and lawyery. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 11:42, 20 October 2008 (UTC)

If I may suggest..

This probably belongs on the Admin noticeboard, but as you are the main Sysop enforcing the rules set on volatile talk pages, I decided to bring my concern to your attention directly. If there has been a change in the way volatile talk pages are dealt with I have not yet informed myself of, please consider this message as unsent. To the point: I believe this discussion, which started as a simple though imo not really elegant question towards Izzy, has turned into a discussion between users about Izzy, is not usefull, inappropriate and (though this is purely my own opinion) contains elements that could easily be interpreted as offensive towards Izzy and the balance team, and thus violate GWW:NPA, and should be removed. Please do not interpret this message as a bad remark towards your (or any other sysop's) performance on volatile talk pages, as I think you are doing a great job, I am merely expressing my concern in this particular case. Thanks. WhyUser talk:Why Are We Fighting 15:58, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Removed it, kept the original question - if anyone on that talk pages knows the actual answer, it'd be Izzy (not to mention that it was directed to him); the rest is speculative and ... so helpful! Yeah. Anyway, if anyone wants to complain, and I know they will, please take it to the community portal or another admin.
In future, please take these issues to the noticeboard. Acting on that talk page by my own choice (even if rather reluctantly) is one thing, being sought out specifically for it is another. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 17:15, 23 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi Brains12! You deleted Unworthy Dead (linked from Rift Warden) a while ago and I'm questioning if I can re-create this article as a part of our Historical content category. What do you think? BigBlueUser Big Blue Icon.pngtalk 12:50, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

I checked its history and the only reason it was deleted was because it contained no relevant information. Feel free to recreate it :) - anja talk 14:52, 21 November 2008 (UTC)

Category Stubs

Could you provide some guidance on how the narrow stub categories. I made some category changes and had them reverted back to the main Stub category. The instructions on the Category:Stub and General Formatting pages both mention to make the category best fit, and that the main category should be empty. If the selections I made were incorrect, what would have been the correct choice? I am left confused on what I should be doing. Just trying to help. Thanks Tsafran 19:05, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

It's great that you're cleaning up those general stubs. However, some of the specifications you've made I think aren't exactly correct, and I changed them to what I think fits best - it's just a matter of determining what the article is based on and documenting (not just what it includes). For example, a guide about playing a profession might contain some build ideas, but that doesn't make it a build stub. If an article doesn't fit in a specific sub-category, then it could be put into the main category - it's a stub, but it might not fit into one of those specifications.
That probably doesn't help though.. I'm not sure how to clarify it further. What may help is looking through the sub-category for similar articles - for example, if you think an article might be a lore-stub, look through the lore stub category and see if the articles there are similar. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 19:23, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

i uploaded the new pic but the thumbnail is still the old picture? any solutions? when you click the thumbnail it shows my picture but that kind of defeats the purpose if you can't see it without clicking the pic.

plz reply on the zaishen rank discussion page as i will be checking that and not your talk page for replies (since i made a sub section with the exact text as above). tyvm! ^^ --Uchiha Lena 01:52, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

GWW:DELETE

Actually, GWW:DELETE says nothing about it. If it did, you would have to have banned yourself some months ago XD.
And darn... i was just filling up the report to the admin noticeboard.--Fighterdoken 00:02, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

The policy mentions to discuss on the talk page if one disagrees with the deletion; that in conjunction with the multiple reverts and ignoring of the warnings (which, yes, is more major than what the deletion policy says) is enough for a block, in my opinion - I'm not blocking solely for the deletion policy.

What do you mean by can't update the image? If you are referring to the notice saying: "Warning: You are uploading a file that was previously deleted ..." then that is merely providing you with the reason the old image was deleted as it also does for pages and you can just upload as normal. --Kakarot Talk 14:14, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Blocking User then its IP

I've been seeing a lot of blocking to IPs that are to be suspected to be blocked users. Isn't it enough to ban the user already?--ShadowFog 15:38, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

