I hope this is an answerable question

My question is simple...I am only asking this because some of us just need a small glimmer of hope for learning about new stuff. :)

Regina, should we be excited about what will be shared at PAX regarding either upcoming stuff for GW or new info on GW2?

I understand NDAs, but a simple yes or no would satisfy many of us and help us to look forward to what we may learn from the team at PAX. I also understand info is kept "need to know" until the last minute due to possible glitches, bugs, scheduling issues, etc. I hope a yes or no about excitement doesn't get ruled by the NDA.:) I fully believe you guys are working hard, so I hope everyone gets some mental refreshment from PAX. Thanks, even if the answer is "I cannot say at this time."--Thorfinnr 17:13, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

we dont like surprises

Any comment about the Guild Wars 2 trailer that will be shown off at gamescom next week? --77.97.23.248 21:06, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

You may not like surprises, but I can assure you a lot of the rest of us do. I'm sure they will release it on the website, as soon as they have any comment about it. Asking for it before hand is just silly. -- Wyn User Wynthyst sig icon2.png talk 21:08, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
A lot of games change Dramatically after their "Alpha" trailers come out before they even reach their Betas, which has been especially true for NCsoft's games over the years. Even if this Trailer included actual Combat sequences, why would it matter if the physics, gameplay mechanics, or classes involved won't look anything like that when the game actually goes live? (in 2 to 3 years, lol). IoW: Y so Srprizzd?? --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 21:40, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
I'm going to take a different position on this by stating that I love things like early trailers and the such because it's fun to look back at them years later after you've mastered the game the trailer was for. As for when such things are released, I really don't care but I hope there's a lot of stuff like that for us all to look back at. 192.155.58.44 22:27, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
Could somebody please direct me of a source where it is stated that there will be a trailer release next week? I'm not questioning whether there will be a trailer, its just that I had no idea and hadn't heard of this till reading the above post on this very page. Thanks!- UnderatedTalk 02:26, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
The guy just ASKED if there will be one, there's no announcement or even a rumor that there actually might be one. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 12:37, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, just got kind of confused when he said "will be shown". From what I read, he didn't ask if there would be one, but for a comment or information on the one he said "will be shown". -UnderatedTalk 16:28, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
Heh, now that you put it that way, he does make it sound like there will be one, but I don't think anyone at Anet has mentioned this, especially considering the entire GW community isn't going haywire (they would, too, if they heard something like this). Anet wouldn't blow that kind of surprise if they did in fact plan to show something, especially with all their uber secrecy about everything lately. User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 16:54, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
This is where the rumors start. — Jon User Jon Lupen Sig Image.png Lupen 17:01, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
If they were going to do a new trailer I would think they would do it at something like E3 and combine a big article in one of the mags, not just slip it into gamescom. I don't know, the way I see it the next time we hear anything about GW2 it will be a big huge marketing thing with lots of new info and a release date (or at least an official estimate on release, like 1Q 2010 or something like that). That seems to be how most companies do it anyway. (Satanael 17:08, 12 August 2009 (UTC))
I would agree. Trying to officially open up marketing for GW2 with a trailer right now would be in direct conflict with Aion, as well as some other big releases coming up this fall. Even though it wouldn't be competition for actual players, since GW2 is still quite a ways away, it would be in competition for attention and would get lost between all the other "big news" of the game world. Apparently that's part of the reason why so many publishers are choosing to push their releases from the planned Fall season into 2010 instead (Bayonetta and StarCraft are among those I think, some other games I can't think of). User Rose Of Kali SIG.jpgRose Of Kali 17:19, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

A subject of concern

sorry to bother but, if we upgrade our GW1 accounts to GW2 can we keep our original chars and play them in GW1? --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 216.249.69.175 (talk).

