Question....

Panic and Business has been the bane of the wiki for a while, but is Special:Upload still on the list? (If I'm annoiyng, block me for a week and I'll shut up). >< -- Wandering Traveler 05:02, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Yes, that's still on my list. An update will come soon. poke | talk 15:30, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Twitter feed

This is more a question as to how the twitter feed works than a critique, but, today's note about the weekend event came through with a spelling error (competetive vs. competitive). Is that not generated from the activities page? Tanetris spelled it correctly when he updated the page. -- FreedomBound 14:45, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Oh, thanks for that! Didn't notice this morning :)
And no, the weekend event is not automatically generated from somewhere else, as I tend to put more information in the tweet if I can. So I edit that manually. poke | talk 15:29, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

Archived

Unresponded. :( - Tanetris 15:42, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

I currently have no good idea how to solve that efficiently. Also I talked to you about this on IRC already :P poke | talk 15:45, 2 September 2009 (UTC)
While we didn't come to any meaningful conclusion on the archiving, there are also the other two issues I brought up there: handling predictions so we don't have to edit every day, and pulling zcoin rewards automaticaly. - Tanetris 16:16, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
That is actually what I was referring to. poke | talk 16:18, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
The data is not available to DPL since it's not in a template. If the text has been copied verbatime, a regexp should have no problem tho', so I guess poke's bot may be able to do it. But poke would know that better than me. Backsword 10:19, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Google thing

The google gadgets are rss feeds, but for some reason when I go to the gw2 site for it, it wants to download something and let IE give me the info, instead of putting on my google page. I've tried searching for GW2 through google's rss search, but it doesn't come up, while the GW1 version does, that's really what I'm asking to have changed. I don't know, maybe I'm missing something, I can't say I know a lot about rss feeds... (Satanael 03:05, 3 September 2009 (UTC))

This is the feed URL: http://www.guildwars2.com/en/rss.xml poke | talk 10:43, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
Oh, I figured it out, I had seen that, but it took me a second to figure out how to tell my google page about it. Thanks (Satanael 15:21, 4 September 2009 (UTC))

Looks good guys, but for some reason the first table has got some No's showing up randomly... (Satanael 16:24, 4 September 2009 (UTC))
Doesn't look random, looks like it's when the most recent editor is not the owner... Not sure if that's intended, but it's kind of nice. -- FreedomBound 16:27, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
Yep, that's the intention. poke | talk 16:36, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
Huh, okay, that seems like something useful. Myabe just add a short couple of sentences at the top saying what they are and why they are there, so people know right away without having to figure it out (as obviously I was incapable of doing anyway) (Satanael 16:41, 4 September 2009 (UTC))
Can you change the alt text to "not the owner", or (preference) have it in a different column so you could sort on it? -- FreedomBound 16:42, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
I think that was the original intention seeing that it was in an extra column but since the sorting obviously doesn't work on Template Usage / Images it got merged with the other column. --SilentStorm Talk to me 16:57, 4 September 2009 (UTC)

Alternative category

Hey poke, I noticed a little bug with our lists. Whenever the list shows the "alternative category", what it's showing is the "category B" from our creation template rather than whatever category is not represented by the list. So, for example, if you go to Feedback:Guild Wars 2 mechanics suggestions, there are 3 suggestions that list "mechanics" as their alternative category, rather than whatever other category the creator chose for those suggestions. I'm not sure how easy this would be to fix, but I thought it would be nice if we can. (Satanael 20:50, 4 September 2009 (UTC))

I know that, and I'm still thinking of a good way to solve that. As soon as I have a good idea I'll change the lists and the background templates to display it correctly. For now we will just have to live with it, sorry. poke | talk 20:54, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
That's okay, I just wanted to make sure you were aware of it before the lists got too long, in case the number of entries under the current setting becomes an issue. (Satanael 20:56, 4 September 2009 (UTC))
Well, it only affects the content in the alternative category; otherwise all lists are showing the correct entries, so it will be a rather stealthy update later :) poke | talk 20:59, 4 September 2009 (UTC)
He he, you'll be like the Solid Snake of wikis :P (Satanael 21:01, 4 September 2009 (UTC))

