Hey all, I've moved the Gladiator Discussion to an archive, which you can see in the box on the right.

As for the Gladiator title changes I worked on awhile back, I'm pretty happy with the results. I think the hardcore Arena and Team-Arena players are still differentiated from the casual, but the casual Arena player has a good way to make partial progress and get something for their time. I still play RA and TA a reasonable amount, and so overall it's pretty positive.

Note: Anything signed "Morello" is also me. I'm newb @ wiki, so I'm still finding all sortsa good stuff here :)

There is some stuff I'm working on where a good sampling of feedback would be beneficial;

1) What are your favorite GW1 skills? Why?

2) What types (new or existing) prestige rewards drive you personally as a player? Prestige rewards are any reward that does not effect your power or ability. Examples would be PvP skins, titles, or rank emotes.

3) PvE players: What has drawn you into PvP in the past? What factors deter you from PvP?

1) What are your favorite GW1 skills? Why?

  • Warrior's Endurance because of the enormeus Energy gain of the skill.
  • Word of Healing is a great healing spell no matter what you are playing.
  • D-Shot how doesn't love that skill :)
  • Meteor Shower insane AoE damage and KD.

2) What types (new or existing) prestige rewards drive you personally as a player? Prestige rewards are any reward that does not effect your power or ability. Examples would be PvP skins, titles, or rank emotes.

  • Getting my hall full i really want to see how my hall looks like when i got R6 in Maxed title's track.

3) PvE players: What has drawn you into PvP in the past? What factors deter you from PvP

  • Just messing around with your build without anyone complaining about it (AB mostly). and what factors deter me is the fact that you need to be experienced to get in a good team and i good teams you will get experienced.

Ryudo's Answers

1.My favorite GW1 skills and why:

  • Melandru's Resilience. (too often ignored, makes for great lol moments in FA when playing it on a warrior)
  • Ride the Lightning (Weak, yes, but funnier than it is weak.)
  • Rodgorts Invocation (BOOM!)

2. Types of prestige...etc...etc... I dont play for prestige, hence why I have over 3,000 hours, and around 700plat to my name, and no fancy titles, no mulitple sets of 15k/FoW armor, and no ranking on any of the pvp areas.

3. Pve players in pvp: I play FA and sometimes AB as my pvp. The reason I stay away from most pvp is because of the highly elitest attitude of "you like FA and dont HA or GvG or have titles, your a noob." Also, fame emote spamming is easily the most annoying thing in the entire game.

Im just a werid player though I guess.--Ryudo 21:08, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Prestige rewards

Though getting a way to wear some of the otherwise-inaccessible armor skins in PvP was good, the method via which they are obtainable is unfriendly. There's something nice about a getting a clean unlock on one's account, as though it can never be taken away no matter what happens. Even if measures would need to be taken to increase the Tournament Reward Point cost of every non-standard piece of armor, I would still pay an exorbitant price for an irreversible improvement to my wardrobe options in the form of a skin unlock. My twenty-six PvP characters would stop having to share outfits and envying my two PvE characters.

Skin unlocks for the second and third Hero Armor options would also be nice for Hero Battles. -- Dashface User Dashface.png 14:16, 10 April 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, I agree there's a barrier to PvP skins because they're "soft" unlocks (instead of account-based ones). Hypothetically speaking, if the unlock mechanics were more desirable, you'd say you find PvP skins to be a pretty heavy motivator for you? Morello 22:48, 16 April 2008 (UTC)
For sure. While I wouldn't be crazy enough to try and unlock every option out there, I would probably go for many pieces in a few classes—Monk, Elementalist, probably some Ranger and Ritualist stuff. I always hide headgear, but some of the highly-visible chest and leg armor I would unlock in a heartbeat. Necromancer Istani armor, for instance, is not prestige and not hard to acquire, but I don't think I'll ever get to use it because I don't envision ever making a PvE Necromancer. If a points system was available to make armor unlockable per piece, per gender, and with costs relative to chest/leg/other-ness and PvE obtainability, I can see myself PvPing solely for armor skins. (And working towards one of the pre-existing titles along the way would be nice.) -- Dashface User Dashface.png 12:33, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Silverleaf's answers

1) What are your favorite GW1 skills? Why?

  • Splinter Weapon for the added damage it does in HM and very nice spike graphics. Works great with all weapons or animal companions/heroes.
  • Glimmer of Light is a great healing spell no matter what you are playing.
  • Charm Animal for the Animal Companion no matter what proffession.