wow I'm sorry I re-read my answer and realised I was vague... from previous conversation your characters arnt directly a part of Guildwars2... names are somewhat reserved and the Hall of Monuments in EOTN plays some part to connect your new character with thier long dead family/past MrPaladin talk 19:42, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
actually I was wondering if we still get to play guild wars one if we upgrade our accounts to guild wars 2 --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 216.249.69.175 (talk).
You'll be making a new account. There's been no indication that they will shut down the GW1 servers when GW2 arrives. Please sign your comments.-- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 20:08, 21 August 2009 (UTC)
I mean; what if we don't want to create a new account, can we just add Guild Wars 2 to our campaign roster? like if I have prophecies and I buy nightfall; I don't lose the other game, I just get extra character slots and can create characters for that campaign but I don't lose access to the old content (I know that we can't access guild wars 2 with old chars but will we lose them if we attach guild wars 2 to our old accounts?) --The preceding unsigned comment was added by 216.249.69.175 (talk).
No, it's a new game. You can link multiple game accounts to a master ncsoft account now, but that doesn't mean that you lose either one. -- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 00:17, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
In the IP's defense, linking anything to a master NCSoft account costs you the option of changing your e-mail, so anything's possible. While I don't consider a response from ArenaNet necessary here, I wouldn't say your response is likely to convince anyone - no offense. User A F K When Needed Signature Icon.jpg A F K When Needed 00:20, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
Pretty sure it's been stated that you'll be able to continue adding to your HOM even once GW2 is out. You wouldn't be able to do that if it hijacked your account and sacked your characters. Besides, what the IP is talking about won't be happening, it's going to be a different client altogether. -- FreedomBoundUser Freedom Bound Sig.png 00:25, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

I must admit that is quite stupid giving something for one when when purchasing another. I don't have time for two games, If any is acquirable for this game, it should be acquirable by purchasing something related to this game only. So unless you add a way to send my characters in any way to Aion like will be partially able to do with GW2, that is something I won't touch. MithUser MithranArkanere Star.pngTalk 18:26, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
Along with other arguments against this made (people who've already bought the CE for Aion to play beta don't get this promo!!) the idea of someone getting a special collectors edition of Aion and paying a monthly fee to play it and still playing gw a decent ammount of time is lol worthy. Sort of. UnderatedTalk 18:34, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
So... Don't do it? It's not like typing /Aion is going to make you fly over a mob or enable you to drop on a monk's head and cause the dazed condition. It's an interesting cross-promotional effort, nothing more. If they allowed you to just carry them with you all the time, it might be neat enough to bother with. As it is, it looks like I could make this available to anyone using TexMod and the Paragon wing emotes. Could be wrong, of course, but unless somebody says something else I'll assume it's just a recycled model, with a new animation & texture. --Jette User Jette awesome.png 19:09, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
As it wasn't NCsoft which programmed/modeled/etc. it's in the ANet category --Boro 10px‎ 19:51, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
(Edit conflict) Considering how similar the two games look, it's likely they were modeled by Aion's team only. You CAN import and export reference models, animations, and coding you know... Meanwhile, a more successful Aion release also means a bigger flashier marketing release for GW2 years from now so you could say even GW1's staff has a vicarious interest in this. PS, I really hope Jette's just trolling rite nao --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 21:03, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

Or aion is angry on the gw2 trailer release and want to still sell boxes, or ncsoft hopes to get more sells because gw1 players will say I want them and aion players will say lets try gw1. But my opinion is that this is just a other kind of cocacola advertisment in a race game. But instead of that this is a pair of wings in a other mmorpg to advertice a other mmorpg. And this as nothing to do with the lore in gw2 or so. And it will not come back because they already sayed we cant fly in gw2. Death Sligher 80.122.215.118 23:09, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

(Reset indent) The thing that I find interesting is how tacky it looks. You'd think (whether this is Arenanet's bright idea or NCSoft's) that something more flashy would have been used. In essence this is promoting both Aion and Guild Wars but it looks like a completely rushed job. Considering the other emotes in the game the character is animated, this one is not. The wings are 2d planes, no effort was put in with any kind of special animation, particle effects or other effects. It just looks like the cheapest, easiest thing someone at one of the companies could come up with over their lunch break. This is supposed to encourage people to buy what now? ~~000.00.00.00~~ 23:03, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

The cross-promotion is targeted at people who are planning to or seriously thinking about purchasing Aion and who may already have Guild Wars accounts, as well as existing Guild Wars players who are planning to or seriously thinking about purchasing Aion. It's just a little bonus item. In other words, it's not something we expect will be the single motivating force for a person to purchase Aion or Guild Wars, but it's just a nice, purely cosmetic bonus for those who are already intending to get it. Cross-promotion isn't new for companies that have multiple products. For example, NCsoft games will often include trial codes for other games with the retail boxes, and Blizzard is known to do cross-promotion among their games, too (e.g. minipets for other Blizzard games in WoW). We're aware that not everyone is going to be interested in this wing emote. --Regina Buenaobra User Regina Buenaobra sig.png 23:37, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, but they don't go together. I don't want to look at these in every outpost :/ (the wings fit in in the atmosphere of Aion) -> personal opinion: to me, this feels a bit like those venders swarming tourist busses with their merchandise. If I was interested I would buy it because I liked it in the first place, this "promotion" has an opposite effect on me --Ellisia talk 23:48, 25 August 2009 (UTC)
Late edit: the fantasy wings, big weapons, flashy animations, are the reason I won't buy aion, I like the more real atmosphere in guildwars (also not a fan of the wow cartoonish look), if guildwars had these things I wouln't have bought it, just my opinion --Ellisia talk 23:54, 25 August 2009 (UTC)

¿ New content update ?