AI Bugs

Hey Poke. Are you going to move the work in progress from the bugs page over to the new namespace? Would be kind of a big help, since so many things have not yet been resolved. I sure am not the only one looking at a blank bug page now, wondering if we have to manually copy all the old things over, cause I fear nothing of the old work will get done if we don't move it to an open space. In case you're wondering, all in progress is not marked red X or green hook. --Golgarit Raven 07:21, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

you can't copy it over because the licensing is different, the old page will stay where it is and get issues resolved still, in a similar manner to what the Devs. are doing with their talk pages. ~ PheNaxKian Image:User_PheNaxKian_sig.jpg 10:29, 5 September 2009
Yes, the bug team will still visit the old pages and make sure they go through all open points. poke | talk 12:25, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
The staff is fully aware of the existing bugs, that's why there is a link to them from the open page so you can still view them. -- Wyn talk 12:28, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
Oh well, ok then.. as long as they can hook off the old ones or get questions answered that they may have about the reports.. ^^ --Golgarit Raven 12:33, 5 September 2009 (UTC)
If they have more questions regarding existing reports, the conversations can continue on the current bug talk page. Simply link to the existing issue. The old pages have been protected from further edits from the community. -- Wyn talk 12:39, 5 September 2009 (UTC)

Skill data

It seems some parameters sent to skill data get carried over to later calls on the same page. See User:Shard/Sandbox for an example. ~Shard Image:User Shard Sig Icon.png 00:12, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

is borked. If you use adr mode, it carries the adr defaults over to every call after. I suspect upkeep and health are the same, but too lazy to test and shard's being unhelpful. I've reverted the noobish templates to what they were before until you can fix this (the rest of us have no idea wtf is in that code). -- Armond WarbladeImage:User Armond sig image.png{{Bacon}} 00:25, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

I'm so unhelpful that I accidentally fixed it by myself without Armond's help. ~Shard Image:User Shard Sig Icon.png 01:18, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, sorry for that. Btw. Shard, why didn't you tell me yesterday that you wanted it bold and zero values not ignored? <_< poke | talk 07:52, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
He did tell you he wanted zero values unignored, but I overruled him because that's dumb. Bold I don't recall ever coming up in conversation. -- Armond WarbladeImage:User Armond sig image.png{{Bacon}} 16:24, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
Also, wikichu isn't transforming N/A arguments to nil. -- Armond WarbladeImage:User Armond sig image.png{{Bacon}} 16:25, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
Huh? So you didn't get how the replacement was done after all? Also what N/A arguments?? poke | talk 17:45, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
Cleave, Thrill of Victory. Also, Shard's the only one on wiki who wanted zero values not ignored, so he's the one who changed it. It was fine for "the rest of us". -- Armond WarbladeImage:User Armond sig image.png{{Bacon}} 18:01, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
Well, we should decide on something then.. Also Shard can fix his N/As himself.. poke | talk 18:56, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
I can and will. People should be able to use explicit zeroes. It comes in handy when suggestion a certain skill's recharge or cast time be 0 when it normally isn't. You can still always omit a value by ignoring it. Allowing 0s gives it more functionality at no cost. ~Shard Image:User Shard Sig Icon.png 08:44, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

Deleting EA, EAR, etc

Kind of hard to pick one place to put this, but I'd like to oppose the deletion of all those templates because they are far more intuitive than Template:Skill data. Misery 11:57, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

