File talk:Guild arch heretics comm icon.PNG

From Guild Wars Wiki
Jump to navigationJump to search

It is a public-use generic clip art of a headset used to associate the manner in which players on this team communicate during gameplay. There is nothing whatsoever indicating a copyright, trademark, or any other liscensing restriction on the page or the image itself. Nor was there any instruction on the page in question indicating I could (or even should) request permissio to use. It was chosen as a more accurate version of a communication-icon than the microphone image some other guilds have used in relation to Ventrillo.

I can easily upload a photo of my own headset but that does have the Razer logo on it and I figured that would be more of a problem for GWW.

I have removed the image form the page and request the page not be deleted. I would appreciate some clarification between my generic headset and the generic microphone currenlty in use. I further reuqest I be allowed to re-post this headset image.

In addition, the prvious image of the american flag icon used to indicate our territory was also not copyrighted. I am not sure how to convey this fact via the image upload process. Please advise.

Well, first, the issue with this particular upload is that it uses the .PNG extension instead of .png. I know it's nothing much, but the GWW:IMAGE policy states that we stick to lower-case extensions. As for the image itself, it originally comes from http://www.speedlink.com/?p=2&cat=183&pid=18675&paus=1, which clearly states "© 2011 Jöllenbeck GmbH" at the bottom of the page. Since it is an image of one of their products, they own the copyright to it.
Even if they didn't specifically copyright that image, according to GWW:COPYRIGHT, this wiki only allows content that is released under public domain, GNU, GFDL, or copyrighted material owned by ArenaNet. I hate the rule myself, but there it is, sorry.
As for uploading your own, yes the image itself would be your own "work" as they call it, but it does contain copyrighted material (e.g. the design and logo made by Razer), so probably wouldn't be allowed either. The image currently used (this one) is public domain and that's why it's still here. One thing you could try is to look on Wikipedia for a headset image (here maybe?) that has a public domain or GNU tag on it. ~FarloUser Farlo Triad.pngTalk 21:24, 18 August 2011 (UTC)