Some people tend to circumvent their block by using proxy accounts, so those proxy accounts get blocked and the user's block will likely be extended. The software can block the user's actual IP by itself (provided the options are enabled), but it obviously can't do the same to proxies. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 15:43, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
If a user's editing privileges have been blocked for violating policy, that means they don't get to edit the wiki during the time of their block. If they are allowed to come in with proxy ip addresses and edit the wiki, that just makes the block meaningless. In the case of both Noxify and Lilondra, they are openly claiming the edits either with entries to the edit summaries, or by replicating their signatures on their edits. Thus the proxy addresses they have used have been blocked, and those edits have been removed. --Wyn's Talk page Wyn 16:18, 7 December 2008 (UTC)
When I was blocked, the IP was blocked (yesterday). Now I'm not posting anything to Izzy's page that's not directed to him. BTW saying confirmed was... I laughed when I saw myself blocked. The reason was okay I must admit Boro 07:30, 8 December 2008 (UTC)
I have a question Brains...my husband and I share an IP because of a common router, I am concerned that if he is banned, will I get the same punishment due to this? In the case someone assuming he may try to dodge a block on my account, I assure you he does not have my password, but this is still, obviously a concern I would have. Thank you :) --*Yasmin Parvaneh* User yasmin parvaneh sig.png 11:33, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
The automatic block on an IP only lasts for 24 hours. The IP blocks mentioned above are proxy accounts, so those kinds of blocks wouldn't affect you at all. Usually when an IP address is blocked "Anonymous users only" is ticked so that other people can still use their account if they happen to be on the same IP address. Worst case scenario you could find your IP blocked for 24 hours, but I suspect most admins would remove the automatic block if you asked them. Misery 11:53, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
You can still edit using an unblocked account - even on blocked IP addresses - you just need to login. poke | talk 20:49, 3 February 2009 (UTC)

ShadowFog's block

I've reduced ShadowFog's block back to the remainder (more or less) of his previous duration of 3 days. He has contacted me by email claiming that you may have lengthened the block on him for this edit, and that it was not him. I think I believe him so I proceeded to undo the lengthened ban. If that was not the reason why you lengthened the ban, then please do as you see fit. -- ab.er.rant User Ab.er.rant Sig.png 02:52, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

The usage of a proxy, as well as the style of posting and the post itself, was enough for me to assume it was ShadowFog. I still believe it was so, but I'll defer to your judgement. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 03:04, 11 December 2008 (UTC)

Well, it's not like there aren't any lurkers who would love to give you or Brains some bias given how you two are quite visible users. I'd rather give users some benefit of doubt or leniency (even if it goes against instincts) than lose contributors. But I admit my relative inexperience when it comes to proxies and such when compared to the two of you. -- ab.er.rant User Ab.er.rant Sig.png 00:06, 12 December 2008 (UTC)

wut

User_talk:Isaiah_Cartwright#Thankies.21 is up with that? As soon as a negative comment comes in, you go over there and boom, discussion is over. I guess it wouldn't be over if it was full of positive things, would it?

Stop being a retarded ass kisser kthx. Pretty sure Izzy should be able to handle negative comments. Mini Me talk 19:01, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Sometimes it helps to check historials on the wiki. Basically, Izzy's (and a few other pages like ursan) became so misused that in order to avoid spam, rants, flame-wars and general off-topic discussions, they became heavily moderated to the point that anything that may be the source of problems is shot down in the act. It's not about Izzy handling negative comments, but about preventing the need for admins to come later and start spreading bans left and right for NPA breaches, trolling, and general disruptive behavior.
I think here you can find all the reasons why such pages are so heavily moderated.--Fighterdoken 19:16, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
Wow! I totally didn't know that! Thank you so much! Mini Me talk 19:17, 16 December 2008 (UTC)
It's got nothing to do with ass kissing, it's to do with going in before the flames, balance rants, and personal attack start to keep the page somewhat readable and less forum-like. Also, it'd help if you didn't attack me either. Less trolling would be nice too. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 21:10, 16 December 2008 (UTC)

Templates and Images

Do you remember the XXXX templates and the images I uploaded I mistakenly put in the main name space in October? If not check my talk to refresh your memory. This is the final result and the sum of 2 months wiki education and experimentation. It is a mission progress chart for tracking any number of characters, any mix of professions, and can easily be used to compare your character(s) progress with anyone else who is using it too. Please... Take a look and tell me what you think. Elric Coy 15:52, 17 December 2008 (UTC)

I'm not into the whole "pages for characters' title/mission/quest/hero progression" thing, so I'm not really the best person to ask. However, at first glance, it's not really easy to tell what means what (just looks like boxes to me), and I'm not sure how I'd go about editing it. Using the icons that are found in-game and are well-known seems simplest to me, personally. But as I said, I'm not the best person to judge this sort of thing. --User Brains12 Spiral.png Brains12 \ talk 16:02, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
Well, it only takes a few seconds of thought to read the chart. In Nightfall there are 6 levels of completion for any given mission. Standard, Expert, and Masters for normal mode and again for hard mode. So, reading any given box from left to right, each darkened box represents a level of completion. The black/grey part of the bar represents normal mode and red part of the bar represents hard mode. Editing and usage is explained on the template. Sorry, I assumed you would be able to find it. Instructions for use. Anywho... as you said, you are the wrong person to ask so... Elric Coy 16:32, 17 December 2008 (UTC)