The only thing that makes those templates better is the length of their names, but that could be easily done for the new one as well.. And it's really not intuitive at all to have to remember 9 ambigous template names that are all for one thing, on a wiki which main idea is not to post skill data in that way... poke | talk 17:50, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
Except they all follow a logical layout that I don't even have to look up. I would have to read the documentation in order to use the all inclusive template. That is the point, the intuitive nature of those templates. In any case, what does deleting them achieve? The templates are designed to be subbed so the end effect on the wiki at any point will be exactly the same, it's just like having aliases set up. I am proposing they are useful, even if you don't find them so, and that there is no benefit to deleting them, so we should not do it. Misery 07:45, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
Agreed with Mis, for his reasons. Templates should be equally usable by wiki nubs and wiki pros, not just by wiki pros. -Auron 07:47, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
Though i find {{skill data}} easy to use, i agree with Misery and Auron. Not all might find it as easy. - J.P.ContributionsTalk 08:12, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
Took me about two minutes to learn how to use it, but I'm not throwing my support in either camp. -- Armond WarbladeImage:User Armond sig image.png{{Bacon}} 13:52, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
In passing it seems at least one user noted a change in behaviour (Template Talk:EAR). I haven't looked into it myself, but it should probably be investigated before any wholesale change. --DryHumour 14:43, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
That issue should be fixed already. -- Armond WarbladeImage:User Armond sig image.png{{Bacon}} 14:56, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
I don't care if you want to keep some of the templates, for example {{EAR}} and {{AAR}}. However some of them, such as {{EA}} or {{ER}} just make no sense, if you are able to simply leave out the value you don't want to display.. poke | talk 15:44, 8 September 2009 (UTC)
How do you reproduce ER using EAR? I can't see how it's done. Misery 11:38, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
{{EAR|E||R}}, if the default values of EAR are changed to empty instead of zero. poke | talk 12:24, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
Ah, see I tried putting zero in instead. Hrm, I won't cry too loudly then if ER and EA are deleted, but it still requires extra knowledge to use EAR in that way. Misery 13:10, 11 September 2009 (UTC)
See the section above for the zero thing.. poke | talk 13:58, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

Thoughtful

I have a thoughtful category/page suggestion. Not sure how to go about it. It would help as well was thinking on Grouping elites by profession (no details) But like a few notes at the bottom of 'other' pages like reference pages of each elite area so they could look at details, but also add in this page what boss the elite can be obtained from (Along with what campaign - if necessary). Thoughts? ♥ Ariyen ♀ 03:36, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Not sure if I understand you right; something like this? For a list of elite skills by profession, use the normal skill lists and sort by description, as all skills begin with "Elite XY". poke | talk 10:49, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Similar, but not quite. More like

Warrior - Strength - Axe Mastery - Hammer Mastery - Swordsmanship - Tactics - No Attribute
Prophecies (elite names under each of them that resides in this area, but in alpabedical order)
Factions (same)
Nightfalls (same)
Core (same)

For core it'd be miscellaneous and on and on with the rest. ♥ Ariyen ♀ 11:25, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

There are galleries of all that, and categories are all done for uniques. Category:Unique weapons by profession Category:Unique item galleries by attribute. Oh duh, you mean skills not items (I think I've been doing this too long). -- Wyn talk 11:59, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Not talking about where to capture it. they can find that out with those other links. Just well what the elite skill is, what profession and category like warrior tactics so to speak it's under and what Campaign it's from. No detail on the elite skill, just name. (Sorry, forgot to sign a moment ago to this.) ♥ Ariyen ♀ 18:13, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
List of elite skills, List of elite skills by campaign? poke | talk 17:58, 21 September 2009 (UTC)
Similar to list of elite skills by campaign, but changed to list of elite skills by profession. I'm considering in making it, but only if it'd be worth doing, etc.
I can do a 'temp' and add it to my user page and then do a link to see what I mean, if liked. ♥ Ariyen ♀ 18:13, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