2) What types (new or existing) prestige rewards drive you personally as a player?

  • Now, if ever i could be able to be active in Hero's Ascent. That Phoenix Emote is Out-Of-This-World!!!
  • Have 25 title's now and the other 5 will be added too to gain top KoabD rank but ohwww my that HA emote rulez.

3) PvE players: What has drawn you into PvP in the past? What factors deter you from PvP

  • I Wanted to have the emote from HA and go fight and enjoy it. (Zaishen doesn't appeal to me at all) The very surprising use of manners or lack-of-them makes it a less-enjoyable experiance. -- Silverleaf User_talk:Silverleaf 22:03, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

DarkNecrid's answers

1) What are your favorite GW1 skills? Why?

  • Frenzy because it is a skill that gives you a great reward with a great risk, something I loved from the original Prophecies game. Plus it's the de facto Warrior skill.
  • Reversal of Fortune because it's an interesting prot. It's double interesting how it's used (to save someone so you can do something else), and how if we were perfect, RoF wouldn't be used. It's a nice unique skill!
  • Power Block because it encourages enemy casters to split their bars into multiple attributes or cancel cast or have your midline take it down when it is meta.
  • Diversion because it has the best counter of all time: the enemy team communicating.

2) What types (new or existing) prestige rewards drive you personally as a player? Prestige rewards are any reward that does not effect your power or ability. Examples would be PvP skins, titles, or rank emotes.

Not that I care that much, but unique PvP skins would be cool. Rank emotes are whatever, and titles are just kind of okay.

3) PvE players: What has drawn you into PvP in the past? What factors deter you from PvP?

Not that I'm a PvE player anymore, but what got me into PvP in the first place was the fact that in the original Guild Wars there was absolutely nothing else to do at the time because the game wasn't bogged down with titles, Hard Mode, Vanquishing, etc. So when I beat the game I did what was intended, and checked out PvP, and never looked back. Em Jae likes...

  • Fav skills are actually PvE only, I am the Strongest and Aura of Holy Might, cause I love to play my derv and see giant yellow numbers everywhere =D
Also love the resto Rit skills due to their strong heals without need for DF attribute boost like alot of Monk skills. Vengeful weapon probably my fav with health steal fast recharge combo. I love that you can protect yourself/ can't be stripped/ hurt foe all at one time :-)
  • I like the emote prestige rewards. Unfortunately I don't PvP much at all so I only have a lame silver spear zrank emote but I think they are pretty cool. Also, Titles are good!!
  • My PvP experiences are fairly limited. RA long enough to unlock TA (which I have yet to venture into). I enjoy AB from time to time. I have actually played a fair amount of FA and JQ since the Zquests drove me to check them out. I love the mad faction gain, have gone up 4 Kurzick rank in a very short time! The thing that deters me from more PvP especially RA and TA is the fact that people take it sooo very seriously and the insults that are thrown around due to that fact.

Underated's Response..

1) My favorite GW1 skills would include Spiteful Spirit, Empathy, Insidious Parasite, and Backfire for the reason that with my play style and personality I love making my enemies kill themselves. -I love dshot, theres just something about it, as with being an inturrupt that I love. -I love Atrophy, it is an innovative type of hex (when compared to other hexes especially) and it is a classic debuff- it seems like the type of things necromancers should be doing.

2)For prestige awards, I love making my characters look as cool as possible, so fancy weapons and armor are great, in general. However I most often play just to play the game, have fun, or enjoy competition.

3)I was once primarily a pve player (nearly 100% of playing) but now arguably pvp more. What drew me into pvp was the competiitve nature of the game and the look for an extra challenge, playing against intelligent foes (instead of the limited computer AI). I love the feeling of a hard earned victory. The greatest deterent for me would be the way that rank had made the heroes ascent community, in that of course people will look for ranked people to join their groups and not accept un/low ranks, thus creating a sort of a trap where it is nearly impossible for a newbie to get into HA and get better/ranked. The system makes sense in that it is often a viable way to gauge a persons skill (though sometimes and I do see that some lower ranked players play much better than some higher ranked), and it nearly seems like there is no better option, perhaps having no title (unlikely in the heavily title based modern gw) and just getting to know who plays well, throughout the community. Nonetheless, in spite of all of this, I still play HA a lot.

