A Linking Memory[edit]

A young girl with short, white hair walks towards the main building of the temple, her pace quickened as she heard footsteps behind her. She knew them, she knew who it was. A dark haired boy, only a bit older than her, quickly grabs the collar of her shirt and throws her onto the ground.

“Hey undead,” He says coldly, “Only those who worship the Goddess are allowed in the temple, no coward of Grenth’s is allowed near here.” His name, Kenji Shiroi and her name, Katherine Zoltin. Her eyes look deathly afraid into his; she knew him as one of the strongest young monklings of Serenity Temple, yet she also knew him as a pure bully at heart. This was it, the older monks wouldn’t care if she was hit by him, they’d probably let her bleed. They didn’t say their opinions on her, but she knew most at the temple reguarded her as a freak. Her eyes looked back, back into the eyes of Kenji’s little sister, Mariko. Such a sweet girl, maybe if Katherine was born a monk, they would have been friends. Those were only dreams now to seven year old Katherine…dreams she feared she would dream no more.

Then a shadow blocked the first punch of Kenji’s. Katherine looks up, seeing a boy a few years older than her smirking at her, his red hair shining with the sunlight. She had rarely seen him before, but she knew he was always nice to her when he could be.

"Kenji,” he said “Don’t you know that hitting girls is never a good idea.”

“Garet, stay out of this. Go back to your conjuring, Dwanya has no place for another goddess.”

“Hah, you really expect me to think that Dwanya only accepts people that you like?”

Kenji glares at him, pulling out his wand and Garet grabs his cane. Katherine watches as the two of them fight each other for a bit, then tries to sneak away. She crawls off towards a corner until Mariko spots her.

“No way,” Mariko says, running towards Katherine, pointing her wand at Katherine, “Bane Signet!”

Katherine falls over weakly, those smiting spells always hurt her the worst compared to anything. Garet looks up in horror and rage, seeming to lose himself into it, glaring darkly at Kenji as a gust of wind appears out of no where. A purple light forms around Kenji, almost encasing him as Katherine and Mariko watch helplessly in horror.

Then, with a small popping noise, Kenji vanishes. Garet falls over, passing out into the dirt as the dust clears. His brother, Edos, who had been watching the whole fight runs towards Garet, trying to shake him awake. Edos calls the monks over, asking for help. Katherine stumbles, trying to stand up as Mariko looks at Garet in stunned silence. Katherine looks at Garet for a moment, then flees home, with a final look at Mariko, knowing the lives of both of them are now changed forever.

Letting Go[edit]

Mariko Shiroi stares into the water watching as the sea on the shore crash and return into itself. Her brown hair undone from its layered bun, it reaching to her shoulders as she stares into the sea mindlessly. She ran into an old foe of hers, Katherine Zoltin. She caused her brother’s death; Mariko knew that Katherine did.

“If she didn’t exist,” Mariko says, “my brother would. He would be here…I wouldn’t be alone anymore.”

She plays with the soft sand watching it as it flows into her fingers. She wants to believe it is true, but things like life are never simple as the necromancer is evil and the monk is good. Mariko saw her brother die so long ago; he would have killed Katherine if he had the chance. Now, Katherine dared to ask Mariko if she would join her guild. Did Katherine forget what happened? No, that would be too easy for her. If that day had traumatized Katherine as much as it did Mariko no way would it have been forgotten like the wind.

Mariko sighs softly, falling into the sand with her hair flowing every way. Things were never simple and Mariko knows one day she has to let this go but it is so much easier to hate than to love Katherine. Katherine is the reason she survived in the temple, but also the reason why she was destroyed in the temple. To love Katherine and hate her; it is Mariko’s only option. Katherine has now given her a home, but it is only half a home. She could not consider it a home, but then again she has never had a home. The temple is not home, Ascalon is not home, but she does have one home. One home she is too afraid to go to. Cantha, there her home lives.

“Cantha,” Mariko says, “My parents had to leave our home, without me being able to say goodbye. The pirates chased us away, and now I can’t go back. The pirates will kill me if I do.”

Tears streak down Mariko’s face, her memories bringing back pain she did not wish upon herself. She remembers everything; her parents telling her to hide her Canthan heritage, her first days with the monklings, her brother becoming a bully, and the most painfully one of all, her brother’s death. That destroyed her. Mariko lifts her hands in front of her, staring at them.

“These hands were supposed to heal,” She whispers, “How much pain have they caused instead?”

She stands up, dusting the sand off her gold laced clothes and looking out into main area of Fisherman’s cove. Such a beautiful place, was Katherine’s Guild Hall like this? She puts up her hair into her multi tiered buns and wipes the tears from her face. It is time to let go; let go of all these memories that haunt her. Mariko picks up her staff and makes her way back towards Lion’s Arch. The gentle monk, corrupted by the pain received from too much loss, can only relearn to love a bit, but that bit is better than the heartlessness she has felt.

Very nice stories Kathy. There are issues here and there with depth and tone - well in my opinion - but they are still very nice! I'm wanting to read more. :) -- Konig Des Todes 06:59, 9 January 2009 (UTC)