I prefer seeing timestamps uniform in format (including colours, fonts, etc). :/ -- Brains12 \ talk 19:09, 24 September 2009 (UTC)
Oh tanks! But, aren't they templates? I read a policy about signuchas and it says they are not allowed. :( Nectarines 19:13, 24 September 2009 (UTC)
you're not allowed to use templates because they're transcluded (so if you used it on 100 pages and then went and changed that template the 100 pages with the tempalte on would have to update). to get round that you "subst:" them (so instead of seeing {{Templatename}} in the edit window you'd see the actual code ) this means that it's not effected by any future updates of said tempalte. However the problem remains that these pages will become targets for vandalism (because anyone can edit them), the templates i told you to use are...special I guess is the best way to put it =p. they're "magicwords" they're built into the MW software, so vandals can't get at them. ~ PheNaxKian Image:User_PheNaxKian_sig.jpg 19:18, 24 September 2009
That means they are ok, awesome! :D I kind of noticed that they weren't your usual kind of template, at least not how I imagined templates to work. Anyway, tanks. :3 Nectarines// 09:30 25 September 2009(UTC)

Hey

Do we have anywhere a list of available fonts? Basically I am looking for something like this but for fonts. (Satanael | talk) 06:34, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

They have the same name as ones in your Office Word so you just go <span style="font-family:Font name goes here">Text goes here</span>. At least thats how I do it but poke might know a more advanced method. :D HF Nectarines // 13:27 26 September 2009(UTC)
Yeah, I got that much, but they're not exact, for example Times New Roman is just times when you put it in the code. Also, we don't have all of them, for example typing in Helvetica and Gothic just reverts back to the default font (arial?). Or, at least it does on my browser. I kinda have the feeling there is no straightforward answer, but I just don't know enough about it, which is why I asked poke, because he knows everything. That's right EVERYTHING! (Satanael | talk) 14:27, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
Working with fonts on the internet is very difficult, because they are rendered by the browser so everone who wants to see the font actually is required to have that font installed. As such you cannot easily say which font is available to everybody, simply because you probably have other fonts installed than others. That's also the reason why there won't be really a list with available fonts somewhere, simply because there is no ruling in what fonts are available (one could simply delete all fonts but one for example). And there is only a small number of fonts available on Windows, Mac and Linux.
I have some lists with compatible "standard" fonts available on multiple systems by default, but I doubt you will be satisfied with such (the one list actually only has 13 entries with most of them being different forms of the standard sans-serif). So to customize your signature you will probably prefer to simply forget about other people and use a custom font you have and you like. Adding a second font to the list that is used in case the first is not available makes it safer.
Regarding Times New Roman – works fine for me :) poke | talk 14:45, 26 September 2009 (UTC)
I'm not surpirised by either the answer or the fact that poke knew it. In any case, whatever list you have I would be interested in, at least so I can play with it a little and see what I have on my computer. Thanks for your help poke! (Satanael | talk) 21:59, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Grr.. Where's the code for wikichu? I want it ._. -- Halogod35 00:17, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

Wikichu uses multiple different bot frameworks, most of them written by myself, and a lot single scripts to perform special tasks. Sorry, but I won't publish the code. poke | talk 05:13, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
I bet you'd sell it for a price, though. Vili 点 User talk:Vili 05:16, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
Damn. :/ I just wanted a very very simple code just to change (elite) to (Elite) or.. make any *{{skill icon|(Insert elite skill)}} into *{{skill icon|(Insert elite skill)}} ([[Elite]]). What family is this wiki btw? -- Halogod35 12:26, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
Er, it should actually be "(elite)" - we tend to capitalise only when it's a proper noun for things like that. Not sure what you mean by "family".-- pling 13:41, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
Well fine, (Elite) into (elite) ): and family, such as wikimedia or mediawiki or... wikia? -- Halogod35 14:03, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
There's a little badge at the bottom right of every page that says, "Powered by Mediawiki". Does that answer your question? -- FreedomBound 14:05, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
Hopefully. -- Halogod35 14:07, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
Guild Wars Wiki is not part of a wiki family. We are fully custom.
And to request bot tasks, please go here. If you plan to use an own bot to change things that go against existing formatting guidelines or consensus, you can be sure that the bot will be blocked without hesitation. poke | talk 14:30, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
Yes sir I understand. I'm going to use PhP bot, would that work? -- Halogod35 14:32, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
What does that stand for? If it's a MediaWiki bot framework it will probably work, yes. poke | talk 14:34, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
Hypertext Preprocesser. -- Halogod35 14:36, 16 October 2009 (UTC)
Either PHP or php then please.. And no, you will need a MediaWiki compatible bot framework, not just any bot for whatever task. poke | talk 15:08, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