Earlier in the year we were told we would get a large update every three to four months. I am just curious if there is any big content update soon or if GW2 Info and the XTH have slowed the process down? If Anet's main focus is the XTH at the moment, that sounds good to me, would just like an update on whats going on. Also I apologize if there have been statements about this already. -- Natalie Black User NatalieBlack sig.jpg 01:40, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Unfortunately their has has been several posts dealing directly with this issue and the official word has been "no comment" each time. However in accordance with the stated time scale Anet gave us at the start of the year (large content updates every 3-4 months), anet have another 11 days to release a big content update before the update can be considered late. Have to admit, that I, like many others, am becoming frustrated with the "No comment" stance on this one. As this issue is leading to confusion within the GW community. When I've logged onto GW recently I have came across several arguments in all chat between people who believed their was an update this month and those who did not due to the lack of info. I would like to note, I'm not frustrated by the possibility of the update being late. From working in the gaming industry now, I can understand how deadlines need to be somewhat flexible in nature due to the amount of unforeseen variables in a project and the amount of good will from employees that goes into making a truly enjoyable product, however the lack of a simple "Hey guys, really sorry, but we've been slammed with work and haven't completed the update yet" or "hey guys update's coming, YAY!", is incredibly frustrating. /endrant -- Salome User salome sig2.png 02:02, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

I seriously doubt you have ever experienced real silence in your entire life. Even your heart produces vibrations. Even a deaf person can feel vibrations with the skin. Whatever you may call silence, it is not real silence. Maybe just less noise, but never silence. Real silence would drive you mad, it is in your genes, unless you are not human, of course. Maybe if we say "No, we don't want to know about your content update, we're looking at other stuff" it might work in reversing elements of the universe that are currently stopping Arenanet from letting information out about what they said they would let information out about. (Reset indent) We are nearing the conclusion of August we know next to nothing about the next update. I'm not in the gaming industry, I'm a lowly modder, but seriously, come on, after all this time you've got nothing to give to us in way of information? I, even with my limited experience, now that's a load of charr poop, and the sad thing is that most people who are tracking this sort of information release know as well. I'm half expecting your to change your "we'll talk to you about the process" line to "when it's ready". ~~000.00.00.00~~ 20:08, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

The lesson to Arena Net is: do not give that much information to the players. If they had only said, "we will do a big update in four months" and then released the Menagerie, it would have been better than saying "we will do a big update every four months". Unfortunately, the GW community is not ready to receive that kind of information. Erasculio 20:15, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
I'd say it's more along the lines of Arenanet just has a problem with saying stuff they can't do. The issue with that is that what they say to us is actually planned out (it's the stuff they've actually had meeting about and made decisions on), and when they can't follow through with their planned actions, and then not update them to take new situations (etc) into account its just bad no matter which way you look at it. Arenanet is judged by their word and their actions: their word says one thing, and their action says another... that's never a good thing in this case. Arenanet has already proven it can't follow its own word, and when you put yourself in a position where your word means nothing... what does that leave you with? ~~000.00.00.00~~ 21:08, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
Which happens to be exactly the reason why they do not tell us stuff more often. Saying "we're working on X" only to later have to say "sorry, X didn't work, we're trashing that idea" would only lead to players claiming that Arena Net "can't follow its own word". It is wiser to not say anything at all, so players are not going to demand things (multiple times and quite often, too). Silence is literally golden here. Erasculio 21:16, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

