Skill Factor[edit]

I was just in an RA match of epic proportions (not really bcs RA isn't that epic but I'm trying to set a mood). It was Me running my version of a Sin Spike bar (yes using the bar is not very skillful but the timing for success can require a lot of awareness + its better than running PS).

My Team was me, a Me/E Ice Mes, a Me/A Deadly Mes, and some random Warrior who at least knew how to target a monk. We ran into a Mo/X PnH Heal, a Rt/Mo Resto Xinrae + Spirits, a N/Me Lich MM, and a Me/E Ice Mes. It was the priest map and we had no heals so they feel big and cross the bridge, normally fail but we have no heals. I burn my spike on the Rt bcs I see my people are targeting the monk. The rit doesn't die bcs the mes was anticipating me and blinded me after Mantis. I chilled among the minions and used the mantis part of my chain to crip the monk and deal some damage. Then I ran away to my priest to get a small heal while one of my mesmers died. I returned and had to chill for a bit out of spell range bcs I was immediately blinded by the mesmer upon my return to battle. Our mesmer was rezed I went around the other team and killed their priest bcs they did the fail strategy of crossing the bridge and forgetting about him.

During that process two more people died but they are both rezed I found that the warrior had a hard rez and used it without difficulty. The Lich necro pulled back slightly to cast his last two Aura of the Lich's before his minion armor would be maxed. I saw that the monk pushed ahead to heal the mesmer who decided it would be a good idea to take out our priest bcs he was providing minor heals. I took this opportunity to focus on the necro. I waited until the after cast of his first Lich to spike and killed him while as his queued second lich finished casting. He must have had his 40/40 set out bcs he died 1 auto attack after my chain, I didn't hang around to see. I took advantage of having a swarm of minions following me by leading them straight to monk who was quickly swarmed and couldn't move away from them. He cast guardian on himself so I waited until I had my chance. I guessed when guardian ended bcs he was casting PnH on himself to get rid of some poison and spiked during an aftercast. He didn't die the rit healed him, but he was still stuck.

I ran to my priest for another heal bcs the minions bashed on me too for a bit during my spike. The mesmer who was busy annoying the warrior rezed the necro who retook his minions. I quickly spiked him to make them neutral again, I guess the monk was feeling selfish and the rit was casting a spirit. The minions scattered and attacked mostly our opposing team. The rit fell while I was stabbing the monk in the back with my minor chain. They pulled back to regroup. Just 1 rez they could make and it was on the rit. The warrior made a rez while this happened as did I at some point bcs our ppl died. We took down the rit while it was low on energy and to make sure it couldn't rez if it had one. Then we brought down the other two with the minions help, not that it was needed just handy.
Basically what I'm trying to say with this recollection is that you can see how player skill can effect the outcome of a match. It's noticeable at several points.
  • Positioning Advantage - The other team willing had forgone that. 1) I killed their priest 2) They attacked where we could get minor healing + very minor dmg. 3)They did unfavorable splits which resulted in the death of a party member. 4)We stayed out of harms way to gain some health regen when possible.
  • Timing Advantage - Taking advantage between casts.
  • Misc Advantage - We took advantage of the neutral minions which was awesome support.
The game just isn't about this stuff anymore. It supports mindlessly spamming skills, passive play styles, and overpowering instead of out thinking. Just look at the RA match described the warrior was never a priority and he managed to pull off 6 second rez skills. The mesmer could have meteored to stop him but no. PvP needs a reboot, put skill and teamwork back at the header of the game instead of Build Wars.
