Something is rotten in the state of Maishang[edit]

I never really understood the anomaly that said "Even though you have brought 1..3 recruits to her, when asked, Lysandra will still comment to you about 4 recruits." I think it may be related to today's experience:

Seems if recruits die, new ones join, some die, new ones join, the counter gets out of sync. Quest updated to return to Lysandra at 3 recruits. There were more available recruits, but none were willing to join. Recruiter Lysandra also did not regard the quest as complete as as I only brought 3 recruits.

Only missed out on 400 Luxon points, but still annoying. 66.170.212.17 17:48, 27 February 2011 (UTC)

Easy repeatable solo run[edit]

This can be run by any profession solo, as it can be done without fighting (or just fighting 1 popup) 99% of the time. The solo non-fighting path requires you pick up these recruits in order, 1) mesmer, 2) necro, 3) ritualist, 4) monk. As mentioned in the main article, the recruits move very slowly, so you must, I repeat must, pick up the farthest recruit (mesmer) first, next farthest (necro) next, and so on. In any other recruitment order you waste *a lot* more time and risk fighting which would, on a solo run, force a restart of the mission.

Since you are running to the farthest recruit first, the mesmer, run straight down the path from the quest npc. Various groups trigger and begin moving nearby but there's plenty of room to avoid them. Just watch your aggro circle. You'll pass the ritualist recruit, just ignore him for now. The only tricky place is near the ele' boss Seacrash. As you approach, the environment walls around the path narrow, and up ahead is the 'sin boss, Ssaresh. Hug the wall to your right (west), veering off the path. As you begin hugging the wall, approaching Ssaresh, his group will begin moving toward Seacrash. Stop along the wall when Ssaresh begins moving. Allow Ssaresh's group to pass near you but out of aggro range on their way to fight Seacrash. The 'sin and ele' bosses will usually fight, and you will get the morale boost, - and elite if you brought a capture sigil.

Continue closely along the wall toward the necro and mesmer recruits. Use the circular path of the environment wall near the bridge to bypass the rot wallows there. If run continuously, the timing is usually perfect for a nearly non-stop path to the mesmer. But if you're doing this the first time and stop and start while getting your bearings, or stop to watch the fight between Seacrash and Ssaresh, your timing may be off and you may have to wait at the bridge for a group of Nagas patrolling nearby to move back out of range before continuing past the Necro. As with the Ritualist recruit, ignore the Necro recruit standing near the bridge, for now. Continue up the path not patrolled by the Nagas and grab the first recruit, the Mesmer.

Return the way you came, more or less exactly, but begin grabbing the recruits you passed on the way up. Because they walk very slowly, your timing on the return is trickier, and you may have to wait for various groups to move out of the way. Wait on the bridge, for example, for the rot wallows to move to a point where you can run around them in the circular area they patrol around. You will need to start with all recruits at your side since if they start out farther behind, they will only get farther behind and likely aggro something. Stay along the wall all the way back to the Ritualist, and recruit him.

The only tricky area left is the compound where the monk recruit is. For the unenlightened, this is a trap. But if you know the secret triggers, you can actually recruit the monk without any ambush or pop-up, making this a completely no-fight run.

Here's the secret:

(1) if you venture to the left (to the south, away from the monk and collector side), you will always trigger the appearance of 3 pop-up combatants,

(2) if you hug the right side (to the north, where the monk and collector stand waiting), you will trigger 1 pop-up combatant (a kursick warrior, ranger, or assassin),

(3) if you go straight down the middle of the compound to the far wall, hug the far wall as you move toward the monk, then you will trigger nothing at all. But you also then have to return the same way, carefully, since you have 4 recruits now that may randomly path into a trigger zone.

Because of the trickier pathing going straight down the middle, I usually just opt to intentionally trigger the single pop-up (right, or north, side). Just bring a heal spell and a good offensive spell to take down the single pop-up. The 4 recruits usually have enough hit points to survive the moment, and they even help a little taking down the lone bad guy. Don't rely on them to do much though, as you will have to do most of the work. One of them may need some healing also, depending on how slowly you take down the one pop-up. Once you take care of the pop-up, returning to the main path is not hard at all, as you just have to avoid the southern part of the compound now, not both southern and northern parts.

Once you leave the monk's compound, if you go straight up the path back to the quest-giving NPC, along the shortest possible path, then you will encounter no more pop-ups. There are a couple ambushes near the quest-giving NPC, most notably one near the entrance of the outpost, but if you follow my advice and go straight back along a minimal path rather than wander around, then you can easily finish.

Note: I think this repeatable quest was made to be an easy solo, likely because before Factions was released it was noted that the standard Luxon quests didn't have sufficient points to directly finish off the 'Friend of the Luxons (?)' faction requirement, so you had to gain more Luxon faction points by other means, such as doing the repeatable Luxon quests over and over.
