I think this is a good idea, but I don't think ANet is ever going to consider it for GW1. (Fortunately, aspects of this appear in GW2.)

Game generated spam filters[edit]

Filter and/or combine current game generated chatter so that it doesn't distract from gameplay.

Primary in-game spam and cheap solutions to reduce it[edit]

Chatter Issue Proposed cheap solution
Modification of PvP skills Large # of split skills + seven heroes can create up to 64 lines of text. Replace with, Your characters now use appropriate PvP skills; please review your builds before entering a match.
Player has gained a skill point Frequent message (especially in EB or GToB); of little interest. Stop announcing skill point increases after characters reach Level 20 if the character has more than 10 skill points in reserve.
In-game dialogue delivered to team channel Distracts the team from being able to communicate. Direct in-game dialogue to the local chat. New players will turn local on, while veterans will tend to keep it off during missions.
PvP Player achievements PvE players have little interest (except for the rare amusing team name). Deliver PvP achievements to players within PvP outposts or turn them off altogether.
PvE Player achievements PvP players have little interest. Only deliver PvE achievements to PvE outposts and zones (plus guild halls) This particular suggestion is probably not as cheap as those above.
Item drops Large # of drops forces team chat off the screen Additional toggle to filter in/out drops

Fancy solution for reducing game-generated spam[edit]

In a game this popular, there are always some players who are interested in all possible information. They might choose to see this type of information. Accordingly, a new chat filter can be added to Game options that would run in parallel to the profanity filter. The choices would be:

Filter option Affect/Effect
All game messages No filters applied
Local messages only Filters out all achievements; allows all dialogues
Global messages only Filters out mission dialogues; allows all achievements
PvP messages only Filters out any PvE messages; allows any PvP messages
PvE messages only Filters out any PvP messages; allows any PvE messages
No game messages Filters out achievements, mission dialogue, etc
