Armor art debate

Heya, I just wanted you to know that I only added the remark about my friends/guildies comments to demonstrate that they had a strongly negative reaction to the way the pages looked when they have been out shopping for new armor. It wasn't intended as any sort of troll comment, they are not involved in the wiki editing or community, they are just viewers, and players of the game, but they know I AM involved which is why they brought their comments to me. Believe me, I know what it's like to get invested in a project here and then have someone strongly dislike it, I'm getting better at dealing with it. Again, just so you know, I think your galleries are great, I just don't like having all of them on one page..... and I do feel strongly that by eliminating in game screenshots you lose a lot of the actual feel of what the character is going to look like in the armor, the renders all tend to be rather sterile. Again Salome, nothing personal intended, by either me or my reference to my guildies comments, I think you do great work :D --Go to Wynthyst's Talk page Wynthyst 09:27, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

On another note....

I've been a practicing Wiccan for many years, with much your same outlook.--Go to Wynthyst's Talk page Wynthyst 13:45, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Arb page quote

"and the fact that I'm no longer sure that Aiiane is truly capable to put aside her dislike of people in carrying out her role as an admin, which I think raises some pretty serious questions about her position here." - Please, do elaborate. If you think that I've been deficient in my duties, I'd rather hear the details outright so that I can attempt to address them than to skirt around the issue. Go to Aiiane's Talk page (Aiiane - talk - contribs) 11:58, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Aiiane we all make mistakes and I know how annoying Kougar can be, but you saying he was "Pathetic" or even that his antics were pathetic, when that was one of the comments he made, which was cited for his ban, has just exacebated this entire situation and you must be able to see that. As it does scream double standards, he says it and its a ban, you say it and no one says anything. I don't agree with anything hes arguing but I do think that you have not been at your best on this one and your actions have just added fuel to the fire and gave his baseless claims more weight. In the time I've spent on gwonline and GWW, I have come to know you as fair and normally well considered admin, however you've handled this instance very poorly and I think it does raise some questions about your ability to cope with really 'difficult' users that you clearly have a strong dislike for. I'm assuming you dislike Kougar as Ive never seen you break your professionalism befor,e so its the only reason i can think of for you to do so now, either that or you were just having a really bad day. Although I would never argue that you are unfit for the role of being an admin, I still think that you yourself should be considering your actions in regards to kougar and asking yourself some questions about your position and if you think you can handle people like him in the future without committing some of the same supposed NPA's that they have commited and thus making the issue worse. I do not think that we as a community should be questioning you on your position here as your track record on this site is amazing but i don't think that it's wrong to state that you should be questioning yourself and deciding if you think you acted in the best interests of the wiki with your comments. Regards -- Salome User salome sig.png 12:17, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
Before I checked back and saw your response here, I wrote this. Perhaps it will help explain some of my thoughts with regards to the situation. I admit that the precise word choice was a poor one, given the circumstances (which, unfortunately, I was only aware of that particular wording of the previous comment after I had made my own remark), however I do think that the actual intended meaning was justified given the circumstances. Go to Aiiane's Talk page (Aiiane - talk - contribs) 12:35, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
I agree with you Aiine, I really do. I have read your post on the other page and I also agree with your reasoning (even though to a degree calling someones actions childish and pathetic is in essence calling the person childish and pathetic, as we are all judged by our actions). Since your message on my talk page I have sat and thought what I would have done in your situation and I could only come to the conclusion that I would have handled it terribly and flew off the handle at him, which you didn't do, So I admire you for your ability to handle the situation better than I could. However I'm not a bureaucrat and you are, thus small things you say, which would be overlooked by other users, are read into much more if you say them. I don't think what you said is an NPA and i do think what Kougar said was. However I also think that your choice of words was a bad one and has made this issue worse than it already was, but then you acknowledge that and as I said before we all make mistakes. I think that your post on the other page will be extremely helpful and needed to be said, as for the casual wiki user, reading that page, it clarifies alot of points and takes out of the debate, victimization which I think was a corner stone of his commentary. I stand by what I said both here on the other page as I think in essence I'm right but aside from that Aiiane, I would just like to say I do respect you alot as an admin, Ive been on the right and wrong side of you before on gwonline and you always showed yourself to be a fair and just individual and I hope my commentary on the other page and this one doesn't change your oppinion of me. (well unless that oppinion is that i'm a dick. jk jk jk) ;) -- Salome User salome sig.png 12:50, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

ROFL XD -- Salome User salome sig.png 13:07, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Regarding the culture poll

