Ok so this is my first suggestion, and i got the idea about it just after viewing the Sylvari week posts on the blog. I know that the game is already in the finishing process (I hope at least) so this suggestion is probably for an expansion. I noticed that the sylvari are very customizable and you can add plant parts to almost any area on the body, which can be useful in designing this race. Now i really haven't come up with the name for the race, so i will just refer to it as the race. I realize that i am not the first to come up with such an idea and i won't in any way make it seem like i want anything to gain from this idea. This suggestion is my way of showing appreciation for the developers of one game that i really enjoyed playing and hopefully not the only one. I also noticed that it is mentioned that the bloodstones will play a part in the future of Tyria, so this race kinda fits in, again i hope :D.
To start with, an introduction to the lore behind the creation of the race. The bloodstones contain essences of the four primary schools of magic ( aggression, destruction, preservation and denial) and they were created by the, at that time, Five Gods (this part is in the wiki). The potential for magic that is locked within the bloodstones is what draws many scholars and historians, and power-hungry mages to them. There are settlements errected at the base of each bloodstone, but humans and asura aren't the only ones that feel the magic hidden inside the bloodstones, many monsters (Ettins, for example) often attack those settlements in search of the magical power. The awakening of the bloodstones is an important part, and no one knows how it happened. Some say that it was the Gods that, in response of the threat the Elder Dragons posess, reawakened the magic power hidden behind the bloodstone, and yet others think it was one of the residents of a nearby settlement, perhaps a mad asura scholar thirsty for power, in a vain attempt to harness all the power for himself, magically unlocked them. How the awakening happened, no one is really sure, but the how and why are far less important than what happened after their awakening.
The bloodstones power erupted, and any animals and sentient beings in the radius of these eruptions were transformed. This transformation is actually a fusion with the naturally occuring elements found in the world of Tyria, and for every being the fusion happened in different parts of the body. Now the races that were in the vicinity of the eruption were mostly humans, and asura (not many of the other races knew of their existence, and their locations and potential were kept secret by the humans from the charr, because of the conflict, and from the sylvari, because they were new to the world and other races were not sure about their intentions on it. Norn rarely care about historic things, or ones with "potential",they mostly care about things that can kill their enemies). The change wasn't always accepted by the body, and this is what happened to the most of the asura, who do to their small bodies could not handle the power and were simply blown out by it, the animals and monsters have lost their minds, and became ravaging beasts that now roam the world, unacknowleged by their former packs.
The change in humans was the most notable. Their sanity was left untouched, but their anatomy was altered in many ways. But, unlike the others, where the change happened simply by fusion, here it happened differently, and it is unclear why. Many here argue that the minds of humans were able to repel the fusion, but that the eruption caused the aspects of their personality to come out on their bodies, altering them in a way that some gained almost complete transformation to an elemental being, while some remained almost unchanged. Due to their new affinity, or rather an affinity that was always there, just now it was unlocked, and the individual could command the element much more freely than any elementalist (there was almost always one dominant element that came out to the surface, and it wasn't necesarily always on the visible part of a body). They often expirienced bursts of elemental power that was now unlocked, and this is why other humans and races feared this new change. These bursts were powered by emotions, and could be very unstable, and very dangerous, making the individuals very feared, by even their own human race. This is why they decided to separate from their old race, some because they rather live in separation than hurt innocents, others yet saw this as a good thing, and saw to use the new found power for destruction of the society that sees them as a disease.
Now for the more fun part, the race is meant to be a human - elemental mix, and the custiomization is a very important part of it. You can choose to alter your human appearance in any way you want, ranging from flames or waves for hair, to rocky hands and lightning that moves through them. Affinity to a certain element can be chosen in the same way as choosing a God to be blessed by in the human biography. Some can choose to make their skin change to rock or fire, or magma, or make a mix between rock, fire, water or they can choose to retain the skin and add some lightning that flows from the arm to the fingertips. The customization and the choices are the highlight of this race, ranging from human to elemental (but i really don't see many peaople who want to retain their feeble human apperance since, well you can choose that race already :) ). I realize this is not entirely a new race by all standards but just a variation of an existing one, but even sylvari retan human apperance even after all the effort to de-humanize them.
And to add, what makes this race different from the elementalist? Well the elementalist uses his mind to cast spells that mostly change the environment around them, while their body remains human (this is true for all spells except the forms - Mist Form for example, that one contradicts this theory), and this race will have racial skills that will change their body during bursts. Durnig character customization you are asked to indentify your personality between 5 choices ( 4 will be tied to the four temperaments - Sanguine (Air) , Phlegmatic (Water) , Choleric (Fire) and Melancholic (Earth); and the fifth will be an omnipotent, that is tied to all elements at the same time). If you have an element that you have an affinity to, you are given a skill that unleashes that particular element's burst. During the burst, the skin of your character completely transforms to that of the element. For example, An individual with affinity to fire may use it's burst to create a blazing nova that either damages or burns foes in vicinity, while one drawn to earth can turn it's flesh to stone in an instant, deflecting most physical damage. As you can see, these skills are either PBAoE or changes on the body of the individual, they can't summon rocks from the sky, or shift the earth's movement. That is reserved for the elementalist. And for the ones that find themselves with an affinity to all the elements may be able to summon an elemental shield that protects against all elemental damage, but is weak to physical (it consists of fire, water, air and sand so that arrows, bullets and weapons pass freely through it's surface). These racial skills are meant to be much weaker than skills of professions, like other racial skills.
Well i sincerely hope i haven't bored you to death, and i know that it's not a perfect race, nor entirely original one, but the customization makes it very interesting and every player can be original when choosing this race to play with ;)