No sorry, we decided before that we won't update old signatures just because of some changes (or deleted images or whatever) to not unnecessarily ping people's watchlist. poke | talk 21:23, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
then I gotta do it each one myself?:-( - Wuhy Image:User_Wuhy_sig.jpg 21:33, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
No, you simply don't do it and leave the images as they are. poke | talk 21:45, 24 October 2009 (UTC)
You could just re-upload the image at 18x18 instead, if you want. –Jette 22:01, 24 October 2009 (UTC)

Quick question

Just out of curiosity did any of the recent updates do anything to the Prefix index? To give an example of what I am referring to, when I go to delete a guild page; for guild cleanup in this case; and then go to check for any subpages, etc by clicking one of the three; Guild's subpages, Guild's talk pages, or Guild's images; links in the toolbox nav it no longer just lists just the pages that start with the guilds name but instead starts the list with the guild name and then goes on to list what looks to be all pages in the given namespace after that name alphabetically (I hope that actually makes sense). To further test that this was not a problem with the actual links in the toolbox I went to the above linked page and entered my username with the namespace set to user and this is the result. Guess what I am asking is whether this was simply a feature change of sorts that I somehow missed reading about or whether it was some kind of bug, error or something else entirely?

On a completely unrelated topic but important none the less, glad to hear the surgery went ok :) --Kakarot Talk 02:12, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Thanks ^^ But yes, you are right. MediaWiki 1.15 somehow changed the behaviour of PrefixIndex. I'm not sure if it was intended or not, at least they broke the original idea of that special page – or at least changed the behavious – but forgot to adjust the formular for it. After some research I found a solution for it, and it really makes sense and is now consistent with the API. The parameter "from" selects only those pages that follow (alphabetically) after the given name. The, by the formular incorrectly, unused parameter "prefix" replaces the old behaviour of PrefixIndex' "from". So now Special:PrefixIndex and Special:AllPages are consistent in parameter names and behaviour and match the API too. But I don't know why they don't set the "prefix" parameter via PrefixIndex (as it should do).
Anyway, I added a quick fix to GWWT so those lists should work again. poke | talk 10:14, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Dredge Gutter

Hi, it was suggested some time ago that this article should be split. There was no consensus for splitting on the talk page, and the article lay idle for a few months. Just yesterday, Ariyen split it without looking at the discussion and without having obtained a consensus beforehand. I reverted it, but she's re-reverted again. I don't want to break 1RR, so could you (assuming you agree with my argument) put it back the way it was? Just to clarify, while I don't believe the article should be split, my objection here is to splitting the article preemptively, without taking into consideration the discussion on the talk page. Thanks! -- Hong 16:23, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

Sorry for the late response, but I had to think about it for a while to make my own opinion on it. While I don't see either of the resolutions as wrong, I have to agree that it might make more sense to have the NPC pages split to be able to state correct information for both without having to explain which line applies to whom always (because that would look messy).
I agree thought that it was not the best way to split it with ignoring a (recent) ongoing discussion, but given that the page was tagged for split since April and no discussion was there for months, I don't see a too big problem there. poke | talk 13:13, 18 October 2009 (UTC)

on 29 October, you deleted a page called Technical Support because it was misplaced. Where should I have put it? ~ Un Bunny The preceding unsigned comment was added by 98.176.24.157 (talk) at 01:33, 25 October 2009 (UTC).

Well, the page name was very generic to begin with; a guide how to add a command line argument to the GW shortcut isn't really needed on a separate page, and it already exists. The argument itself is explained on that page as well, so we don't really need an additional page for that (also see the talk page, as there was some discussion about that parameter). poke | talk 13:42, 25 October 2009 (UTC)