You are right, that one was badly placed, it looked to much like flame bait there. However, I feel that at least part of the long discussion stems from the fact that some people perceived J.Kougar's posts as NOT an NPA offense, while some others perceived both his and Aiiane's actions as NPA offenses. I want to go out of this whole situation with a clear "don't use pathetic while refering to someone" or "it is ok to use pathetic". NPA one of the most frequently cited policies around here, but has always been very lightly defined. People having different interpretations of NPA can lead to exactly the accusations of double standards we saw. --Xeeron 16:14, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Indeed Xeeron and i wasn't questioning the validity of the poll, just its placement. I think also for fairness sake perhaps you should also ask if people consider calling someone pathetic and calling someones actions pathetic are one and the same, just for balance. -- Salome User salome sig.png 16:57, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Kougar's page

It may be a good idea to just withdraw now. The case has been accepted already, and Kougar has admited that he screwed things up. Further antagonizing him is not helpful at this point.--Fighterdoken 18:48, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

agreed. I think its wise for all of us to do that. if the case has been accepted, then our work is done. --User Wandering Traveler Oie User Wandering Traveler Sig2.png Wandering Traveler 18:50, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
But he hasn't accepted he's wrong and his avoidance of my post, which IMHO completely shot down his arguments, shows that. He's apologizing for his abuse of the ban but still hes adamant that bullying another user was completely valid and the reason he gives for the resolution of his problems with this user isn't that he was mature and worked out his issues or that he was even sorry and wouldn't want to repeat them again, no simply its the fact that Gaile's leaving. So what happens if he doesn't like the way Regina (The new CRM) handles things in the future? We'll be right back here again. He isn't anywhere close to sorry and you both know it. -- Salome User salome sig.png 18:53, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
Either way, that is his way of thinking and you are not going to change it with a mere talk-page dialogue. For now, we must limit ourselves to Arbcomm. Whatever happens "IF" he does something in the future will be dealt with when it happends, same as it would for Raptors, Readem, Liche, Eloc, me, or anyone else.--Fighterdoken 18:57, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
lets just leave it to the bcrats right now. I think we've put in enough of our opinions, and putting more in I think would just aggrevate him further. lets leave it now to the people that make the decisions. hopefully they make the right one..... --User Wandering Traveler Oie User Wandering Traveler Sig2.png Wandering Traveler 18:58, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
Fair enough I'll step back for now. *grumbles about people not answering kick arse posts which completely scuppers the person arguments* ;) -- Salome User salome sig.png 19:01, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
Lol, I know how you feel mate. I'd love to be in there continuing in the discussion at the moment. but don't worry. Who, shadowsin? he got mad because of the whole Mgrinshpon discussion and went after me for asking to remove the "explicit story". nothing major. --User Wandering Traveler Oie User Wandering Traveler Sig2.png Wandering Traveler 21:39, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
No, Kougar. All I see is NPA violation (barely) and circumventing a ban. CA has done this at least 2x and hes still around, so if Kougar gets permaban its going to be extremely unfair.--Ryudo 21:44, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
LOL, okay guys and lets step away from Kougar. I'm not being a care bear just not wanting to move the the e-drama to my talk page. Lets talk about something we all enjoy, porn. Porn = good. ;) -- Salome User salome sig.png 21:56, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
EDIT: not cow porn though, as me ryudo discussed and agreed earlier. :) oh and Ryudo, I agree, Escaflowne was crap but ive always been more a fantasy anime person than a sci-fi one although appleseed was okay-ish I suppose. I quite liked last flight of the phoenix, which was done to go along with the matrix. I'm also probably the only peep who didnt like Akira, but i'll continue this convo on your talk page later when im not being pestered by my boyf to get off this thing. -- Salome User salome sig.png 21:58, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
Erh, Ryudo can't exactly answer for a while. In any case, if you like fantasy you may want to look in youtube for The tower of Druagar (i may be failing on spelling).--Fighterdoken 22:01, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
Ryudo asked me to say to talk to him in game, since he got banned.
.....are you feeling all right, Salome? --User Wandering Traveler Oie User Wandering Traveler Sig2.png Wandering Traveler 22:53, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
Sorry its a reference to Ryudo's talk page, just something we were talking about earlier, but yeh I'm fine thank Traveler. And as for Ryudo, what did he get banned for? I checked his edits and couldnt find anything. -- Salome User salome sig.png 23:47, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Copy-and-paste job?

Woah, woah, woah. Japanese is most definitely not a "copy-and-paste" job from China. The characters, yes, they borrowed them for their own writing system (albeit, even that is disputed), but the syntax is completely different. (Remember, English also borrowed its writing system, which was borrowed from the Romans, which they borrowed from the Phoenicians, which was ultimately borrowed from the Egyptians.) Their cultures (Japanese and Chinese) are also very, very different. And yes, English is a Germanic language, but go back far enough and they all (French, Spanish, Latin, even Arabic) come from proto-Indo-European. So, please don't go throwing about cultural stereotypes, as it's very rude. Kokuou 06:26, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