I haven't been cleared to discuss the timing of the next content update in public. Everything that I comment on or discuss with fans are things that I'm actually able to talk about. If I have no information that I can talk about or no new information to post beyond what I've already posted about, all I can really say is keep an eye on the web site or the wiki for when we do post information.
You'll have more information about the Live Team's current and future plans fairly soon. There's going to be a few changes in how those plans get communicated, using what tools, and at what stage. One of the issues we've been grappling with is with many players' lack of knowledge or understanding of the development process, and just how many changes a feature can undergo before it goes live. Game development is usually a black box between the time a project is announced to when you start seeing the first glimpses of it, which is why there have been so many misplaced comments about Guild Was 2 being "vaporware" (when MMORPGs take between 3 - 7 years to create from scratch). There isn't much visibility into actual game development in the industry, and I mean the nitty gritty process, the iterations, the discussions, the constant change, and flux that goes on before a product is launched, at least there isn't unless you read industry post-mortems or attend industry conferences. One concern on our side is, if we let you see that world, that this won't come with the understanding that game development is a continuous, iterative process. That game developers are human. That game developers experiment and innovate, but experimentation and pushing boundaries can be messy. It can mean going back to the drawing board multiple times to get it right, and it can mean canceling features because there are flaws.
The XTH is kind of a tricky one. We believe we've found the source of the issue, and we've taken steps to address it, but it requires extensive testing. The results of those tests will determine the fate of XTH. But Linsey will address this in much more detail soon. --Regina Buenaobra User Regina Buenaobra sig.png 00:57, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
Your making it sound like the XTH isnt coming back, and your currently thinking up excuses as to why. With hindsight, wouldnt it have been better if the XTH was rolled back to previous working version if the fix required for the new one was going to take months? --77.97.23.248 01:13, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
Oh, yay...it's excuse time. In my experience (working with teens), excuses typically mean something didn't get done. Look, most GW players would probably not claim to have experience in game development and most of us would probably be humble enough to accept that there's a lot we don't know. However, regardless of the job, excuses typically don't fly....especially when you've had 4 months in a pretty static game (comparatively) to get this done. It's disheartening to say the very least. --Karate User Karate Jesus KJ for sig.png Jesus 02:03, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
In less serious and less meaningful jobs, people are fired for not trying to achieve inhuman things. These explanations sound by far too excuse-ish to be trusted. <_< Ɲoɕʈɋɽɕɧ 02:33, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
I am highly critical of Arenanet, as pretty much anyone can see from my time here, it's more out of frustration of the situation: I see such promise yet see it constantly marred by this kind of thing.
"One concern on our side is, if we let you see that world, that this won't come with the understanding that game development is a continuous, iterative process." You do realise the best way of developing understanding is through education, right? That kind of comment really feels like a slap in the face when you have comments like this: We want players to feel connected to what we are developing even though it may be months away from release, so during development we will be more open about our process and what we are working on. <---- That right there could have helped in providing understanding, allow people who don't know this nitty gritty process to actually see it would what it is, even if it was only a glimpse.
As a modder I have to say this: I don't think it's that we don't understand, it's more than you don't understand. We understand games take years to make, we also understand it takes a lot to maintain a game, balance a skill, but we also understand when people are doing something wrong. Maybe it's not 'wrong', per se, more "it could have been done in a better way, like this whole Janurary update.
Rambling over, thank you for your time. ~~000.00.00.00~~ 07:25, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
"We understand games take years to make": not really, see all the talk about how GW2 would be vaporware. People don't understand that game development takes a long time (as the wait for GW2 has proved) and people don't understand that game development means a feature that was going to be implemented may have to be cancelled (see all the talk about the big update each four months). In the context of the Guild Wars community, giving players more information would lead only to more complains (again, as we have right now; if Arena Net had not told players about their plans for a big update every four months, this section and the many others about the same topic would not exist). Erasculio 10:06, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

[reset indent] I disagree, Erasculio. This exact topic would not exist but players would be wondering what the Live Team is doing, is Guild Wars dying now because ANet is ignoring it, etc. My problem is that ANet, and the industry, rarely attempts transparency. Players are then led to feel that by devs/CMs/PR quoting truisms "development takes a long time," "development is iterative," or what not lead to understanding by the players?! The cardinal rule of good writing is "show, don't tell." Recently Orion at Turbine did a series of blog posts on his revamping of an old dungeon instance. It really helped the readers perceive what the dev did all day, and why revamping an already made dungeon took two weeks of dev time (if not more). The other problem, and I hate to say it, is Linsey. She graciously, on her own free time, gives brief glimpses of the development process, but because this is her own free time, these glimpses are sporatic and rare. So the issue becomes... she is doing it, why can't ANet officially do it with using CM's and PR - people who are paid to know how to utilize community/public nodes? People quote Linsey's development wikiposts 'all the time' when other people start complaining about impossibilities. Okay, I'm done. --Ravious 11:50, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