I'm looking forward to GW2! UnderatedTalk 14:43, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Cauldron Born's answers

1) What are your favorite GW1 skills? Why?

  • Eviscerate pre sep-14th, 2006 update; A large risk to use and a large reward if it hits. 20 seconds to charge a skill that, in ye old'n days, would almost certainly result in a kill, but if blocked you were out of luck for another 20+ seconds.
  • Incendiary Arrows pre-aug 7th, 2008 update. Lots of fun with the interrupt+burning, especially in BYOBs or 'light' forms of pvp.
  • Hidden Caltrops pre-aug 8th 2008 update. I liked this skill in this form because while it was kind of niche, you could still run effective builds with it. The first functionality change version was broken and the current is useless, in my opinion...
  • Edge of Extinction, the pre-aug 17th, 2006 update version was my favorite. The effect of EoE (especially the old version) is simply hilarious/awesome to watch, 'nough said.
  • Most skills that have reward levels appropriate to their risk of using, and skills that have odd effects (like EoE).

2) What types (new or existing) prestige rewards drive you personally as a player? Prestige rewards are any reward that does not effect your power or ability. Examples would be PvP skins, titles, or rank emotes.

  • Different armor arts I guess, which really only happens if I can't think of a better use for reward points, gold ,etc... Titles and emotes don't do anything for me.

3) PvE players: What has drawn you into PvP in the past? What factors deter you from PvP?

  • Towards PvP; Player competition and having to think. PvE becomes extremely boring once you figure out most of the AI quirks and behaviors.
  • Away from PvP; Players' attitudes, power creep, and obs mode(indirectly). The former you can't do much about, people will be people. Not going to go into the reasons on power creep since I don't feel like writing a novella. As for obs mode, the fact that you can see things like skill uses, damages, energy loss/gains, etc... has in my opinion hurt build diversity. I get bored fighting the same 2-3 builds, both team builds and individual builds, over and over in just about every match.

Pkohler01;s Responses

1) What are your favorite GW1 skills? Why?

"I Am The Srongest!" (because it's quite simply a great skill!), "Animate Bone Minions" (The more minions you have, the less likely you are to be the target of an attack, "Dragon Slash" (the adrenaline boost is exceptionally useful)

2) What types (new or existing) prestige rewards drive you personally as a player? Prestige rewards are any reward that does not effect your power or ability. Examples would be PvP skins, titles, or rank emotes.

Armor with cool/realistic skins, many of the common armor from EoTN and titles that are based on completing tasks as opposed to grind (Guardian, Protector, Carto as examples) are things that drive me personally. Starting out on a task that can be reasonably attained through progressing through the storyline alone or with friends are rewarding to me because of the reward (the cool new armor or the title to wear) and because it's not super repetitive.

3) PvE players: What has drawn you into PvP in the past? What factors deter you from PvP?

Too much structure and the cookie-cutter wiki builds are deterrent to me for PVP. By the sounds of it, World PVP plans mentioned for GW2 sound more like my speed where you have really large teams and people can come and go without dishonor or getting reported. I love how AB determines the alliance boundaries (this has often drawn me to AB) in Factions and AB is quite fun but, the maps are too repetitive, the teams too small. If the location of shrines moved and it was a 12v12 thing or more, it would be a lot more appealing. Long waits for AB are also a huge deterrent as I'm not going to wait more than 4 or 5 minutes to get into a game. I do love the split between PVE and PVP skills, too. I also don't like how PVP teams can be so exclusive or restrictive, not taking people who haven't reached a specific rank of a specific title even though I completely understand why they would be exclusionary. Greater diversity in PVP and PVP that had a purpose (as AB does in Factions) along with super large "teams" where the combat doesn't stop just because the players on one side logged out would totally appeal to me - so much so that it would tempt me to change from PVE play to PVP play. I feel that adding some chaos to PVP by making it an on-going continuous thing that blended better with PVE and had an overall (PVP and PVE)impact on the game would break the strangle-hold that a hand full of builds have on the PVP game and would attract a lot of PVE players. Add in the ability to use whatever armor skin I have unlocked on my account to my pvp toon without having to "buy" it with Balthazar faction and I'd be a happy former PVE player. With all that said, there's really nothing wrong, in my opinion, with players focusing primarily on PVE or PVP but, creating an environment where the impact of a couple of "noobs" on a team would be minimal would be fantastic in my humble opinion.
