This suggestion is actually fairly simple, add an -offline command line parameter to the game, which when used, will default all logins to "offline" status. This will then prevent you from appearing as online when you change characters, as normally when you change characters you are switched to "online" even if you didn't want to be for whatever reason.

This could also be expanded with a switch like -mode (Away|DND|Offline) to set your 'normal' mode automatically upon login.
