Excellent suggestion and well thought-out and written.

Within the context of how GW2 is shaping up, I think it fits perfectly and would be a welcome addition. But I would like to see it go one further. I would like to see an end to linear, pre-ordained character history / backstory.

Yes, in GW2 we're being given more options. But those options are still constrained to a specific storyline. We will be given choices and those choices will change a few of the dynamic events we encounter but - in the end - it's still, "We're all the "good" guys fighting against the common enemy of the internal "evil" factions within our own race and the external "evil" of the dragons!" The small particulars of whether you grew up on the streets or descended from royalty are pretty irrelevant since - in the end - we're all fighting the same fight and following the same story (with only minor twists and turns that don't affect the final super-goal of fighting the dragons in any significant way).

What if the players themselves were permitted to choose sides and have that be part of the game? What if a Norn player was permitted to side with the Sons of Svanir, a Charr with the Flame Legion, etc.? How about areas of the map coming under control of the various factions based on their success in defeating members of an opposing faction? What if the outcome of dynamic events would have an impact on these boundaries? Instead of being actors on a stage merely reciting the lines to a pre-ordained conclusion written by the invisible game developer behind the scenes, what if the storyline as a whole was dynamic and dependent on the actions of the players themselves? What if the "bad guys" actually won (at least temporarily until the "good guys" rally)? A constant ebb-and-flow of interaction and evolving storyline who's outcome is unknown.

As it stands now, the game will be fantastic, I will spend far too many hours playing it, and I will enjoy the time I spend playing it. But there will still be that little nagging feeling of, "Gee, I wish I could really choose my own path for once rather than being forcibly led down a specific path to a specific conclusion (the defeat of the dragons)." But I guess that will have to wait until... Guild Wars 3 perhaps 01:39, 12 May 2011 (UTC)

well, GW3, that just dooesn't seem to be something Anet wants to do from what I've read. For good or ill, we (the players) are meant to be the heroes. As to the suggestion; I like it. I like having as many plausable options as you can fit into the personal story.--Will Greyhawk 01:52, 15 May 2011 (UTC)
I understand the idea may be impractical and is unlikely to be implemented, but I think I made a reasonable argument for its implementation and GW2 does not have a release date. I thought of it while arguing with those who don't like how religious the humans are. I had to agree that on some level our characters should be allowed to diverge from societal norms, but there had to be an equivalent opportunity for all races, so I suggested this.--Shai Halud 20:57, 16 May 2011 (UTC)
Interesting. Gotta say, Shai, those are arguments I don't touch with a ten mile pole.--Will Greyhawk 07:23, 23 May 2011 (UTC)