I think people should just chill for a bit, the whole team was definitely invested on the 1st GW2 reveal, so I think we should just wait and see. It sounds like there might be some good (big) news coming soon, yes this gets tiring, but look at GW2, it was worth the wait imo. Let's give them some space, let them work out whatever they have to get prepper for public, and see what happens instead of jumping down their throat for the 5000000000000000000000x time. DarkNecrid 15:44, 26 August 2009 (UTC)
Yes, Guild Wars 2 looks very pretty, I'm sure if it was a person it would get hit on a lot (I for one am looking forward to seeing more of Prophecies 2.0 ... eh, I mean Guild Wars 2). But, we're not talking about Guild Wars 2 here. ~~000.00.00.00~~ 03:06, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
You aren't, but once again the whole team was invested on GW2 reveal...you know, the team called ArenaNet. To assume that the Live Team did nothing at all related to that reveal would be very silly IMHO, and I'm positive part of the reason not much has come to fruition on this side for awhile now is because of that. DarkNecrid 06:27, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
You know this for fact? ~~000.00.00.00~~ 20:01, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
Also it doesn't really explain why no one has just said "sorry update will be delayed due to GW2 reveal". As it stands anet have 3.5 days to release a big content update or it's late, in accordance with their stated time scale. I would have expected some info as part of their new "more open" communication plan before this point. Personally, as many people know here, I have ALOT of time for anet and its staff members, as I think they work incredibly hard and provide a quality game, however I am somewhat disappointed by their lack of communication on this issue and I hope we hear something before the weekend. -- Salome User salome sig2.png 20:08, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

Well, I'm assuming that since Linsey said this update was going to be PvP-related, and then there was a mention of removing heroes from certain areas of PvP that we may get to see some kind of an update for this month... oooooor, since this henchmen replacing heroes competition is running until Thursday, September 10, 2009, tack on a few weeks for testing, one can also guess that the update may not come out until the end of September, early October. ~~000.00.00.00~~ 00:50, 28 August 2009 (UTC)

GW2 trailer and login announcement in "GW1"

Hello Regina and first of all, many thanks from a casual player to Anet for providing a trailer for GW2 ! It means a lot for every single player who were waiting for any good omen and news about GW2 :) Not sure if it's either a suggestion or not, maybe also a bad idea, but... some players aren't checking much forums/fansites etc... Do you think it's worth putting a note about GW2 trailer in the ingame login announcement in "GW1" ? Thanks for reading. :) Davor Belegnaur 19:35, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Logically, the post above could be construed as a forbidden "s-word" request, but any rational person would expect Arena Net is fairly likely to post a note for active players where they can see it. Mar Talk Master 22:39, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

Another subject of concern

The only thing that matters for me in the trailer of gw2 is that they say that diversity will be needed to overcome challenges. I dont care for good graphics if we end up seeing the same profession and build everywhere, even in high def with tons of shaders. Yseron - 81.251.17.138 20:12, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

How is this a question? ...Also you apparently missed the part of the faq that said they won't release gameplay details until later on so most assumptions are off for now. (except for Solo builds obviously... since they did make it a point that everyone will be able to complete the core parts of the game "alone"). If you have a bitch with everyone using the same builds, then you should probably take it up with GOD for making half of the world's "civilized" population less original than dog turds --ilrUser ilr deprav.png 22:26, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

"One profession/build everywhere" wont happen until "Pve Meta" is formed and solidified that could take years with a new game, especially if skills system is all different and the game is more gear oriented then before and it might just take skill to execute "builds". How ever, when it comes to Problems, like what profession and race is best suited for a certain type of job there will always be just one or few correct answers and a lot of wrong ones. Let us speculate for a moment, suppose Norns get Armor and health bonus while in Bear form while still being able to use their weapons possibly skills etc, then there will be quite a few tanks who arn't Norns just becouse you are at a disadvantage if you do not use bear form even if you are at same skill level, build and gear. When they said Diversity is needed to overcome challenges it was to set the stage for story line where you will first start isolated in an area filled with your Race alone, after you learn how to play the game you will get a series of instanced missions where you will be fighting against against something you can not kill, then you will retreat, regroup with other races, possibly do missions for them as well, convincing them that the threat you fought earlier is so grave you will need all 5 races to help you and then after few days of missions there will be endgame where you slay the Boss and his army of slightly overpowered but very manageable foes together with npcs and/or players from races other then your own... and as this is just a speculation this can't be a spoiler =P Biz 07:12, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
I hope it means that you'll need characters of the 5 races, along with a character of each race being able to change between proffesions. MithUser MithranArkanere Star.pngTalk 01:53, 24 August 2009 (UTC)
Yseron: Your concern is noted. The GW2 designers are working on giving players a lot of options. I can't really say much more than that, but they do have this in mind. --Regina Buenaobra User Regina Buenaobra sig.png 20:53, 31 August 2009 (UTC)
