After reading this post from Stephane Lo Presti, I think it's time to unlock this in-game exclusive that "conveys tangible benefits" for players who didn't attend the 4th Anniversary celebration. Based on this quote, SLP would probably agree, at least in principle:
- "A hat is an item that is bound to your character, and the prestige associated relies on standing in an outpost and hoping that someone notices your character. I feel more comfortable offering up items like these than I do offering exclusives that convey tangible benefits, or undermine the spirit in which they were given." (emphasis added)
Unlike festival hats, an extra storage pane unquestionably "conveys tangible benefits," yet exactly like festival hats, this particular item is locked solely to players who were present for the associated event. Here are three different unlock ideas:
- The "Work for it" option: Add a cross-campaign "Xunlai panel unlock quest" that requires a Level 20 character and all 4 games: Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall and Eye of the North. The quest could be given by one of the named Xunlai Agents (Honlo, Jueh or Momo), and work sort of like the process for getting a Black Moa Chick or completing Thackeray's scavenger hunt. I have outlined this quest in this suggestion.
- The "4th birthday" option: When any character on a player's active account reaches its 4th birthday, the panel is automatically unlocked for free. This panel was free of cost to begin with, and this (sort-of) maintains the 4th Anniversary "spirit in which it was given." It just shifts the meaning of the word "anniversary" from the game itself to the player's account instead.
- The "Buy it" option: Make it purchasable through the in-game store like other storage panels.
Of these, obviously I'd most like to see the cross-campaign quest option. It would be a fun way to unlock this panel and it would actively require player participation without being tied to any date-specific event. The birthday option would probably be hard to do, but it would be more or less in the spirit of the original. The purchase option is absolutely my least favorite, but it has to be listed because it would probably be the easiest method from a programming perspective, and it would at least get the job done.