All language is growth and all language borrows from its neighbors and predecessors. I was being glib about Japanese and for that I apologise. The root of the Japanese language is the Chinese language system. I think any unbiased historian would tell you the same on that one and would tell you that Japan has been heavily influenced by China throughout the ages. I'm not saying this is a bad thing though, the English language as you said is a mish-mash of loads of other languages and influences as is English culture. It's not an insult for a culture to be heavily influenced by another culture, just a simple fact of living in the world, IMHO I actually think it's a good thing. Diversity = FTW IMHO. -- Salome User salome sig.png 12:55, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
English isn't really english anymore. It's stolen from so many different things. Anything that is original is probably something stupid like the word "is." And even that might be wrong.- VanguardUser-VanguardAvatar.PNG
Actually, speaking as a linguist myself, Japanese is a language isolate. That means that linguists aren't sure where it came from or what other languages it's related to. Korean is similar, but some linguists also believe that it may be related to Finnish. Don't get me wrong, Japan has had its influence from China in the past couple hundreds of years, but Japanese was a full-fledged language before even having contact with China, and this original form of the Japanese language (called "Yamato-kotoba") is likely completely unrelated to Chinese. As for english, I'm afraid Vanguard that even 'is' is not originally English. As you say, most English words (estimates run from 80% to 85%) are borrowed from other languages. The only words we haven't borrowed are words like "cow" and "pig"; that is, words relevant to the lifestyles of our English speaking ancestors in the United Kingdom before the Norman conquest. In fact, English is probably one of the biggest "borrowers" of words in the entire world. Kokuou 18:47, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
Yup English is just a huge hodgepodge of languages, however I think that's why I enjoy it so much, it's diversity is what makes it such an interesting language. I will admit my knowledge of Japanese is gleaned from my cousin who's a linguist and translator in Mandarin, Chinese, Japanese and some European languages, so you would be better to talk to him about it, as my knowledge of the language is limited to my discussions with him. My interest in the east has always been more focused upon their cultural history than the etymology of their language. :) -- Salome User salome sig.png 21:53, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
Ah, I see. I do admit that there are very similar things culturally, but they are very distinct for the most part. You mentioned that your cousin was a translator in Japanese on another page; I'm actually a Japanese>English translator myself (which probably gives me more time for playing GW than I should o_O). I do know some Mandarin, though not enough to translate it into either Japanese or English. Does your cousin play GW, too? Kokuou 22:02, 17 April 2008 (UTC)
Yeh he does play GW, or at least he used to til about 6 months ago when he got a new job in Tokyo, teaching loads of Japanese businessmen how to speak English. It apparently eats into his day alot, but he enjoys it, however i havent seen him online in a couple of months now and the only way i catch him these days is by phoning him. *grumbles about Sean's busy lifestyle* -- Salome User salome sig.png 08:37, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi, Salome. I was working on the User talk:Gaile Gray/Support Issues page this weekend when I noticed you'd commented about a drawback that you perceived with the /report system. Yup I do, I just find it annoying that after all the peeps who got upset, nothing was learned. *frustrated* I think that's one of the things I don't like about the internet. In RL, my job gives me complete control, when I have an opinion on something people have to take it into consideration and when something is judged the person has to abide by it and go on from there; however on the net, regardless of how sound the logic or what the judgement is, people can just ignore it, if it doesn't fit in with what they want it to, regardless of how logically twisted that is. It's SO annoying. -- Salome User salome sig.png 17:26, 25 April 2008 (UTC)

Trolling PvX is a permaban now, because we (the admins) got fed up with it. We haven't actually had to enforce that yet, so it appears to be working. Also, Napalm hardly qualifies as a "PvX friend". He's kinda been permabanned since January, with a short period in March when we gave him a second chance. ¬ Wizårdbõÿ777(talk) 23:25, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

By PvX friend, i didn't mean friend of PvX, I meant a friend of Ska's from PvX. Have to admit I haven't been on PvX for awhile, the constant insults and "we're leet, your not" attitude, just annoyed me greatly. -- Salome User salome sig.png 08:34, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
Yeah, no kidding. It was nearly impossible to focus on building builds with all the "omg u fial, lolol u sux @ gaem" going around. For a while, the elitists were at least still elite; but when all the scrubs started copying their behavior, there was no point in continuing to tolerate it. -Auron 08:37, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
Yup, Auron. I didn't mind it as much when those who were really good players were being arsey about builds, as at least they had a point, but when the numpty Wammos who didn't know their arse from their elbow started giving retarded advice and bitching at how much you "fial" if you pointed out the flaws in that advice, I just couldn't be bothered much anymore. Hopefully the new policy will get PvX back to what it used to be, as it used to be a great site. -- Salome User salome sig.png 08:43, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

Regina's talk page

"Why aren't you banned yet?" isn't really the most drama avoiding comment I've seen. If you have a problem with a user, bring it up on their talk page or at the noticeboard. Regina's (or anyone else's) talk page is definitely the wrong place. - anja talk 11:34, 31 May 2008 (UTC)
